The STAR Program welcomes you to riding in the great state of Idaho! This beautiful state is most likely the best place you've never ridden. We may be famous for our potatoes, but we're even more famous (among motorcyclists) for the incredible roads and scenery found throughout this beautiful state. There are more than 50,000 miles of roads weaving throughout Idaho's picturesque landscape, just waiting to be discovered. It truly is a motorcyclist's paradise. This book will introduce you to a few rides that will showcase the diversity of the state and its terrain. The fun and beauty that these roads provide truly prove how valuable training courses are in helping all motorcyclists fully enjoy the thrill and excitement that comes with being one with their bike. As the saying goes, the more you know, the better it gets! A very special thanks to Tricia Eberharter for all her hard work and dedication in volunteering to design this book and put it together for your riding pleasure. Ride Safe and… ENJOY! Ron Shepard STAR Program Director P.S. If you would like to freshen up your riding skills, visit our website at www.idahostar.org, or give us a call at 1-888-280-STAR (7827). “...no matter where you are in Idaho, you don’t have to travel far to escape” Julie Fanselow, Idaho-Off the Beaten Path
Boise Rides!
Boise Rides! Boise Rides! was inspired by Ron Shepard, Director of the Idaho STAR Program, who thought a small guide highlighting some of the great local rides from Boise would make your riding journeys here an enjoyable adventure. The rides highlighted here will give you the opportunity to venture out onto the roads of Idaho, Oregon, and Montana and see why we all love living here! Some of the rides compiled here take only an hour and some of them could go on forever. Boise Rides! will introduce to you this great state of Idaho and the wonderful people who live here. And when you return home and hear about those Idaho Spuds, we hope you will have fond memories to think back upon. Enjoy your stay and please ride safe! Many riders contributed to this work and we would like to thank them here. You know who you are and we thank you for sharing your riding journeys with us. We would also like to thank Jeff Naylor and Grand Targhee Resort for the cover photograph. Jerome & Tricia Eberharter

Bogus Basin Bogus Basin you ask? Named after a nasty incident when some out of town boys tried to pass on fools' gold back in the 1880's. Only an hour for a ride? 16 Miles from downtown Boise to the base of Bogus Basin Ski Resort. Head down State Street to 17th Street, take 17th north, where the road splits, turn north on to Harrison Boulevard. As Harrison Boulevard. crosses Hill Road (stop light), the road turns into Bogus Basin Road. 16 miles of endless curves, we counted them one day and came up with approximately 142 loving curves to enjoy. You'll arrive exhilarated and refreshed, as it's 10-15 degrees cooler at the 6,000 ft mark. A great local coffee house, Moxie Java, is located in the 17th Street Albertsons Market Place. For eats, 13th Street in the north end is a great spot to watch the local attractions. • Lucky 13 - the local hangout: pizza, sandwiches and the mountain bikers hangout for the summer. • Goodies - the place to be for a chocolate fix or ice cream sundae. • Richard’s - pastries and caffeine for the road. • Gas stations throughout town and at the intersection of Hill Road and Bogus Basin Road. A

Craters of the Moon and Sun Valley
Craters of the Moon and Sun Valley The Craters of the Moon ride is a destination journey, so we incorporated the Sun Valley Loop into the map section. Craters of the Moon is located southwest of Arco, Idaho, in the Picabo Volcanic Field occupying 715,000 acres of federal land. The Craters were declared a national monument by President Coolidge in 1924. Since then the monument has been expanded through five presidential proclamations. The most recent and largest expansion occurred when President Clinton signed a proclamation enlarging it 13 fold. “The strangest 75 square miles on the North American continent.” “An outdoor museum of volcanism.” “A weird lunar landscape.” These are just a few of the things said about the Craters of the Moon. The central focus is the Great Rift, a 62-mile long crack in the earth's crust. The Great Rift has some wonderful features; craters, lava tubes, deep cracks, and vast lava fields that form a strangely beautiful volcanic sea on central Idaho's Snake River Plain. The first volcanic eruptions occurred at Craters of the Moon about 15,000 years ago. The most recent ended about 2,100 years ago. A Shoshone Indian legend speaks of a serpent on a mountain who, angered by lightening, coiled around and squeezed the mountain until liquid rock flowed, fire shot from cracks and the mountain exploded. 180 Miles - From Boise to the “weird lunar landscape.” See the Sun Valley Loop for info on the loop. Craters of the Moon - Take I-84 to Mountain Home/Fairfield Exit. Jordan Valley & Danner, OR When the explorers Lewis and Clark asked the Shoshone woman Sacajawea and her husband, French trapper Toussaint Charbonneau, to act as interpreters for their expedition, the couple brought along their two-month-old son, Jean Baptiste. Over the course of the two-year journey, baby Baptiste won the hearts of the rough men of the corps. Captain Clark called him "my little dancing boy." Jean Baptiste Charbonneau is buried in Danner, Oregon. The ride to his burial site takes you through Jordan Valley and the high plains of southeastern Oregon. Joseph, Oregon Chief Joseph, Nez Perce Indian Chief, was born in 1840 in the Wallowa Valley, what is now Northeast Oregon. His given name Hin-mah-too-Yah-Lat-Kekt translates to “thunder rolling down the mountain.” In 1877, Joseph and his band of Nez Perce were ordered to leave the Wallowa valley for a reservation in Idaho. This began the famous flight to Canada, ending with Joseph's bitter capture just forty miles from Canada. His surrender speech has become the most famous statement in American Indian History. Chief Joseph is best known for his resistance to the US government's attempts to force his tribe on to reservations. 225 Miles of curvy riding and spectacular scenery to Joseph, Oregon. Lolo Pass Lolo is located in Missoula County, Montana, 11 miles south of Missoula along Highway 93 near Cleveland Mountain. An important junction in Western history, Lolo is a gateway to the Bitterroot Valley. Visit the Lolo Pass visitors Information Center on US 12 near the Idaho/Montana border to learn more about the historic Lolo Trail, used by the Nez Perce Indians as a buffalo trail and by the Lewis and Clark Expedition en route to the Pacific. The buildings at The Lolo Visitor Center are part of the Old Mud Creek Ranger Station, built near Lolo Hot Springs in 1923. They were moved to Lolo Pass & restored in 1977. Missoula, Montana began as a tenuous settlement known as Hell’s Gate. In 1860, CP Higgins & Francis Worden saw trade possibilities and opened a log store in the valley. The search for gold and the completion of Mullan Road in 1863 opened travel from Montana to Walla Walla, Washington. This brought people to the Missoula Valley which became known as Missoula, taken from the Salish Indian word "near the cold chilling waters." Approximately 763 Mile Loop Take State Street west to Hwy 55, north to Grangeville, Follow 13 through Kooskia to 12 which will take you over Lolo Pass to Missoula. To return to Boise, take 93 south through Salmon and Challis, at the intersection of 75/21 take 75 to Stanley then 21 north to Banner Summit, then down to Lowman and into Idaho City, Hwy 21 will take you into Boise via Warm Springs Road which intersects with Broadway which puts you back in downtown Boise! • Full services in Boise, McCall, New Meadows, Banks, Kooskia, Missoula, Stanley, Lowman and Idaho City A

RIDE INFO • I-84 East to Mtn Home (1st Exit and follow signs to Hammett • Take a right a few miles past Hammett (avoid getting back on I-84) • After Glenns Ferry, cross over the Interstate to King Hill then around the great right sweeper and before you get back to I-84 you can take an unmarked left to see the most unspoiled part of old highway 30 • This will cross over I-84 again at Bliss where you will turn right toward Hagerman Boise
Thousand Springs
Thousand Springs Thousand Springs is an abundance of natural springs. The Snake River Plains Aquifer is the source for the water and is one of the largest ground water systems in the world. Also worth seeing is Shoshone Falls, at 212 feet, the falls are 52 feet higher than Niagara Falls. 200 Miles Round Trip - A ride that can't be beat with sights to see and a great dinner stop. Use Old Highway 30 rather than the freeway, and you will see how we once traveled on narrow, windy two-lane roads which have little or no traffic on them. Hmmm, sounds a little bit like motorcycle heaven to me. Take I-84 as far as Mountain Home, take the first exit and follow signs for Hammett. A couple miles past Hammett you need to take a right to avoid getting back on I-84, (you're heading for Glenns Ferry now) after Glenns Ferry cross over the Interstate & head to King Hill, then around the great right sweeper and before you get back to I-84 you must take an unmarked left to see the most unspoiled part of the old Hwy 30. This winds through ranch land and crosses I-84 again at Bliss where you'll turn right toward Hagerman. At the end of the town (Hagerman) on your right is a wild game restaurant called Snake River Grill. After dinner, head on down the road to view Thousand Springs in the bluffs overlooking the Snake River. • Full Services available in Bliss, Hagerman, Buhl and Twin Falls A

Vale, Cambridge Loop
Vale, Cambridge Loop Vale, Oregon is well known as the pheasant hunting capital of Oregon. It is also a community situated on the Old Oregon Trail. Vale’s culture and progress of early settlers are depicted on murals throughout the town. It's an outside gallery reflecting Vale Heritage in over 23 murals. Baker City, Oregon was once considered to be the premier social center along the Oregon Trail. In Halfway, there is the true blue working bison ranch which gives a variety of tours, Hells Canyon Bison Ranch. Cambridge, Idaho, the gateway to Hells Canyon, 100 miles north of Boise, is the home of the oldest published newspaper in the state of Idaho. Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North America, approximately 5500 feet in depth and 40 miles in length. 340 Miles - The Loop - A fun loop whichever way you ride it. I-84 West, 20/26 to Vale. From Hwy 26 to Unity, some open expanses, long sweeping curves and a lack of folks living out here. From Unity, taking 245 east, the stretch gently winds along the Burnt River bottom. When 245 turns north to head up over Bald and Dooley Mountains, lots of real nice corners encourage you to check out the amount of ground clearance on your bike. Then you hit Hwy 7 and proceed through Baker City. Take Hwy 86 east out of Baker City past the Oregon Trail Museum (definitely worth a visit). Route 86 then winds over to Halfway. At Oxbow Dam, take 71 south to 95 which will put you back on I-84. • Services in Boise, Vale, Unity, Baker City and Cambridge A
