From the Editor’s Desk
I
f you’re like me, you love a good buffet. Whether you’re in the mood for variety or just in the mood for a lot to eat, buffets offer a number of reasons to choose them for lunch or dinner. Convenience is certainly one of those reasons. When you’re hungry and don’t want to have to wait for a table or for service, you can find a quick seat at a buffet and make a dash for the food. In mere minutes you can be chowing down on your favorite entrees. Locally, we have several good buffets to choose from: This week’s cover story W Spoon Buffet in Victorville, as well as Wood Grill in Hesperia and Shakey’s Pizza Parlor in Victorville. That right, it’s easy to forget that Shakey’s has one of the best lunch buffets around. Not only do they stock the buffet with as many as eight different kinds of pizza, the selection also features chicken, potatoes and salad with all the ingredients to make a healthy lunch. W Spoon is a newcomer to the area, but its tantalizing offerings have made it a favorite of many High Desert residents already. Wood Grill has been a staple in Hesperia for years and has become a go-to choice for diners seeking ribs or steak, as well as a variety of other items. For me, vegetables always are one of the things I most enjoy on a buffet. You’ll find quite a selection at both Wood Grill and W Spoon, as well as Shakey’s. For my money, nothing beats a no-muss, no-fuss, all-you-can-eat trip to one of these fine establishments. I hope you’ll try them out too and add them to your list of go-to restaurants in the region. — Steve Hunt

Dieting and dining out can go hand in hand, if you follow these tips
D
ining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States. Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restau-
rants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course. Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that wonÕt compromise
their commitments to eating healthy. Order an appetizer instead of an entree. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure
t h e i r c u s t o m e rs ge t enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entree portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant
to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entree offerings. Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie
fare such as fruit. Dine out infrequently. Dieters can indulge i n favo r i t e fo o d s o r less healthy fare every now and then without feeling guilty. In fact, many dieting experts suggest the occasional indulgence as a motivator or reward for hard work. Diners who dine out infrequently can use their special nights out as their opportunities to indulge. Avoid overindulging, which can be both unhealthy and uncomfortable. Dining out is incredibly popular, and diets don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

F
ood trends come and go. But one such trend that has seemingly enjoyed more staying power than other flavors of the month is avocado toast, a popular dish that might trace some of that admiration to how easy it is to prepare. The popularity of avocado toast has exploded in recent years, but it has actually been around for decades. Many trace the origins of avocado toast to Australia, though it’s hard for food historians to say with utmost certainty where the dish was first served. Avocado toast might be as healthy as it is popular. Avocados boast a
host of health benefits, some of which might surprise even the most ardent devotee of avocado toast. • Av o c a d o s a r e loaded with vitamins. According to the U. S. D e p a r t m e n t o f Agriculture’s National Nutrient Database, avo-
cados are a great source of numerous vitamins, including C, E, K, and B-6. Avocados also contain beta- carotene, which the human body converts into vitamin A that promotes healthy skin and a strong immune system. • Avocados can ben-
efit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies pub lished in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration
Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States. • Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis. • Av o c a d o s m a y help fight depression.
Av o c a d o s a r e l o a d ed with omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit the body in myriad ways. One of those ways is by helping to reduce the symptoms of depression. Polyunsaturated fats such as omega-3 fatty acids are thought to antagonize inflammatory cytokines that can contribute to feelings of depression. Trendy foods come and go, oftentimes falling off the radar when their health benefits are overstated or proven dubious. However, the documented benefits of avocados may ensure the staying power of avocado toast.

Dozens of dishes deliver decadent dining experience W Spoon Buffet showcases options not found elsewhere in Victor Valley

ICTORVILLE — Visiting a buffet gives even the hungriest of eaters the opportunity to fill up on a unique combination of different food genres. And when the restaurant itself is a unique choice in the buffet genre, the options grow exponentially. The choices at W Spoon Buffet unquestionably encourage eaters to step outside of the box a bit and expand their palates — or satiate an appetite for something different. After all, where else in the Victor Valley can one find frogs legs? The charm here is expansive, starting with the numerous seafood dishes one can choose from at any given meal. Some of it is more traditional fare, like the crab salad and fried shrimp, offer familiar tastes but help serve as a starting off point to discover more decadent flavor profiles. That type of decadence is found in the coconut pineapple shrimp, an easy favorite among regular diners here, says Winnie, the restaurant’s manager. “People love it,” she tells Dining Out. Another favorite is their rotating fresh-made sushi rolls. “We have a chef dedicated to just making those,” Winnie says, pointing out that many
buffets offering sushi simply unpack premade rolls from a vendor and set them out for consumption. Some of the sushi at W Spoon strays even further from typical, such as the saury sushi, which Winnie says is similar in taste and texture to eel, and nigiri choices with octopus and clam meat. There are also allyou-can-eat snow crab legs with drawn butter for dipping during dinner hours and a delectable “baked seafood” dish featuring imitation crab meat that’s served in scoop-size portions on a half-shell. Dishes like these make it easy to fit several sample sizes of numerous offerings at a time on a plate. Charm and delicacy don’t end with the seafood, though. The biggest reason to visit W Spoon, Winnie says, is its Hibachi grill. An assortment of options prepared fresh in front of you is not only a fun way to dine, it’s a delicious one. Winnie says they use cuts of New York strip in their meat selection, which is rounded out with chicken and, for surf lovers, shrimp and imitation crab. With that comes a proper complement of veggies, including freshsliced jalapenos for those who want to add a kick to their plate. throughout the buffet give hearty turf balance to the already filling surf selection. Try the green pepper beef, similar to beef and broccoli at a Chinese restaurant with the broccoli subbed out for sliced
green bell peppers and onions to raise the flavor profile. The dish is incredibly savory with a subtle sweet finish that helps highlight the true taste of the beef. Of course, you can start your meal properly
with a salad made from fresh ingredients at their salad bar, and bookend the whole experience with desserts that, like their main-dish counterparts, seem to be of a different color from a “regular buffet.
The dessert bar here offers creme puffs, vanilla roll, baked macaroons and, standing out brightly, a mango mousse. This mousse is easy to spot with its orange top and explains its own name easily with high tropical
notes from the mango infusion. Buffets are an opportunity for the whole family to put together individual dinners in a united setting. W Spoon Buffet takes the idea of individual compilation to a new
level and makes for a unique dining experience unlike any other in the Victor Valley. Visit W Spoon at 14689 Valley Center Drive in Victorville or call them at 760-241-0900 for more information.

entry that first year, each “mixologist” was absolutely certain his drink was superior, but Los Domingos and its two locations could only enter one margarita. What to do? The answer was obvious: Ask their customers. Margarita aficionados from both locations were asked to join the bartenders in the limelight — no
pun intended — to choose which specialty margarita would be entered. Good idea? You bet. However, there was still no clear winner. The Los Domingos bartenders went back to the drawing board and combined their ideas. The results were outstanding. For three years straight, Los Domingos margaritas were voted The
Best. In 2009 the winner was the Italian Pomegranate Margarita with Amaretto instead of Triple Sec. Served on ice, the drink had a slice of orange — in keeping with the sweetness of the overall drink — and a wedge of lime. In 2010, Los Domingos won again with the Desert Pear Margarita, served
blended and with a wedge of lime. In 2011, the Huckleberry Margarita took top honors, despite huckleberries being a new taste for many margarita lovers in the High Desert. Lorenzo keeps current on drink trends by following the “food-and-drink” news from Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York
City — cities he calls the “Capitals of the Restaurant Industry.” Los Domingos serves half-priced margaritas from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Wednesday. Los Domingos Apple Valley is located at 17790 Wika Road. The telephone number is 760-946-5344. Visit www.losdomingosapplevalley.com.

orenzo Ortiz has been tending bar at Los Domingos since 2001, having started work there with Claude Attala, now the manager of the Apple Valley restaurant, and his brother Max. Lorenzo started as a host and server, and when Max began tending bar, he urged Lorenzo to join him. Lorenzo learned “on the job” and his expertise has served him well. He was involved in the creation of Los Domingos’ historic — and award-winning — margaritas when food-and-drink competitions were held in the High Desert almost 10 years ago. The original “contest concept” involved eight to 12 area restaurants competing to be named purveyors of best food and drink. Judges were hungry and thirsty diners who bought tickets to attend and support the contest. Proceeds from the competitions were earmarked to benefit the Boys & Girls Club. A standard margarita consists of tequila, triple sec and lime or lemon juice, served with salt or sugar on the rim of the glass. The drink is shaken with ice, blended with ice, or served without ice at all. This basic recipe is perfect for tweaking, and today there are as many margarita varieties as there are shapes of margarita glasses. The original ideas for Los Domingos’ winning margaritas actually came about through a contest of their own. When Apple Valley and Barstow Los Domingos bartenders presented their individual

Shakey’s Pizza Parlor in Victorville — a tradition ahead of the time By Kathy Young Dining Out

ne thing we have learned after years of writing about food is, tastes change, no pun intended. Our tastes for flavors or “profiles” change when a new food item appears on the horizon or we watch some foodie show touting a new way of fixing “the usual fare.” Take sweet potatoes. A perennial staple of fall holiday tables, sweet potatoes have found a new audience of those who enjoy chips or fries. That brings us to Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, the first pizza franchise in the country. Shakey’s is just as popular today as any “pizza-come-lately.” Those who love their cheese pizza or “standby favorite” pepperoni can enter Shakey’s Pizza Parlor and order up their favorite in any size. But if you prefer adventure — you’re a vegetarian who loves veggies smothered in one or more kinds of cheese or sauce; a pizza lover who likes things hot and spicy; or a diner who prefers your crusts gluten free — you can find the pizzas of your dreams (or order them “made up special”) at Shakey’s as well. A favo r i t e a m o n g Shakey’s fans is their Firehouse Pizza that has a “kick that makes a statement” but doesn’t “take over” the dish. Regardless of your personal pizza preferences, and some people crave very exotic toppings as opposed to the standard olives and onions — you

can be sure the dough for your Shakey’s Pizza is made fresh daily and Shakey’s signature sauce will be plentiful. Their “signature thin crust” or “pan pizza” options come as the Shakey’s Special, a trademarked pizza with salami, pepperoni, Italian sausage and season ground beef with mushrooms and black olives; Texas BBQ Chicken with sweet and smoky BBQ sauce, sliced
chicken breast, red onion and fresh cilantro; and the Hawaiian Delight, with sweet pineapple and ham — to name but three. (More choices are available on www.shakeys. com). Shakey’s Pizza offers Golden Fried Chicken and Mojo Potatoes, too. Chicken is also available as Wings and Strips. Stop in for Shakey’s Bunch of Lunch, the allyou-can-eat lunch buffet
from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. Typically there are eight pizzas to choose from on the “buffet line” plus salad, fried chicken, Mojo potatoes, spaghetti with meat sauce and dessert. We can guarantee you will not leave hungry. Shakey’s also serves a variety of refreshing drinks. For those who prefer an adult beverage, Shakey’s also offers a large selection of domestic and imported beers on
tap or by the bottle. Take advantage of Shakey’s Pizza’s daily specials, too. Order one medium pizza and get a second two-topping medium pizza for just $7.99. S h a key ’s a l s o h a s Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. with multiple options of “Under $5 menu” selections — Mojo Potatoes, Cheesy Garlic Bread, Pepperoni Pizza Twists, Wings, small piz-
za-one-topping-thin crust — as well as a selection of beer and “specialty margaritas” in Happy Hour sizes and prices. See specifics on the Happy Hour pages of Dining Out. Shakey’s Pizza, 14120 Bear Valley Road, #103, in Victorville, is open daily from 11 a.m. Online ordering is available, as are online coupons, at www. shakeys.com. Their telephone number is 760-9520100.
