From the editor’s desk

I

t’s been about a month since we launched our revamped Dining Out magazine and we continue to get compliments about it, both from readers and advertisers. We’ve had readers tell us they enjoy the stories on the restaurants, chefs and dishes, but we’ve had several tell us the feature they look forward to the most is our listing of restaurant grades. In response to reader inquiries, we’ve added a little more explainer text to the grades this week. For your information, you should know that these grades come straight f ro m S a n B e r n a rd i n o C o u n ty ’s Department of Public Health. On the county’s website, they have a tab for restaurant grades, as well as grades for swimming pools, tattoo parlors and other things. Once you find the tab, you can sort by restaurant name or city to find virtually any restaurant in San Bernardino County.

T h e l i s t i n gs a n d g rad e s a re updated after the health inspectors make visits. As we were putting together the list we print, we found that several restaurants were last graded in 2016. We left those off our list, deciding to wait for 2017 grades before putting them in the magazine. By necessity, we also left off numerous Victor Valley restaurants, as the list is just so long we would probably need to add 4-6 pages to include them all. So what we’re doing is rotating in and out some restaurants. This week, you’ll find numerous Victorville restaurants you haven’t seen before. In subsequent weeks, we’ll add in some from other High Desert cities and remove others. We’re happy you find this feature useful and we’re especially happy to hear our advertisers are seeing large upticks in traffic to their restaurants. Can you say win-win? — Steve Hunt

How college kids (or almost anyone) can save when dining out

D

ining halls may be the eatery of choice for college students, but that does not mean students don’t enjoy dining out. Tight budgets may make it difficult for some to dine out very often, but there are various ways for students to make dining out more affordable. Take advantage of your student status. Many

restaurants in the vicinity of college campuses offer student discounts to patrons who present their college identification cards to their servers or cashiers. Students who patronize such restaurants can save substantial amounts of money. L o o k fo r d i s co u n t nights. Just like many college-area restaurants offer

discounts to customers who present their student ID cards, others may host discount nights when certain items on their menus are offered at substantially discounted prices. Such discounts are traditionally offered on nights that would otherwise be slow nights for restaurants. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be slow nights for many establishments, and students might be able to find great meal deals on these nights. Abstain from alcohol. College students who are of legal drinking age can save money on date nights by abstaining from alcohol. A bottle of wine tends to be considerably more

expensive in a restaurant than it would be if customers were to purchase the same bottle at a nearby liquor store. College stu-

dents who still want to enjoy a drink during their next dinner out can save money by visiting BYOB restaurants.

D

ining out can make for an enjoyable evening or afternoon. Many people enjoy sampling different cuisines, and eating out removes the pressure and the work required when preparing meals at home. A 2 0 1 3 p o l l f ro m Rasmussen Reports found 58 percent of American adults say they dine out at least once a week, while 14 percent go out two or three times per week and 4 percent eat out more than three times per week. Dining out is also popular in Canada, where, according to Statistics Canada, restaurant sales per capita have increased steadily during the last 15 years. Across Canada, restaurants took in nearly

$650 per person in 2012. As the number of people dining out continues to increase, many people find themselves looking for ways to stay focused on healthy eating when they are not the ones preparing their meals. The following are a handful of ways diners can stay healthy without giving up their love of dining out: Don’t arrive at the restaurant too hungry. Eat a small and filling snack before going to a restaurant. Eating a snack ahead of time will prevent you from overeating once your food arrives. An apple, protein bar or some crackers and cheese can take the edge off hunger and reduce the likelihood that you will overeat at the restaurant.

Fill up on water. When the server comes to take your drink order, ask for some water if it’s not already on the table. The symptoms of dehydration mimic those of hunger. Also, drinking water before and during your meal will help you to feel full and decrease the likelihood that you will overeat. Engage in conversation. Bring someone with you to

the restaurant so you can share some lively conversation. The more time you spend talking, the longer it will take to eat, giving your body time to digest and prevent overeating. Choose the right foods. Broiled and grilled meats are healthier than fried foods, and steamed vegetables contain plenty of vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy.

Burgerim: A great new reason to go to The Mall Restaurant brings bold mini burgers, but not fast food, to The Mall of Victor Valley By Martial Haprov For Dining Out vvdailypress.com

first visit won’t be your last. Schoenbrun opened Burgerim — pronounced “Burger-eem,” a Hebrew word literally meaning “burgers” — in January and is methodically intro-

ducing local diners to the restaurant’s offerings — offerings that stray far from the normal mall food court fare. After not finding a Greater Los Angeles location suitable for one

of only 12 Burgerims in the U.S., Schoenbrun discovered the open spot in The Mall of Victor Valley late last year and in a few short months opened for business. In fact, it’s the only

Burgerim in existence to be operating inside a mall food court. But building the restaurant’s burgers in a space formerly occupied by some well-known golden arches hasn’t deterred Schoenbrun or

and flavors and overflowing at Burgerim — don’t forget, that’s “burger-eem.” And now is your chance to be ahead

of the game: while there are only a dozen open in the U.S. now, Schoenbrun says there are about 160 more in various planning

and construction stages across the nation. Visit Burgerim in The Mall of Victor Valley at 14400 Bear Valley Road

ordered otherwise — including two cheeses, to enhance their burger experience for an additional charge, and Burgerim’s order-taker Jackie suggests American cheese on the wagyu or a sunny-side-up egg on the chorizo patty. As if it didn’t already speak loudly enough for itself, the veggie burger is recommended without toppings. To say it’s “good as is” would be an understatement. While you can order the burgers in a la carte packs of two or three, the popular ordering fashion here is their duo or trio — two (duo) or three (trio) of the mini burgers accompanied by a drink (for which Burgerim offers unlimited refills while you’re dining in the mall) and a Burgerim side. Sides include their signature fries, sweet potato fries or onion rings, which one customer ordering at the Burgerim counter last week called “wicked.” A n d d o n’ t f o r ge t the sauces on the side. Burgerim has several made specifically for dipping your sides in, though their ranch, burger sauce and sweet chili sauce come highly recommended. Burgers and sides aren’t the only options here. For those in the mood for something a little different, order a loaded salad, a basket of chicken wings, a chorizo sausage wrap or one of three sandwiches, all of which can be customized with a lettuce wrap instead of the bun to minimize the carb-intake. Options are plentiful

his staff from giving food court patrons a different type of “mall cuisine.” And if there’s any question about that, the answers are found directly in the food. As noted in the name and multiple times already in this report, burgers — called “mini burgers” here — are the restaurant’s specialty. From photos and past reviews, one might assume they’re simply glorified sliders, but Schoenbrun insists this isn’t the case. A 2.8-ounce burger patty is hardly a slider. Diners can pick from 10 different patty options, five of which are beef. For those looking for a burger taste that soars light years beyond typical, try the wagyu. It boasts a hearty and authentic flavor made for true burger lovers and qualifies for a spot in the “best burger in town” category. The chorizo and merguez patties have a noticeable spicy kick and can make the palate tingle while the salmon and veggie burger patties are geared toward the vegetarian eaters. The veggie patty itself is quite a creation, one that’s done from scratch every day on-site. It comprises shredded carrots, tofu, lentils, onion, breadcrumbs and egg and is grilled to perfection for a bite full of texture, taste and tenderness that’s a popular option even among the carnivores. Diners can choose from nine different toppings — above the traditional lettuce, tomato and onion served on the mini-burgers unless

The Enchilada Omelette, Mile High Cafe’s unique specialty By Kathy Young Dining Out

re you looking for a fantastic eating experience — what we at Dining Out call the “signature dish”? Well, it pays to talk to the management. At Mile High Cafe in Old Town Hesperia, we contacted Paul Lyell. If anyone knows his eat-

ery’s signature dish, it’s Paul. He put it very simply: Having eaten omelettes “everywhere,” he said he has never come across any thing like Mile High’s popular enchilada omelette, a dish he calls “unique.” It has just enough “heat” to wake up your tastebuds, but on the spicy scale, he rates the dish as “neu-

tral.” If you want more heat, Paul says fresh jalapenos are always available. Just ask your friendly waitress for some of those peppers “on the side.” Benny Chavez, Mile High Cafe’s owner and chef (and Paul’s stepfather) is credited with developing the enchilada omelette. It has eggs, of course, with ground beef

and a bit of chorizo — a type of pork sausage — to impart that wonderful “enchilada” flavor. It plates beautifully, too, with sour cream, sliced black olives, thinsliced fresh green onion, and traditional enchilada red sauce or if you prefer, you can request the enchilada verde version. Our order came with homefries and plenty of

Mile High Cafe’s fantastic coffee. Paul added that 99 percent of everything served at Mile High Cafe is homemade and made fresh daily — including those wonderful home fries. The coffee is ground daily, too. Other “sides” choices with the signature enchilada omelette include

banana bread (also baked fresh every day) or a homemade biscuit with gravy. Don’t miss out on one of the High Desert’s truly unique signature dishes, the enchilada omelette at Mile High Cafe, 8832 Orange St., Hesperia Call 760-947-8844 and visit them on Facebook, Yelp!, and TripAdvisor. com.

o day is more special than a birthday, and we think everybody celebrating a birthday deserves a special cake. We also know someone who can make that special cake happen. Her name is Jacklin Tully, the creator of some very colorful and inventive specialty cakes for birthdays as well as for other occasions. Jacklin is the incredibly talented owner of Baconballs Cupcakery and Bake Supplies in Hesperia. Two associates at the Daily Press recently contacted Jacklin to order birthday cakes for two very special youngsters in their lives. The kids was celebrating their third birthday. Jacklin and Baconballs delivered — and to say the two two-layer cakes were well received would be an understatement. Waylon, who is “over the top” for Thomas the Train, asked his mom’s best friend Lisa to get him a Thomas cake. Lisa called Jacklin, and the wonderful “Thomas” cake (yellow cake with chocolate frosting) was the hit of the party. Izzy, granddaughter of Sonya in Circulation, received a colorful popcorn-themed cake, complete with icing “kernels” bursting out of a colorful

container and “balloons” decorating the bottom layer. Jacklin can “hold” 30 orders each weekend, but her calendar books up quickly. She is already booked up through three weeks in October and several weeks in January, which means you must plan ahead to get your

order in on time. A deposit of $25 or more, depending on your cake’s design, holds your “day” so that if some of the details are decided “at the last minute,” you’ll still receive your cake. If you know what you want but have questions about those details, bring

a photo to Baconballs and discuss your cake ideas with Jacklin. She can recreate any cake she sees or “tweak” the order to match your party decor. And customizing the cake is one of her specialties. Because everything is made from scratch, flavor and color combina-

tions are endless. While most people think signature cupcakes and cakeballs when they think of Baconballs, others appreciate Jacklin’s Cupcakery for the comprehensive inventory of pans, papers, edible glitters and trims plus other decorative supplies. Jacklin can also assist

with your own homebaked specialty cake creations, providing edible images and other fanciful items to make your cake the hit of the party. Oh, and Baconballs does cookies, too. Visit Baconballs, 10326 E Ave., Hesperia. Visit them on Facebook or call 760-881-9956.
