Welcome to the Farm! This week is one of the most important of the year for our staff and supporters as we take joy in celebrating our participants’ many achievements with their friends, family and volunteers. We are delighted that you have decided to join us for these very special days. Whether riding, driving or working on the ground with a horse, each participant is eager to share the things they have learned throughout the year. We invite you to enjoy the very special haven that is High Hopes while you watch horses, volunteers and participants demonstrate the bonds they have formed. I would also like to take a moment to recognize all of our sponsors whose generous support all year round makes the work that we do here at High Hopes possible. Thank you for sharing in this moment and for the help and support you give to our participants

and to our staff. If we can make your visit more enjoyable or you have questions, please feel free to reach out to any staff member. Enjoy your day at High Hopes!!

Horse Show Days Wednesday is

Patti Day High Hopes’ Training & Education Director, Patti Coyle, is retiring after giving many years to High Hopes and the Therapeutic Riding Industry as a whole. Please join us in wishing Patti and her husband, Chris, all the best in their retirement.

IMPACT As you observe your loved ones’ lesson today, you will surely be seeing the joy they have in their accomplishments. At High Hopes we practice Participant-Centered Therapeutic Horsesmanship. This means each lesson is tailored to each individual’s goals, both those specific to horsemanship and bigger picture life or educational goals. Here’s just a few of the ways therapeutic horsemanship enriches lives:

For unmounted participants, grooming and handling horses requires hand-eye coordination, sensitivity to different degrees of pressure or speed, and the ability to match and influence the horse beside them.

Physical Benefits: The horse’s walking gait is a dynamic, three-dimensional movement similar to the human walk. In fact, the average horse stride length is the same as the average human stride! When mounted, riders accommodate this movement through their pelvis and core causing them to engage their muscles, improve their posture and alignment, and access their vestibular system for balance. In a carriage the physical benefit is similar as the driver must accommodate changes in gait and terrain through their seat in the carriage. Though the seat has a back for support if needed, most drivers are encouraged to balance over their hips and use their core for good posture.

Cognitive Benefits: Working with horses requires total, in-themoment focus. Horses can be a great motivator for those who struggle to focus, as the horse will remind you quickly if your mind wanders. Many activities with horses, from grooming to steering, require sequencing and coordination. Participants learn how to use special equipment and communicate with a specific set of cues in order to get the reward of the horse’s response.

Many participants find the power of communication at High Hopes – with a horse they can be the leader, make a decision, or give a command and the horse will respond as a partner. This is a powerful feeling! High Hopes instructors may ask your educational goals, because with this attentive mindset, participants are often highly available for learning things like letter or color identification, or more advanced equestrian theory and terminology. These skills transfer to home, classroom, or work and participants may find that after they ride, it’s a bit easier to complete a homework assignment or stay focused on a task at work.

Social/Emotional Benefits: The bond between horse and participant cannot be overstated; these personal interactions are the core of how therapeutic horsemanship fosters a vibrant community. The horse is said to hold up a mirror to our true emotions and intentions, and for many being seen so nonjudgmentally is refreshing. There is something empowering about

building a relationship with a 1,000‌lb animal that is based on finesse, not force. Additionally, our amazing core of volunteers creates even more opportunities for developing social skills and teamwork. Participants may develop empathy and compassion toward their horse that transfers into relationships with others. They learn clarity in communication, turn-taking, and appropriate expression of emotions that carries over into social settings at home, work or school. By caring for their horse, participants find meaning, self-esteem, and satisfaction that is unique to this special work. What changes, benefits or impact have you seen from your own, or your loved ones’, work with horses? Please share your stories with us and with others and spread the word about the impact of therapeutic horsemanship!

congratulations

BLESSING

Each year, our volunteers and participants vote for their favorite horse for the High Hopes’ Horse of the Year. Blessing was born and raised to be a racehorse who pulls a carriage on the track – called a “pacer”. Blessing raced until he was 6 and earned nearly $40,000 in his career. After his retirement from racing, he was brought to East Haddam for retraining to work as a pleasure driving horse. He came to High Hopes in 2013 as a 9 year old. He is a smart and funny horse who loves to drive!

Horse of the Year

welcome to the

Legacy Society The Legacy Society provides a way to recognize the very generous benefactors who have made plans to benefit High Hopes mission with a planned gift. While personal and family obligations should always come first, a planned gift to High Hopes is a simple way to create an enduring legacy.

would you like to

Buy-a-Brick? Located next to Hartman Pond is the beautiful Legacy Garden. Throughout the garden are bricks memorializing the names of individuals who made a bequest to High Hopes in the past as well as honoring individuals who have joined our Legacy Society. Your gift can also be made in honor or memory of a family member, friend or cherished pet. The stone will be inscribed with that information, thereby providing a lasting memorial and long-term financial support for High Hopes. Contact Sara Qua, 860.434.1974 x 122 for more information.

Are you a veteran? Do you know a veteran? Sign-ups are open for The Equus Effect at High Hopes. Wednesdays, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm | July 10 to August 7, 2019 highhopestr.org/veterans or call 860.434.1974 and ask for Megan This five-week program is based on extensive research into the horsehuman bond. Through this program we help Veterans regain trust, respect and the willingness to collaborate with those they live and work with. Horses reveal their thoughts and feelings with their body language and behavior. They do not ask, demand, or expect anything from us. They want to feel safe, comfortable, and get along with others in their “herd.” Being with horses is known to have a calming effect and to boost selfesteem. High Hopes’ very special herd of horses are specifically chosen for their good nature, patience and willingness to interact with people of all ages.

¦ No Fee - thanks to our donors. ¦ 5-weeks | 3hrs per week. ¦ No riding - this is an unmounted program based in the principals of natural horsemanship. ¦ Lunch provided weeks 1 and 5. ¦ Accessible to those with special needs or abilities. ¦ No experience with horses needed. ¦ Facilitated by trained instructors

Time trots on, horses change and our lives move forward but one thing that never changes is our love for High Hopes, the horses and the friendships we have made for a lifetime. Thank you for another great year! We love you - from Matthew, Andrew and James

Matthew, Andrew & James - Keep up the good work! Love Jim & Bert

Thank You!

Share Hope - Endowment Campaign

Over the past 45 years, careful stewardship and planning by our organizational leadership has allowed High Hopes to develop into a nationally recognized leader in the field of equine assisted activities and therapies. Through annual fundraising, we underwrite 65% of every lesson we provide. However, our participants and their families face many hardships and almost 50% of our participants need additional financial assistance. To continue to provide services to all, regardless of their ability to pay, we must increase our current small endowment fund. The increase in the allowable drawdown we will be able to make each year will provide a buffer between the variable nature of donated revenue and the inevitable annual increases in our expenses. Won’t you join us? Pick up an endowment packet or ask to talk to Sara Qua.

THANK YOU! 96% of our workforce are volunteers.

To every one of our amazing volunteers.

We could not do this without all 652 of you.

However you can help, we have a place for you on our team. find out more at highhopestr.org/volunteer or call Marie Manero 860.434.1974 x 118

Congratulations to all of the participants & volunteers

Join us in building a thriving, healthy, sustainable Eastern Connecticut! Many of us who live in Eastern Connecticut have deep connections to its people and places. Perhaps you first came to the region seeking an education, a career, or an opportunity to serve your country. You may have been born here and have a family history in this corner of New England. No matter the individual circumstances, it is only natural to want to give back to the community that you call home. The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut stands ready to help you do that. We provide philanthropic guidance and can help you to learn more about the causes you care about. w w

We serve as the hub for meaningful philanthropy for 42 communities in New London, Windham and Tolland Counties. We help generous individuals, families and organizations – and their professional advisors - establish personally meaningful charitable funds that make a lasting impact on the issues and communities of greatest interest to them. We steward over 500 charitable funds for area donors, totaling more than $85 million in assets under management. We have awarded more than $56 million in grants and scholarships on behalf of area donors since we were founded in 1983. We help nonprofit organizations build their capacity to deliver on their important missions.
