HIGH IN STYLE the sophisticated way of living SEPTEMBER 2016
1
Welcome
to the September issue of HIGH IN STYLE!
MOVING ON Exactly one year ago I published our first edition of High In Style. Originally intended as a newsletter, I quickly changed the concept and came up with the idea of a monthly emagazine. Over the year I have met, collaborated and featured many inspiring women. We shared their amazing creativity, talents and journeys into entrepreneurship. A few months ago I got the opportunity to take our emagazine into print. Exciting yet scary, we are already working on our first printed edition due to be published mid-October. With that in mind, I have decided to change the magazine's name. You see, when I started the emagazine, I didn't really have any intentions of going into print that soon. I just had an idea, which I had to put out there. To see whether others would share my vision with me. To see whether we can create a readership around style, design and business. Now my journey is taking me into a different world again. I'm happy to be moving on because after all, if life stagnates, we stop growing and learning about ourselves. And that's what life should be about. Hope you can be part of it. Love,
Karolina xx Karolina Barnes editor in chief

Original Features text by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by Fiona Crisp
Relocating out of London brings new adventures on so many levels. Fiona Crisp from Styleophile did just that. After leaving London behind and moving to Bath, she took on a renovating project of her 5-storey spacious Georgian townhouse.
9
Being a Grade II listed property, Fiona had a challenge to create something in her own style and with her passion for colour while complying to strict local planning regulations. "We aimed to recreate our London chaotic-but-colourful lifestyle on a slightly more spacious scale, and with Georgian features that made our hearts beat a little faster." Once each room was given its function, it was pretty easy to decorate the space so every family member would be happy and content. They also converted the basement level, as it seemed excessive to leave just as the laundry room the previous owners had installed, into a separate one-bedroom garden apartment which offers more space when friends come to stay.

Georgian Glory words by Karolina Barnes, photography by Lauren Burns & Michal Podrucki
A luxury interior doesn't always have to be about latest trends. This colourful home in Derby is a perfect example of how to express your personality in a sophisticated, fun style. Mixing history with contemporary design this home is truly one of its kind.
15
Owned by William and Donna Hardcastle, this family home is an old listed property. But this ex-school house is not only their family residence for them and their four children, it is also where they work and have their interiors showroom. William designs all of the gorgeous sofas with a signature mixed fabric upholstery style. The building comprises of 41 rooms and once they are all renovated, they plan to open it up to the public for special events such as weddings or corporate away days. We talked to Donna about this exciting project.
“Throughout the house we have humour, funkiness and retro touches playing off against the ancient bones of the house.
16
17
1. WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT FOR THE DESIGN? We took over an old listed property, so really wanted to keep the grandeur and heritage intact throughout, mixed with our signature mix of luxe fabrics and unexpected colours. The concept is probably best summarised as "classical but never stuffy". For example, in the blue sitting room we wanted to make the most of the towering feature windows by creating a breezy space. We have the classical fireplace and marble, with a psychedelically distressed antique rug and a furry blue pouffĂŠ. We have pineapple and parrot ornaments, which are a modern and cheeky nod to something that may have been on the menu at a royal Georgian feast. Throughout the house, humour, funkiness, and retro touches are played off against the ancient bones of the house, and the opulent fabrics and textures that we love.
18
2. YOU HAVE A VERY DISTINCTIVE STYLE. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR DESIGN WORK? We love eclecticism, and really find inspiration from everywhere in Europe. The Light Boys’ incredible illuminated canvases, our decadent Lladro chandelier, and super fun Blackpop wallpaper are a few of our current favourites. Having said that, the most exciting and inspiring part of the design process is filling in the gaps, and making the conceptual and aesthetic links between pieces. For example, we have an old Georgian bathroom covered in lush leafy wallpaper, so we painted the toilet piping to look like bamboo! In our distressed evening sitting room we wanted to work on the moody grey backdrop to recreate the idea of a Victorian Illumination, and did this with some acid colours and really modern and graphic art on the walls and cushions. We have a lot of fun building upon the design inspiration of others and putting a playful twist on it.

Donna's 3 designer tips
1.
UP YOUR UPHOLSTERY GAME
2.
LOVE YOUR LOCAL ARTIST
3.
HIGH CONTRAST
99% of the sofas you can buy are made from a single type of fabric, but one of our favourite design signatures is mixed upholstery. Purple velvet plus floral flock? Fuchsia croc scales with a Fruit Salad pinstripe? Beautiful sofas make a great talking point, and are an opportunity to show your wild side.
Based in the Midlands, we are able to make contact with lots of fantastic artists. Not only can you find vibrant and new pieces for good value, but you can also often find themes in the work that really represent your local area or current events. I carefully selected and curated piece of local art really helps you to tell a personal story with your interior.
We have had fantastic results by using multiple chemical distressing processes on our rugs, and using silk and even glass-based wallpapers on our walls. Shine finishes or distressed surfaces can help any pops of colour in your space to take on an extra element of character. A combination of different textures- distressed stone, luscious velvet, rugged fur- all in the same colour is also a really bold and interesting statement to make.

COVER STORY
shop we love
Santorus words by Anouska Lancaster, photography by Catherine Laura
Introducing Santorus: the brand new British design house with its diverse and dynamic interiors and fashion collection. Fabian and Tara Santoro are the brother and sister team behind the new dynamic British design house Santorus. Coming from a background rich in design, their parents currently sit on The Society of British International Design (SBID) and are Patrons of the British Fashion Council Trust. It is their Italian/Indian cultural heritage which has truly inspired them to create their own artistic expression, bringing together these two seemingly contrasting cultures through art and design. Tara, an award winning designer and artist in her own right injects her trademark use of colour and casts the imagery that Fabian curates into Santorus’s unique collections and their signature eclectic prints. Tara and Fabian believe that any object can become a work of art not wanting to be restricted to any specific discipline they continue to create diverse and dynamic collections appealing to an ever more international audience.
23
1. HOW DID YOUR BUSINESS COME ABOUT? We have always lived in a household filled with art and new design, with both parents being Members of the Society of British International Design and The British Fashion Council Trust, and our enthusiasm to create new exciting collections and collaborate with other young artists has always been inspired by their projects.
24
It was when we fell in love with the work of a particular artist that we really came together with one idea to create something completely new and exciting. We always say Santorus was born from a catalyst of artistic individuals with big ideas. Tara began to develop and re-invent some of the original art pieces by injecting her own bold and flamboyant design aesthetic and together we reinterpreted them across fashion and interiors items. We wanted to create a luxury art-brand that had as much emphasis on grandeur as on personality and character: producing items made from the highest quality materials that could stand alone as piece of art but were still fun and didn’t take themselves too seriously! I think our current collection with its explosions of colour and hint of surrealism tells everyone exactly who Santorus is.
“Explosions of colour and hint of surrealisms is what we are about.”
25
2. WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DESIGN? It might be quicker to say what doesn’t inspire us! I think our eye for colour and design is hugely influenced by our own Indian and Italian heritage. We’re naturally drawn to vibrant patterns and artwork which tells a story – and we’re definitely not afraid to use colour! Living in London our sense of style and design is definitely inspired by the combination of history and tradition with the cosmopolitan nature of London life. The inspiration for a lot of our imagery comes from antique engravings and prints which we’ve injected with vibrant colour and quirky illustrations. For our first collection we wanted to convey our sense of humour, so we also played with whimsical and surreal elements to give this collection a unique narrative, earning its name "Madness is the Glory of Life”.
“Colour and pattern needs to tell the same story.” 3. HOW IMPORTANT IS COLOUR AND PATTERN IN YOUR DESIGN WORK? Our design work is all about colour and pattern! We wanted Santorus to be recognised for its trademark use of colour: bold but complementary tones that are reminiscent of exotic far flung lands, azure seas and other beautiful places around the world. Colour means so much more than a style choice, which is why we named each design in our wallpaper collection after Indian spices and precious stones. That’s when ‘colour’ becomes a smell, a taste, a memory… We always make sure that colour works together with the pattern – that they tell the same story. Our first collection has a traditional feel to it, with the antique style original illustrations, but vibrant flashes of colour and ombré tones give it a really modern twist. That’s why our interiors collection works really well with vintage pieces or 19th Century ornate style items, while at the same time would transform a modern, minimalist scheme with a burst of colour. Similarly with our fashion pieces, their elegant look can be paired with a chic evening dress, but the modern pops of colour also work as an urban sporty style. 26
4. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO LOVES COLOUR BUT IS AFRAID TO USE THEM IN THEIR HOME AND WARDROBE? MAYBE SOME TIPS? We recently had a customer who'd bought our "Madame Visage" wallpaper to decorate her hallway and asked us for some interiors styling advice. It’s such a dramatic print, so we made a mood board combining simple geometric patterns in neutral tones with a couple of statement antique style pieces such as an ornate gold mirror frame. Our wallpapers are perfect for statement walls, so with a neutral scheme you can add a burst of colour without needing to change too much. If you are cautious about adding colour, we always advise starting small with one of our vibrant cushions. "The Other Orient" velvet cushion transforms a modern minimalist sofa and is super versatile with its different prints and colours on each side. In your wardrobe, we find the perfect way to add some colour without a drastic overhaul is with an elegant Santorus scarf. You can just throw them on! For starters, all our scarves look beautiful when paired with a smart black outfit if you want to keep it simple. If you’re feeling more adventurous we have loads of "how to wear it" outfit looks for all 10 of our silk scarves and our t-shirts which you can find on our website or social media. We love giving styling advice and always want to hear about new ways to style or wear our items. If any of our customers are looking for advice we love for them to get in touch!

Beth Nicholas words by Athina Bluff, photography by Beth Nicholas
Internationally renowned British artist, Beth Nicholas, shares with us the story and inspiration behind her journey into becoming an artist who creates ethereal and immersive artwork filled with sophistication, energy and colour.
31
1. WHEN DID YOU REALISE YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR ART? Experimenting with colour and techniques has been a huge joy in my life, and I have always drawn and spuddled with different medium! But it was my mum that gifted me with a passion for art. She is an artist herself, so as a child, it wasn't long before I was attempting to copy and emulate her work. Our work now, of course, is completely different—Mum is a very skilled landscape painter while I’m focussed on abstraction—though one theme persists, which is the love of colour. I vividly remember the first time I fell in love with colour, the first time I really 'felt' how delicious it can be! My grandparents came to visit and gave me a beautiful pack of felt tips—the colours were so intense and vibrant, I fell in love with them immediately. They were great quality, probably a bit too old for a 2-year-old to be honest, but I cherished them. The same colours I loved then are the ones I am attracted to now. For me, there is nothing better than putting together a good colour combination.
32
2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE IN LIFE AND YOUR WORK? I've always felt like there were two sides to my personality, does that make sense? I have a soft side that is very gentle, serious, sensitive and thoughtful: a bit of an introvert. Then I can also be an extrovert: funny, cheeky and flirtatious. In a way my work allows that introvert to express themself, to fall into the colours, the compositions and the process.
3. HOW IMPORTANT IS COLOUR IN YOUR ART WORK? As you can see, colour is massively important to me, and there's something about blue...the calm serenity that I get from the colour blue and all its tones. I'm often asked if I could work in different colours and I do try, but I always come back to blue; it's a colour that resonates so deeply within me, that I am connected to it like I am connected to my work.
33
4. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU? With my work, there is something so wonderful, so exciting about every single piece! The work and I create together, I don't 'make' it, I manipulate and cajole it. I never know how anything is going to turn out, and I don't know even right up to the very last minute! The work itself inspires me. It's a difficult thing to describe, but each piece, if successful (and so much of it isn't), is so wildly different when you really look at it that it is virtually impossible not to start the next to see where that takes you.
5. ANY TIPS ON HOW WE CAN USE ART IN OUR HOMES? Oooh, yes! Lots of space if you're hanging large pieces. Frames and mounts are really important if you are hanging paper work, it’s essential to make sure the framing is plain so it doesn't detract from it.

sweater time THE ESSENTIALS words and images by Flavia Young
Perhaps September marks the highlight of the fashion calendar's year, there is so much happening that it's enough to make one's head spin on its axles. Fashion weeks happening around the globe, all the relevant fashion magazines launching their fashion special editions for the new season ahead, stores receiving the products they propose us to wear and so the list goes on. It is the shake up, dust off month when it comes to fashion. So for me, it makes perfect sense to crop the shopping list to essentials until I have pigeonholed all that is out there into "wants" vs "needs" and, in doing so, avoided expensive mistakes. Sweaters. September is synonymous with sweater time - the in between season's hardest working piece. And this year, a simple, neutral sweater will simply not cut it. Make a statement or go home is the new rule of the game. My lust list seems ever growing, as the offerings are endless in this overcrowded business, but largely, I know that if I stick to something along the lines of this selection (or similar budget dependant), I can't go wrong...

little treasures uncovered
House of Spring words by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by House of Spring
Every modern woman should have a pair of staple shoes in her wardrobe. That's what the founder and creative director of House of Spring, Radhia, believes in. Set up a few years ago, House of Spring is on a mission to bridge high street with luxury brands by offering elegant and effortlessly chic shoes that can be your staple pair of shoes everyday.
53
54
1. WHAT HAS LED YOU TO CREATING HOUSE OF SPRING COLLECTION OF SHOES? I wanted to create a brand since I was very young age, I just didn't know what it would be. In 2010, I met someone special in London and started to split my time between London and Paris. After few years of long-distance romance I decided to leave my job as a fashion buyer and relocate to London. However, I realised that to get to the same place in my career in a different city and culture would take me 2 3 years, so I was starting to think about doing something of my own. As a fashion buyer, scanning and analysing the fashion market is like a second nature to me. The more I was looking into it, the more I found that there is a niche for new designer shoes between the high street and luxury brands. I designed my first collection with the aim of making women to feel beautiful while bringing affordable luxury into the UK market.
“Parisians need a signature item; the one you wear when you need to feel strong.
55
56
2. WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT HOUSE OF SPRING SHOES? I am influenced by the Parisian effortless elegance and I enjoy the creative diversity that London has to offer. Both cities have heavily influenced my personal fashion style but also my design work. I have been strongly influenced by my mum too, who is a seasoned shoe hunter. Her passion for shoes are my constant inspiration. I try to design a contemporary shoe collection mixing French chic with the vibrant energy of London. I think that is what is so different about House of Spring. I aim to create the effortless elegance of Parisians together with London's bold fashion sense. Our shoes are designed for lovers of fashion who like shoes with an elegant twist. House of Spring’s philosophy is to create beautiful shoes with the highest standard of design, craftsmanship and comfort at an affordable price point. The shoes are designed in London and handmade in Portugal using the finest materials and craftsmanship.
57
58
3. HOW IMPORTANT IS COLOUR AND STYLE IN YOUR COLLECTION DESIGN? When it comes to style, I'm not influenced by current trends as such. As they say: "Trends come and go but style is forever." In terms of colours and texture, I spend a lot of time analysing colours which are versatile and timeless yet contemporary and interesting enough to make them desirable. I'm always looking for something that gives my designs an edge. My latest collection called "Mademoiselle" epitomises the modern woman. It features beautifully soft suedes and bold materials that reflect effortlessly chic and daring style.

SPF in every season:
Why bother? words and photography by Nicola McCullough
62
What is it about the lure of ankle boots and cosy knits that causes certain elements of our beauty routine to fall right next to those autumn leaves? De-fuzzing, self tanning and wearing sunscreen are the first to drop in my case. This year, I'm willing to let the first two slide, but will be slathering on sunscreen come rain, hail or shine. Here's why... 1.
Not a single ray of sun is required for skin damage to occur; UVA rays are out in force every day, every season.
2.
Products containing retinol, liquid exfoliants (AHAs/ BHAs) and hyper-pigmentation serums leave skin particularly vulnerable to UV damage. While among my favourites, they must be paired with SPF30+.
3.
Sunscreen doesn't only protect against skin cancer, it's also the most powerful anti-aging product out there. A final coat of skincare armour that's not worth skipping.
63
Happily, the days of thick, white, sticky sunscreens are long gone - and these three in particular stand out for me. Each one feels luxurious to apply and sits beautifully on my skin (with or without makeup), while providing broad spectrum protection. MOISTURISER WITH SPF - Perricone MD Photo Plasma This mineral-based moisturiser with SPF30 has a nourishing yet light, whipped-mousse texture and leaves a radiant sheen on the skin. PRIMER + SUNSCREEN - Kypris Heliotropic Pot of Shade A sophisticated organic primer, packed with botanicals to plump, hydrate and add luminosity while protecting skin with SPF30. Apply this silky cream over moisturiser as the perfect base for makeup. SPF50 DROPS - Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster: Use alone or add a few drops to your regular serum, moisturiser or foundation for instant protection from UV damage. Couldn't be easier or more foolproof.

tried & tested
SHISEIDO words and photography by Karla Cihak
Now with the summer holiday season being officially behind us, I've been looking for a foundation that complements the nature of my tanned complexion. I wanted something that has a light coverage, sun protection and hydrating characteristics. And so I was pleased to find Shiseido's Synchro Skin Lasting Liquid Foundation which was recently recommended to me. It is a smart, oil-free, long-lasting foundation that beautifully enhances the tone of my complexion. It feels really light and is almost undetectable. It has a buildable coverage so you can control how much coverage you need, while its matte, natural finish feels airy and silky smooth. In addition to that, I also bought the Luminizing Satin Face Colour Blush. Again it was recommended to me to try it and I can't find anything wrong with it so far. It has a beautiful texture with silky smooth, luminizing effect. It's easy to apply and blends really well. Moreover, it doeasn't appear cakey, rather it looks natural and adds depth and glowing radiance to my face. I'm already testing more new skincare for the next few issues, which I can't wait to share with you. Until next time...

Deola Charles words by Karolina Barnes, photography and images provided by Deola Charles
I talked to Deola Charles, the founder of Ille De Cocos, a chic, understated fashion label inspired by the stunning and unspoiled Cocos Island, about what led her to starting her business, her mission, challenges and advice she has for others wanting to start their own brand in the fashion industry.

1. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR? My journey has been far from conventional…with a degree in psychology and a flair for numbers, I still found myself drawn to the bright lights of Retail, so shortly after graduating I made a beeline for a career in Merchandising. Needless to say, I learned the many skills and tricks needed for ensuring stock was in the “right place at the right time” and how to respond to the desires of the consumer. My earlier years were full of inspiration, profoundly influencing my appreciation for luxury fashion and lifestyle, working for some of London’s most iconic brands, including Selfridges and The White Company. It was during my second stint at the latter that I landed a pivotal role leading the then relatively small, Clothing Merchandising department. The rapid growth and expansion that ensued over the next 6 years sparked a real passion for nurturing something small and seeing it flourish.
78
2. WHAT WAS THE MAIN TRIGGER FOR YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Passion has always eclipsed fear for me. Having always intended to start my own brand, I found myself completely seduced by my career in merchandising having achieved great success and rapid progression…the years simply flew by. Before I knew it I’d hit my mid-thirties and I really felt it was “now or never” to progress towards my lifelong dream. My unique experience at The White Company in many ways prepared me for life as an entrepreneur.
79
3. WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT ILLE DE COCOS? Ille De Cocos stands for a new style of minimalism that is understated whilst embracing individuality. Clean silhouettes and textured neutrals at the heart of the collection, enhanced by confident colour pops. Up close, each piece will reveal an array of finishing touches, from modern trims to beautiful stitch details. In luxuriously soft natural yarns, Ille De Cocos essentials feel beautiful to wear and are to be reached for again and again. Inspired by the stunning and remote Cocos Island, Ille De Cocos the label embodies an unspoiled and natural allure; the Ille De Cocos woman personifies an understated confidence and individuality, choosing to live her own way.
80
4. WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING YOU HAD TO LEARN WHEN SETTING UP YOUR OWN BRAND? The most challenging part of launching a business is deciding what to focus on first! It is such an exciting time and it is very tempting to pursue all of your ideas at once…Less is definitely more, especially when you are starting out to ensure you can stay focused.
5. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO CHANGE CAREER OR FOLLOW A PASSION FOR FASHION? I would encourage anyone thinking about pursuing their passion to get on and do it! Start small, do your research and seek others who are on the same journey, even if their business idea is fundamentally different. You will gain so much from having a like-minded network of support. Above all, don’t be afraid of failure…It is ok and part of the journey. Embrace the lessons as they come and you’ll be amazed by your own resilience.
