15 Inwoners van Lelievlei is na ’n verwoestende brand Vrydagaand, haweloos gelaat nadat die vuur vyf houthuisies tot op die grond afgebrand het. So het die noodlot sy tol geëis slegs ure nadat brandblussers deur 'n brandbestrydingsfirma van Lydenburg, aan die instansie geskenk is. Volgens mnr Deon Broekman wat een van die eerste persone op die toneel was, het die vuur ontstaan nadat 'n kers in een van die huisies omgewaai het. Binne minute was die brand totaal buite beheer nadat die blussers leeggespuit is, het die inwoners gepoog om die vuur met water onder beheer te bring, maar volgens mev Marie Fincham, wie se huisie ook afgebrand het, was die waterdruk te swak en moes hul staan en toekyk hoe die vlamme alles wat hulle besit, verswelg. Inwoners wie se huisies grens aan die area waar die brand plaasgevind het, het onmiddellik hul besittings na 'n veiliger plek gedra en alhoewel slegs geringe skade aan omliggende huise aangerig is, was dit nietemin 'n traumatiese ondervinding vir almal op die perseel. Die Burgermeester van Lydenburg, mnr Moses Marobela het Saterdagoggend op die toneel aangekom net om te sien hoe inwoners se besittings in die as lê en smeul. Klein Lee Anne Erasmus (3jr) het hom huilend vertel van haar pienk motorfietsie wat uitgebrand het en dat sy nie meer onderkleertjies het nie. Hy het vir haar kontant gegee om dit te vervang. Sy was egter baie opgewonde dat iemand haar witrotte uit die vuur kon red. Ouers en kinders het in die hope uitgebrande as gesoek na iets wat dalk nog gebruik kon word, maar dit was verniet. Net Jacque Botes was gelukkig toe hy sy oupa se medaljes, swartgebrand uit die as gehaal het. ’n Ander jong seun, André, het verdwaas rondgestaan. Hy het uitgesien na die rugby- en krieketseisoen en kon nie wag om sy nuwe rugbystewels te dra nie. Van hulle het niks oorgebly nie, ook nie van sy drome nie. Al sy sporttoerusting is in die brand vernietig. Volgens mnr Frik Rousseau, Bemarkingsbestuurder van Lelievlei, het weldoeners van die gemeenskap baie gehelp met skenkings soos voedsel, beddegoed, klere en ander donasies. Daar is egter nog 'n groot tekort aan skoonmaakmiddels, toiletware en skoolbenodighede. Lydenburg se mense het weer eens bewys dat hulle kan saamstaan in tye van nood. Locals affected by strike while dispute over wages continues Wage negotiations in the petroleum sector will resume on Tuesday, said the trade union Solidarity. Trade unions have agreed to return to the bargaining table, said Solidarity’s deputy general secretary, Dirk Hermann. “The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration will now intervene in the petroleum sector in a dispute meeting tomorrow at 1pm,” he said. Workers went on strike two weeks ago, causing fuel shortages in Gauteng, KwaZuluNatal and Limpopo.

The Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers’ Union has demanded a wage increase of 11 to 13 percent and a minimum wage of R6 000. It also wants a total ban on labour brokers and has asked employers to address issues of compassionate and maternity leave, the number of working hours and the shift allowance. Employers have offered a 10-percent increase for workers at the lowest level, raising their minimum wage from R4000 to R4 400. Other levels were offered eight percent

Mrs Marion Moir from Lydenburg writes: The www.lydenburg.org website evolved when the 2005/6 edition of the Lydenburg Town and Country map was printed as the internet was fast becoming a method of sourcing information. My involvement in the production of the map and registering the website on behalf of the Lydenburg Tourism Organisation, happened purely from contacts I knew in the business at the time. The initial set-up cost for the website was covered by the money spent for an advertisement on the map. Since then www.lydenburg.org has been a free service for the advertiser, the annual domain and maintenance fee being covered by myself as a service to the community, as the Lydenburg Tourism organisation had not actively functioned as an organisation for the past 5-6 years. General email enquiries came to me and they varied from who to contact to get a traffic fine reduced, finding long lost relatives graves, greeting relatives for the ten years anniversary of the Longtom bus accident to finding which bridge grandfather had helped build in 1922, but it is now time for a change. Lydenburg is no long a small dorp and a different approach is being taken by the Lydenburg Business Chamber to promote our growing town. The Lydenburg Business Chamber website has been launched. Daarna tot in Kaapstad en dan op oor Vredenburg, Keimoes, Kuruman en deur Noordwes terug huis toe. Hierdie toer sal saam met my seun op twee “adventure bikes” wees. Ja hierdie droom moet ek bewaarheid. Ons beplan reeds volstoom. Hoeveel kilometers ry ons op ’n dag, by watter gastehuise gaan ons slaap ens. Hoeveel dae spandeer ons in die Wildernis omgewing en hoeveel in die Kaap. Ons wil die ou passe by Wildernis gaan ry, Chapmans Peak en die kabelkar. Een van die dae!

Petro Jones het ook die Azalia’s aangeplant langs die pad in Sabie en Graskop wat deur die toeriste bewonder word. Azalias, insluitend protea’s en ander blomme, floreer onder haar hande. Die egpaar nooi graag almal om die blomme te kom besigtig. Dit is voorwaar pitkos vir die siel en ’n heerlike uitstappie in die natuur. Die Jones-egpaar is al die derde geslag wat op die plaas bly. At the meeting, the CMR was one of the organizations that gave a presentation. Juffrou klim Kilimanjaro

Gerda Venter, onderwyser aan die Lydenburg Hoërskool, (heel links) in Kenia. SY het daad by woord gehou en een van die mees uitdagendste berge in die wêreld uitgeklim. Met ’n baie avontuurlustige sy het me. Gerda Venter, verbonde aan die Lydenburg Hoërskool, die afgelope skoolvakansie Kilimanjaro aangedurf vanaf 9 tot 16 Julie. “Ek is baie lief vir enige avontuur,” het sy gesê. Die ekspedisie was ses dae lank waar hulle elke dag gemiddeld 1000 meter geklim het. Die groep het uit ses lede bestaan, waarvan die ouderdomme gewissel het tussen 25 en 55 jaar. Dit was ’n ongelooflike ervaring. Die weer het hulle nie benadeel nie en die atmosfeer op die berg was onbeskryflik! Die dag wat hulle “gesummit” het, was hulle 22 ure wakker. Hulle het die Woensdagaand, 13 Julie om 12:00 opgestaan, en was Donderdag 14 Julie teen 20:45 by die kamp, waar hulle oorgeslaap het. “Mens leer jouself op ander maniere ken terwyl jy deur ’n klomp emosies werk. Ek sien al klaar uit na die volgende “uitstappie”, het sy vertel. Gerda was reeds twee dae nadat hulle geland het op haar pos by die skool. So ’n strawwe bergklim sit nie in enige persoon se broek nie. “Pole - pole” - beteken voetjie-vir-voetjie, stadig... in Swahili. ~ Michelle Boshoff

Why hearing aids make all the difference I have been manufacturing repairing and fitting hearing aids for 23 years. During this time I have noticed many changes in the technology of hearing instruments, but I have also become aware of many misconceptions over what a hearing aid can and cannot do for a person. I think a lot of these misconceptions have been driven by the industry itself, through creating unreal expectations. Statements such as ‘hear only what you want to hear’ and ‘hear in noise’ are not true for everybody. There is no hearing aid in this world that can replace the hearing that you may have lost. Because we can only work with the hearing a person still has, it’s very important for me to ensure that I have explained to the person what he or she can expect to get from the aid. I do an extensive hearing test that measures the hearing that remains, rather than concentrate on what has been lost. We call this ‘residual hearing.’ Some people react well to amplified sound, while others don’t necessarily hear or understand speech

better when sounds are made louder. Two people can have the same hearing loss when tested with ‘peep tones’, but when tested with ‘speech’ words, I often find substantial differences. Advantage Hearing represent Bernafon hearing aids, which are engineered in Switzerland. These modern hearing aids are able to measure what is happening in your environment and make adjustments automatically for you. In fact I have always believed in automatic hearing aid technology and I developed our first fully automatic hearing aids back in 1994. Of course today they are just more automatic. Automatic means that the instrument is able to know what loudness of sound is in the environment and whether speech is present or not. The instrument will then adjust its volume and start to pick up fewer sounds from behind if necessary.

Modern hearing aids also know whether they are starting to make that annoying whistling sound and are better able to counteract it. They also ‘remember’ what kinds of listening environment you have been in. This information is stored in the instrument and allows us to better understand your requirements and adjust your hearing aid more specifically to your needs. Hearing aids are fitting without blocking the ears. This is called open fitting. Open fit allows the sounds that they can hear, to enter and leave the ear in a normal way. We just add the extra sound to this through the instrument. This creates a much more natural sound for the person. (By Colin Sampson, owner of Advantage Hearing).

Dit is jammer dat die eerste een na die wegkyk nie mooi vol gevang is nie, maar waar dit terugval in die water, dink ek is ’n baie mooi aksie foto. A water Purification Plant was built and commissioned in Mampuru Village during 2010 by the District Municipality, but during the implementation phase a few difficulties and challenges were indentified and the project was delayed. Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) decided to use the opportunity to assist the roleplayers, who included the Municipality and community, by providing the necessary capacity to complete the project. ECM arranged the COC (Certificate of Compliance), in order for Eskom to connect the power and replaced the non-return valve. ECM also did pipe modifications and replaced the DOL (Direct on line starter) and finally

commissioned the plant. The formal handover took place on 15 July. Present during the formal handover w a s M r Ts e k e S e k h u k h u n e , Metallurgical Manager from ECM and Mr Ntsoane, Senior Manager of the Sekhukhune Water District. Mr Ntsoane was impressed with the initiative taken by ECM and Mr Rampele, Site Manager of the Sekhukhune Water District and the Water Committee thanked ECM for making a difference in the Mampuru Community. Through this initiative the Mampuru community now has access to water. Mr. Emile Britz, ECM General Manager said that it is important for companies to assist the local municipalities with capacity building.

Alert Steel expands retail network through container project says the containers will initially be deployed in close proximity to its existing branches but the company is also looking at deploying the containers in areas where it does not currently operate. “They are primarily intended to serve rural markets, which have shown promising growth, and will become a big component of our corporate social responsibility programme,” he says. “In addition to serving these communities, each container will initiate or adopt an uplift programme in consultation with local stakeholders.” The company intends to dispatch 50 Alert Express containers within the current financial year ending 30 June 2012 and each container is projected to sell approximately 24 tonnes of material per month.

Alt-X listed Alert Steel has expanded its retail network through the deployment of small mobile retailing centres in rural areas, as well as to areas where the company currently has no distribution presence. Known as the Alert Express container project, the retailing centres are converted shipping containers with a floor area of 36m². One half of the floor space will be used to stock long length products while the other half will be used to stock steel related items and will also serve as the retail floor. The containers will stock all fast moving products as identified by the nearest Alert store and customers will also be able to place orders for items not carried. ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine made another wonderful contribution towards the youth of Maroga Community. On Friday 22 July a handover ceremony was held at Mpusheng Crèche that is situated in the front yard of ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine. Two beautiful classrooms were constructed by Evilox 189 cc that specializes in building, renovations, steelwork and general trading. Evilox 189 cc had to employ people from the local community to help with this project, thus creating thirty three job opportunities for unemployed people. Dunstan Lowan (Managing Member) from PIPAS Business Consortium also made a contribution towards Mpusheng Crèche by sponsoring the Crèche with educational toys, cutlery and tools to keep the Crèche neat and tidy. The function started with the toddlers singing a welcoming song that made all hearts feel warm. Ms Emsie Henderson (Human Resources Manager) and Mr Kleinjan du Toit (Deputy Chief Executive Officer: Operations) kindly introduced the whole team who played an important role in the achievement of this project, and gave a short introduction in what ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine's vision is. Mining Show on 2 September LAST year Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines held their first Winterveld Festival. MTE and Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines would like to announce that this year they decided to partner by presenting the Annual Steelpoort Mining and Technical Exhibition and the Winterveld Festival on two consecutive days at the Winterveld Recreational Club (Rugby Grounds) in Steelpoort. The Mining Exhibition will take place on Friday 2 September starting at 13h00. MTE is the well known South African travelling Mining exhibition company. Ons toets die Hyundai i30 HIERDIE is ons eerste kennismaking met een van die nuwe geslag Hyundai’s. Met dié fabrikaat se nuwe handelaarskap in Lydenburg, het ons dié week die geleentheid gekry om die nuwe i30 te toets. Hierdie motor ding in die besondere moeilike C-marksegment mee. Dit is die tuiste van Golf, Astra, Mazda 3 en Ford Focus, almal besondere goeie motors. Die Hyundai i30 is beskikbaar in beide 1.6 en 2.0 liter weergawes. Ons het die 1.6 liter getoets wat verkoop teen R 197 900. Die vlak van toerusting het ons verstom. Daar is leersitplekke, 8 lugsakke, ABS met EBD, glybeheer (ESP), sattelietkontroles op die stuurwiel, 16 duim allooiwiele met ’n volgrootte allooi spaarwiel, ’n ritrekenaar, diepte en hoogte verstelbare stuurwiel, klankstelsel met radio / CD / MP3 / AUX / USB, outomatiese klimaatbeheer, outomatiese ligte, outomatiese binnespieël, elektriese buitespieëls met flikkerligte op, sentrale sleutellose toegang, alarm en kragstuur. Op die tweeliter kry jy ’n sondak, togbeheer (cruise control) en 17 duim allooiwiele. Daar is hope plekkies binne vir sleutels, sonbrille, sigarette en sulke dinge. Daar is ’n asbak (dankie tog!), ’n sigaretaansteker en 12V sok. Hierdie motor is gelaai. Die i30 is ruim en gerieflik binne, met ’n behoorlike bagasiebak. Daar is skyfremme op al vier wiele. Ek het so drie jaar terug gesê die Koreane met hulle Kia’s, Hyundai’s en Daewoo’s (Chevrolet’s) haal die Jappaners vinnig in. Vandag kan ek sonder twyfel die stelling maak dat wat bougehalte, gerief en toerusting betref, hulle die Japanese voertuie nou waarskynlik ewenaar of selfs verbygesteek het. Hierdie i30 het slegs kompetisie vanaf die Duitsers met VW en Opel en altwee is minstens R40 000 duurder in klas. Die i30 is mooi, sonder om besonders te wees. Ek het gehou van die lyne op die enjinkap en die lippie bokant die agterruit. Die allooiwiele is nie blink of swart nie, so tussen in. Van

voor af trek die i30 bietjie na ’n Mazda. Op die pad was die Hyundai uitstekend. Kontroles is lig, die ratskakeling op die vyfspoed kas seepglad en die 1.6 loop ’n hond uit ’n bos. Die kW en Nm syfers doen nie die ware werkverrigting gestand nie. Nie dat 89 kW te versmaai is vir ’n 1600 nie. Dit loop egter nog beter as wat die syfers vertel. Die motor trek goed teen opdraendes, steek maklik verby en die enjin is stil en seepglad. Remme is baie goed, sonder om oordadig te wees. Teen 120 km/u draai die enjin teen sowat 3 700 omwntelinge per minuut en teen 140 doen dit 4 200 opm. Wat veral beïndruk het was die stuurwiel se gewig op die oop pad. Meeste motors met elektriese kragstuur is te sensitief op spoed, maar dit is asof die i30 se stuur effe swaarder word op spoed, wat dit uiters stabiel en rigtingvas maak. Daar is geen teken van senuagtigheid nie. Die veerstelsel is ferm en doodstil, selfs op ongelyke paaie. Ek glo die tweeliter sal nog beter wees, maar vir my geld is die 1.6 perfek. ’n Uitstekende motor waarmee ek niks fout kon vind nie. Wel gedaan Hyundai! Andre Coetzee

We test the new Kia Picanto KIA’s slogan for their new Picanto is “Awesome”. We agree. The Highlands Panorama News took the middle LX version for a test drive last week. What a car! It truly is awesome. The base model sells for R99 999, the LX for around R107 000, and the full-house EX for around R114 000. The LX comes with air conditioner, folding rear seats, Mp3 radio/CD (6 speakers on EX), trip computer, passenger seat storage, fog lights, front electric windows, rear spoiler, alarm immobiliser, iPod and Aux in connections, tilt adjustable steering wheel, ABS (on EX), airbags, (driver only in base), ISOFIX baby seat mounts, central locking, luggage floor box, shift indicator, and power steering. On EX electric side mirrors, (optional sunroof), bluetooth, leather steering, alloy wheels, ABS, bigger engine, and a host of other goodies are available. All models come with a 5-year / 100 000 km warranty and 3-year unlimited km roadside assist plan. The base and LX models are powered by a three cylinder 1-litre engine making 51 kW and the EX is powered by a class leading 65 kW in line four, 1.2 litre engine. All have 5-speed gearboxes, and automatics are also available. On the road the Picanto performed exceptionally well. Steering, gearshift, clutch and brake pedals operate smoothly with the lightest of input. I was surprised by the little 1-litre’s pulling power. In typical triple style, the engine had a healthy growl when pushed hard. The engine turns at 4 000 rpm at 120 and at 4 500 rpm at 140 km/h. The car is stable, the brakes phenomenal and the suspension quiet. Because it is a small car, above 140 km/h, the car becomes a bit busy and requires your full concentration, but in my opinion it handles better than most cars in this segment. The tuning circle is tight and the car is easy to maneuvre and park. Co2 emissions and fuel consumption seem to be class leading. The doors open and shut with a reassuring “clunk” and the build quality is obvious. Styling is by Peter Shreiyer and the car looks good. It is available in 10 funky colours. What is there to criticise? Nothing at all. Seriously. I find it very difficult to write about a car without something to criticise. Ok, if I must, it is nice looking, but small cars are not my cup of tea. The new Kia Picanto is awesome. At the price it will sell like hotcakes! Very well done KIA! Andre Coetzee

Langtermyn indrukke: Yamaha XT660Z Tenere EK ry die Yamaha XT660Z Tenere nou bykans ’n jaar en ken dié fiets nou redelik goed. Ek het groot geword met groot enkelsilinder “scramblers” en het nog nooit die begeerte gehad om ’n superfiets te besit nie. Hulle het ook elke Japanese fabrikaat ingesluit, maar die meeste was Yamaha’s. Nee, as ek opgradeer sal dit ’n Yamaha 1200 Tenere, KTM 990 Adventure of BMW 1200GS Adventure wees. Maar ek het ’n bepaalde probleem met die “grotes”. Ek is baie lig. Ek is ook oud en nie baie fiks nie. Die grotes is vir my te swaar en hulle is te ver weg van ’n groot “scrambler”. Nie dat die 660 Tenere ’n “scrambler” is nie. Daarvoor is dit ook te swaar. Dié fiets is egter op Yamaha se Dakar model geskoei, met die grootste petroltenk in sy klas, besondere grondvryhoogte en natuurlik Yamaha se legendariese groot enkelsilinder wat destyds by die XT500 begin het. Dié enjin is sowaar “bulletproof” en kan heeldag naby die rooilyn toer. Met dubbelskyfremme voor en ’n enkelskyf agter met Brembo knypers, is die fiets se remme uitstekend. ABS is as ’n opsie op dié model beskikbaar en op die 1200 standaard, met ’n paar ander hulpmiddels soos traksiebeheer daarby. My grootste klagte is die hoë sitplek, wat op en af klim moeilik maak, veral met ’n “topbox” vir bagasie op. Jy klim op soos ’n meisie! Met my 1.8 meter lengte raak albei voete steeds nie grond as jy stilstaan op die fiets nie. Daar is ’n behoorlike windskerm, wat net-net te laag is, sodat die wind op hoë spoed jou valhelm rondskud (buffet). Die enjin het brandtofinspuiting en vat baie maklik. Versneller reaksie is goed en wringkrag vir ’n 660 enkel ongelooflik. Met ’n aangepaste uitlaatsisteem is kraglewering goed, maar die fiets raas soos net ’n enkel kan. Die standaardpyp is doodstil. Hulle sê “Loud pipes save lives” en ek kan dit glo, want party motorfietse is so stil, jy hoor hulle nie aankom nie. Daar is nie baie ander fieterjasie nie. Ek het myne toegerus met ’n 12V kragsok en GPS houer, groter windskerm, LED flikkerligte, Nightbreaker hoofligte, verwarmde handvatsels, ’n stel Stealth uitlaatpype sonder CAT en ’n groter voet vir die systaander. Ek het die fiets gekoop met handbeskermers wat ook die koppelaar en voorste remhefbome beskerm, ’n alluminium enjinbeskermer, hoër voorste modderskerm en ’n Yamaha boonste bagasiekas. Bybehore vir dié fiets is vryelik bekombaar vanaf maatskappye soos Touratech. Op die pad loop die Tenere baie goed tot op sowat 150 km/u. Die wielbasisafstand is egter kort en bo hierdie spoed is die fiets nie gelukkig nie. Dit “fishtail” en die wind raak vir dié fiets ’n probleem. Die veerstelsel en sitplek is egter baie gemaklik. Teen 110-130 km/u kan jy heeldag in die saal bly op die langpad. Brandstofverbruik as jy hom roer is sowat 21 km/l en met die groot tenk van 22 liter kyk jy na 400 km tussen pompe, wat die heel beste in die mark is. Die groot tenk beskerm ook jou bene en selfs in die reën, bly jou broekspype droog. Die vraag wat almal my vra, is of die fiets werk op die langpad. Wel, ek ry saam met my seun en sy vriende, wat se fietse wissel van 800 tot 1400 monsters. As die manne jaag, hou ek nie heeltemaal by nie. Maar in die draaie en teen berge op, werk die 660 soos ’n bom. Jy kan heeldag 140 ry, maar dit is nie die punt nie. As jy toer, wil jy gemaklik wees en rondkyk. Jy wil die wêreld sien. Enigiets meer as 120 en jy toer nie meer nie. Die besonder hoë sitposissie is ’n fees. Jy kyk letterlik oor die dakke van 80% van die ander verkeer op die pad en kan behoorlik sien. Wat verder vir die XT 660Z tel is die relatief lae gewig, die fenomenale enjin en die lae diens- en instandhoudingskoste wat tipies van Yamaha is. Die aankoopprys is ook uitstekend, maar klop nie Kawasaki se (baie goeie) KLR 650 se prys nie. Alles in ag genome is hierdie ’n droommotorfiets. Sy agressiewe voorkoms het al kommentaar van “Transformers” of ’n insek uitgelok en almal wil waar ek stop, meer van die fiets weet. Wat die 500 tot 700 cc mark vir avontuurfietse betref, ingesluit BMW se GS 650, is die 660 Tenere die baas in die klas! Interessant is dat dié fiets onder lisensie deur die formidabele Aprilia maatskappy in Italië gebou word en dat alle onderdele die beste op die mark is. Bosch elektronika, Brembo remme, Sachs skokbrekers ens. Daar is beslis ’n alternatief vir ’n BMW! Praat gerus met McGee en Kie vir die avontuur van jou lewe. Andre Coetzee.

Ons toets die Chevrolet Orlando AS jy ’n vyf tot sewe sitplek familievoertuig soek met al die geriewe, in die R 254 000 prysklas, hoef jy nie verder te kyk as die Chevrolet Orlando LS nie. In dieselfde grootte en veeldoelklas as Mazda 5 en Toyota Verso 1.6 SX, is die Orlando gelaai en tog meer bekostigbaar. Dit kom met multifunksie kragstuur wat op en af en in en uit verstelbaar is, elektriese ruite, elektriese spieëls, lugversorging, togbeheer (cruise control), agterste parkeersensors, sonbrilhouer, radio / CD speler met AUX en ses luidsprekers, satellietkontroles op die stuurwiel, armrus vir die bestuurder, ritrekenaar, ABS met EBD, ESP, TC, BA, ses lugsakke, ISOFIX kinderstoelmontering met die fasiliteit om daardie lugsak af te skakel, sentrale sluit, outomatiese deursluit na wegtrek, en alarm / immobiliseerder. Op die LT model is daar leersitplekke, 18 duim wiele, klimaatbeheer, outomatiese ruitveërs en outomatiese hoofligbeheer. Albei kom met die 1800 Ecotec enjin uit die Cruze en met ’n seepgladde vyfspoedratkas. Dié enjin maak 104 kW en 176 Nm en is baie gewillig met die rooilyn eers by 6 500 opm. Wat almal by die koerant beïndruk het, was die spieëltjie binne waarmee jy die hele passsiersruim en die gewoel van die kinders kan dophou. Ook die wegsteekplekkie agter die radio het beïndruk. Alle kontroles is maklik binne bereik en werk goed. Op die pad het die Orlando my verbaas. Vanaf wegrek is dit nie ’n renmotor nie, maar die Orlando loop op sy beste op die oop pad teen 140 km/u. Op 120 toer die enjin teen 3 500 opm, op 140 teen 4 000 en op 160 draai die enjin teen 4 500 opm. Teen 140 hou dit spoed, selfs teen ligte opdraendes. Dié ooppad toervermoë en veral die onderstel maak hierdie wa ’n leier in sy klas. Die onderstel en veerstelsel is soos op die Cruze, uitsonderlik goed. Die stuur is reg,

skyfremme op al vier wiele uitstekend en met die 17 duim wiele (LS) hou dié voertuig pad soos min. Dit is uiters stabiel en rigtingvas. Brandstofverbruik op gelykpad teen 120 km/u was volgens die ritrekenaar slegs sowat 6.7 km/l. Met sy 64 liter tenk, sal die Chevy Orlando baie ekonomies wees en vêr kan ry. Die Orlando het voor dieselfde agressiewe voorkom as sy grootboet die Captiva. Agter lyk dit nogal na ’n klein Mercedes Vito en die opwaartse vensterlyn aan die kant herinner aan die Kia Sportage. Met ’n tipiese boksvorm soos die meeste SUV’s sal die Orlando nie in almal se smaak val wat “looks” betref nie, maar die binneruim en padgedrag maak hiervoor op. Dit is voorwaar ’n skittervoertuig wat in al die behoeftes van ’n gesin sal voldoen. Met die sewe sitplekke beskikbaar is die bagasieruim klein, maar met die agterste ry afgeslaan is die bagasie ruim baie groot. Ek het min kritiek. Soos op die Sportage is die uitsig na agter deur die binnespieël beperk, die enjin is hoorbaar as jy hom werk en die agterste luikdeur maak raserig toe. Alles in age genome insluitend prys, is die nuwe Chevrolet Orlando ’n wenner. Dit kom met ’n 5-jaar / 120 000 km waarborg en 3-jaar / 60 000 km diensplan. Andre Coetzee.

Bulletjies maak geskiedenis DIE o.10 rugbyspan van die Laerskool Lydenburg het hul harte uitgespeel die naweek en het as wenner uitgetree in die Bondedag Grootskole Rugby. Hulle het Laerskool Orion van Alberton in die finaal uitgeklop. Dit is die eerste keer in die geskiedenis van Laerskool Lydenburg dat ’n span hierdie eer behaal het. Die wedstryd het die afgelope naweek in Pietersburg plaasgevind. Die klein spelertjies het met baie groot harte gespeel. Die seuns se afrigters Riaan (Torros) Pretorius en Kallie Erasmus is trots op hul harde werk. Vir Torros is hulle soos sy eie ‘kuikens’. Die skoolhoof, Cornelius Lemmer, het ook breëbors die oorwinning gevier. Hierdie is die hoogste sport wat ’n Laerskool kan bereik. Die bondedag word net elke tweede jaar aangebied, wat dit nog moeiliker maak om dié toernooi te wen. Die span het in 2011 nie een wedstryd verloor nie. Hulle het 512 punte aangeteken met sleg 50 punte teen hulle. Hierdie span met dopgehou word, want hulle gaan nog groot hoogtes bereik.
