Arrest of alleged fraudster LYDENBURG was in uproar last week after it became known that someone was arrested for the alleged fraud at the Thaba Chweu Municipality. Mr Abdool Gani Anver Kalla was arrested and appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate Court on 28 July. It is alleged that he is connected to the missing R7,5 million in prepaid electricity sales in the Thaba Chweu Municipality. The DA opened a theft case at the Lydenburg SAPS on June 23, when it emerged that the money in question had not been paid over to the Thaba Chweu Municipality by the Engen filling station, which was owned by Kalla at the time. It had also emerged that the filling station had not been registered as a debtor at the Municipality. After the charges were laid, the Department of Priority Crime Investigation (The Hawks) took over the investigation, resulting in Kalla’s arrest in Polokwane last week. According to reports, Kalla was supposed to have deposited the proceeds from the sales into the Municipality’s account, but police found that it never happened. In his brief court appearance Kalla was not asked to plead, and was released on R100 000 bail. He is expected to appear again on September 28. The DA wishes to congratulate the SAPS and the Hawks with the prompt arrest, and expresses it hope that the investigation would continue at such an efficient pace. This Municipality has been rocked by scandal after scandal, and residents deserve to see justice take its course. The DA will keep a close eye on proceedings on this, and other criminal cases laid in this Municipality.

Safety and responsibility ON 26 and 27 July, Samancor Chrome Head Office visited Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) and participated in communication sessions with all employees. The CEO, Jürgen Schalamon, emphasized that it is the vision of Samancor to become the world’s largest producer of ferrochrome. General Manager, Emile Britz highlighted the importance of production and safety in achieving the company’s vision. To that effect, employees were entertained by an industrial theater, whereby the importance of safety was confirmed. Each employee was a given cap with the inscription, “our safety, my responsibility”. ECM believes in the principle of “brother’s keeper”, whereby each employee must look out for one other employee and help keep one another safe.

WERKNEMERS van Lydenburg Visserye wat ’n deel is van Mpumalanga Toerisme en Parke Agentskap (MTPA) neem sedert 26 Julie aan 'n volskaalse staking deel, wat een van van die grootste is in die geskiedenis van die Parkeraad. NEHAWU (National Education & Health Allied Workers Union) lede wat die meerderheid werkers van die Parkeraad verteenwoordig, staak oor loonverskille,
behuising- en bystandtoelae. Lede van die Vereniging van Staatsamptenare (VSA) neem nie aan die staking deel nie. Werknemers vereis ’n salarisverhoging van 15% nadat ’n 7% verhoging reeds aangebied is, ook ’n R200p/m verhoging op behuisingsubsidies en ’n bystandtoelaag. Onderhandelings het nog geen skikking opgelewer nie en alhoewel dit ’n vreedsame staking is, word daar verwag dat dit vir ’n onbepaalde tyd sal voortgaan tot hulle tevrede is met die verhoging en hul eise. Werkers van Lydenburg Visserye en ook ander reservate in Mpumalanga, soos Sterkspruit Reservaat en Ohrigstaddam voel dat hulle oor die laaste paar jaar tevrede was met enige verhoging maar soos sake nou staan, hulle die 7% verhoging nie sal aanvaar nie. Ope-brief aan medematrikulante van die Hoërskool Lydenburg Anushka van der Merwe skryf: Ek was al deel van ’n laerskool, ’n klein hoërskool en ek was “getuisskool”. Die laaste tree van my skool-opleiding, is tans by Hoërskool Lydenburg. Die spesifieke ondervinding is vir my die onaangenaamste van almal. Myns insiens is daar lede van die groep wat nog nie die volwassenheid bereik het, wat ’n mens sou verwag van ’n matriekleerling nie. Eerlikheid en openhartigheid is twee van my sterkste eienskappe waarop ek baie trots is. My persoonlike ondervinding is dat daardie twee eienskappe die redes is vir my ongewildheid tussen sekere leerders. Dit verbaas my egter nie dat daar leerlinge is wat agterbaks en onderduims is nie, aangesien ons ervaring na twee jaar in die dorp, dieselfde is van sekere volwasse mense. Om verantwoordelikheid vir eie optrede te aanvaar en eerlik te wees, is net eenvoudig nie haalbaar vir party mense nie. Dan word ek behandel asof my eienskappe iets is om oor skaam te wees. Die ironie van die saak is dat die betrokke mense Christenskap soos ’n jas dra, een wat Sondae aangetrek word vir ’n uur of twee, nou en dan met kerkbasare... maar verder hang dit op die kapstok tot volgende Sondag. Gelukkig ervaar ek die MEERDERHEID matrikulante as gawe, volwasse en opregte mense. Dankie vir dié groep wat my dae draaglik maak.

Reg vir uitdagings by AGS Rehobot Ek is Riana van Niekerk, die nuut aangestelde Sondagskool bestuurder by die AGS Réhobot gemeente in Lydenburg. Ek kom oorspronklik vanaf Uitenhage in die Oos-Kaap en het daar skoolgegaan. Nadat ek gematrikuleer het by Hoërskool Die Brandwag, het ek by Pneumatix Ministry and Arts skool in Somerset-West gaan studeer. Na drie jaar se studies en ’n “Gapyear” by Pneumatix in die Kaap, was ek reg om voltyds in die bediening te gaan staan. En dis waar die Here my toe geroep om 1 400 kilometer vanaf my huis te trek en met die kinders van Lydenburg te kom werk. Ons eerste uitdaging as gemeente is om die Think Orange Curriculum en strategie wat vanaf America kom, deel te maak van ons gemeente. Ons nuwe naam vir die Sondagskool is 24/7! Dis gekies omdat ons glo dat Sondagskool net vir’'n uur en ’n half op 'n Sondag plaasvind, maar as ons die lewenslesse en waardes huistoe vat en dit 24ure en 7dae ’n week toepas, sal ons ’n groot verandering in ons kinders begin sien. Die strategie is dat ek en die ouers saam sal te werk

Munisipale Diens A.Pretorius skryf: Plaas asb die volgende brief in u koerant as u dit gepas en nie-lasterlik ag. Waarom aanvaar ons as publiek nog die belaglike diens wat die Munisipaliteit aan ons opdwing. Hulle diens is seker van die swakste wat ek nog in my lewe ervaar het, maar ons aanvaar dit maar met ’n optrek van die skouers. Die kragtoevoer is meer af as wat dit aan is, ons as publiek moet maar kragopwekkers ten duurste aanskaf as ons wil krag he. Die area waar ek woon is ten minste drie keer ’n week sonder water vir ure aanmekaar, totdat iemand dit regkry om dit onder hulle aandag te bring, dan is die antwoord. “oh, the reservoir is empty” is daar nie iemand wat veronderstel is om te kyk dat die pompe loop en die reservoir vol water is nie? Probeer die na-ure nommer van die Munisipaliteit bel, en al wat gebeur is dat die netwerk af is (wat eintlik beteken die skakelbord is afgeskakel) of niemand antwoord die foon nie. Ons strate, en veral ons hoofstraat is so vol gate dat selfs diere hulle bene sal breek as hulle daar moet loop. In die area waar ek woon word daar gereeld beeste deur die strate aangejaag, waarvandaan en waarheen weet nugter. Maar ons as publiek moet betaal vir ’n diens, of dit gelewer word of nie, betaal sal jy betaal. Die vingers, kyke en padwoede op ons paaie is alledaags. Absolute, selfsugtige arrogansie. Malheid. Waansin. Maar ons is almal Christene. Goeie mense. Mense wat uit goeie huise kom. Die ergste van alles is, diep binne wil ons nie so wees nie. Ons wil leef en laat leef. Hoekom is dit so moeilik? Ek dink dit verg net ’n effense (let wel - geringe) kopskuif. Jy besluit self wat jy wil doen en wat se beeld jy wil uitdra. ’n Positiewe gesindheid te midde van die chaos mag moeilik klink, maar dit is eintlik baie maklik. Doen jouself ’n guns en probeer dit. Werk nogal meestal vir my!

“Blue Drop” report on Thaba Cweu THE results of the 2011 “Blue Drop” report on Thaba Cweu (Lydenburg unit) are questionable. According to the report, Lydenburg achieved a Blue Drop score of 59%, as opposed to 47% in 2010. Although some of the criteria items scored include planning, administration and such issues, which elevate the scores, the practical reality of the water situation as witnessed by residents and experts alike, indicate a huge deterioration of the situation. Water leaks occur frequently and the reservoir
close to the museum has been wasting (leaking) clean water for months on end during the 2010 / 2011 evaluation period. Residents complain of being without drinking water in different areas of town on an almost weekly basis. Water leaks from the reticulation system are rife. Furthermore complaints are rife about brown water or water containing flocculants, coming from residents’ taps. During the past 12 months, Lydenburg has seen a devastating slide in terms of sewage management and the pollution of the Dorps River. Since the termination of the contract of
the previous Town Engineer (or Head Technical Services) as it is called, some 10 constant streams of raw sewage enter the river at various localities in and around town, on a on and off basis (see Highlands Panorama News article dated 14 July 2011). Pictures of the situation are brought to the news office on a weekly basis by different residents. The Thaba Chweu Municipality is not only incapable of managing sewage, it is actively destroying the Dorps River, including the lives of all downstream users, with the potential for disasterous consequences. It is only a matter of
time before criminal charges are laid against this Municipality and its officials. It is impossible to afford the Blue Drop Report any credibility, in view of the above facts, yet that report indicates an improvement of 12%. This places a huge question mark behind the entire Blue Drop Program, its staff and how it is implemented. It’s existence seems to be a fruitless expenditure, according to the Public Finance management Act and the credibility of its statistics have now been reduced to the same level as matric results or crime statistics.

Sy is aangewys as '2nd runner up' (of te wel tweede prinses) en het die beoordelaars bekoor met haar skoonheid en persoonlikheid. Giving back to children Gerda Whitehorn Writes: ON 21 June members of the community reached out to give vulnerable children in need donations consisting of food and necessaries. Pupils and teachers from Masodi, Lesodi and Marifaan, all came together to share a fun-filled day with CMR at the NG South Church in Lydenburg. Ten of the most deserving pupils from each school were chosen to each receive a gift basket to take home and share with their families. The pupils' spirits were uplifted with entertaining games and even a demonstration from our local police dog unit. Wildevy was ’n besondere sukses DIE jaarlikse Wildevy 4x4 dag by PLM Boerdery, wat Saterdag 30 Julie plaasgeving het, was baie suksesvol. Hierdie dag word elke jaar aangebied deur ’n klomp entoesiaste vanaf Burgersfort, Steelpoort en Lydenburg. Die fondse wat so gegenereer word is ten bate van etlike verdienstelike organisasie, waarvan in Lydenburg plekke soos Wenakker en andere elke jaar baat vind. Almal wat iemand is, was daar. Dwarsrivier myn met hulle “cowboys & girls”, McGEE & Co met hulle “fear factor”, Macsteel, Pirtek en letterlik honderde ander uitstallers en deelnemers. Die pret op die figuur 8 gladde (modder) baan, die lemoengooi uit die moddergat en die steil op- en afdraendes het elke 4x4 wat deelgeneem het tot die uiterste getoets. Daar was ’n biertent / kroeg wat ’n “slushpuppy” met ’n pietsie in verkoop het, ’n meganiese bul, skoonheidskompetisies en die sêgoed van Willem Montgomery het almal lekker laat glimlag. Daar was brawe manne, mooi meisies en heerlike eetgoed. Dat dit ’n fenomenale pretdag was, is gewis. Dankie vir die uitnodiging om daar te wees en baie geluk aan die organiseerders. Dié dag word elke jaar beter. Voertuie het ingesluit ’n reuse omgeboude Unimog, ’n Nissan Champ 1400 4x4 bakkie, ’n mooi gerestoureerde Willis bakkie, ’n kort wielbasis Cruiser SUV, ’n mikro Hilux bakkie, Landcruisers en ’n menigte Hilux voertuie. ’n Paar het selfs gegrom met V8 enjins. A wind powered car? WOULD you believe me if I told you that an electric car has been created that is faster than a V12 Ferarri? Well, it's no lie - the car is called the Nemesis and has taken 2 years and 1,6 million American dollars to produce. But according to its creator, Dale Vince - CEO of British clean energy company Ecotricity - every penny has been worth it! The Nemesis is certainly no slowpoke - producing 330 brake horsepower means it can rival many gas guzzling sports cars out there. The brake horsepower comes from two 125 kilowatt motors. As for the battery, apparently it charges in 1-2 hours with the energy coming from wind power, a renewable energy source. And the battery can last for anywhere between 100-150 miles (160-240kms). Vince's story is certainly a surprising and inspiring one. Back in 1991 he was unemployed and started waging battles with power suppliers in order to build a wind turbine to power his trailer. But what started on a small scale soon developed into a passion for providing cleaner energy sources and led to the creation of Ecotricity - a UK company which operates wind turbines all over the country, and is now also the world's largest supplier of wind based electricty. Is this the end of the V8? SIX years ago, 29 percent of Americans were driving V8powered vehicles. Now it’s 18 percent. Back then, 43 percent had a six-cylinder engine under the bonnet. Now 37 percent drive sixes. But the telling statistic that Americans are changing driving patterns is this: in 2005, 26 percent drove a four-cylinder car - now 43 percent do.
Four cylinders have replaced sixes as America's most popular engine choice, powering nearly half the light vehicles sold in the US in the first half of 2011. Four-cylinder engines overtook sixes in 2009. The V8 has lost favour even faster. So far this year, more than half the vehicles sold to retail consumers in the United States had four cylinders, up sharply from a third in 2006, says research group JD Power and Associates. Two factors are driving the shift, reports Automotive News. Buyers battling with high fuel prices are downsizing vehicles or opting for the smaller of two engine choices. And carmakers are shrinking vehicles and engines to meet tougher 2016 federal fuel economy rules. Michael Omotoso, JD Power's senior manager of global powertrain forecasting, said the carmaker push and consumer pull were reshaping the American car market. Making engines simultaneously smaller, more powerful and more fuel-efficient cost a bundle, he added, because manufacturers had to combine multiple technologies such as turbocharging, direct injection and variablevalve timing. Carmakers are even preparing to test demand for threecylinder engines. Ford will use a one-litre turbocharged threecylinder engine in the Ford Fiesta in the US and BMW plans to market a three-cylinder in the Mini. Kregg Wiggins, senior vicepresident of Continental's North American powertrain division, expects engine sizes to shrink, with the percentage of engines smaller than two litres doubling over the next six or seven years. In 2017, Continental forecasts, 3.4 million engines installed in North American-built vehicles will have a displacement of less than two litres, up from 1.2 million in 2010. That would mean one in five vehicles would have a two-litre or smaller engine in 2017, up from one in An Authorized 10 in 2010. - The New Zealand Financial Herald Service Provider

JIMS to take place in October TOM Cruise is unlikely to put in an appearance at the Johannesburg International Motor Show in October, but his co-star in the next Mission Impossible movie will be there. BMW is one of many manufacturers pulling out all the stops for the show, which returns to the Expo Centre, Johannesburg from October 6-16 2011. The German marque is promising a true feast for petrol heads and general enthusiasts alike with a host of concepts and South African premieres. Top of the bill will go to the Mission Impossible star, the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics concept vehicle. This stunning concept is the latest in its line of “green” supercars and is due to hit markets around the world in 2013. On July 20th, attorneys Cliffe Decker Hofmeyr formally submitted an objection to the Bill of behalf of the Institute of Estate Agents of South Africa (IEASA), the Estate Agents Holding Company Limited and the Estate Agents Joint Venture KZN. In a nutshell the objection calls for transparency and a thorough overhaul of the Bill through “due process and not merely by a ministerial statement.” Concludes Biehler: “We are already fielding requests by investors to sell their rental property which is an indication of things to come should the Bill be passed. It's high time that Government acted responsibly and considered the economic and social ramifications of property legislation before ploughing ahead willynilly. Samancor ECM wildevy 4x4 Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) was one of the proud sponsors of the Wildevy 4x4 Family Day. ECM sponsored obstacle number two on the 4x4 track, a potjie team (manned by ECM Management) and a paramedic stand in partnership with EMCARE. The medical team was available on site in case any serious incidents would occur and fortunately there were no injuries. The one major factor that they had to deal with was sunburn and luckily the medics were ready for “sunburn victims”! At the obstacle, the ECM team decided to go with a safety theme, seeing that ZERO HARM is one of the core values of ECM. Due to the layout of the obstacle, traffic control was important. Therefore the team also had to ensure the safety of pedestrians. The team set up safe walkways where spectators could watch the excitement without getting trampled. ECM issued all the teams that participated with a pair of gumboots for their co-drivers. This would help them walk around safely when they inspect the routes they needed to travel. At the point, they were also issued with bumper stickers with safety slogans such as “Hang up and drive safely” and “If you can read this, you are too close”. In a mining set up, safety and housekeeping goes hand in hand. As a result, the team laid a floor of slag to help manage the dust factor. To ensure their own safety, the team wore their PPE and bright orange shirts to enhance their
visibility. It was a day to remember. The ECM team, as well as the spectators had lots of fun! All the hard work that was put into it was not in vain. The ECM team walked away with the prize for the best point for 2011! Well done ECM!

J.A. Kruger met hul aankoms op Oliver Tambo op 6 Julie en ’n perskonferensie. 'N Lydenburger, van die Dasha Skool op Nelspruit, is trots op die goue medalje wat hy verwef het by die SA Special Olympics. J.A. Kruger het aan die sokker by hierdie spesiale kompetisie deelgeneem. Dit het vanaf 26 Junie tot 2 Julie plaasgevind by die Hellinikon Olympic Complex Aghios Kosmos Sports Center. Die afgelope naweek se Wildevy 4x4 het weereens groot getalle toeskouers en deelnemers gelok (foto Reinet Bell).
Rooikatte maak amok in Newcastle
DIE afgelope naweek is Chroom Golf Klub se liga span as Mpumalanga se kampioene gekroon toe hulle Volksrust op Witrivier se baan verslaan het! Die span het deur gedring en in die finaal teen Lydenburg Golfklub gewen om die Laeveldkampioene te word op Nelspruit se baan. Hulle het Lydenburg in ’n valbyl stryd geklop. Hulle moes daarna teen die Hoëveld
se span uitspeel om die Mpumalanga kampioenspan te wees. Hulle het weer eens teen ’n baie sterk span van Volksrust met ’n valbyl stryd gewen. Geluk aan hierdie span met hul oorwinning! Op die foto spog hulle met die trofeë en medaljes wat hulle gewen het as Laeveld en Mpumalanga Kampioene. Deur Willem Montgomery.
