8 000 000 Consecutive Fatality Free Man Shifts at Modikwa ALL employees and contractors at Modikwa have over the past 63 months continuously worked with safety as their first and foremost concern, in doing so they have converted their “Passion” into this wonderful achievement, thus ensuring that any person who works at Modikwa can honestly say that they will return home to their families and loved ones at the end of their shift without harm. They follow a fairly simple strategy at Modikwa to drive their safety performance, and it hinges on the three concepts of a Zero Mindset, No Repeats and Simple Standards. Now that they have achieved this their greatest challenge is to work harder to maintain consistent improvement. An achievement of this nature is the result of dedicated leadership, unconditional commitment from the labour organizations and sustained effort on the part of everyone on the mine, and is a justifiable cause for pride and satisfaction. Every employee and contractor deserves the highest praise for their conscious effort to preserve safety in the mine and that of their fellow workers. It is through empathy and teamwork from their Management team and Labour representatives in ensuring the core ideology of Caring for their people, and the full commitment of the employees and contractors to the total compliance safety strategies, coupled to the dedication shown by them towards the elimination of unsafe acts and conditions that has pushed us at Modikwa beyond what is commonly accepted as the unreachable and made this possible, and the vision of Zero injuries achievable. Through the continuation of a zero mindset towards injuries, prevention of reoccurrence of injuries, and compliance to set safety standards and rules, Modikwa will continue to lead the industry in injury prevention and beyond as they reach our next milestone of 9 000 000 Fatality Free Shifts towards the end of March 2012.

Inauguration of the Thaba Chweu Mayor, Councillor Moses Marobela Promises of “winds of change” ON Friday 19 August 2011 the Executive Mayor was inaugurated and there was a brass band entertaining the guests. Mr Andries Lamprecht, Regional Magistrate officiated the swearing in at the inauguration of the new Thaba Chweu Executive Mayor, Moses Marobela. Cllr Marobela said in his speech that there is going to be a new wind of change in Thaba Chweu. All vacant positions will be advertised and candidates that are highly qualified and have all the necessary experience will be appointed. He also said that discipline within the municipality will take priority. He has an open door policy and therefore undertook to be in contact with the community on a regular basis, and he is prepared to listen to their complaints and problems. Messages of support were received from the House of Traditional Leaders and the key note address was done by the Ehlangeni District Municipality's Executive Mayor Cllr L Shongwe. The Mayor is a compassionate person and this was proven by his actions during the fire that took place at Lellievlei. Provinsiale Prokureursvrou van die jaar ’n Lydenburger YVETTE Labuschagne van Van Renen Heyns Prokureurs, is dié week aangewys as Mpumalanga se prokureursvrou van die jaar. Hierdie toekenning word jaarliks gemaak deur die Mpumalanga Prokureurs Raad, waaraan alle prokureurs in dié provinsie verplig word om aan te behoort. Nadat nomminasies deur kollegas ingedien word, stem alle lede vir die persoon wat hulle dink geskik is om hierdie titel met trots te dra. Yvette het in 1994 gematrikuleer aan die Hoërskool Lydenburg en daarna Regte gaan

studier by die Universiteit van Pretoria. In 2001 het sy haar praktyk Van Renen Prokureurs op die dorp oopgemaak en in 2002 in venootskap gegaan om Van Renen Heyns Prokureurs daar te stel. MTPA betaal nie krag nie DIE Mpumalanga Toerisme en Parke Agentskap het steeds nog nie sy skuld aan die Thaba Chweu Munisipaliteit betaal nie. Lydenburg Visserye se krag is weer op 18 Augustus 2011 afgesny. Die Stadsraad het die Visserye se toevoer op 20 Maart en weer op 7 April afgeskakel. Die krag is toe weer op 27 Mei afgeskakel. Die Visserye en inwoners wat op die standplaas woon was toe vir 3 weke lank sonder krag. Inwoners het op eie onkostes gaslampe en kragopwekkers aangekoop. Die Visserye skuld die stadsraad R471 666-50 en vanaf 27 Mei is daar nog geen gelde van hoofkantoor aan die stadsraad oorbetaal nie. Inwoners het by die stadsraad gaan reel dat hulle self hul huishoudelike kragverbruik by die stadsraad vereffen. Inwoners het dit wel gedoen, maar dit maak min verskil aan die agterstallige bedrag. Die huise en die kantoor kompleks is op een kraglyn en die inwoners gaan nou met die stadsraad onderhandel om die kraglyn tussen die huise en kantoor kompleks te verdeel. Soos berig in die Highlands Panorama Nuus van 2 Junie 2011, is daar op die Visserye se trekker beslag gelê toe dit vir onderhoud geneem is, omdat die MTPA, waarvan die Visserye deel is, die maatskappy al vir maande geld skuld. Die trekker staan nog steeds by die maatskappy. Hoof Natuurbewaarder Frik Rousseau wou geen kommentaar lewer nie en het alle navrae verwys na die Hoofkantoor in Nelspruit. ~ Ilse Venter

Government and corruption M . J . M a t e m a n e , P r a k t i s e e r, w r i t e s : We are sick and tired of a government that is always telling us that it is fighting corruption, whereas it is oiling the machines of corruption so that they must run smoothly. The government is busy nurturing the seeds of corruption so that it germinates and bears fruit. If our government is serious about uprooting corruption, it must unequivocabaly do away with the tendering system. This is the breeding ground of corruption. Unscrupulous politicians and civil servants as well as their cronies, siphon money from the state coffers through this system. Nullify the tendering system and the corruption will have been minimised by 90%. Nepotism is another cancer that is eating our community down to the marrow. People are hired because they they are politically c o n n e c t e d . Competent and credible people are left out of the system. Well qualified people are left out during the interviews because they are not politically well connected. The interviews are just a smokescreen. This practice is cancerous.

A fun outing IT must be fun to stay away from work and take a stroll through the streets of Lydenburg. In addition you can behave like a ‘hooligan’ and throw around trash. It must be fun... definitely. Strikers have turned Lydenburg into a rubbish dump and they are enjoying every second of it. Even though other municipal workers returned to work on Monday, local workers just didn’t want to go. Private businesses have cleaned up the streets countless of times just for the strikers to throw around rubbish the next day. With the risk of giving editorial comment, the strikers must enjoy this tremendously. And we wonder if their mothers are proud of them. ~ Michelle Boshoff

Sonja Boshoff van die DA skryf: Dit is vir al die inwoners van Thaba Chweu hartseer om te sien hoe betogers van SAMWU die strate van die verskeie dorpe bemors en onveilig maak vir voetgangers en motoriste. Dit is ongelukkig buite die DA se vermoë om alleen 'n einde aan sulke optredes te maak. Ons wil dus 'n ernstige versoek tot alle inwoners en sakeondernemings rig om hande te vat en saam te staan en sulke ondeurdenkte gedrag die hoof te bied. Die DA betuig sy dank teenoor sakeondernemings asook privaat persone wat na die optogte self ingespring het en voor hulle deur gevee het. Dit gaan nie ongesiens verby nie. Dankie vir u geduld en begrip vir die situasie wat nie net in die DA se hande is nie, maar toe te skryf is aan die regerende party se onvermoë om sulke situasies beter te kan hanteer.

Dink dieper en verder as die norm. Aanvaarbare standaarde maak dat mens in ’n groef vasval waar geen ruimte gelaat word vir oorspronklikheid nie. Oorspronklikheid en inisiatief word gebore in mens se brein. Ja-en-amen maar vir die mensdom, maar in jou gedagtes kan jy sê wat jy wil. Ek hoor graag wat is mense se opinies oor sekere onderwerpe. Want volgens my is daar maar baie mense wat ’n skroef los het, of eerder vaakvisse is. Een opinie of definisie wat ek al gehoor het is dat mense sê dat ‘n huweliksertifikaat eintlik ‘n soort jaglisensie is wat jou tot een bok beperk. As mense met ‘n mond vol tande sit begin hulle oor die weer praat. Of dan nou die finansies. Maar o-weë, niemand weet eintlik iets daarvan nie. Ek ook nie. Ek weet nie eers wanneer my belasting moet inwees nie. En ek stel ook nie belang nie. (Kom ons dwaal gou van die onderwerp af. Die basiese dag en lewensstyl is vir my kru vervelig - ek wil met ‘n kaftan rondloop en in ‘n bos gaan bly.) En dis hoekom iets so banaal soos motorbande en belasting my verveel. Warning A concerned grandmother from Lydenburg writes: To all parents/grandparents with small children / grandchildren shopping at supermarkets. On Sunday my daughter went to the better and better supermarket to buy a few things. At the till, the packer playfully made spraying sounds towards my 3-year old granddaughter (sitting in the trolley) with the bottle they use to clean the till. Then she pulled the trigger and sprayed her in the eyes. She started crying and screaming that her eyes were burning. The packer’s reaction was “I’m sorry, my friend, I didn’t mean to hurt you!” In answer to my daughters question on the contents of the bottle, she was told that it was only water! She told them the contents were green, upon which they said she can wash her eyes with a little bit of milk! Driving back home she phoned me and told me what had happened. I phoned the supermarket, after my 3rd attempt to speak to a manager I told the operator that she better get hold of a manager and he / she must phone me within 15 minutes or I will be coming to the store with the Police. The manager phoned me and I told her what happened (by this time she had a different story, implying my granddaughter grabbed the bottle and wouldn’t let go). I told her to phone me back with the name of the contents of the bottle. When the doctor heard it was MAXISAN, he said they must bring my granddaughter immediately. The doctor rinsed her eyes and told them that Maxisan could damage eyesight, and they have to come back the next day for a follow-up. The manager told me that their staff are well trained. My personal opinion is that’s why they immediately started to make up a story to cover-up the incident. In the meantime we can just pray that no permanent damage was done to my granddaughter’s eyes. Writing this letter I hope to prevent something similar happening to your child / grandchild! In the meantime watch out for yourselves as well. When the floors get washed they do not put out any warning signs for the customers. I almost fell once, but luckily I got hold of a shelf that prevented me from falling.

DIE OUTOPPIE SE KOMMENTAAR

Kerkdebat DIE NG Kerk (en baie ander kerke) worstel met en argumenteer erg oor onder andere groot doop, klein doop, besprinkeling en onderdompeling. Hierdie is maar een aspek waaroor kerke, sektes en sogenaamde uitverkorenes vandag worstel. Ons praat nie eers van die huwelik, tugtiging van kinders, die rolle van man en vrou in die huis en onderdanigheid aan die keiser / koning of regering nie. Enige aspek van die mens se lewe en sosiale interaksie met ander, word deur religieuse groeperings gedebateer en of voorgeskryf. Die meeste hiervan kom uit die interpretasie van Bybelboekskrywers van hulle verwysingsraamwerk in die tyd, hulle geskiedenis, hulle politiek en hulle

tradisies. Natuurlik sou mense sê dat hulle direk aangespreek is deur God, of dat ’n Engel hulle voorgesê het en sodoende is hulle woord as die alfa en die omega as korrek aanvaar. Kerke hou hulleself met hierdie goed besig, terwyl die mensdom daarbuite tans verswelg word deur morele en etiese verval, God se skepping (natuur) wat stelselmatig uitgewis word en derglike tersaaklike en belangriker gebeure. Wanneer ’n klomp senior, gerespekteerde, belese en gekwalifiseerde manne hulle besig hou met ’n argument oor groot doop, dan dien dit as bewys dat die kerk irrelevant geword het. Ek is eenvoudig groot gedoop (in die NG Kerk!) omdat my oorlede pa gesê het ek moet self besluit of ek ’n kind van God wil wees. Dankie Falcon Andre Coetzee skryf: Hier by die koerant word ons elke dag herinner aan swak diens vanaf dié of daardie plaaslike maatskappy. Daar is min komplimente. Ek het onlangs my Isuzu se kragruite en my dogter se Fordjie se ruitveër bedrading en motor by Falcon laat herstel. Elke keer is die werk vinnig, professioneel en korrek gedoen. Bart sal gemis word Fanie du Toit skryf: Ek is 'n oud Lydenburger, so met die gevolg dat baie van die mense mekaar nou nog van skool dae af ken en het basies saam groot geword. 15 Augustus was juis so 'n tragiese dag waar ons een van ons baie goeie vriende verloor het. Buiten vir die feit dat Bart so baie gedoen het vir die gemeenskap was hulle wel bekend in die dorp onder baie mense. Mense soos hy gaan beslis gemis word, want nie net het hy 'n besonderse diens gelewer in die dorp nie, maar hy het om gegee vir die mense van die gemeenskap. Ek praat uit persoonlike ondervinding, en glo my as jy die telefoon opgetel het en hom geskakel het vir hulp, was dit net 'n kwessie van minute en hy was daar, maak nie saak watter tyd nie. So mense as julle nie respek het vir die werk wat hy gedoen het en hom nie geken het nie hou jou mond!! Ja jy met jou khaki baaitjie, hopelik lees jy dié en jy sal weet wie jy is, en al die ander mense wat so skinder en 'n eiertjie wil lê, los dit net ! Bart ou vriend, jy sal beslis gemis word ! Sterkte aan al die familie en vriende.

DIT blyk dat ’n anonieme groep mense Dinsdagaand 16 Augustus en weer Maandagaand 22 Augustus ’n groot deel van die sentrale sakegebied se strate skoongemaak het. Ek het ’n vermoede wie dit was en ek vermoed ook dat die persoon/e nie krediet daarvoor wil hê nie. Van my kant af, ek salueer en bedank jou. Die kerke het as geestelike tuiste van baie mense ’n krities belangrike rol om te speel, maar hulle wil nie, want dit mag onpopulêr wees of nie polities korrek nie, of dit mag vroueregte aantas ens ens. Regte bo alles! Intussen loop die werêld en sy mense reguit in die hel in. Die outoppie dominees behoort te praat oor sake soos misdaad, eerlikheid, morele waardes, geestelike herlewing, etiek, berading van die jeug, drankmisbruik, owerspel, gesinsgeweld en sulke dinge, eerder as oor groot doop. Gesinne moet weer funksioneer en die vader van elke huis moet weer verantwoordelikheid neem vir sy huis. Dan sal julle ysters wees in die gemeenskap en sal kerke weer relevant word en hopelik vol word. Spreek ons probleme aan en hou op tyd mors! Nou het ek hopelik op baie tone getrap. Ek hoop die debat kry in die regte rigting koers.

Panga, koppe en velle dien as bewyse Frik Rousseau, Themba Mzimba en Lukas Shabango

Kleine sneeuman Johan Jordaan met die "klein" Wenakker sneeumannetjie wat hulle gebou het. Al die inwoners is met die Wenakker kombi's aangery om na die sneeu te gaan kyk. Van die inwoners het van die sneeu saamgebring en dit wat nie gesmelt het nie, is gebruik om die sneeuman te bou. Hulle was baie trots daarop. Die hoësorg-inwoners is berg toe geneem, maar toe hulle terugkom wou 'n paar van hulle nie uit die kombi klim nie, want hulle wou nog sneeu sien.

ONWETTIGE jagters gaan beslis vasgevat word noudat die jagseisoen einde se kant toe staan. Twee verdagtes het op Woensdag 18 Augustus in die Lydenburg Hof verskyn nadat hulle betrap is dat hulle onwettig gejag het op die Mabelane's Trust Farm in die Goedvooruitzight omgewing. Geen vrystellingspermitte is uitgereik vir jag op die plaas nie.. Vo l g e n s m n r T h e m b a M z i m b a , ' n natuurbewaarder van die MTPA (Mpumalanga Toeriste en Parke Agentskap) word daar gereeld op die plaas gejag maar kon die sondebokke nie vasgetrek word nie. Die plaas word gehuur deur twee entrepreneurs. Boere in die omgewing het bewus geraak van die onwettige bedrywighede op die plaas en die nodige instansies daarvan ingelig. 'n Koedoe, twee rooibokke en twee bosbokke is geskiet en vir 'n bedrag van R12 000 verkoop . Themba Mzimba en Lukas Shabango was egter

op hulle pos en is die onwettige jagters vasgetrek en gevang. 'n Kettingsaag, twee ander sae, 'n panga, asook die koppe en velle is gekonfiskeer en sal as bewyse dien in die hof. Onwettige jag het toegeneem, veral in die tydperk toe werkers van MTPA gestaak het, maar volgens Frik Rousseau, Hoof Natuurbewaarder, is die staking op 'n einde en natuurbewaarders terug op hulle pos. Geen genade sal getoon word aan enige persoon wat betrokke is by onwettige jag nie. Jagters moet ook verantwoordelik wees en seker maak dat jag- en vrystellingspermitte geldig is vir die plaas of gebied waarop gejag word. Indien jaggewere uitgereik word aan jagters om mee te skiet is dit ook noodsaaklik om seker te maak dat hierdie wapens wettig en gelisensieer is. ~ Ilse Venter

Vlooimark vir 90ste fees Om dit ’n fees vir die hele dorp te maak, het die Feeskomitee besluit om ’n kunsen vlooimark ook aan te bied. Wynproewersgilde kuier met Rijks's Private Collection ’n Baie interresante proe is deur Dr Jakkie Swanepoel op 18 Augustus by die Spur aangebied, waarna die aand afgesluit is met 'n heerlike ete deur Corrie en sy span. Daar is ses wyne van hierdie besondere kelder geproe, naamlik Rijk's Bravado 2003, Iceberg Red 2003, The Crossing 2006, Shiraz 2004, Pinotage 2007 en Pinotage Reserve 2006. Al die wyne het bogemiddeld goeie punte gekry en die Pinotage Reserve is aangewys as die top wyn van die aand. Die plaas, Rijk's Private Cellar, lê in die Tulbaghvallei en behoort aan Neville en Theresa Dorrington. Ontwikkeling op die plaas begin in 1996 waar 14ha wingerd aangeplant is en die volgende 12ha in 1997. Die kelder is

ontwerp deur die bekende Gunter Brozel en is toegerus met klein staal tenks vir al die verskillende kultivars. Die wynmaker is Pierre Wahl. Die eerste wyne is reeds in 2000 vrygestel en daar is besluit om dit by plaaslike kompetisies in te skryf, soos SA Jong Wyne Skou, Veritas, Wine Magazine, Michelangelo en Winemakers Choice. Die eerste wyn wat ingeskryf is was die 2000 Sauvignon Blanc wat dan ook 'n dubbel goud Veritas en 'n goud Michelangelo wen. Sedert 2005 voer hul meer as 50% van hul wyne uit en wen hul drie keer die “Beste wyn van die kompetisie” in die Michelangelo International Awards Competition.

Akhanani and Verlinde France give South African employment a lift THE world’s premier supplier of hoists and lifting equipment, AKHANANI / VERLINDE FRANCE, is pleased to report it’s crane components are set to be employed in South Africa as part of a R130 million training centre for Barloworld Equipment, bringing with it improved education and employment prospects. The components for Jib and EOT (Electrical Overhead Travelling) cranes are being provided by Akhanani Electromechanical Engineering (PTY) Ltd, dealer and supplier of Verlinde France. As part of Barloworlds’s Isando operations in Johannesburg, once complete, the training centre will educate thousands, injecting valuable industry skills into the South African economy. The global economic climate has seen many capital expenditure projects put on hold: but Barloworld chairman, Dumisa Ntsebeza, emphasised this investment was aligned with government policies of growing the economy by nurturing key skills, in tandem with the growth of essential infrastructure making it essential for projects such as this to get the green light. “ The decision to purchase Akhanani cranes and Verlinde France components was taken by Barloworld following a competitive tender process’” said Akhanani managing director Arno Dahms, “This involved evaluation of each bidder’s after-sales service and maintenance capabilities., so we are delighted this process recognized

the quality of our service and products, resulting in the ultimate success of our bid. We have secured another project for Jib and EOT cranes in Zambia too, so the African market is clearly on the rise for Akhanani and Verlinde France.” The new centre’s accommodation module will house 130 trainees in 96 single rooms, with eight bachelor units and eight flexible multi-roomed units. Once operational, the training centre will teach approximately 2000 students each year and Barloworld and other Cat dealers will have access to a six bay workshop, 12 practical working a r e a s , 1 2 l e c t u r e r o o m s , o ff i c e accommodation, a canteen and other amenities. The Barloworld Equipment Operator Academy will also have four dedicated lecture rooms. Together with South Africa, students will also come from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, so the new centre will provide a welcome boost not just for South Africa, but for the economies, hopes and aspirations of people from surrounding nations too. “South Africa is an emerging market for Verlinde France, so we are delighted that Akhanani has been successful in this tender bid,” said Simon Rothechild, business development manager for Akhanani. “A R130 million project of this scale is great news for Johannesburg and we wish Akhanani every success with this project, and their new work in Zambia.”

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines Winterveld Festival & Annual Steelpoort Mining Show LAST year Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines held their first Winterveld Festival. MTE and Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines would like to announce that this year they decided to partner by presenting the Annual Steelpoort Mining and Technical Exhibition and the Winterveld Festival on two consecutive days at the Winterveld Recreational Club (Rugby Grounds) in Steelpoort. The Mining Exhibition will take place on Friday 2 September, starting at 13h00. MTE is the well known South African travelling Mining exhibition company. Afriforum-tak gestig ECM part of the Go-Cart ’N Splinternuwe tak van Afriforum is verlede Dinsdagaand op Lydenburg gestig. Afriforum is ’n Burgerregte Organisasie wat daadwerklik optree om die regte van gewone landsburgers uit te bou. Hulle tree nie op vir indiwidue nie, maar tree op in tak of groepsverband en help met regsadvies en optrede teen gebrekkige dienslewering, die bewaring van die omgewing en alle regte wat in die grondwet verskans is. Soos groepe na die tweede vryheidsoorlog en die groot depressie van die twintigs georganiseer en strukture geskep het om hulleself te help, so help Afriforum met die skep van strukture en organisering om gewone mense te beskerm en op te hef. Die organisasie is nie net beperk tot Afrikaanssprekendes nie en Engelssprekendes is baie welkom. ’n Sterk bestuur is Dinsdagaand geskep, nadat hulle deur mnr. Cornelius Jansen Van Rensburg toegespreek is. Afriforum is deel van die Solidariteit en Helpende Hand groep en kry op nasionale vlak reeds baie gedoen vir sy lede. at Burgersfort Primary SAMANCOR Eastern Chrome Mines believes that our children are the future. Davida van der Walt, Communication Specialist at ECM says that investment in schools and nurturing of children is high on ECM's priority list. On the 5th of August Burgersfort Primary School hosted a fun go-cart day for all their pupils which formed part of a fund raiser for the school. Whity Ludick, who is a member of the School Governing Body, approached ECM to sponsor Go-Carts for the day. ECM took this request to heart and supplied the school with two go-carts and a pit crew. The children had a blast and the ECM pit crew luckily only had to repair one buckled tire. Due to all the physical activity involved, avoidably empty cold drink cans ended up on the school field. ECM place a lot of value on keeping the environment clean and came up with a creative solution. The ECM team took along foam caps and motivated the kids to clean up the field in return for caps. The kids gladly cleaned up and were very happy to receive their caps., ECM would like to extend a word of thanks to all the volunteers who participated, and to Corne Muller from Lumcor and Kobus Coetzee from MRE who supported ECM with the transport of the gocarts.

AUGUST 06, 2011 was yet another fabulous day for women working at Modikwa Platinum Mine, as they took part in commemorating Women's Day. Though celebrated earlier, the spirit of this special day was seen in the beautiful traditional garments which was the theme for this year's dress code. Women showed up looking absolutely beautiful as they recognize the heroism of the women who came together in 1956 to protest against the then Pass Laws that prohibited freedom of movement. It is in honor of the accomplishment that resulted from that day (August the 9th 1956), that Modikwa Platinum Mine Management supported the women from all business units

including contractors on site in celebration and commemoration of this special day. Modikwa Business Leader, Mr Mandla Nxumalo encouraged women to take up the challenge of filling technical positions, which were previously dominated by men. He added that these positions have now been made available and reserved for women, although the response from women has been very low and disappointing. Open Day at ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine

ON Saturday 13 August 2011, an Open day was held at ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine. All the families got the chance to know each other. The day started off with a warm welcome by Mr. Leon Erasmus, their Works Manager, and Mr. Kleinjan du Toit, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer Operations, explaining how important safety precautions are. A video introducing the history and understanding of the company and operations was shown, after every one was lectured on general safety precautions. Mr. du Toit said that it's important that their families were introduced and involved in the understanding of the work that's being done at ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine.

After the welcoming, personal protective equipment was handed out to everyone, who participated in the plant visit. The visit to the smelter enabled them to understand and experience the hard and dedicated work been done by operations. The visitors were divided into smaller groups which made the tour through the different operations, and different plants, for a more hands on experience. The groups then visited the furnaces, smelter control room, pelletising and sintering plant and the MRP plant. They would like to thank each and every one who helped with the organizing, and in particular the families who came to join the open day with them.

ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine Employee Running for Gold! Congratulations to Tsietsie Paka who achieved two beautiful trophies! Tsietsie is working at Dilokong Chrome m i n e a s a Timberman. Taking part in the 42 km Fastest Marathon that was held in Soweto, he finished with a time of 2 hours and 42 minutes, with two knee injuries from the Longtom Marathon in 2009, which he completed with a 9th position. He completed the Comrades Marathon with a time of 6 hours, 52 minutes and 16 seconds. Tsietsie started running in 1999 and feels very passionate, motivated and determined about his sport. He is currently preparing for the Soweto Marathon for 6 November. The Management Team and all the employees of ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine wish him and all the other runners the best of luck.

Om hierdie projek 'n aaneenlopende sukses te maak benodig ons egter borgskappe vir minderbevoorregte studente wat nie finansieël in staat is om die koste uit hul eie sakke by te dra nie. Hierdie studente is jong mense wat as gevolg van omstandighede buite hul

beheer nie werk kan kry nie as gevolg van die feit dat hul oor geen kwalifikasies beskik nie. Gesien in die lig dat die tegnologie in dié tyd die mens vooruit loop is dit noodsaaklik dat studente die basiese begrip van rekenaarvaardigheid bemeester. Hierdie kursus strek oor 'n tydperk van vier weke. Dié kursus stel hierdie studente in staat om te gaan aansoek doen vir werk. Friday 19th August 2011 Entheos Students and Staff wore Slippers and Pyjamas to school in Aid of Slipper Day for Reach for a Dream Foundation. Each child and Staff member purchased a sticker for R10 and wore slippers and / or pyjamas to school for the day. The proceeds all went to Reach for a Dream Foundation. Nissan Tiida goeie koop LONGTOM NISSAN het ’n beperkte aantal Nissan Tiida demo modelle beskikbaar teen baie spesiale pryse. Om my geheue te verfris, het ek gaan kyk en weer bietjie met die motor gaan ry. Die Tiida is groot en ruim binne. Die modelle beskikbaar is almal die 1.6 Visia Plus en is in twee bakvorms beskikbaar, naamlik luikrug (hatch) en sedan, met ’n “boot”. Vir my is die sedan die mooiste en die bagasiebak is baie groot. Die besonder sterk 1.6 maak 80kW en 153Nm se wringkrag en met die vyfspoed handratkaste trek die motor baie goed. Dubbel lugsakke, ABS, EBS, BAS, immobiliseerder, kragvensters, lugversorging, radio / CD, microdot sekuriteit, kragstuur, en sentrale sluit, kom alles as standaard. Op die pad is die Tiida lekker stil, die remme is goed en alle kontroles werk glad en goed. Ek het min kritiek. Die eerste rat sing ’n bietjie, wat tipies is aan reguit gesnyde ratte (’n tegniese aspek wat sterker komponente verseker), maar vanaf tweede is die meganiek stil. Teen die pryse wat Lontom Nissan vir hierdie lae kilometer demonstrasiemodelle met volle waarborg en diensplan aanbied, verteenwoordig hierdie motors uitstekende waarde vir geld. Die Tiida is ruim, gerieflik en baie betroubaar. Tiida eienaars rapporteer deurgaans goeie gehalte en probleemvrye motorplesier. Ons toets die nuwe Hyundai Elantra ONTHOU julle die vorige Elantra? Hierdie nuwe model maak ’n sprong 10 jaar die toekoms in. Ons het die 1.6 GLS met sesspoed handratkas getoets. Wat ’n motor. Dit is ’n pragstuk. Dit lyk soos ’n koepee, maar die Elantra is ’n vierdeur sedan met hope ruimte en ’n reuse bagasiebak. Ek is verlief. Die nuwe Elantra is toegerus met dubbelsone lugversorging, stuur wat op en af en in en uit kan verstel, dubbel lugsakke, radio / CD met AUX en iPod, afstand sentrale sluit, misligte, reënsensors, buite temperatuur aanduiding, ritrekenaar met brandstofverbruik en verskeie ander funksies, kragstuur met sattelietkontroles, ses luidsprekers (4+2), plek vir jou petrolkaart in die sonskerm, elektriese vensters en spieëls, en sonbril houer. Die paneelkissie is in kompartemente verdeel en is baie groot. Daar is hope beenruimte voor en agter. Op die pad maak die dubbelnok 16-klep enjin 96 kW krag (onthou ons praat van ’n 1600, sonder turbo en derglike aanjaging en 157 Nm wringkrag en jy kan dit voel). Die motor trek soos ’n trein! Kontroles is lig en akkuraat en die sesspoed kas ’n droom. Teen 120 km/u toer die enjin net oor die 3 000 opm en teen 140 km/u net oor die 4 000 opm. Die rooilyn lê wyd op 6 500 opm. Geraamde topspoed is ’n maklike 200 km/u. Die 48 liter brandstoftenk is groot vir hierdie klas en behoort in sesde maklik ’n reikafstand van 600 km op die oop pad te gee. Hantering op die pad is baie goed met uitstekende remme, stabiliteit en padvastheid. Die veerstelsel en rit is stil. Ek is werklik beïndruk. Teen ’n hoë spoed is die stuur bietjie lig, maar ek skryf dit toe aan ons swak paaie. Op ’n snelweg sal dit nie pla nie. Twee ander (duurder) 1.8 modelle is ook beskikbaar, maar die 1.6 GLS trek so goed en is so toegerus dat hierdie ’n skittermotor is, veral teen die prys van R 186 900. Die waarborg is 150 000 km of 5 jaar en die diensplan 5 jaar en 90 000 km. Die Elantra is in agt besondere kleure beskikbaar. Andre Coetzee.

Toyota FJ Cruiser NO longer can we mumble about boring shapes, interiors and a lack of excitement from Toyota. Why? The reason is the FJ Cruiser, which forms part of the famous Land Cruiser family. Now finally available in right-hand-drive form, this cruiser in the real sense of the term has emerged from the dreadful catastrophes in Japan and reached our shores. So what is all the fuss about? It’s all about the looks. That retro front-end treatment shouts, "Look at me – I haven’t changed. I was cool in the 1960s and ‘70s and still am.” Close-set round headlights and a plain grille look just fine and notice that this is the only Toyota that doesn’t have the carmaker's emblem on its grille. Instead, the name is in bold. The emblem still adorns the leather-covered steering-wheel boss, though. The rear also has that retro-modern touch with a side-opening hinged door with mounted spare wheel. Roofs are all white, just as they were on the FJ40 of the 1960s. But it’s the side view that shows the FJ Cruiser at its best. Only two doors are initially apparent. This is not so, as a pair of “suicide” rear-opening doors allow better access for the rear seat passengers. Note that the FJ has seating for five with a large luggage area aft. The interior goes right along with the theme. Body-coloured sections are featured, a slab-like facia with symmetrically laid out controls, oversized air-con and vent knobs, and an upright, low-slung windscreen that needs three wiper blades to cover most of the swept area. The sound system sounded good and incorporates a speaker built into the roof lining. Instruments are not your usual Japanese style and everything looks like a blend of American and British influence mixed-in with the Japanese base – perhaps again harking to the roots of the entire Japanese auto industry. The steering wheel has little rake adjustment and no reach but the driver’s seat has height and tilt adjustment and foot space is good. Rear legroom is adequate but not outstanding. Seating is moisture-repellent cloth that is washable. While the small rear-side windows look as if they will not allow rear passenger visibility, it wasn’t too bad, although, with the limited glass area, this isn’t the best game-viewing vehicle. So what makes the FJ go? Keeping it nice and simple is a four-litre V6 pushing 200 kW at 5 600 r/min and 380 N.m of torque at 4 400 r/min. Intelligent valve timing is fitted to both inlet and exhaust valves. The engine feeds into a five-speed automatic transmission. For the rough stuff, a separate gearlever moves from 2H to 4H to 4L and a switch adds a rear diff lock. You also have a special off-road traction control available with another switch that includes limited slip for the front diff. The tyres also fit the bill with 265/70R17 Dunlop GrandTrek AT22 rubber providing the necessary grip. To show that the FJ is much more than a curb-crawler, we negotiated a superb 4x4 course strewn with loose rocks. The traction control did a perfect job in keeping a slow and steady pace with the 245 mm ground clearance proving just enough for the bigger rocks that could not be avoided. On the tar, we were in for a much smoother surprise than expected. The suspension (double wishbone at front and four-link with lateral rods at rear) soaks up bumps and potholes with ease. Although body roll and some diving under braking is present, the absorption is excellent and on top of that is a high level of insulation from road, wind and mechanical noise. Steering is light enough (not too light, though) and positive with its hydraulic power assistance. With this drivetrain, fuel consumption is not going to be outstanding – the official figure is 11,4 l/100 km. Six airbags and Isofix mounting points are standard or both versions: The FJ Cruiser at R435 500 and the FJ Sport Cruiser at R457 300. The Sport model has black paintwork, leather seating and some chrome bling including on the door handles, mirrors and grille plus scuff plates. A customised edition Desert Cruiser is presently on offer on sandstorm colour with a nudge bar, spot lamps, tow bar, all weather carpets and rock rails for R450 4 0 0 . Another special version is the FJ Trail Cruiser in metallic grey with roof racks plus integrated spot lamps, tow bar, all weather carpets and a black spare wheel cover for R451 700. LYDENBURG - World Rabies Day 28 September 2011. “The Rabies virus is mainly transmitted by the bite of an infected animal. Animals infected by the virus are characterised by behaviourial changes, abnormal salivation, aggression, abnormal vocalisation, progressive paralysis and inevitably death. Rabies is fatal for man and animal,” explains Dr. Marietjie Malan State Vet from Directorate Veterinary Services. “However the disease can only be confirmed by submitting a brain sample from infectious or suspicious animal. In South-Africa not all human death are reported, because the disease is often associated with witchcraft. Rabies is responsible for laboratory deaths of between 10 and 40 people each year. Most victims are children under the age of 10 years,” says Dr. Malan. “During the past seven months in Mobela Municipality alone, 25 animals have been confirmed positive with rabies. Rabies is encroaching on the Thaba Chweu municipal area at an alarming rate from the North (Limpopo) and from the East and South (Nkomazi and Swaziland),” says Dr. Malan. Pet owners are compelled by law to ensure that their dogs and cats are vaccinated at three months of age against rabies. The vaccination should be repeated within 12 months and then every three years. In high risk areas animals should be vaccinated annually,” advises Dr. Malan. Thaba Chweu’s Rabies week will entail information dissemination and vaccination of pets free of charge on: • 12 - 13 September 2011 at Graskop Municipality. • 14 - 16 September 2011 at Sabie. • 19 - 23 September 2011 at State Vet Offices (Old Kommando Building). • 26 - 30 September 2011 at Mashishing, Kellysville, Skhila and Stasie. Laerskool Landsdiens: Links: Natasha Vermeulen, NJ Nel en Johan Botha is tydens die Landsdiens se streekkamp, wat gedurende die Julie vakansie naby Cullinan gehou is, gekies vir die Landsdiens se Nasionale kamp. Ongeveer 250 leerders van Mpumalanga het hierdie kamp bygewoon en net 32 met 10 reserwes is gekies vir die Nasionale kamp, vir al die provinsies. Hierdie kamp vind ook vanaf 2 tot 6 Oktober plaas by Port Nartal in KwaZulu-Natal.

NA afloop van die SA Nasionale Ringbal kampioenskap wat in Pretoria gehou was, het hierdie Lydenburg spelers die volgende prestasies behaal Drienie Nel – SA Senior Dames keurder Ester Oosthuizen – SA Uitnodigingspan Meester Dames Elize Mulder – SA Veterane Dames Lenie Nel – SA Veterane Dames Die Ringbal seisoen eindig einde Augustus. Mashishing Marathon on 24 Sept THE Mashishing Marathon has changed their race day to 24 September, National Heritage Day. Runners can sign up at the Mashishing Community Hall from 14:00 to 19:00 on 23 September and from 04:00 on 24 September. The Mashishing Marathon Club is very excited about this race as they are starting to find their feet and want to host something for the whole community to take part in. This will be a day of fun for the whole family, please support the runners and club.
