I
n een van die ergste ongelukke in die Lydenburg-distrik in jare, is 11 mense Maandagoggend dood.
Volgens die Departement van Verkeer het die ongeluk omstreeks 06:00 plaasgevind op die Lydenburg-Roossenekal pad. Die twee bakkies was in ’n kop-aan-kop botsing. Die Izuzu-bakkie was onderweg van Lydenburg en agt mense is daarin dood. Een van die passasiers is na die Midmed Hospitaal in Middelburg geneem. Die uitsny van oorledendes is behartig deur Longtom en Abba Towing en N3 Fire, Thaba Chweu Nooddienste en ander noodwerkers het ook saam met ander nooddienste ’n groot bydrae tot redding op die toneel gelewer. Met die ter perse gaan van die Highlands Panorama Nuus is die begrafnisreëlings nog nie bekend gemaak nie en is die name van die oorledendes nog nie uitgereik nie.

Addressing journalists in Pretoria on Wednesday, StatisticianGeneral Pali Lehohla said the posters would be put up on street poles in the areas where the enumerators were to be deployed. Stats SA enumerators will wear yellow bibs during the census, will be people familiar with their area of responsibility, and will carry letters signed by the Statistician-General, as well as special identity cards with photos and identification numbers. If people are in doubt about the legitimacy of an enumerator, they can call the toll-free number 0800 110 248 in order to verify them. Lehohla warned that those who restrict statisticians from doing their work will face a six-month jail term or a R10 000 fine or both. According to Lehohla, 156 000 unemployed people will assist with the census. About 120 000 people will be involved in counting. Lehohla said that although challenges lay ahead, he was confident that the census would be carried out without major hindrances. "I'm confident about the census. This will be better than the 2001 Census," he said, adding that Statistics South Africa was about to conclude the training of enumerators. Kittens left to die in box Michelle Boshoff
A
disturbing case of animal cruelty was averted last week when children found a box full of the kittens. The box was left in the dry river bed, near Buhrmann Street, Lydenburg, in the bush. The sons of Mrs Clare Smith and a friend of theirs, were playing at the bottom of their yard when they heard kittens crying. Their dogs also alerted them to the box. Upon closer investigation they found a typing paper box, with two bricks and seven kittens in it. They were too late to save three of the kittens. They immediately took them to the Lydenburg Animal Consulting Rooms. They would like to thank Dr Frances Solomon, who helped them after hours to examine the kittens. Luckily the surviving kittens were in good health. The boys immediately alerted their friends that four kittens were up for adoption. Thank you to the adopting parents who were prepared to give the kittens a good home, Wendy van der Westhuizen, Christina van Eck and a friend Gerra.

They shook hands with the 27 fire fighters who marched through Lydenburg. The team also helped a spectator change a tire at the Rusoord Entrance.

Cabinet ministers' splurge

is iets wat almal behoort te hê. Daarom word dit beskou as baie algemeen. Tog wil dit voorkom of die algemeenheid daarvan verskil van persoon tot persoon. Seker omdat elke mens verskillende belangstellings het. Algemene kennis. Dis die antwoord op bogenoemde relaas. Maar ek wonder nou eintlik… wat is eintlik algemeen? Ek het oor hierdie punt begin wonder nadat iemand my gevra het of daar 'meer as een regering in Suid-Afrika is?' Die antwoord: 'Ja natuurlik. 'n Nasionale-, provinsiale- en plaaslike regering. Dis mos algemene kennis.' Die persoon was ongelukkig oor die opmerking, wat gelyk het of ek dink sy's dom. Daarom het ek gewonder, is Suid-Afrika se politieke struktuur werklik algemene kennis? Want as die persoon glad nie daarin belangstel nie, sal dit mos nie algemeen wees nie. In 'n gesprek verwys ek die ander dag na die Nasionale Ordes wat deur die president toegeken is by die Uniegeboue. 'Wat is die Unie-gebou?,' word ek afgevra. Ek sluk eers na asem voordat ek amper hooghartig antwoord: "Dis die uitvoerende regeringsetel van SuidAfrika en die president se kantore is daar. O ja, antwoord ek uit die vuis: die argitek was sir Herbert Baker.' Ek voel toe dadelik sleg… soos 'n regte wysneus. Met dié besef ek toe dat inligting wat vir my dalk algemeen is nie dieselfde vir haar is nie. Op 10 of 11-jarige ouderdom het ek al gehoor ek't 'n goeie algemene kennis. Al dink ek die kinders het eintlik bedoel 'n wysneus en nie eers mooi geweet wat is algemene kennis nie. Tog 'n mooi woord nê. Tans wens ek my enigste algemene kennis is hoeveel dae daar oor is tot die Desembervakansie. Net mooi twee maande. Dis agt weke te lank. En dan algemene kennis hoeveel vakansiedae daar gaan wees. Dan maak dit nie saak wat by die regering en Unie-gebou aangaan nie.

Lydenburg ONS pas afgelope toer deur die grootste deel van die land, het ons laat besin oor aftreedorpe, regering, infrastruktuur en ons het deurgaans vergelykings getref met Lydenburg. Eerstens die toestand van ons strate en rommel in die dorp. Die swak toestand van ons strate word slegs oortref deur die totale verval in dorpies soos Vrede en Warden. Dit is duidelik dat die ANC se plan vir die nuwe Suid Afrika dieselfde is as van ouds. Vrot lokasies. Die lokasie sluit nou net die hele dorp in baie gevalle in. Hulle het op verskeie plekke glad nie meer ’n belastingbasis nie (Kaders hoef mos vir niks te betaal nie). Plekke soos Smithfield bestaan nog net op ’n (ou) kaart. Aberdeen het bykans geen
There are a number of happenings that are associated with our cabinet ministers, nationally, that are worrisome, and at the same time dent the image of our government, the ruling party in particular. We know that the image of the ruling party is, as a result of power-mongering and the inclination to amass wealth through a fraudulent tendering system, on the wane. Their careless and extravagant deeds cause a rising tide of criticism. It is alleged that Maite NkwanaMashabane, deliberately missed her plane in Norway, by refusing to have her handbag x-rayed at the airport security. She then hired a chartered flight for which she splurged R235 000 of our taxes. Is she going to pay this back? No. It is alleged that Minister Shiceka blew R370 000 of our taxes on a trip to Switzerland to visit his jailed drug-peddling girlfriend. In addition to that it is also alleged that he squandered another R280 000 for a short stay at an exclusive hotel in Cape Town. Minister Mahlangu-Nkabinde, it is alleged, approved the purchase of 17 new ministerial homes for Zuma's expanded cabinet, at the cost of R183m. Worrying allegations say that one department, headed by Roy Padayachie, has queer expenditures, as revealed by
the auditor-general. It is alleged that R11 000 was spent on payments for manicures and pedicures. Does this department hold beauty contests? These have to do with the beautification of the nails and the feet. Ridiculous! As if that was not enough, it is alleged that the same department splashed R1.2m on a car rental bill. Preposterous, to say the least. Presidents Zuma's salary has now sky-rocketed to R2.48m per annum. On the other hand, he hired a jet to ferry him and his entourage, including his two wives, to the UN. This is an insult to the taxpayers. Former president Mbeki would not allow these. He was frugal. People such as those referred to above, excluding Mbeki, would definitely vote in support of the Protection of Information Bill, so that their crookish deeds must remain hidden under a carpet. Springbok het ons ook verras, met ’n vars en woelige atmosfeer. Op Augrabies het hulle so ’n geweldige muggie probleem dat hulle kopnette verkoop waarmee jy jou gesig toemaak. Dit blyk vanaf inwoners dat die ANC regering hier ’n miljoen rand se chemikalië teen die verkeerde sterkte aangemaak en vrugteloos uitgespuit het. In die Weskaap was alle paaie in ’n goeie toestand en daar was geen rommel te bespeur nie. Duidelik is iemand anders hier aan die stuur van sake. Daar is stilhouplekke met asblikke, sitplek en
selfs dakkies vir koelte langs die paaie. In Mpumalanga sal dié goed gesteel word voordat dit opgerig is. Wat winkelsentrums en fasiliteite betref, is ons gelukkig in Lydenburg. Baie dorpe van soortgelyke grootte het niks meer as ’n algemene handelaar, waar jy van ’n vetkoek tot ’n geelslang kan koop. Min gastehuise het kredietkaart fasiliteite, wat lastig was, want jy moet met kontant rondloop. Meeste petrolstasies was baie swak of baie basies. Petroljoggies behoort landwyd opgelei te word om nie naby motorfiets windskerms te kom om dit te was nie. Die akriel krap maklik. Wat vragmotors betref is Lydenburg oortref deur die stuk pad tussen Sishen (Kathu) en Vryburg. Daar is letterlik duisende vragmotors op dié pad. Nee wat, as jy weer dink Lydenburg is sommer net ’n simpel dorp, gaan toer en jy sal gou besef ons bly in ’n baie aangename plek.

’n Groep geskiedenis-entoesiaste het die afgelope naweek Lydenburg en die omgewing besoek. Hulle is die Pretoria-tak van die Vriende van die Oorlogsmuseum in Bloemfontein. Plaaslike historici soos mnr. Hans Meyer het hulle die omgewing gewys. Hulle het ook baie belang gestel in Verraaiersnek, tussen Lydenburg en Pelgrimsrus, waaroor Christo Swart onlangs ’n boek geskryf het. Die tak was baie ingenome met al die besienswaardighede wat Lydenburg bied. Hulle het ook die area besoek van die Slag van Wilmansrust en die Slag van Helvicia naby Machadodorp. Hulle het al langs die roete gekuier waarop Genl. Botha opgetrek het en teruggeval het teen Genl. Bullen in die Boere-Oorlog.

Western Cape traffic to become New Chev bakkie to replace a nightmare for next two years current Chev / Corsa WESTERN Cape motorists should prepare themselves for major disruptions during the next few years, as massive wind turbine components are transported by road from harbours to windgenerating sites, many of them along the West Coast. Preparation work on the roads will include the “significant” restructuring of some intersections, along with the temporary removal of signage and fencing to accommodate the extremely long and heavy loads, the Windaba 2011 wind energy conference at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, heard on Thursday. Engineer Sisa James of the GreenCape Initiative, a non-profit, co-operative venture to promote sustainable development in the province, said that about 1 850 megawatts of wind energy were expected to be procured by 2015, during the first round of the government’s programme to buy renewable energy from independent power producers. Bids from these producers must be submitted by November 4, with the preferred bidders scheduled to be announced three weeks later. The first turbines are expected to be operational by June 2014. James said they had estimated that generating this amount of power would require about 925 wind turbines, which translated logistically into 6 475 “abnormal loads” over a two-year period, or about 13 abnormal loads every day. “They will be constantly on our roads for the next two years,” he predicted. Although some wind energy projects would be built in the Eastern and Northern Cape, most would be in the Western Cape, along the West Coast. Many people asked why the giant wind turbine components could not be transported by rail, but James said that would require “significant” investment in new equipment and infrastructure. “The honest answer is that we’ve spoken quite a lot to Transnet and they still don’t have the picture.” He explained that the abnormal loads would include the three 45m blades per turbine, which would create a significant length problem for hauliers. The 3.5m x 28m towers would create a height problem for passing under bridges, as would the 3.5m hubs which would be a “very bulky” load. The 80-tonne nacelles - the aerodynamic structures on top of the towers that contain the gearbox, low- and high-speed shafts, generator, controller and brake - would create both weight and length problems. “They have to distribute that weight over many axles, and that can cause a vehicle to be quite long,” James said. Primary issues for the transport of the wind turbines were route clearances, including intersections where turns were required; the shortage of cranes, both to offload vessels bringing the components from overseas manufacturers and to erect the turbines at the site; the maintenance of and possible damage to gravel roads; and moving components between individual turbine plots on site. GreenCape had managed to convince the Saldanha Bay port authority to make cranes available and had offered to lease an overall staging area in which hauliers could in turn lease smaller areas as required, James said. They had calculated that about 112 dedicated traffic escorts would be required to accompany the abnormal loads and the Western Cape transport department was considering appointing private escorts. “There is a very significant safety factor that they emphasise very strongly.” The province had set up a wind turbine transport co-ordinating committee to deal with issues such as shipment scheduling, a joint staging area and route and road clearances, otherwise there could be “very, very big problems”, James warned. “Communication is key, and it will be especially important after the preferred bidders are announced.” John Yeld - Cape Argus

GMSA has set itself a production goal of 50 000 vehicles a year across three platforms from its Port Elizabeth plant. This goal is in line with meeting the requirements of the government’s Automotive P r o d u c t i o n Development Programme which will come into effect in 2013. The seven-seater XUV500 and the recently-launched Genio one-ton bakkie range will be the main attractions on the Mahindra stand at the Johannesburg International Motor Show from October 6-16. Mahindra styling mavens have likened the five-double-oh to an African cheetah, its body styling line "inspired by a pouncing cheetah" with a "cheetah-inspired jaw-like grille" and vertical "paw-styled door handles", as well as the "physics-defying agility of a cheetah". Makes us at IOL want to say, "Meeow!" The XUV500 will be available in two and four-wheel drive format, each with a transversely-mounted, four-cylinder, 2.2-litre turbodiesel for which Mahindra quotes 103kW at 3750rpm and 330Nm from 1600-2800rpm. Transmission is a six-speed manual, with a low-range transfer box for the all-wheel drive version. The all-wheel drive system on the W8 4x4 model has an interactive torque management system that switches seamlessly from two to four-wheel drive. The XUV500 is built on a unique platform independent suspension all round to limit body roll and power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. It has disc brakes front and rear with ABS, EBD and emergency brake assist, and runs on 17" rims (steel on the entry-level W6 model, alloy on the upmarket W8) shod with 235/65 radials. Driver aids include automatic hill descent and hill hold, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, light-sensing headlamps and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. Electronic stability control is standard, as are swivelling, projector-type xenon headlights, tyre pressure monitors and front foglights. W8 models have two-tone leather upholstery, while the W6 model has hard-wearing cloth trim; both trim levels include dual-zone auto aircon, power windows and remote central locking. The sound system is based around a six-speaker FM radio/CD player, with satellite controls on the steering wheels and voice-command capability. W8 models also have a CD shuttle, controlled from a centrally-mounted 150mm touch screen with a navigation system as well as MP3, USB, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity. WITH the revised Fortuner, the engines and transmissions remain the same as on the previous range, but the styling outside and in has been tweaked. Added features above the new entry-level 2,5 D-4D include climate control, leather seating, privacy glass at the rear, a reversing camera, a touch-screen centre display screen, auto-leveling high intensity headlamps, auto lights-on sensor and cruise control. These top-of-therange models also have leather / wood-finish steering wheels and other wood-effect touches. Another improvement across the range is a darker colour upper facia to reduce sun reflection. All models now also have an under-body streamlining plate to improve aerodynamics. We drove the V6 on the local launch in Zambia and the extra power was useful for overtaking speeding trucks which were supposed to be sticking to 80 km/h. The five-speed automatic gearbox has intelligent electronics but we still found that some hunting would occur when overtaking. On a long, mountainous back road with a lot of hanging dust and sudden dips, the suspension of the Fortuner once more showed its comfort and compliance. Braking seemed up to the job and had to be tested now and then to save some goats (and the 17-inch wheels) from pothole damage. The interior remained dust- and rattle-free, and refined. Road noise on the tar sections from the Bridgestone Duelers was minimal. With a permanent four-wheel-drive setup, we only had to lock the center diff for one steep section to stick to a 50:50 front-rear torque split and did not need to engage low range with the 4,0-litre petrol and auto ‘box. TEST-DRIVE A KIA AND WIN A TRIP Motorcycle safety TO THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN extremely important IN MELBOURNE. EACH year the Wheels Motorcycle Safety Campaign gets underway in Cape Town just as the spring south-easter blows the cobwebs out of our riding gear and gets us back on the road after the winter rains. And each year it provides a few surprises. Such as the big new BMW sports-tourer that started leaking brake fluid during the braking exercises at Killarney racetrack on Sunday - less than 36 hours after a major service. If ever there was an object lesson in expecting the unexpected, that was it. But it all started the previous weekend at the Gene Louw provincial traffic college in Brackenfell with a spine-chilling look at what can go wrong - and all too often does - when bikers with no more protection than the gear they are wearing, have to share the roads with large metal boxes on wheels. The South African Paramedic Services' first-aid presentation focused more on what not to do if your riding buddy goes down: move the victim as little as possible, keep airways open and apply pressure on open wounds to stop bleeding. While few bikers have the time to do a proper inspection first thing in the morning, the technical presentation showed that it takes no more than a moment to walk around your bike and see that nothing is dripping and that there is air at the bottom of the tyres (when all the air is at the top, Cyril, you have a problem). Oh, and that macho habit of grabbing a handful of brakes as you swing a leg over the saddle not only stops the bike from rolling forward and crashing down in your driveway before you've even started the engine, it also confirms that the brakes are actually working. Then the participants moved outside to the training area where a number of riding exercises had been set up, mostly based on real-world scenarios, such as an emergency lane change (some idiot in a car pulls out in front of you) or turning into a bend that tightens as you go in, or even steering between cars in traffic, which is not illegal but does demand a special set of precision-riding skills. New this year, over in a corner, was a group of teenage rookies on scooters and 125s, being taken through the K53 requirements by an experienced instructor. Most law-enforcement officers will acknowledge that the K53 is only the first step in learning to ride safety, but there are a lot of safety tips worth learning buried in the officialspeak. The following Sunday the main group - nearly 60 of them - gathered at Killarney to take their riding to the next level, with high-speed braking and cornering exercises. When chief instructor Tony Sparg had them stop from 80km/h using only the rear brake and then check out the resulting stopping distance there were some raised eyebrows. Even using both brakes some participants got flustered and sailed way past the orange cones before hauling their bikes down, prompting a remark from a watching rider that “if he'd done that on the street he'd have T-boned something”. After lunch the circuit was opened for the participants to put all they'd learned into smooth, accurate laps, with Sparg and his instructors always on hand to give advice and demonstrate the neatest (and safest) lines. And even the most experienced rider went away feeling that he or she had learned something new, something that might save them from a nasty moment on the road one day. And that's why Wheels motorcycle club do it. As long as bikers keep having accidents (nearly 50 were killed on Western Cape roads in the first nine months of 2011) they'll keep teaching safety skills, as they have done for the past 11 years. Eerstens omdat ek en James Hart al as “outoppies” geklassifiseer kan word. Ons het nie gedink ons lywe gaan die rit hanteer nie. Tweedens was dit vir my en Pierre ’n Pa en Seun ding. Min outoppies is so bevoorreg om saam met sy seun, elk op sy eie fiets, so ’n rit te onderneem. Derdens was ons gelukkig om Dewald Visser met die Corsa bakkie as “back up” voertuig saam te neem. Ons het nie gesukkel met te min klere of bagasie nie, die Corsa was veilige toesluitplek vir valhelms en die swaar rybaadjies en ons kon dus maklik stilhou en rondloop om plekke te verken. Dewald se vaardigheid met ’n kamera het dan ook gesorg vir sowat 3 000 pragfotos, ’n Facebook blad en sy kosmaak vaardighede is alom bekend. Vier manne, in ouderdom van 27 jaar tot 57 jaar, het ons Saterdag die 17de om sesuur vertrek en ons eerste Mega Wimpy koffie op Belfast geniet. Daarna deur Carolina, Hendrina en Bethal tot by Standerton vir middagete. Daarna Vrede, Warden en Bethlehem tot by Clarens, waar ons in ’n gastehuis oornag het. Die paaie tussen Standerton, Vrede, Warden en Bethlehem was in ’n skokkende toestand. Die fietse se topbokse is gebruik vir rookgoed, selfone, nekkousies, skoonmaakgoed vir die valhelms en winskerms en handskoene. Ons het in elke dorp gestop en die plekke verken. Waar afstande tussen dorpe groot was, het ons elke 60 tot 100 km ’n rook / natuur / bene rek breek geneem. Sondagoggend is ons eers Golden Gate toe, daarna terug na die afdraai by Clarens en toe oor Fouriesburg, Ficksburg, Clocolan, Ladybrand, Hobhouse, Wepener en Smithfield tot by ons oornagpunt naby Bethulie, in ’n plaashuis wat ons vir onsself gehad het. Middagetes was ’Wimpy, Steers, Spur of ’n plaaslike koffiehuis en vir aandete het Dewald uitgesoekte vleis, brood, ’n verskeidenheid kase en slaaie aangekoop en ons het gebraai. Mense het nogal snaaks gekyk as ons voor maaltye hande gevat en gedank het. Maandag die 19de is ons in Bethulie in en het die Ou Kar restaurant besoek en by die Ou Vellies koffiewinkel aangedoen. Die eienaar, ’n bebaarde “biker” hou meer as 30 verskillende koffies aan en het ons trakteer met koffie wat soos Fudge proe. Daarna is ons oor die langste brug in SA oor die Gariep (Oranje), na Venterstad. Die plan was deur Steynsburg, maar almal het ons afgeraai om die verwoesde pad te ry en ons is met ’n lang ompad deur Colesberg na Middelburg (Kaap). Daarna deur Bethesda Road tot op Graaf Reinet, waar ons die Groot Kerk besoek het en binne en buite fotos geneem het. Ons was baie gelukkig omdat die orrelis daar was en ons trakteer het met fenomenale orrelmusiek. Die aand het ons by die vriendelikste mense in SA (Mabel en Basil Joubert) se Tohito B&B (Tot hier toe) gastehuis in Aberdeen oornag. Aberdeen is ’n pragtige plekkie, met grond strate (sonder stof) so gelyk soos ’n tafelblad, mooi opgepaste ou huise en die kerk met die hoogste toring in SA. Op dag vier (Dinsdag 20 September) het ons via Volstruisleegte, Willowmore, Uniondale (waar ons nie die spook gesien het nie), Herold, en George tot by Wildernis gery. Hier het ons iets nuuts probeer. Ons het by die Backpackers Lodge oornag in ’n groot koshuistipe kamer met vier enkelbeddens en ’n uitsig reg teen die strand. Jy kry vir R120 per persoon per nag ’n skoon bed, skoon badkamers, ’n lekker kuierkroeg, veilige parkering en ’n vuur om te braai. Ons het egter in die dorp die beste pizzas in die land geëet. Op dag 5 het ons ’n rusdag ingewerk. George se reuse “Mall” het gesorg vir beter klere teen die oggende se koue. Ons is Saasveld toe, waar ek geswot het en daar het ek vir die ander drie manne gaan wys hoe lyk “Californian Redwood” bome. Ons is ook in die inheemse bos in. Saasveld is goed versorg, splinternuut opgeknap en was ’n prentjie. Daarna Victoria Baai toe en daarna Knysna toe waar ons oesters geëet het. Ons het die aand weer in Wildernis by die “Backpackers” geslaap. Donderdag 22 September is ons verby die Groot en Klein Brak, Hartenbos en Mosselbaai. By Gouritsrivier het ons na die ou brug gaan kyk waar rekspronge gedoen is. Die plek is nou vervalle en die rekspringers weg. Daarna is ons deur Albertinia, Riversdale, Heidelberg (Kaap), tot by Bredasdorp. Hier het ons Kraanvoëls gesien. Daarna is ons oor Struisbaai na L’Agulas, die mees suidelike plek op die kontinent, waar die jongmanne in die ligtoring op is en ons ’n klomp Duitse toeriste se gebreekte Quantum bussie probeer herstel het. Ons het immers ’n hele werkswinkel op die Corsa gehad. Daarna oor Elim en Baardskeerdersbos tot op Gansbaai waar ons oornag het. Hier het ons ook ’n lang stuk (onbeplande) grondpad gery. Vrydag 23 September is ons deur Stanford, Hermanus, Hawston, Kleinmond, Betty’s Baai, Hangklip, Rooi Els, Gordons Baai en die Strand na Stellenbosch en van daar seelangs deur Muizenberg tot in Vishoek, waar ons twee dae in ’n luukse gastehuis gebly het. Saterdag het ons die maritime museum in Simonstad besoek, Kaap Punt in die Tafelberg Nasionale Park, Scarborough, Kommetjie, die Slangkop lighuis, Noordhoek, oor Chapmans Piek en Houtbaai, roomys geëet op Seinheuwel en oor Seepunt met De Waal rylaan terug Vishoek toe. Die kabelkar het a.g.v. die wind nie geloop nie. Sondag 25 September is ons na die V&A waterfront, Two Oceans akwarium en die middag het ons die pad terug (Noord) aangepak. Ons is deur die Hugenote tonnel en het by Worcester afgedraai na Ceres vir die nag. Maandagoggend deur die mooie Tulbach, Porterville, Piketberg, Citrusdal, Clanwilliam tot by Klawer waar ons die lekkerste wyn geproe en gekoop het. Daarna deur Vanrhynsdorp, Nuwerus, Bitterfontein tot op Garies, waar ons oornag het in die gastehuis wat deur die kubuskoning Adriaan Nieuwoud as hoofkwartier gebruik is. Baie stories is vertel. Dinsdag 27 September is ons oor Kamieskroon, Springbok, Pofadder tot op Augrabies, waar ons die waterval besoek het en twee aande geslaap het. Donderdag 29 is ons oor Kakamas, Keimoes, Upington, Olifantshoek, Sishen, Kathu, Kuruman tot in Vryburg, waar ons by die Boereplaas oord oornag het. Vrydag is ons oor Delareyville, Sannieshof, Lichtenburg, Koster, Derby tot by ons gastehuis in Magaliesburg. Hier het die eienaars uitgehang met ’n besondere aandete. Die laaste skof was Saterdag 1 Oktober via die N4 oor Pretoria, Bronkhortspruit, Witbank, Middelburg, Belfast tot by die huis. Die totale afstand was 5 128 kilometer, oor 15 dae, deur 93 dorpe en die seer lywe was die moeite werd. Die motorfietse het foutloos geloop. Ons moes een gloeilampie op die F800 vervang en bietjie olie op die 1200 GS en Yamaha “optop”. Ons het gemiddeld 300 km tussen brandstofhervullings gery met die F800 GS die ligste teen tot 25 km/l en die 1200 GS die swaarste met tot 20 km/l. Die Tenere was goed vir 450 km. Die Corsa het tot 600 km tussen hervullings geloop. Die fietse het elk net oor die 250 liter brandstof
gebruik en die Corsa net onder die 400 liter. Die twee kettingaangedrewe fietse se kettings is elke drie dae (of 1000 km) geolie en geen verdere instandhouding was nodig nie. Ons gemiddelde snelheid was 100 tot 120 km/u, wat amper te vinnig is om regtig rond te kyk. Op die lang reguit paaie in die Noordkaap, waar die landskap vir honderde kilometers dieselfde is, was ons spoed veel hoër en moes die groot BMW’s hulle inhou, of hulle het vir die 660 Tenere weggery. Die twee BMW’s was elk tweesilinder masjiene en ons het verwag dat hulle goed sou doen. Die verassing was egter die enkelsilinder 660 Yamaha, wat almal verbaas het. Die fiets kon vir ure aaneen “flat out” gery word, sonder enige probleme. Dom motoriste, koue oggende, slegte paaie, tientalle “stop / ry” padversperrings en verskriklike dwarswinde was al ongerief. By tye het ons vir ure aaneen teen 15 grade oorgehel reguit gery en die wind baklei. Twee reënbuitjies het ons nie eers natgemaak nie. Ons dank die Here dat ons veilig en voorspoedig gery het en dat die vier manne so goed met mekaar oor die weg gekom het.

Die kompetisie was baie straf en die standaard baie hoog. Bernard het 3 van die 5 wedstryde gewen terwyl Yolandi 2 gewen het. Hulle het ook Oos-Transvaal verteenwoordig. Baie geluk aan hulle.

Oefening Ramkat weer 'n reuse sukses Kampioene van posduifklub DIE afgelope naweek was die jaarlikse Oefening Ramkat wat deur die SAJWV – Bosbok tak aangebied was en het groot pret en deursettingsvermoë getoon. Die Junior Jagters was getoets vir hul skietvernuf op ses verskillende skietbane met windgewere, .22, 6mm, .270 en twaalfboor haelgeweer, oorlewings tegnieke wat ’n roete- mars ingesluit het, kookkuns en uithouvermoë. Ons jaarlikse reën het ook 'n baie groot uitdaging vir die Junior Jagters gebied.
Die NASP boogskiet het hierdie jaar ook deel gevorm van die kamp. Die Junior Jagters het die geleentheid verwelkom. Die top presteerders was Biance Bell (goud), Kobus Jonker (silwer) en Jonathan van Gent (brons). Die Opleidingsspan wil graag hul dank uitspreek aan Piet de Jager vir die gebruik van hul boskamp, Dwarsrivier Chroom Myn vir die energiedrankies en Laramie Spur, Lydenburg vir die heerlike Sondag middagete.
Alit Fourie (50) en sy pa, Louis Fourie (70) van Allo Lofts voor hul wedvlugduiwe se hokke. Alit Fourie (50) en sy pa, Louis Fourie (70) van Allo Lofts is die nuwe klubkampioene van Lydenburg Posduif Klub vir 2011. Die laaste wedvlug was verlede naweek vanaf Edenburg in die Vrystaat, gevlieg oor 'n afstand van 687 km. Alit Fourie is ook die eienaar van Huizemark Eiendomme. Louis Fourie was in sy jonger dae 'n vurige wedvlugduiweboer van formaat en het besluit om die jaar
weer bietjie litte los te maak en te vlieg en sodoende saam met sy seun Alit gevlieg. Hy se dit hou hom jonk van gees! Lydenburg Posduif Klub sal dit erg waardeer indien iemand hul kan help met die donasie van 'n skaap en varkie vir hul jaarlikse prysuitdeling. Joao is also on an incentive basis and receives free airtime for every win and got the big bonus incentive this year for Allo Lofts being the new 2011 Club Champions. Joao says he is very proud of training the Club Champions this year. “My pigeons are like my own children. I like the pied colour pigeons. Last year my check pied hen was the best pigeon in our Lofts” Joao says.
