Dwarsrivier mine nominated for best employer 2011/12

D

warsrivier Chrome Mine, in conjunction with ARM took part in the CRF Institutes research survey in search for the Best Employer 2011/2012. Dwarsrivier is proud to announce that they have been certified as one of the Best Employer's for the year 2011/2012. A total of 69 organizations were listed this year – which is a 20% increase from 2010. The Certification Index identifies choice employers through administrating the International HR policy and practice research survey; proprietary of the CRF Institute. The Index is the culmination of months of rigorous research with findings independently audited by Grant Thornton South Africa. Organizations are rated in the following areas: organization strategy; the HR function; communication; diversity management; corporate social responsibility; knowledge management; talent management and engagement; performance management; and rewards and recognition. According to Samantha Crous, the CRF Institute's Country Manager, the importance of the Best Employers campaign is that it

recognises that, in a competitive labour market like South Africa where the business landscape has changed considerably over the past few years, success lies more than ever in an organisation's ability to distinguish itself by establishing and promoting excellent HR strategies and practices that can attract, retain and engage the right talent. “The companies that are featured in this year's Best Employers campaign have shown innovation and creativity in addressing some of the challenges they face in the changing business arena. Adapting to an era built on a lean structure, the corporate world has realised that it's the value of relationships with employees, rather than the traditional bottom line that counts. The latest research shows that more and more companies are turning their attention to engaging employees and have grasped the fact that engagement is about more than simply sticking a few posters on the wall in order to draw attention to certain aspects. It's about getting people to believe in the vision and of the company and how it makes a difference in South Africa and the World,” said Crous.

Crippling effect of strike XSTRATA, the world's leading ferrochrome maker, and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) were locked in talks chaired by the Department of Mineral Resources late last night to resolve a dispute over an employee share ownership scheme. The NUM embarked on a protected strike at Xstrata's coal, ferrochrome, vanadium and platinum operations in SA to back its demands for an equal allocation of shares in the local business to all employees qualifying for the scheme. Xstrata has suspended the plan. Four other unions represented at Xstrata have not joined the strike, which started on October 16 and has not abated, prompting Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu to summon Xstrata and the NUM to the Department's offices in Pretoria yesterday to find a solution. "They are still locked in talks and I don't think there will be any definitive agreement tonight," NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said yesterday . There may be an agreement in principle, but this framework would need to be taken back to each side's principals before final decisions can be taken, he said. The meeting, which started yesterday afternoon, was chaired by the no-nonsense former mineral resources director-general, Sandile Nogxina, who retired in June after 13 years with the Department. Xstrata wants the strike called off before it can resume talks for the scheme, which is worth about R2,6bn, while the NUM wants concessions from Xstrata before its members return to work. Xstrata created three bands of workers, with workers in each band being allocated a number of shares to give the South African workforce a 3% stake in Xstrata SA. The NUM said the scheme was racist as the top band was dominated by white workers .The strike has hit Xstrata's coal operations hard, with a lesser effect on the chrome, vanadium and platinum assets. Xstrata had stockpiles of coal at Richards Bay Coal

Terminal and at its mines that had ensured it was able to meet its contractual obligations, spokesman Songezo Zibi said. Most of the ferrochrome plants were fully operational, he said."We understand the NUM's dissatisfaction, since the employer will gain (economic empowerment) points due to the number of black workers included in the proposed scheme, but the employees who will receive the biggest reward out of the scheme will be those employees employed in the job categories above the job categories occupied by the NUM members," said Gideon du Plessis, deputy general secretary of trade union Solidarity. School willing to go the extra mile

D

Sy was my mentor. Boeke is my asem. Bitter min kan my so troos, oplig of kalmeer.

consider just how much a small Christian School like ours has to struggle. Not only do these children support the community in everyway – they also excel academically against all odds. Our children are graduating from Universities, receiving bursaries to study further, and being successful in their chosen fields. Our success as a schooling system can been seen by the amount of students who have achieved this – the proof is in the pudding! This year we are writing a National Senior Certificate – a first for Entheos and A.C.E. (Accelerated Christian Education). I am proud to be a part of Entheos and honoured to be able to walk with my head held high in this community knowing that we stand for integrity, honour, trust and commitment. That we support one another and care for each other no matter how tough it is, no matter how many times we have to defend ourselves against false accusations and defend our children against the tyranny that is shown us by our landlords. We WILL prevail – this is a fight against powers and principalities that we will endure till the end. God Bless Entheos and its teachers, students, and parents! Well done – you set the bar very high! We are not the only English school in Lydenburg – we are a Christian school with a difference that uses an English system.

vlug voor so voertuig.

Anonymous writes: When we moved to Lydenburg, we had every intention of enrolling our child in Entheos Christian School as we had seen the quality of education and children that came from there in our own family members' children. We enrolled our son and apart from the normal niggles with getting settled into a new town and starting a new school have not looked back. It is with great pride that I say a heartfelt and sincere thank you to the Principal and staff, and the children of Entheos, who, despite what feels like insurmountable hurdles, have never failed to include us in the Entheos family and support every single cause I throw before them. We have visited Old Age Homes, held teas for the Elderly, collected and distributed canned food, blankets and pellets for animals, we have dressed as homeless people, collected old clothes, gone to school in the dead of winter without shoes, collected shoes for orphanages, worn pyjamas to school, wrapped shoeboxes until our fingers were numb, held many different forms of fundraising events – all because it will make a difference in someone's life! The staff and children of Entheos are always willing to go the extra mile. No matter that the property we are on, and the people in charge are trying to throw us on the street! Still Entheos continues to support and work for a community that sometimes does not

raining specialist KBC Health and Safety recently re-launched its Steelpoort branch, in the Limpopo Province, as a result of a strong demand from mining clients and the contracting community in the area. An increase in the demand for best practice Basic Safety Training from KBC Health and Safety's mining and contracting clients in the Eastern Limb has spurred the training specialist to re-open their doors. The Steelpoort branch was officially re-launched on 6 October 2011 with a product exhibition that showcased the company's course offerings, which have been restructured to include elements such as first-aid, fire fighting and working-at-heights training. “Our latest innovation, the Contractor Passport™, which was also launched in the area on the day of the branch re-opening, received a significant amount of interest. The Contractor Passport™, which is a webbased system, monitors, records and stores an individual employee's record for life and links this record to a personalised card or 'Contractor Passport™'. This record relates to the person's safety training history, medical fitness certificates and competency per position,” explains KBC Project Co-ordinator Chris Taylor. Each employee that undergoes induction training with KBC Steelpoort will bring all of their relevant Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Mine Health and Safety (MHS) documentation and qualifications to the training centre on the day of training. This information will be scanned in and linked with the students profile through the personalised Contractor Passport™ card. When the employee's card needs to be read at a safety checkpoint, it can be done either via the Contractor Passport™ website, via sms or with a smart phone camera using the card's barcode. Contractor Passport™ aims to provide reciprocity in the Steelpoort Region and beyond. Mines in the area are encouraged to accept the KBC SETA aligned training as sufficient for their own organisation, whether KBC trains on their mine or not. In this way, contractors arriving at the mine without a valid KBC Contractor Passport™ will not necessarily have to be re-trained. This will save both time and money. “The intention is for all mines in the region to accept KBC training even if it is not compulsory for their contractors to train with KBC. This allows contractors who train with KBC to move from one mine site to several others without having to re-do the training at every new site. The benefits of the system are manifold for both the mines and the contracting companies, some of which include a single standard of competence; time and money savings; and skills validation,” explains Taylor. KBC Managing Director Graham Emmett, says that the Contractor Passport™ has been implemented in the Steelpoort Region and will soon be introduced in the Witbank Coal Region and the Platinum sector as well. It offers a solution for the mining and construction industry to create a single standard of SHE training and improve efficiencies and effectiveness for contractors and employers at a time crucial for the industry to re-engineer its safety practices. “KBC's outlook for the future is to set the international minimum standard and share best practice in the health and safety industry. Steelpoort and its surrounding areas are no exception for KBC's vision,” explains Emmett.

Cadets excited about their future DWARSRIVIER Chrome Mine has started a training initiative called Cadet Schemes. The scheme involves identifying people from the local communities, who have never had experience in the mining industry, and providing them with training, free of charge, to equip them with skills needed in the mining sector. This will allow them to apply for vacancies in the mining industry that they were previously not considered for as they did not meet the minimum requirements or have the relevant experience. Some of the trainees that complete their programmes successfully will be permanently employed at Dwarsrivier Mine as vacancies arise. The rest will be released back into their communities where they are now equipped to apply for vacancies with other mines in the area. The first cadets were assessed on the 26th September 2011 and 33 cadets were successful to date. The cadets had to

undergo three different assessments including, practical and theoretical assessments as well as a Dover test. The Cadet Scheme is a 3 month programme and after completion each and every cadet receives a Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine competency certificate. Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine aims to train100 LHD and 80 RDO cadets.

So ’n slang is onlangs buite Lydenburg naby Xstrata gevind.

Msa Africa Sponsors International Award In Recognition Of Excellence In Mining Safety MSA, leading manufacturer of sophisticated safety equipment and locally represented by MSA Africa, is proud to be the official sponsor of the prestigious John T. Ryan Safety Award, recognising outstanding safety practices in the mining industry. This year saw the award presented in South Africa for the first time. “This award pays tribute to mines that are dedicated to turning a passion for safety into success,” says Hayley Arnesen, Customer Focus Programs and Loyalty Director, MSA Africa. The John T. Ryan award was presented at the prestigious annual MineSAFE Awards, held on 19 August. A joint venture between the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the Association of Mine Managers South Africa (AMMSA) and the South African Colliery Managers Association (SACMA), and with valued input from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), the Chamber of Mines, the National Union of

Mineworkers (NUM) and the United Association of South Africa Unions, the event provided an opportunity for several mines to share and learn new ways of improving safety within the industry. “This annual conference is designed to help bring South African mines to the goal of 'Zero Harm',” says Arnesen. A newly established South African John T. Ryan committee, consisting of representatives from AMMSA, SACMA, SAIMM, and the Chamber of Mines, was tasked with determining which South African mine had the lowest total injury frequency rate (TIFR) during 2010. The award was presented to Modikwa Platinum Mine, a joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Anglo Platinum. Although there was only one overall winner in 2011, in future a winner will be selected for each of the four different categories: Platinum, Gold, Coal and Diamond & Base Metals. Each of the category winners will receive a plaque with the overall winner collecting the bronze floating trophy.

About the John T. Ryan Safety Award THE John T. Ryan Safety Award recognises outstanding safety practices in the mining industry. This year saw the award presented in South Africa for the first time to MODIKWA PLATINUM MINE, This award pays tribute to mines that are dedicated to turning a passion for safety into success. The John T. Ryan award was presented at the prestigious annual MineSAFE Awards, held on 19 August. A joint venture between the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the Association of Mine Managers South Africa (AMMSA) and the South African Colliery Managers Association (SACMA), and with valued input from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), the Chamber of Mines, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the United Association of South Africa Unions, the event provided an opportunity for several mines to share and learn new ways of improving safety within the industry. The trophy, depicting a miner coming home to his family at the end of his shift, symbolises the importance of every life. The trophy was named after John Thomas Ryan, a mine rescue worker in the USA coal mines in the early 1900s. Ryan and George Deike, a fellow rescue worker, identified the lethal combination of methane gasses and open flame cap lamps as one of the main reasons for the high fatality rates in the mines at that time. Working with Thomas Edison, the partners developed and launched the first incandescent cap lamp that has become the forerunner of the electric cap lamp that is still used today.

The trophy, depicting a miner coming home to his family at the end of his shift, symbolises the importance of every life. This idea is best put in the words of French Inspector General of Mines, Fredric Le Play (1806-1882): “The most important thing to come out of a mine is the miner.” The trophy was named after John Thomas Ryan, a mine rescue worker in the USA coal mines in the early 1900s. The launch of this product saw the birth of MSA in 1914. MSA subsequently became involved in the development of self-breathing apparatus used by soldiers in World War 1. Following the War, John Ryan spread his safety message to other industries, such as steel and chemicals; and MSA grew and expanded into Canada.

In order to promote safe mining production, MSA Canada offered to donate a prestigious trophy to recognise notable achievements in safety practices. This trophy was accepted by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and they launched the John T. Ryan National Safety Trophies in 1941. The success of this programme has seen it being exported to various countries including Chile, Peru, and now South Africa.

Stuurinsette is redelik direk.

Ek dink hy sal baie goed verkoop. Andre Coetzee.

Hyundai Accent shifts the benchmark CARMAKERS need to sit up and start worrying. The Highlands Panorama News tested the new Hyundai Accent this week. What a car! Coming in at R 149 000, the full house Accent offers value for money like no other. The Accent is a sedan with a boot, and a huge boot at that. The car is ultra modern, with beautiful flowing lines that create the impression of a coupe. It looks very much like the Elantra. We tested the GL, but a GLS version is also available at R10 000 more, the latter of course fully loaded with features. In GL guise, the Accent comes with electric windows up front, (front and rear on GLS) ultra effective airconditioning, airbags, a radio with AUX and iPod in (no CD on GL), ABS with EBD, four wheel disc brakes, gas shocks, power steering (adjustable), electric mirrors, 5-speed manual (or 4-speed auto), and the phenomenal 1600 Gamma engine, making 91kW and 156Nm. There is an on-board computer, digital temperature and fuel gauges, remote, keyless entry and parking sensors on GLS. The normal crumple zones and side impact bars are standard. Boot and fuel flap are opened remotely. The Accent is available in seven stunning colours, our test model painted a beautiful “clean blue”. Everyone at the office ooh and ahh’d about this car, everyone commenting about the beautiful lines, the copious amounts of legroom in the rear and the exceptionally large boot. We loaded up three adult males and took to the road. The 1600 Gamma engine pulls like any two-litre. With an open road we managed 170 going uphill past Laske Nakke and the Hyundai was still accelerating. Remarkable indeed! At a legal 120 the engine turns at a leasurely 3500 rpm. Clutch, brake and accelerator pedals operate smoothly with the lightest of pressure. The gearshift is super slick. The steering is light, albeit a bit vague in the straight ahead position at speed. I suspect that the Accent will handle even better (like the Opels) with Michelin tires at around 2.2 bar of pressure. The car is quiet, with no engine or wind noise. Some road noise (very slight) is transmitted by the tires. The air conditioning system works very well, with an automatic lock system that allows maximum flow and cooling with one touch. Other small features that impressed us, were touches such as a garage card holder in the right hand sun visor, for those pesky toll gates. The body is stiff with no squeaks or rattles. Build quality inside and out is very good. The Hyundai Accent is a very comfortable car to drive. It is powerful and lively, putting a smile on your face. If I was impressed by the Elantra, the i30, and the i20, I was bowled over by the Accent. It will lure buyers away from the other brands, and at this price, certainly take a big chunk out of their sales. In GL spec, the only gripe is the lack of CD on the radio, but to be fair, I have long since stopped listening to CD’s. My music is on a USB memory stick and the radio provides for USB input. The Hyundai Accent is a phenomenal car, priced very well. To not consider it, could be the biggest car buying mistake of your life. Well done Hyundai! Andre Coetzee.

Tucking awesome! ORGANISERS describe the three-wheeled auto rickshaw provided for a rally across India as the “ultimate long-distance off-road machine”. A driver calls it a “hair-dryer-powered tin can on shopping cart wheels”. A sense of humour is as important as a sense of adventure and a willingness to raise cash for charity for anyone signing up for the Rickshaw Run, a 3500km odyssey organised by The League of Adventurists International. The British-based company says it is “not just hell-bent on fighting to make the world less boring but also raising massive buckets of cash for charities”. The Adventurists provide teams with one of India's famed Bajaj 145cc rickshaws, start and finish lines and a two-week deadline. In return, each team is required to raise a minimum of £1000 (about R12 500) for a charity chosen by the company, while also paying a rickshaw 'hire' fee of £1000. The Rickshaw Run is held three times a year. The autumn run this year, from September 11 to September 24, was in benefit of Frank Water, a charity building water-treatment stations in poor village communities in India. The organisers insist they are not “hand holders”. Teams of up to four people are given the three-wheeled, hand-cranked, open-sided vehicles - also known as tuktuks - and a few tips on what to avoid, and the rest is up to them. The route, accommodation, rough roads, wild traffic, monsoon floods, cows in the middle of the highways and mechanical and medical emergencies must be handled by the teams themselves. “That's the adventure,” said Matt Davis, an India Adventurists staff member. At the start of the run at Shillong in north-eastern Meghalaya state, 74 teams were presented with their rickshaws, brightly pimped in team colours and with names such as “By Hook or by Tuk” and “Tucking Awesome”. They were all supposedly in good working order. On the first day three teams lost their wheels. “We did not know anything was wrong until we saw the wheel roll past us on the mountain road,” a team member from Tucking Awesome said. “That was the start of our nightmare.” At one stage Tucking Awesome could only drive at 20km/h - way short of the maximum speed of 60kmh a rickshaw could achieve on a rare good road. Another team, Right Place, Right Time, also lost a wheel on the first day then went on to have its chassis split in two, its brakes fail, throttle cable snap and an electrical fire. They were not alone in their misery. Team Brits Abroad, broke down “a hundred times”, complaining that their trip was “not an adventure. Breaking down is not an adventure!” The breakdowns, getting lost or having to put the rickshaw on a riverboat because the highway “ran out” for Rangeela Racers, were all part of the experience. Other dangers were more testing. Some teams were robbed and beaten up in Bihar, a state troubled with Maoist rebels and bandits. Others sought to avoid the state by putting their rickshaws on a train and skipping it all together. Despite the challenges most teams tried to stay positive. Team Gandhi Warhol wrote on their blog: “Watched sunrise over Mount Everest this morning in Darjeeling. “Broken so far: brakes, rear lights, front fog lights, spark plug, chassis, horn, fuel intake. Service and roadworthiness test complete. On we go through Bihar.” Not all who start the run make it to the end. One team left their rickshaw at a police station at the end of the first day, telling the organisers “it was not what we signed up for”. But the sense of achievement for those teams that did cross the finish line in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan was tremendous. “I never thought we would make it,” said Jennifer Morris, a Habibi Babes team member. “After days of breakdowns, driving in the dark and being driven off the road by big trucks, we had almost lost hope. “But we made it, we made it!” The Adventurists also host the Mongol Rally, Mongol Derby (on horseback) the Africa Rally, the Ice Run (1500km across the frozen Siberian wilderness on 650cc Ural motorbikes and sidecars), among others. Charity always plays a part. “We figure since we are rather fond of adventuring in the world we should do our bit to look after it,” the adventurists say. - AFP & iol.co.za ED: This sounds like a truly awesome adventure and an experience of a lifetime!

If you think quads are dangerous, you have’nt seen anything yet. These top heavy trikes with upright forks and tiny wheels are real “suicide” machines and they are very unreliable. Imagine doing an off-road long distance trip in one!
