After a year of hard work the Festive Season is upon us and it is a time of rest and taking it a step slower. This is a photo of Two Rivers Platinum Mine that epitomizes the heart of the mining industry. It is truly a picture perfect scene when night falls over the Steelpoort area and all the mines turn on their lights. This is the last issue of the Mining and Industry 2011, it appeared every last week of the month. Riool ‘pomp’ by verkeerde plek uit DIE rioolpompstasie naby die hoek van Jansen- en Rivierstrate is steeds buite werking. ’n Dik stroom riool vloei vanaf die pomstasie na die aansluiting van die Sterkspruit met die Dorpsrivier, waar dit die water direk besoedel. Die stank in die area is ondraaglik en die gemors is nou so gevestig dat dit al ’n moeras gevorm het, waardeur geen mens of gewone voertuig by die pompstasie kan uitkom nie. Die digte plantegroei dui ook daarop dat hierdie probleem al jare voortduur. Die Highlands Panorama Nuus het gereeld met die Stadraad oor die probleem gepraat, so lank terug as wat wyle Quintus Loots (wat al bykans twee jaar oorlede is) nog geleef het. Daar is elke keer ’n ander probleem of kombinasie van probleme by hierdie pompstasie, van elektriese kabels wat gesteel word, tot die mangat / opvangput voor die pompstasie wat blokkeer. Ons doen ’n beroep op die TCM om hierdie probleem aan te spreek asseblief. Andre Coetzee.
Lodger a survivor - shot 5 times Michelle Boshoff
T
he beautiful and loving cat of Mrs Sandra Gregory of Lydenburg was shot five times by a pellet gun. As if that was not enough the criminals / scum of the earth (editorial comment) kicked off Lodger’s shoulder. Lodger - the unique name for the cat literally lodged a ride with the Gregory’s when they moved to a new home in Lydenburg. When they arrived they found Lodger on top of the furniture truck. Lodger quickly became one of the family. It goes beyond comprehension for people to shoot any harmless animal point blank. If the shooter reads this, please be advised that it is against the law. If you weren’t caught now, you will be caught next time. Lodger is a real trooper and with the help of the vet and the Gregory Family he will be up and running in no time at all.
‘Gentle giant’ se dood laat verlies vir almal JP Snyman is op 17 November skielik oorlede. Hy laat vrou Hannelie en drie dogters, Laurenda, Bianca en Latitia agter. JP was die eienaar van Thuli Construction en die Voorsitter van Lydenburg Hengelklub. Lohann van der Merwe noem dat JP ’n “gentle giant” was. Ludick Maritz se JP het ’n manier gehad om diep in mense se harte te klim, niks was vir hom ontmoontlik nie. JP het ons verlaat en laat ’n groot leemte agter, nie net op visvang gebied nie, maar op alle gebiede. Frik Rousseau het gesè day JP baie van sy kennis van visspesies met hom gedeel het en hom baie gehelp het. Die gemeenskap het ’n groot leier verloor.

Bykans 100mm binne ’n uur DIE baie en swaar reën wat op Donderdagaand 17 November geval het, was welkom om die droogte te breek, maar dit het ook groot skade gebring. By ’n private weerstasie naby die waterwerke is 98mm aangeteken en by die Highlands Panorama Nuus kantore 47.7mm, toe spoel die water die nuwe sement om die sensorpaal uit en val die reënmeter om! In die middel van die dorp is 102mm gemeet en op ander plekke tot soveel as 130mm. Oral is waterafvoerpype oorstroom en in Pretoriusstraat het riool sentimeters diep uit die mangat op die hoek van Pretorius en Ruiter geloop. Buitemure het omgeval by Manor Guesthouse (Potgieterstraat kant), by die woonstelle op die hoek van Rensburg- en Potgieterstrate en die muur by klein Kowynspas (Eeufees- en Lydenburgstrate) het ook gedeeltelik omgeval. Meer as 20 besighede in totaal is oorstroom en by Lewis meubelwinkel het gedeeltes van die plafon onder die watermassa uitgeval en waterskade is aan nuwe meubels aangerig. By die kruising van Brown- en Prellerstrate het ’n boom omgeval en die straat versper. By Rooikat Rugbypark was groot dele om die veld onder water. Vrydagoggend was talle besighede besig met opruimingswerk. Party mense se huise het hordes lekplekke gehad en moes selfs beddens wegskuif om te kon slaap. Die krag en watertoevoer was soos gewoonlik in groot dele van die dorp af, na die storm. Die Sterkspruit het Vrydagoggend bietjie sterker gevloei, maar was nog ver van vloedtoestande af. Die publiek word gemaan om veral in laagliggende dele op hulle hoede te wees en mense met plat dakke moet versigtig wees dat balke nie meegee onder die massa van so baie water of hael nie. Maak seker dat stormwater inlope in die straat voor jou huis oop en skoon is en dat vullis nie die vloei van water belemmer nie. As jy tuinmure het, maak seker dat daar gate of pype deur die mure op laagliggende dele is, sodat die water nie opdam en die mure omstoot nie. Andre Coetzee.

Jaco van Straaten en Trinette Schoeman is op 15 Oktober in die huwelik bevestig te Stellenrust Wylandgoed in Stellenbosch. Trinette is die dogter van Tinus en Annette Schoeman van Lydenburg, sy is hier gebore en getoë. Sy het in 2005 aan die Hoërskool Lydenburg gematrikuleer. Hulle vestig hulle in Somerset-Wes. Hulle bedank graag soveel van hul Lydenburg-vriende wat hul troue bygewoon het.
Andre Coetzee sê dankie Ek wil graag die persone of instansies wat betrokke was by die opvul / herstel van die sloot oor Brownstraat, naby die Prellerstraat kruising bedank vir hulle werk. Hierdie uitgeryde sloot was werklik ’n kopseer. Nou kan ons weer rustig hier ry, sonder om uit te swaai of feitlik stil te hou. Ek weet ongelukkig nie wie die werk gedoen het nie, maar nogmaals baie dankie!

Winskopie MOOI man! Nou kan ons in hierdie vrot, korrupte land ’n “egte” matrieksertifikaat koop wat by Umalusi geregistreer is, vir die winskopie van slegs R2 000! Aldus die nuus. So, mammies en pappies, haal dadelik julle hardwerkende kinders uit die skool en gaan koop vir hulle matrieksertifikate. En waarom nie? Die vervalsers is so goed en so in met die Departement dat daar geen verskil tussen die sertifikaat is waarvoor jy jou watsenaam af werk en die een wat jy kan koop nie. Suid Afrika het onder ANC bewind so ver in die moeras ingesak, dat die idiote nie eers weet wat verkeerd is nie, want hulle weet regtig nie, wat staan nog om iets reg te maak! Maar dis reg so, wat jy saai sal jy maai. Dit staan in die Bybel, maar watwou, hulle kan nie eers Bybel lees nie, so wat is die punt?

Terwyl hy met die werkers op die toneel gepraat het, h e t d i e To y o t a bakkie teen die afdraende begin weghol. Die bestuurder het dit agterna gesit maar tevergeefs. Gelukkig het die bakkie links geswaai en deur die nuwe muur om die Barko ontwikkeling gebars, waar groot grondhope dit tot stilstand gebring het. Indien dit padlangs bly weghol het, kon dit ander motors of ’n huis getref het, met tragiese gevolge. Die erg geskokte bestuurder meen hy het dalk in sy haas vergeet om die handrem op te trek. Kobus Bekker, werksaam by Khumbulane Mining, is op 13 November oorlede sowat 20km buite Polokwane. Hy is Saterdag 19 November 2011 in Riebeeckstad begrawe. Christo en Marietjie Bekker sê dankie aan almal in Lydenburg vir die boodskappies van bemoediging. Indien iemand meer wil weet kan hulle Marietjie se Facebook blad besoek. 'n Baie groot en spesiale dankie aan Ann en Louw , Louise en Steve en Charmaine en Osie. Die familie sê hulle weet nie hoe hulle hierdeur sou kom en die groot hartseer sonder hulle gedurige bemoedinging nie. Die familie bedank Gustie en sy span vir hul hulp en liefde. Ook Baie spesiale dankie vir Gustie vir die finansiële hulp.

Mashishing en Lelievlei kry huise
S
aterdag is twee huise in Mashishing en ses wooneenhede in Lelievlei oorhandig deur die Burgemeester, mnr. Moses Marobela en mnr. Temba Sgudla van Vipcon. Die inwoners van Lelievlei was baie dankbaar vir die nuwe wooneenhede en hulle het met groot vreugde ingetrek. Nog wooneenhede sal in die toekoms gebou word. Na die oorhandiging van die wooneenhede en huise is daar in Mashishing Stadsaal ’n formele funksie gehou. Me. Linkie Strydom, die Burgemeester mnr. Moses Marobela, ’n verteenwoordiger van die Departement van Sosiale Ontwikkelling en mnr. Frik Rousseau, Beheerraadslid van Lelievlei, by die oorhandiging van die wooneenhede by Lelievlei.
Challenges of growth and job creation discussed A local economic development (LED) strategy workshop for Thaba Chweu was held at the Municipal Chambers on 17 November. This workshop was facilitated by Urban Econ and although poorly attended, the challenges and opportunities for growth and job creation in our area were evident. At this workshop were from left Pierre van Jaarsveld from Urban Econ, Cinderella Cave from Thaba Chweu Municipality, Mike Ncongwane from Lydenburg / Mashishing Business Chamber and Mahlatse Mankge from Urban Econ.
Mnr. Frik Rousseau, beheerraadslid van Lelievlei, het in sy toespraak die Burgermeester en mnr. Temba Sgudla bedank vir al die bystand en hulp wat hulle aan Lelievlei verskaf en daarop gefokus dat die skenking van wooneenhede en die huise ’n goeie voorbeeld is van hoe die privaatsektor en die staat kan saamwerk. Me. Lynette Duvenhage bestuurder van Lelievlei het aan die Burgemeester en Mnr Temba Sgudla sertifikate van Afrika Lelie Projekte oorhandig vir hul volgehoue bydraes aan Lelievlei.

DIE Lydenburg Rusoord vir Bejaardes en Woonstelle het Vrydagaand hul Kersete geniet. Die tafels het gekreun onder die kos en die inwoners het almal persente ontvang. Met mnr. Nico Cross as die seremoniemeester kon dié partytjie nie anders as om vol lewe te wees nie. Me. Jeannetta Kruger, die Bestuurder van Rusoord, het saam met haar span en komitee groot hoogtes bereik hierdie jaar. Sy en haar man mnr. At Kruger het hul lewens gewei daaraan om van Rusoord ’n spoginstansie te maak. Hulle is leiers in die gemeenskap en sorg altyd dat die lewenskwaliteit van die bejaardes verbeter. Die voorsitter van die Beheerraad mnr. Andre Coetzee, het gesê dat daar baie nuwe verbeteringe hierdie jaar aan die gebou en perseël gedoen is. wo Rivers Platinum believes that caring for young children, using the proper facilities and educational tools, enables them to make a greater success of their educational future. Hence the extra drive and energy on establishing this part of our education system, which will benefit both the local youth and community in the long-term.The children of Mmabana
Day Care Centre and Madibeng Primary School in the local community of Steelpoort Park, have been given this opportunity by Two Rivers Platinum. Both these facilities currently accommodate 139 learners in total and it has the opportunity to grow even bigger, due to the developments in this area. The growing pressure on the
schools' infrastructure, and a lack thereof, definitely has a negative influence on the learner's educational experience. TRP donated Parkhomes that will be utilized as classroom facilities in order to ensure a more conducive environment for learners to be educated and developed.

Employee Wellness a priority In today's fast-paced, rapidly changing society, unprecedented pressures, heavier workloads, family commitments, all of which have to be dealt with at a personal level, it is inevitable that these pressures will impact on our employees and the organisation. Two Rivers Platinum subscribes to the definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. We recognise that both the internal and external problems interfere with an employee's concentration, endurance and motivation and that a definite link exists between the personal and work sphere of every employee. We embarked on a structured Employee Wellness Programme in collaboration with the Careways Group. The programme was launched during the month of October in an attempt to improve the employee's quality of life and performance by helping employees solve their personal problems. he search for gainful and rewarding employment is an all-too-real preoccupation for thousands of unemployed youth in South Africa today. Of the many that leave their homes each day in search of work, with unemployment soaring to more than 40% nationally, the hard fact of the matter is that the majority will return home unsuccessful. Studies have shown that this is one of the contributory factors towards high crime levels. The alternative is to engage and enable South African youth to become self-employed. “We need to skill and encourage our youth to start their own businesses - a core competency of the private sector, because this can be a daunting prospect for those with little training or experience” added Mr. Adriaan de Beer, the Business Leader. Two Rivers Platinum, through its SED Programme and in partnership with Kagiso Business Consultants (KBC) have initiated the TRP Youth Entrepreneurship Development Programme. Training provided through this 3 month programme is meant to empower the participants with business and financial skills to either start their own businesses or contribute meaningfully in the private and public sectors. All the participants were also given the opportunity to participate in the Best Business Plan competition. A credible panel of adjudicators comprising of independent and experienced business consultants, bankers, and procurement specialists with no vested interest in the process, helped choose the finalists and the winning business plans. Among the winners was Bophelo Bo Botle, a garden service and landscaping entity, which subsequently also secured themselves a lucrative contract with Two Rivers Platinum. “Two Rivers Platinum Mine's business is not just about mining and processing PGMs, it is about being a catalyst
for change and driving up-liftment in needy communities. It is about establishing partnerships to facilitate social transformation. It is also about meeting the needs of the local communities in the areas of education, with strong bias towards early-childhood development, infrastructure development, community development and sustainable wealth and job creation through entrepreneurship development as well as enterprise development” said Bethrum Dzonzi, the Public and Corporate Affairs Manager for Two Rivers Platinum. “Corporate Citizenship requires much more than a shortterm cheque book charity. TRP's philosophy is to fund and develop sustainable social and economic projects that guarantees improved standards of living within previously disadvantaged communities in the region and in South Africa. It is a model that encourages empowerment and job creation. abohlale has worked two months in a row without a Disabling Injury. During the last eight months they have worked four months without a single DI. This is an exceptional achievement, taking their difficult ground conditions into consideration. The Manager, Mr Johann Kotzè, the Mine Overseers, Mr Rudi van den Berg and Mr Leonard Hlatswayo, together with their whole team maintain their zero tolerance towards sub standard safety standards. Frequent safety meetings are being held to discuss safety issues, and to increase safety performance. This will promote tourism in the area. “We have always struggled to direct visitors to our various communities from either Steelpoort or Jane Furse side. Today we can confidently invite people to the area without any fear of them getting lost as Ngwaabe is much bigger though, comprising of the various villages and Traditional Councils, thanks to Two Rivers Platinum,” said Sekgobela, a local resident. The Mine has committed sponsorship of similar signage at all the 18 villages as well as at the new GTM offices in Burgersfort. The Mine have also offered, after being approached by the Executive Mayor of Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM), Counsellor Mr Mahlathe Nkosi for assistance, to provide professional name plates at each of the 200 offices in the GTM building. These offices are currently only marked with papers. “This is our contribution towards service delivery and an effort to assist the Executive Mayor during his term of office in his various campaigns aimed at providing what the people of Burgersfort and Tubatse are asking for” said Mr. Adriaan de Beer, the Business Leader at Two Rivers Platinum.

Roof of Africa not for sissies! S TA R T I N G t o d a y, t h e 4 4 t h running of the Roof of Africa acknowledged as Southern Africa's most gruelling off-road motorcycle race in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, will take place from 24 to 26 November. Final preparations are in place and the entry list has closed at 234, including 26 international riders from Australia, New Zealand, Germany, the UK and Portugal. A group of experienced riders none of whom will be competing - went out this past weekend in hot conditions to plot the route, which convenor Mike Glover described as “epic”. He said: “We really wanted to create a route that would not only challenge all of the competitors in the Bronze, Silver and Gold Classes, but also expose them to awesome new areas and some of the most beautiful riding scenery anyone could hope for.”

Motoring Editor / Motor Redakteur: Andre Coetzee andrec@intekom.co.za 083 626 6305 The first change to the traditional Roof of Africa format will hit the riders on Thursday, November 24, with the traditional Round the Houses street race running in reverse, with an additional Romaniacs-style section where riders will have to tackle some man-made obstacles before continuing on tar. The riders will then continue immediately to the Thaba Bosiu a rea a bout 2 0km o utside Maseru to tackle a new Time Trial section - and aggregate times will determine the starting order for Friday's racing section. Racing Section Two will start at 6am (we said it was tough) on Friday from Molangoane Lodge and will take riders over Black Neck Pass (in reverse), Spiderman, Hijack and Mad Cow Pass - to name but a few - to Nyakosoba and Two Bridges with a “red carpet” finish for competitors in the Bronze and Silver Classes at ULI Forest. Gold Class riders, however, will still have to get through a new section near Roma officially known as Free Fall; Hell Hill would probably be more appropriate. Local businessman Seamus McCarthy, a veteran of many Roof adventures and who laid out the 2010 route, describes it as “extreme”, with a spectacular finish on a 55-degree rocky gradient. The survivors will line up at 6am on Saturday at Molangoane Lodge knowing that the worst is still to come the final day will be by far the toughest. Bronze Class competitors will finish at Free Fall, but will have all day to get there while the Silver and Gold Class riders will face a six-kilometre climb to the Mankaluba Pass, almost 3000m above sea level, which has never before been ridden competitively. After that will come the aptlynamed Seamus' Slide, a new version of Poponyane, then Belokomo, Cannibal Bridge and finally, for the Gold Class riders, the dreaded Bushman's Pass. Race fans are welcome to join the festivities each night at the new Roof Fan Zone at the Lesotho Sun where the day's action will be featured on the big screen and the route for the next day explained. We test the new Kia Rio 1.4 TEC THIS week we tested the new Kia Rio 1.4 TEC. This is the top spec model in the new Rio range and comes fully loaded. Instrumentation includes fuel, temp, speedo, revcounter and trip computer that gives info on fuel consumption, average speed, two trip meters, outside temp, gearshift indicator and distance to empty. The radio/CD is MP3 compatible, with iPod and Aux in and with a good six-speaker system. Sound quality is very good. The automatic aircon (climate control) on the 1.4 TEC works very well and we were particularly impressed with the control layout below the aircon screen. Nice, high quality feel switchgear! Electric control on all four side windows with one touch for the driver sits in the driver’s door, together with the switches for adjusting the side mirrors. These can also be folded electrically to prevent damage when parked, especially in small garages or public parking spaces. Headlights have an auto function, are adjustable from inside and the 1.4 TEC features daytime running lights, fog lights and indicators in the mirrors. There are leather seats, a huge, cooled glovebox, additional 12V power point, cigarette lighter, removable ashtray, centre console storage and drink holders in all the doors. You also get rain sensing wipers and alloy pedals on 1.4 TEC. On the road, the Kia Rio is very quiet. The six-speed gearbox shifts very smoothly and the engine turns at just over 3 000 rpm at 120 in sixth. At 140 the engine turns at only 3 600 rpm, meaning that on level roads at legal speeds, the car should return excellent fuel consumption with little harmful emissions. Fuel tank capacity is 43 litres. The disc/drum brakes are good and the car handles very well. We took her up to 180 in order to check high speed stability and everything was fine. All the usual safety features such as ABS and EBD, together with six airbags are available. Park distance control when reversing is standard on the 1.4 TEC. Acceleration and overtaking ability are OK for a 1400, but not exceptional. The 1.4 Gamma engine makes 79 kW and 135 Nm of torque. The car comes with beautiful 17 inch mag rims (1.4 TEC) and the spare is a full sized mag wheel as well - a great plus! The boot is fairly large for a hatchback and is larger than on the previous Rio. The electric power steering is light to operate, comes with full satelite controls including Bluetooth for your phone and the steering is adjustable for rake and depth. The wheel is thick, leather covered and with a small sportscar like diameter. Ten body colours are available and the car’s design by Peter Schreier is beautiful. There are a lot of visual similarities with new Opel Astra / Corsa. All things considered, you get excellent value for your R168 000. The car is nice to drive and the build quality is excellent. There is a 5-year / 100 000 km warranty and a 4-year / 60 000 km service plan. I cannot criticise anything on the new Kia Rio 1.4 TEC. Personally however, I would have liked a bigger (1600 or even bigger) engine. Well done Kia! Andre Coetzee
