he case of the missing Mrs Nella Francom was first investigated in May 2010 after her daughter alerted the police to her disappearance. Investigations led the police to suspect that Francom faked her own death in a staged accident on the Longtom Pass close to Sabie. Francom apparently told her daughter, Ms Nella Coetzer, that she had an interview with a journalist at a restaurant in Lydenburg, and that was the last time her daughter heard from her. The journalists and newspapers in Lydenburg (Highlands Panorama News) were not aware of such a meeting and were questioned by the private investigator. The daughter became suspicious when her mother's Will disappeared from a bank in Hazyview. It was at first believed that she had died in a car accident after her Vokswagen Caravelle drove off a cliff and her body was burnt beyond recognition in the wreckage. Her VW Caravelle and a charred body w e r e f o u n d n e a r Ly d e n b u r g i n Mpumalanga on May 22 2010. The identity document was not damaged. It was later found that the corpse was that of a black man. The cases against Ms Ronel du Toit (Francom's former personal assistant) and Mr André Botes (a business man from Hazyview) were withdrawn. It was a drawn out court battle. The national prosecuting authority said that there was not enough evidence that Du Toit or Botes were involved in the case.

The other two accused Mr Whitey Nel (who worked at the Sabie police at the time of the fraud) and his wife Susanna (who worked at the mortuary) payed a fine and Whitey Nel resigned from the police in Sabie. Whitey Nel pled guilty on some of the charges and was issued with a fine. Mrs Francom's husband Clint, was also under investigation but died from natural causes in 2011. Mrs Nella Francom is still missing and is wanted by the SAP.

Eskom grants 116 bursaries A TOTAL of 116 students from poor families in Mpumalanga have e n ro l l e d a t v a r i o u s t e r t i a r y institutions, thanks to Eskom's bursary scheme. The national bursary scheme, which only focused on students from Mpumalanga this year, was launched at the Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust (MRTT) in Mbombela on Tuesday. "Eskom decided to offer bursaries to the Mpumalanga students this year because that is where 70% of Eskom's coal production comes from," said Eskom divisional head of Human Resources in Mpumalanga, Milly Khoza, during the launch. Khoza said the parastatal initially interviewed 300 potential candidates who applied for the bursaries last year. "Only 116 of them met Eskom's criteria and 90% of the students are in the engineering field. Almost all of them are expected to serve Eskom for four years after their studies," he said. He said it would be up to the students to stay with Eskom or leave after working there for four years. Khoza said Eskom pays for tuition fees, accommodation, books and meals for the students. He said that to qualify for the bursaries, students must achieve at least D symbols in Mathematics, Science and English. He said to make the bursary scheme possible, Eskom entered into a partnership with the provincial Education Department. Provincial Human Settlements MEC Siphosezwe Masango, who stood in for Education MEC Reginah Mhaule, said the scheme would address the shortage of scarce and critical skills in the province.”We have been making a

clarion call to business and private sector as a whole to come to the party and help in the development of human resource and improvement of skills in the province," said Masango. "I am really proud that Eskom saw a need to embrace this call in this way. Surely this is in keeping with our HR development strategy and cannot go unnoticed." He said the bursary scheme was an intervention that would rescue families from "the clutches of poverty" because students would sign employment contracts as soon as they complete their studies. He said Eskom had also shown selfless service when they agreed to add six more students to their target of 110. “This is a sign of genuine commitment and good faith, not just a compliance issue. For this reason we consider Eskom to have truly embodied the call by the nation to make education delivery everybody's enterprise," added Masango. James Mosheni and Prudence Makola from the University of Pretoria's campus in Emalahleni were the two students who attended the launch on Tuesday. Mosheni, who passed his matric at Elanga Secondary School near Emalahleni last year, said he gave up his social life to study, so that he could qualify for the Eskom bursary. "I come from an extended family of unemployed people, including my mother, uncles and grandmother, who could not have afforded to send me to university. So I gave up my girlfriend and football last year to study hard so I can get this bursary. Luckily for me I passed with flying colours and here am I today" (Issued by GCIS).

bout three weeks ago a woman in Lydenburg suspected something was wrong while locking her car. While pushing her remote, it made a sound like it was opening the car again.

The Lydenburg SAPS confirmed there is a syndicate in Lydenburg and the surrounding areas that is involved in this scam. “We have received a lot of these complaints and the public must be made aware that this can happen to them. They must also be careful when locking their motor gates and using a remote to open and close them,” said Const Ramodikwe, spokesperson Lydenburg SAPS. Car owners have for instance, pressed the remote lock button while walking away, only to find valuables inside the car have been stolen with no sign of forced entry. Even if a car is fitted with an auto-lock feature, which locks the doors and boot of a parked car within a minute or so, it gives the thief enough time to steal. The problem is that most car and gate remotes operate on the same frequency of 433MHz and the signals cancel each other out. Car dealerships, gate remote manufacturers and some police stations have been aware of this for months, but vehicle owners have been kept in the dark. The bottom line is that any remote control is vulnerable to being jammed, or having its signal interfered with. Thieves may try to take advantage of this by flooding an area with remote control signals in the hope that you might simply walk away from your car without actually checking that it did lock and arm. So these aren't break ins - the thieves' crime is to deliberately interfere with the remote signal. Check that your vehicle is locked, before you walk away.

Begraafplaas onder ‘Fokus’ se soeklig Michelle Boshoff

Karin van der Walt was nog in ’n skoktoestand na haar man se dood toe sy ingelig is deur Thaba Chweu dat hulle nie weet in watter graf haar man begrawe is nie. Volgens wat hulle in November 2011 gesê het kon haar man in Blok D nr. 12 of Blok D nr. 16 begrawe wees. Die grafnommers is nooit op die grafte aagebring nie. En soos baie mense weet kan nuwe grafte met ’n hoop grond op baie eenders lyk. Me. Van der Walt en haar familie het nie tydens die begrafnis presies opgelet of gekyk na die grafnommer nie (wat nie daar was nie). Hulle het eers later op hierdie gemors afgekom toe sy die grafsteen wou laat opsit. “My man se grafsteen is reg en gereed om opgesit te word, nou weet ons nie op watter graf om dit te sit nie. Ek vertrou nie dat hulle nou wel vir my die regte grafnommer gegee het nie. Dit verskil van die nommer wat in November 2011 ‘beskikbaar’ was, of te wel nie aan iemand ‘behoort’ het nie,” het me. Nooi bly nooi. Iemand moet dan die eerste stap neem om die ‘nooiery’ na ’n aksie oor te sit. Hoorhierso, die woord ‘nooi’ is ’n werkwoord. Lydenburg/ Mashishing Business Chamber facilitates new road with help of the private sector

The corner of Potgieter and De Clerq streets in town became a nightmare for traffic to the downtown areas and vehicles traveling to Burgersfort or Ohrigstad. In 2011 the Lydenburg / Mashishing Business Chamber took on the tedious task to facilitate the fixing up of this impassable spot. The incessant rains from November onwards hampered progress on this important job - but Chamber is proud to announce that the corner is now open for traffic again.

You can still enter for logo competition THE Lydenburg / Mashishing Business Chamber's logo competition has been extended. “Although we have received some good entries, we still need a simpler, spot on logo that would work equally well on a pencil and a banner,” says marketing and media liaison officer Gerda Whitehorn. Innocent kudu cause of accident The Mpumalanga Parks and Tourism Agency was called on Monday morning to remove a kudu near Beetgekraal. It was killed after being run over by a motorist. The driver and passenger did not sustain serious injuries but the Kudu was killed. Chief Conservator at the MTPA Lydenburg, Mr Frik Rousseau (middle), warned motorists to be on the lookout for animals on the roads.

Reënboog van kleure by Shavathon 2012

Shavathon by Toeka-tot-Nou Voor

Die groep vrywilligers by Toeka-tot-Nou het heerlik deelgeneem aan die Shavathon Saterdag 3 Maart. Die kleure het behoorlik gevloei en dit was ’n reënboog van kleure in almal se hare.

Dankie aan al die borge, vrywilligers en diegene wat hul hare geskeer en gekleur het.

Ons toets die Nissan NP 300 D/K ONS het sowat twee jaar gelede die 2.5 diesel Nissan NP 300 enkelkajuitbakkie getoets. Ons was beïndruk met dié bakkie se kraglewering en laaivermoë van meer as een ton. Ons het egter baie jare laas met een van dié reeks se dubbelkajuite gery. As ek reg onthou, was dit ’n 2.7 Hardbody, in die dae voor ons padverslae in dié koerant geskryf het. Dit was dus hoog tyd dat ons na die nuwe Hardbody, of NP 300 kyk. Hierdie bakkie val prysgewys onder die Navara , maar is net so groot as die huidige Isuzu en vorige Ford Ranger en Mazda reekse. Uit ’n waarde vir geld oogpunt, maak die NP 300 baie goeie sin. Hierdie is ’n bakkie so na my hart. Goeie grondvryhoogte, harde veerstelsel, gerieflike sitplekke, voldoende toerusting en met ’n rateltaai reputasie. Daar is ABS remme wat uitstekend werk, lugsakke voor, elektriese ruite met “one touch” vir die bestuurder, elektriese spieëls, baie goeie lugversorging, halfleer sitplekke, afstandbeheerde sentrale sluit, dubbel asbakkies, bekerhouers en ’n gawe radio / CD klankstelsel. Die kajuit is ruim, maar beenspasie agter is effe knap, hoewel jy lekker sit as jy in is. Ek het veral gehou van die klein stuurwiel wat lekker vat, maar dit kon bietjie hoër gestel word, aangesien dit ’n baie groot ou se bene kan pla. Op die pad ry die bakkie hard, wat getuig van ’n sterk veerstelsel. Soos gemeld is die remme baie goed, stuurinsette is goed en die bakkie is stabiel op spoed. Een van sy beste kenmerke is natuurlik die 2.5 tussenverkoelde turbodiesel. Krag kom mooi in as die turbo werk en die enjin verloor nie asem as die rewolusies opgaan soos met baie ander turbodiesels nie. Die ervaring is soortgelyk aan die van Isuzu se enjins. Dit alles maak dat mens maklik kan verbygaan en dat die enjin jou nie in die steek laat as jy haastig is nie. Teen 120 loop die enjin net 2 800 opm, teen 130 net oor die 3 000, teen 140 net 3 200 opm en teen 150 sowat 3 500 opm. Die wringkrag van 304 Nm en 98 kW is nie te versmaai nie. Bulte is nie ’n probleem nie en dit bly spoed optel. Ratskakeling is baie positief. Instrumentasie is duidelik en maklik leesbaar. Die regter deurrubbers het bietjie windgeraas teen ’n hoë snelheid. Die NP 300 bied besondere waarde vir geld en met ’n vrag op sal dit lekker ry en lekker sleep. Ek sal goed met een kan saamleef. Andre Coetzee.

Westvaal Mashishing wen groot WESTVAAL MASHISHING het ’n wenresep. Hulle het drie jaar gelede die General Motors handelaarskap op Lydenburg oorgeneem en sedert daardie datum het Chevrolet met agessiewe bemarking ’n hele reeks nuwe voertuie bekend gestel. Vanaf die intree Spark tot die 6.2 liter Lumina SS en vanaf die nuwe Utilty, Captiva, Orlando en Isuzu en Opel, is daar werklik ’n motor, bakkie, dubbelkajuit of SUV vir elke smaak en sak. Die harde werk het in net drie jaar, nou dividende begin toon. Met lojale en tevrede kliënte, het Westvaal Mashishing vanjaar verskeie gesogte pryse losgeslaan. Hulle filosofie is eenvoudig en sluit vanaf die verkoop van die voertuig, tot die instandhouding daarvan die volgende in: (a) Doen dit reg die eerste keer. (b) Hulle maak nie herhaalde foute nie. Gholfdag vir Dienssentrum op 31 Maart

DIE Lydenburg Dienssentrum vir Senior burgers bied ’n herfs gholfdag op Saterdag 31 Maart aan. 'n Baie spesiale “Herfsdaggholf “geleentheid word aan die spelers in en om Lydenburg asook aan spelers van ver aangebied. Die Gholfdag sal ’n ‘twee-bal’-formaat wees. Dit is vir die Dienssentrum elke jaar baie spesiaal om vir die jonges en die fikses hierdie geleentheid te reël. Die nodige reëlings het reeds in aanvang geneem en uitstaande pryse word in die vooruitsig gestel. 'Wie' is die Dienssentrum? Lydenburg en Enjabuleni Dienssentrums is daar vir Senior Burger persone 60 jaar en ouer. Lydenburg Dienssentrum het 280 ingeskrewe lede en Enjabuleni Dienssentrum het 75 lede. 'Wat' gebeur by hierdie Diensentrums? t sunrise on Saturday, 31 March 2012, a historic event will unfold in the foothills and along the crest of the majestic Drakensberg mountains, between Sabie and Lydenburg, as the Longtom Marathon celebrates its 25th Ultra and Half Marathon events. The 25th anniversary race celebrates the unique lifespan of one of South Africa's prestige road running events. The Longtom Marathon has consistently been rated amongst the top 5 road races in South Africa for the past seven years. The latest 5 year ratings announced in 2010 ranked the Longtom Ultra Marathon as the 2nd best race overall in South Africa for the period 2005 – 2010 (The Comrades Marathon took 1st place honours). The Longtom Ultra Marathon is historically popular as a qualifying race for Comrades. Many international and local professional runners run the Longtom Ultra and stay on in the area until Comrades to train in the high altitude terrain of Lydenburg and Dullstroom. Since its inception 25 years ago the Longtom Marathon has become one of the most highly rated and toughest ultra marathons' in the world. The success of the event, as well as the growth of the event over the past 5 years has led to the invitation of the (IAU) International Association of Ultra Runners for accreditation of the event. This is a prestige nomination awarded to only the best rated ultra marathons worldwide. Acquiring an IAU Label brings the benefit of international marketing of the event via the IAU newsletters and races. The IAU label also provides a guarantee to participants that the event is well staged and organised.

n Saturday 3 March there was a soccer event held at the Steelpoort Primary School whereby departments within the Lion Ferrochrome organisation were competing against each other. Since most of us know that soccer is the most popular sport in the world and that there is no other sport that is being played and watched by so many people, so was the event at Lion.

It started off by Lion Management welcoming all employees and families and informed them about the purpose of the day. All teams played against each other, and the team which won had an opportunity to play against the management team. The best team spirit award was won by the management team. Apart from having fun, playing soccer has many benefits for employees in the workplace.

Man of the match. Firstly, studies have shown that playing soccer has physical benefits and increases mental sharpness. Secondly, playing soccer assists employees to learn the importance of teamwork in the workplace, and that when there is competition amongst teams, they will not always win; and that losing is not the “end of the world”. The winners were the Vantech team and they received the Lion Cup trophy.
