Residents of Mashishing were refused entry to Lydenburg to attend work on Friday and some were threatened with death. It follows local unrest due to some political parties being unhappy with the appointment of the new mayor. They made fires at the entrances to Mashishing.

F
or many years now, Pilgrim's Rest, the governmentowned, historic old mining town has been in a state of decline. Once a tourism jewel on the greater Panorama route, but after years of neglect and broken promises from the Mpumalanga government, the future of this world-famous national asset now hangs in the balance. As the custodian of Pilgrim's Rest, the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPW) has consistently over a long period of time, neglected its duty to maintain buildings and infrastructure and to administer the town and collect rent from all tenants. In allowing many non-paying tenants to remain entrenched in their premises instead of evicting them, the DPW has not gathered the necessary income to maintain the town. Furthermore, non-paying tenants have also not invested in their businesses. Even some paying tenants have not invested in their businesses because of no long term security of tenure, thereby making any investment a risk. These concurrent processes have led to the long term decay of Pilgrim's Rest and consequently, the town has become less and less popular as a tourism destination and has already been forsaken by many large international and national tour operators. At a point in the recent past, it seemed as if government had recognized the need to reinvigorate Pilgrim's Rest and the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (DEDET) awarded a tender for a transaction advisor to set the framework for the town's redevelopment. But nothing has transpired since then, highlighting the DEDET's lack of political will to sustain this tourism icon. Coupled with the DPW's inability to administer and maintain Pilgrim's Rest, many business owners have become increasingly disillusioned with government officials and have often had to spend their own funds on maintenance and repairs of premises owned by government. With the lapsing of many leases towards the end of 2011, the DPW was obliged to initiate a new tender process and subsequently issue new leases to winning bidders. This was a great opportunity to retain good, paying tenants with successful businesses, to evict non-paying tenants through non-renewal of their leases and then to source new, talented and potential rent-paying tenants / business people who could bring much-needed, new vision and energy to the town. It would appear that DPW missed this opportunity. Instead, at the end of
June 2012, after a long period of uncertainty and missed deadlines, the DPW finally awarded 21 building leases to 14 successful bidders, of which a mere five are owners of existing businesses. Commencing on 1 August 2012, 18 premises will all have new occupiers, of which 16 are completely new to Pilgrim's Rest, and have never operated a business there. Furthermore, the successful bidders were only awarded permission to occupy existing buildings, and do not take ownership of going concerns – they simply inherit an empty (and dilapidated in many cases) shell, implying that 18 businesses as they are currently owned will cease to exist on 31 July 2012, and all these need to be re-established by the new tenants. It is also extremely worrying to hear allegations that many successful bidders do not have the required capital to start up businesses in the premises they have been awarded. Thus there is a good chance that many of the successful bidders / new tenants may not even be able to open shop. Moreover, there are also allegations that the tender process itself was flawed. With the bid price constituting 80% to 90% of the tender score, it is difficult to work out how tenders were adjudicated if, as alleged, tenders were not necessarily awarded to the highest bidders and the process seems not to have included verification of resources. It also seems strange that one bidder was awarded five leases and two others three and two respectively, casting even more suspicion on the bid adjudication and allocation process. It is the duty of government to effect transformation and broad based empowerment in all sectors of the economy and the tourism industry is no different. Such initiatives are essential for the long term sustainability of our economy and our democracy. But what might have appeared to be a quick win for government in Pilgrim's Rest could turn out to be detrimental in the long run for all concerned. If some of the new tenants are unable to open shop, this transformation exercise will be an embarrassment. There might be nothing left to transform if Pilgrim's Rest slowly shuts down over the next few months. Follows on Page 4.

Chatter away in “Letters to the Editor” ‘Twiet’ jou gedagtes in “Briewe aan die Redakteur” Ry moet jy ry, want daar is altyd iewers waar jy moet uitkom. Maar hoe nou as die brandstof duurder as 'n brood is. Stry maar met my, maar ek sien petrol as 'n basiese behoefte. Basies moet jy dit gebruik vir alles. As die kos klaar is, as die kind siek is (of 'n hond), vir werk en kerk. Dis gewis, ry moet jy ry. Dis hoekom almal mor sodra 'n prysverhoging aangekondig word. Nou kyk, almal moet begin kla oor die petrol se prys. Die motorryers, vragvervoerders, landbouers en ook al die mense wat paraffien gebruik. Tog het die regering ons bietjie tegemoet gekom. Jan Taks moet maar vat wat hy wil, ons het mos nie juis 'n keuse nie. Dit word sommer van die salaristjek afgetrek. Ek lees ook dat die petrolding nie eers ons skuld is nie. Die hoë internasionale oliepryse speel ook 'n rol. Plus die politieke onrus in die Midde-Ooste en Amerika se swak dollar. Ek het nou besluit om 'n wil-mor-taakmag in te stel sodat almal moet saamstaan. Want soos ou drommels hou ons altyd ons bekke as iets ons nie aanstaan nie. Die sêding dat ’n toebek 'n heelbek' is, kan jou nie altyd help nie. Dus wil ek hê dat die wil-mor-taakmag klaagliedere moet skryf. Hulle moet 'n blaadjie uit die aptekers se boekie vat. Toe die aptekers kwê het ons darem almal geweet 'n nare ding is besig om met hulle te gebeur. Die petrol-ding gaan maak dat ons hik en snik elke keer as ons by 'n vulstasie stilhou, niks aangenaam daaraan nie. Anders moet ek maar 'n 'n elektriese karretjie invoer (sal ook nie werk nie, want my tweepunt prop is stukkend). Wens dat karre op sweet kon loop. Almal wat die duur petrol betaal sweet meer as genoeg om die prys by te bring. Dan sal die sweet wat van ons aangesig drup die moeite werd raak.

DIE OUTOPPIE SE KOMMENTAAR
Siek DAAR is ’n baie groot skroef los in die regerende party. Die party is ernstig siek. Waar dit 18 jaar terug ’n kohesie van swart mense was wat wou wegkom van apartheid, het dit iewers langs die pad erg siek geword. Dit is enstig en waarskynlik terminaal. Ek kan nou nie agterkom of dit ’n virus soos strikkiegriep of ’n bakterie is nie, maar siek is die party wel.

There are wider implications for the greater Panorama area and Kruger Lowveld region. With Pilgrim's Rest wiped off tourists' itineraries, this means there is one less reason to visit the region. This, together with the fact that other iconic properties on the Panorama Route that are owned and managed by the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency such as God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes and the Blyde River Canyon are also in urgent need of reinvestment, maintenance and modernisation, does not bode well for the local tourism industry. With the provincial government's ineptitude in fulfilling its legislative role as custodian of national tourism and conservation assets and tourism marketer of the province, it is no wonder that Mpumalanga's popularity as a tourism destination has waned over the last few years. The possible solutions for Pilgrim's Rest are multifaceted and an innovative long term strategy needs to be put in place to save it. Government needs meaningful assistance from the private sector to develop this long term strategy. In the meantime, some short term interventions are necessary. These include: 1. Like it or not, Pilgrim's Rest is a living museum of a bygone era. This history should be preserved and government must commit to its preservation. 2. Government must acknowledge Pilgrim's Rest's status as an iconic tourism destination in Mpumalanga. 3. For transparency's sake, government should have the entire recent bid allocation process independently audited to establish whether proper bid adjudication procedures were followed. 4. Pilgrim's Rest belongs to all South Africans and so, in the interests of the wider public, DPW should make
Outoppie in die kol JOHAN Van Heerden van Lydenburg skryf: Ek het lanklaas kommentaar in ’n koerant so geniet as die onlangse “Outoppie” kolom getiteld “Tot Stilstand”, in die Highlands Panorama Nuus van 5 Julie. Dit is duidelik dat die Outoppie die politieke situasie in die land verstaan en sonder vrees, akkuraat kan beskryf. Selfs my vriende het positief reageer op die kolom. Mooi so en doen so voort!
Baie mense, blanke mense, wat in 1994 grootliks hulle rassisme oorkom het en saam gewerk het vir ’n toekoms, is deur nuwe, omgekeerde rassisme, arbeidswetgewing, regstellende aksie, BEE, korrupsie, algemene uitsluiting, wetteloosheid en isolasie nou sat vir die lot en is besig om in groter rassiste as ooit te ontaard. Hierdie polarisasie vind ook onder swart mense plaas. Ontnugter deur patetiese onderwys en hulle eie regering se korruptheid, raak eens gematigde swart mense ook nou hardegat. En dan is daar die jeugliga, wat sonder enige vaardighede, kwalifikasies (a.g.v. die onderwys) en ervaring, werkloos bly.

Transformation objectives should be clearly articulated and understood by all stakeholders. And running concurrently to these, we need to: Urgently constitute a lean and legitimate Pilgrim's Rest working committee, made up of relevant, but informed stakeholders and particularly of private sector organisations' representatives and empowered government officials to seek a long term solution to the sustainability of Pilgrim's Rest. The mandate of such a committee should be to develop and finalise this long term strategy and road map for implementation thereof within the next 6 months. The necessary government departments also need to agree to the acceptance and funding of the Pilgrim's Rest salvage plan and long term strategy at the onset of the constitution of this committee. Kruger Lowveld Tourism, as the regional tourism organisation representing private sector tourism in the greater Kruger Lowveld/ Ehlanzeni area, as an affiliate to SATSA and as a member of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industries (through its parent body Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism), will convene the first meeting of the Pilgrim's Rest working committee as soon as appropriate stakeholders are identified. These are likely to include the following: Kruger Lowveld Tourism, SATSA: National and Mpumalanga Chapter, Tourism Business Council of South Africa, South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Pilgrim's Rest Business Community (new and old), Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, SA Tourism, National Department of Tourism, DEDET: Mpumalanga, DPW: Mpumalanga and the South African Museum Services. Dankie aan VF+ Elsje du Plessis van Lydenburg skryf: Na aanleiding van die berig in verlede week se koerant VF+ Spreek skok uit oor Pelgrimsrus. Waarnemende VF+ leier, Elmarie Jansen van Vuuren van Lydenburg noem dat Pelgrimsrus se ekonomie baie skade kan lei as gevolg van tenders wat glo aan anonieme derde partye toegeken is. Ek stem heeltemal hiermee saam maar wil byvoeg dat die kultuurhistoriese aspek net so nadelig getref gaan word. Hierdie feit moet asseblief aan Advokaat en VF+ parlementslid Anton Alberts genoem word as hy 'n klag by die Openbare Beskermer indien om die Pelgrimsrus saak te ondersoek. In die verlede het die VF+ al baie hofsake gewen en ons wens hulle alle sterkte toe.
Hulle is moeg vir die ou “struggle” veterane se beloftes en verskonings. Hulle is mislei en glo steeds die blanke is die oorsaak van alles wat verkeerd loop. Intussen is binnegevegte, magsug, hebsug, gierigheid en elke bose ding besig om die party van binne af te verskeur en op te vreet soos ’n virus. En hy het dit oor homself gebring. Sy destydse beleid van maak die land onregeerbaar, werk nou teen hom. Die hartseer is dat ongeag wie in die toekoms regeer, of dit nou die ANC of die DP of Cope of die VF+ is, hierdie ingewortelde massa sal die land toenemend onregeerbaar maak, want daar is geen dissipline nie. Hiedie siekte kan net behandel word met harde werk, klipharde dissipline, “zero tolerance” teenoor korrupsie en wetteloosheid en goeie kommunikasie. Maar dit gaan baie medisyne nodig hê. Die Op-en-Wakkergroep van Ohrigstad het verlede week ’n sprokie uit hul eie pen opgevoer genaamd ‘Agterstevoor Sprokie van Datsgirho’. Al die bekende sprokiekarakters was in die toneel. Lydenburg Dienssentrum, Lydenburg Rusoord en Ohrigstad se mense het die toneel bygewoon. Veels geluk aan al die akteurs en ook dankie vir almal wat so hard gewerk het om potte en potte sop voor te sit vir die gaste. ~ Michelle Boshoff

For two days only you can have your cat or dog sterilized for free! Dr Stafford will be sterilizing 30 pets a day and this will benefit pet owners who do not have the monetary means to have their pets sterilized. One often finds pet owners who have unwanted litters every six months and this leaves them with their hands in their hair. Turning to the SPCA and Veterinary Services is not always an option, since the pet owner may not fall under the “outreach” criteria. What to do? Bring your animal to the first ever Lowveld Spayathon. However, Karin Erasmus from Pro-Life Pet Rescue calls on the community to assist with the transport of animals, to help out with medication, a venue, blankets, refreshments and also volunteers. “We need about 40 volunteers to assist with all the various aspects of this project,” Erasmus said. BNI stig Chapter op Lydenburg BNI, die internasionale Besigheidsverwysingsnetwerk, het Dinsdagaand 10 Julie die Longtom Tak (chapter) op Lydenburg gestig. Tydens die glansryke geleentheid wat in die ou Kapel by Wenakker gehou is, het Mike Levine, Nasionale Direkteur, spesiaal uit Kaapstad gekom om lede meer van die organisasie te vertel. Vir Keith Dyer, Uitvoerende Direkteur, Mpumalanga, en Jurie Schoeman, President van die Longtom Tak en eienaar van JJ’s Connection Health, was dit die uiteinde van drie maande se harde werk om dié tak gevestig te kry. Tielman Nieuwoud, van BVK, Vise President, was die seremoniemeester. BNI het ten doel om besigheid te groei deur persoonlike kontak en mond tot mond verwysings. BNI bevorder besigheid, maar elke tak bestaan uit lede wat net een tipe besigheid per sektor, per tak, verteenwoordig, wat interne kompetisie beperk en lede in staat stel om gemaklik met mekaar te kommunikeer. Besiheidsopleiding vorm ’n baie belangrike komponent van BNI se aktiwiteite en takvergaderings vind weekliks plaas. As can be expected, the car fits snugly around you. Think of the impression you get when Carmag.co.za closing the door of a Honda S2000 while you're seated behind the steering wheel, but on an even more intimate level. The small steering wheel (1,9 turns lock-to-lock, for the record) and extremely short gearlever underline the car's sporty intentions. It is all about driving and being in control. Under the louvered bonnet rests a 1,6-litre Ford Sigma engine that has been tuned to produce 93 kW and 163 Nm. That may not sound like a lot, but remember, the Caterham tips the scales at just 550 kg, and therefore the power-tomass ratio is an impressive 169 W/kg. To put this into perspective, this figure compares favourably with a Porsche Cayman R’s 175 W/kg. It takes a few kilometres to get used the three pedals: they're very close to one another and sensitive in their operation, but this setup is perfect for fast driving. The metal gearknob is also a joy to use. Shift actions can be executed quickly and with a level of immediacy. There is no play in any gear. The gearlever slides perfectly through the gates and each shift is little more than a wrist action away. If you have ever cocked a hunting rifle, you will know the feeling. Unfortunately, there are few roads around London where you can play, so it is best to head to one of the tracks used by the local automotive publications. Longcross Proving Ground (also known as Chobham Test Track) is situated 50 km (mostly on motorways) from Caterham. On the open road you do feel somewhat exposed, especially as you sit so close to the road and essentially below the axle-level of the many sizeable good lorries that ply the motorways. On the positive side, you do feel in total control. Being a motorcycle rider, I remembered to take my earplugs along. The exhaust pipe doesn't sit far from your hip, and contributes even more to the experience when driving the Caterham. Arriving at the test track, I noticed two McLaren MP412Cs. Later I found out McLaren uses this compact track for shake-down runs before customers take delivery of their cars. On the main straight the Roadsport will easily hit 160 km/h, but it's through the “snake” (the bit winding through the forest area) where the Caterham’s true colours are immediately unveiled. The engine needs little encouragement to rev. Keep it between 4 000 and 6 700 r/min and it is lively, ready to thrust the car forward. Direction changes are executed with the slightest tug of the steering wheel, while you can leave braking to what feels like a few metres before each corner. Leave it too late, and the rear will get light as you turn the steering wheel. The Avon 185/60 R14 tyres offer enough grip initially, but a more aggressive approach (getting on the throttle earlier when exiting a corner or turning into a corner with too much speed) will see the rear tyres slide very quickly. I am no driving guru, but never have I laughed out loud so many times through a corner while balancing the car on the throttle as much as the steering wheel. What a sensational experience! "The F 800 GS," it says, combines suitability for road use and touring with superior off-road qualities to bring the two worlds together to an extent not previously seen in this class of motorcycle.” The F 700 GS, however, is intended more for riders without a high level of off-road or gravel-riding expertise. "It's strengths," BMW says, "are a lower seat, all-round capability for everyday use, more than sufficient power and outstanding fuel economy.” Anti-lock brakes, are now standard across the BMW motorcycle range. Optional are other safety-related innovations within their respective classes such as automatic stability control and electronic suspension adjustment. The wellproven parallel twin now has increased output and torque for the new F 700 GS. Both models use the proven BMW 798cc, parallel-twin, quad-valve, liquid-cooled engine concept with electronic fuel-injection, closedloop catalytic converter and six-speed gearbox. The F 800 GS still delivers 63kW at 7500rpm and 83Nm at 5750rpm. The new F 700 GS benefits from a minor power and torque boost with 55kW at 7300rpm (F 650 GS 52kW at 7000rpm) and 77Nm at 5500rpm (F 650 GS 75Nm at 4500rpm). F 700 GS now has twin front disc brakes and both bikes use established suspension technology with the engine as a load-bearing element. The rear frame in square steel tubing, the aluminium double-sided swing arm and the wheels and tyres are
speedometer and rev counter are now easier to read and arranged vertically; the unit includes fuel level and coolant temperature displays. Smoke grey turn indicator covers and diode rear light covers are used and the bikes have new paint finishes. Bodywork changes, BMW says, have created a clearer design more in keeping with model character, the amendments mainly on the new side trim sections and corporate logos. Many potential customers, BMW says, wanted a lower seat height on the F 800 GS so a loweredsuspension / reduced seatheight option is available. There's also a catalogue of options and special accessories intended to address the widely differing uses for the bike by the host of GS customers. Comparing two Nissan diesel doublecabs NISSAN offers you two very different double cab bakkies, both with 2.5 litre turbodiesel engines. We compare the Navara 2.5 dCi 4x2 XE D/C with the NP 300 Hardbody 2.5 tdi 4x2 Hi Rider D/C. Let us look at the Hardbody first. This is a well proven, but older design. Selling at R 19 000 less (R 323 100 as opposed to R 342 000 for the XE Navara), the Hardbody is the more affordable choice. The 2.5 turbodiesel produces 98 kW and 304 Nm of torque. Gearbox is a 5-speed unit. Fuel tank capacity is 75 litres. Wheel rims are 16 inch and the ground clearance is 240mm. Carrying capacity is 1 005 kg and towing capacity (unbraked) is 1 400 kg. On the Navara the 2.5 turbodiesel produces 106 kW and 356 Nm of torque. Gearbox is a 6-speed unit. Fuel tank capacity is 80 litres. Wheel rims are 16 inch, but the ground clearance is lower at 230mm. Carrying capacity is 847 kg and unbraked towing capacity is 2 000 kg. Inside both have power steering, electric windows, sound systems and so on, but the Navara is more modern with better safety equipment and the aircon is more efficient, to name just a few. Rear legroom and the driving position is better on Navara. In the end, the Navara is the better choice for long distance driving and for towing. It is more powerful, a bit more more luxurious and the ride is softer. The load box is slightly bigger and the vehicle comfort overall is better, but remember, all this comes at a somewhat higher price, although still much less than the cost for the Navara LE. On the other hand, the Hardbody NP 300 is well proven, very reliable and certainly the workhorse of the two. If you need a vehicle that will carry loads and work hard during the week, but that also offers levels of comfort for weekend leisure work, the Hardbody is the better choice. I have tested both, and was impressed with both. The Navara is very comfortable, more powerful and a good long distance cruiser. Its downfall is that ground clearance is not adequate for a real bakkie. On the other hand the Hardbody offers perhaps the best value for money on the market, is tough as nails, but its downfall is a harsh ride and it is not as comfortable as the Navara. What you buy therefore depends on your budget and your needs. Work = Hardbody and lifestyle = Navara. These two vehicles are currently available motion at Longtom Nissan Lydenburg. Andre Coetzee

THE annual Golf day for the old age home, Rusoord will be held on Saturday the 18th August 2012. This is the only old age home in the Lydenburg, Steelpoort, Burgersfort, Sabie and Graskop areas. They currently house 71 people. Thinus Breedt decided last year to hold an annual Golf Day to raise funds for Rusoord. The much needed funds will be used for the day to day activities, and upgrading of their clinic. Donors and Sponsors are requested to join and to help raise the much needed money. Tees and Greens will be available for advertising @ R1200.00
Sponsorships for players will be available @ R1600.00 per four ball, including advertising on tees / greens. This will exclude caddies and golf carts. The format will be IPS. This year's SAHGCA (SA Hunting Game Conservation Association) camp will take place from 31 August to 2 September 2012. Promising a fun filled weekend with loads of adventures on a Bush Camp near Burgersfort. Die kamp is gerig op jong mense tussen die ouderdomme van 10-18 jaar. Die naweek sal gerig wees op die Junior Jagters se skietvernuf en oorlewingstegnieke.
The camp concentrates on all the facets of ethical hunting. This includes practical shooting, identification and survival techniques. New shooting exercises have been included to make it more fun and competitive for the Junior Hunters. The fee per child is R250-00 for the weekend. Wildevy eko roete klink opwindend! “DIE HARD” Eco 4x4 Marone bergroete. Die eerste 3km vind plaas deur die wildplaas waar die ou eko-roete in 2011 plaasgevind het. Vir die oplettendes in die voertuie is daar sowat 10 wilde diersoorte om te sien in die wildkamp, onder andere sluit dit Kameelperde, Blouwildebeeste, Koedoes, Bosbokke en Nyalas in. Die volgende 2km word daar deur ’n beesplaas gery aan die voet van die berg met goeie uitsig oor die vallei en plase. Die roete raak dan baie moeilik as daar sterk geklim word teen die pragtige Marone berg. Laestrek en ewenaarslot is beslis ’n vereiste om deel te neem aan die klas 3 roete, weens die moeilikheisgraad daarvan. Baie mooi uitsigte oor hele vallei, Burgersfort en Oostelike Platorand, maak hierdie ’n besondere ervaring. In die laaste kilometer voor die top van die berg bereik word, is daar baie klipbanke en moet stadig geklim word tot bo op die berg. Oor die berg se nek kom mens bo in die Marone berg en hier onder die groot bome sal daar gestop word vir middagete en om keel nat maak na die klim tot bo op die berg. Die uitsigte van hier is asemrowend en slegs bestem vir ’n paar gelukkiges wat deel is van die geleentheid. Om hierdie beperkte geleentheid mee te maak gaan slegs R1000 per voertuig kos. Dit sluit die gewilde Wildevy hemde vir bestuurder en mede bestuurder, asook ’n heerlike middagete in asook die gidsvoertuig wat die voertuie vergesel. Die eerste groep vertrek vanaf die Wildevy 4x4 baan stiptelik om 08h00 en die tweede groep om 10h00. Groepe ontmoet mekaar op die berg omdat daar is geen verbygaan plek op die roete is nie. Sodra die tweede groep bo op die berg arriveer, vertrek die eerste groep terug en behoort ongeveer 14h00 terug te wees by die Wildevy 4x4 baan. Na ’n blaaskans en middagete sal die tweede groep om 14h00 vertrek en ongeveer 16h00 by die Wildevy 4x4 baan terug te wees. Hier kan die res van die Wildevy 4x4 gesinsdag se aktiwiteite en atraksies meegemaak word.
