The Mines Rescue Services (Pty) Ltd officially opened its Steelpoort Rescue Station on Wednesday 25 July 2012.

Mines Rescue Services plays a very critical role in the South African mining industry's disaster prevention initiatives as the organisation responsible for mine rescues.

This state-of-the-art rescue station will provide rescue services to the mines in this area. The official opening of the Steelpoort Rescue Station was attended by both government and mining industry officials. The Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources, Mr Godfrey Oliphant attended the event.

Due to the horrific number of unwanted pets and indiscriminate breeding in the Lowveld, Dr. Des Stafford will be coming all the way from Johannesburg to bring pet owners this special offer. For two days only, you can have your cat or dog sterilized for free! Dr Stafford will be sterilizing 30 pets a day and this will benefit pet owners who do not have the monetary means to have their pets sterilized. One often finds pet owners have unwanted litters every six months and this leaves them with their hands in their hair. Turning to the SPCA and Veterinary Services is not always an option, since the pet owner may not fall under the “outreach” criteria. What to do? Bring your animal to the first ever Lowveld Spayathon. However, Karin Erasmus from Pro-Life Pet Rescue calls on the community to assist with the transport of animals, to help out with medication, a venue, blankets, refreshments and also volunteers. “We need about 40 volunteers to assist with all the various aspects of this project,” Erasmus said. The SABC, Thaba Chweu Local Municipality staff and Ligwalagwala FM listeners and the community at large donated clothing over the past months at SABC Mpumalanga Offices and Thaba Chweu Municipal offices. The donation was aimed at celebrating Mandela Day by helping the needy orphans. The theme is “Take Action, Inspire Change, and Make every day a Mandela Day”.

This year they brought this to the people of Thaba Chweu The event was blessed by the Acting Executive Mayor of Thaba Chweu, Cllr Patience Chima, Speaker of the Council, Cllr Suzan Magagula. Chief Whip Cllr Condry Mashego welcomed all the stakeholders, orphans and everyone who attended the event and applauded those who donated for the orphans. Thaba Chweu councilors also attended Mandela's birthday celebrations.

Op die ouderdom van 50 was sy nog nooit in die Kruger Wildtuin nie en het altyd gedink die wildtuin is vir die ‘khaki-draers’ en toeriste. Sy kon nog nooit verstaan wat is die groot ‘opgewondeheid’ daaroor om in die natuur te wees en een met die diere-heelal te wees nie.

Maar sy sê dit was magies. En hier sit ons met die Kruger Wildtuin op ons voorstoep. Net ’n paar ure van hier af en ons kyk al blasé na al die rooibokke. “want dis alweer rooibokke”.

Tot vandag toe 20 Julie 12 het ek nog nie 'n strokie ontvang wat sê my pakkie is daar nie.

Ek was bekommerd oor my pakkie en het navrae gedoen by Kaapstad en hierdie datums van hulle ontvang asook die nasionale spoedpos kantoor het dit bevestig dat die pakkie reeds op 29 Junie 12 in Lydenburg afgelaai is. Wat doen die poskantoor, want pakkies raak weg, hulle soek vir ure na 1, hulle skryf nie strokies uit vir pakkies wat afgehaal moet word nie. Dit is die hoeveelste keer dat ek pakkies soek waarvoor ek geen strokies ontvang het nie.

Ek het in Junie 'n strokie gekry vir 'n pakkie wat ek reeds in Mei afgehaal het. Wie is in beheer van die pakkie afdeling? Pakkies word teruggestuur want niemand haal dit af nie omdat die mense geen strokies ontvang nie. Duidelik kan die persoon wat daar werk nie die werk doen nie want dit is die 2de pakkie in 2 dae wat ek soek en wat lankal in Lydenburg gearriveer het en wat al vir 'n maand daar lê. Dit is 'n totale gemors by die pakkie afdeling en dinge raak net erger.

Corruption in traffic police Anonymous from Lydenburg writes: The buses with certain number plates operate from one bus company in Lydenburg without valid permits. Traffic officers from Nelspruit came here in May and were bribed. On Friday 29 June another team of traffic officers manned a road block, the same buses were blocked, two were fined and one was arrested, forcing the owner to pay a fine.

Ek kon myself nog nooit so ver kry om “Long Johns” te dra nie. Nee, as ’n man se broek moet uit, moet hy uit! Wat wel goed werk is die baie lang motorfietskouse, wat tot by jou knie kan optrek. Hulle plaaslik by Honda Wing gekry.

Ek is egter jammer vir die arme mense wat in HOP huise sonder plafonne bly. Waar armoede maak dat hulle nie eers ’n langmouhempie, trui of kombers kan bekostig nie.

Daarom is ek bly dat mense soos Longtom Nissan, Hyundai Lydenburg en baie andere hierdie mense in tye van nood help. Kom ondersteun hulle. Bring komberse en warm goed. Hierdie besighede sorg dat dit by die behoeftiges op die regte plekke uitkom. Kom ons vat hande en help hierdie arm mense in die koue winter. Ons dink aan julle almal en bid vir julle.

Ondersoek oor Konsentrasiekampe Michelle Boshoff 'n NAVRAAG vanaf Rudi Rossouw het Die Uwe onlangs gelei op 'n navorsingstog oor die bestaan van Konsentrasiekampe in Lydenburg. Daar is slegs bewyse in die geskiedenis dat daar Konsentrasiekampe in Balmoral en Barberton was (in hierdie omgewing), maar nie in Lydenburg self nie.

Die Suid-Afrikaanse Oorlog (soos dit nou polities korrek bekend staan) vanaf 18991902, is een van die swaarste tye wat SuidAfrika nog beleef het, anders as Die Groot Trek. (Die Suid-Afrikaanse Oorlog staan ook bekend as die Anglo-Boere Oorlog en die Tweede Vryheidsoorlog).

Rudi verfilm DVD's om die geskiedenis korrek weer te gee en besoek al die plekke om 'n beter prentjie vir Jan Publiek te skep. Rudi was voorheen 'n radio-omroeper by Radio Pretoria en het ook bekendheid verwerf as toeroperateur, veral treintoere.

Hy is steeds besig met die navorsing oor veral vroue en kinders in Konsentrasiekampe vir sy DVD's. Hy het by Die Uwe, Michelle Boshoff, vir raad aangeklop oor die geskiedenis van die omgewing maar is verwys na mnr. Hans Meyer en ander wat dit baie beter ken. Hy het ook by me. Elize Boshoff gaan kers opsteek. Sy het 'n intensiewe argief en boeke oor Lydenburg en die dorp se geskiedenis.

Daar is intussen vasgestel dat daar geen Konsentrasiekamp in Lydenburg self was nie maar wel 'n Deurgangs-Konsentrasiekamp waarvan die gevangenis na Balmoral en Barberton gestuur is. Lede van die publiek wat meer inligting kan verskaf of kan help met inligting is welkom om my te kontak.

Rudi het vroeër die week gesê dat hy bewyse het van 54 mense wat in die DeurgangsKonsentrasiekamp in Lydenburg dood is. Dit is volgens inligting by Jan Smuts se huis in Irene. Van my eie familie was ook in Konsentrasiekampe.

Die geskiedenis van hierdie oorlog laat 'n wrang smaak in baie mense se monde maar mense soos Rudi poog dat dit nie verlore gaan nie.

Die hele SA span wat na die 16de ‘World Championships of Performing Arts” in Hollywood, California gegaan het.

Saskhia Viljoen van Lydenburg en graad 11 leerling te HTS Middelburg is een van die 6 lede van die HTS Dansgroep wat Suid Afrika gaan verteenwoordig het tydens die 16de jaarlikse "World Championships Of Performing Arts" in Hollywood, California. Sy het 4 Silwer medaljes in vier afsonderlikke kategorie gewen - Jazz, Ethnic / Folkloric, Hip Hop / Funk en Open. Daar was 51 lande wat deelgeneem het.

Vir die kinders is daar Hamburgers teen R15 en twee springkastele om hulle besig te hou terwyl pa en ma kuier. Onthou net om jou eie eetgerei saam te bring Saterdag 28 Julie begin die dag om 7:00 met 'n heerlike boereontbyt teen R35. Teen 8:30 begin die verkope by die stalletjies.

Die jong vroutjies het al in Meimaand begin opdragte uitdeel aan jonges, middeljariges en oues van dae oor alles wat hulle op die handwerktafel wil hê. En is daar 'n verskeidenheid goed!! Kinders én grootmense sal daar ietsie uitsnuffel wat hulle net móét hê. Selfs die lekkergoedtafel is 'n belewenis. Lekkers kom nie sommer net in pakkies nie. Nee, jy kry dit in blikkies, visvangnette, kouse, blikbekers en so meer.

En wat is 'n basaar nou sonder pannekoek, kerrie en rys, vetkoek, nagereg en koeke? Kom koop gerus sodat jy die middag rustig voor die TV kan sit en peusel. Daar gaan weer 'n lorrievrag vrugte en groente van so ver as Tzaneen en Hoedspruit wees. Daar sal ook vars plaasmelk te koop wees.

Soos altyd is die vleistafel 'n groot aantrekkingskrag. Vroeg in Julie is die eerste 10 Blesbokke geskiet en so begin die vleisverwerking.

Heerlike wildsosaties van net die beste en sagste snitte is gemaak.

On Saturday 20th July 2012 Entheos Christian School held their Interhouse Athletics. A huge thank you to Laerskool Lydenburg for the use of their facilities. The Red and Blue teams had much fun and competition during the day for top spot in the Spirit Trophy and the Athletics Trophy. At the end of the day the Red team won both the Trophies but it was clear that Entheos as a school won the day together as team spirit showed in everything they did. To the parents who came as officials and supporters – thank you! To the children and staff who participated and came to support – thank you.

uring the recent graduation ceremony for community ABET learners, held at Two Rivers Platinum Mine in Steelpoort, Limpopo, Mr Adriaan de Beer, the Business Leader of this profitable mine, was proud to honour and award the first student to achieve a 100% pass rate at all the levels.

Mr.Judah Mabilo, from one of the Two River's core communities, Kalkfontein, was assessed to be functionally illiterate when he joined the Mine in 2006. He worked as a general worker.

His determination to succeed in life, inspired him to take advantage of the Two Rivers Platinum's ABET programme and he enrolled for ABET level 1 in 2010, where he out-performed his peers. “I am proud to be at Two Rivers because Two Rivers gave me many opportunities and now as we speak they have enrolled me on a leadership course. I am doing a hard-rock breaking certificate course at Bathopele Mine, in Rustenburg. To me this is a privilege I cannot misuse. After 3 to 4 years I want to be a Mine Overseer at Two Rivers and I will work hard to achieve this,” said a proud Mr Mabilo.

Over the years, as attested in its close-up SLP report, Two Rivers have demonstrated that, indeed it is possible to enjoy unlimited benefits if you invest in your human capital. Over 480 employees and community members have benefitted from its ABET programme and this has proved popular within both its employees and communities within which it operates. In the past financial year Two Rivers has spent R1,290,000 on ABET only.

ON the 10th of July 2012, the production department of Two Rivers Platinum's Concentrator Plant, came together to celebrate their safety milestone of 1000 Injury Free Days. This is an exceptional achievement given that these employees also work under challenging circumstances i.e. extended working hours (12 hour rotational shifts), moving machinery, chemical processes, breakdowns, production pressure, etc. that can have a negative impact on their safety performance if they don't remain focused and committed.

Plant Superintendent, Mr. Johan Breedt said this achievement is a demonstration of their team effort and the caliber of both employees and supervisors in conducting all their tasks safely. He believes that all injuries can be prevented through e f f e c t i v e communication, proactive hazard identification, thorough risk assessments and by doing the job right the first time. His passion and drive towards safety is shared by safety records. The Business Leader, Mr. Adriaan de Beer (Far Right) congratulated the Production Department on his team and evident their great achievement. He said that it is only through the continuation of a zero mindset towards injuries, prevention of in their excellent to reoccurrences and compliance to safety standards and rules that they will continue on their road of Safety Excellence.

earners aged between 6 and 17 years from the neighbouring schools became the latest beneficiaries from the Two Rivers Platinum's Social Labour Plan funding commitments. At the recent hand-over ceremony facilitated by UzenzeleWena Home-based Care Centre based in Mashishing, Lydenburg and ThabaChweu Municipality, 200 identified orphans and vulnerable children received pairs of school shoes from the representatives of the Mine as part of its Each One Adopt One initiative and as their gift towards Nelson Mandela's birthday.

The historic event took place at Marambane Primary school was attended by learners from Marambane, Lesodi and Mashishing Schools as well as politicians and officials from the local department of education and health and social development services. “The selflessness and the unconditional love for children as well as the passionate presentation made to us by both, Cllr Mashigo from ThabaChweu Municipality and Mrs Madonsela from UzenzeleWena Home-based Care Centre, inspired us to remember Madiba'a love for children and his hope for the country's future, hence our donation for school

shoes to these most deserving beneficiaries, especially in this cold winter period”, said Bethrum Dzonzi, the Public and Corporate Affairs Manager at Two Rivers Platinum Mine.

UzenzeleWena , which depends on donations and support from individuals and private organizations works very closely with schools, churches and the local government to identify poor families, child-headed families, vulnerable children and women and cater for their basic needs. They provide meals for deserving learners twice a day and over weekends. The level of poverty and high HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in our communities has become our biggest challenge and thanks to business partners such as Two Rivers Platinum Mine who always respond positively whenever approached for assistance. This challenge will be overcome. We challenge the other Mines in our area to also open their hearts and hands. Today's contribution from Two Rivers Platinum is just the tip of the ice-berg, ” said Cllr Mashigo of ThabaChweu Municipality.

Wildevy eko roete klink opwindend!

“DIE HARD” Eco 4x4 Marone bergroete. Die eerste 3km vind plaas deur die wildplaas waar die ou eko-roete in 2011 plaasgevind het. Vir die oplettendes in die voertuie is daar sowat 10 wilde diersoorte om te sien in die wildkamp, onder andere sluit dit Kameelperde, Blouwildebeeste, Koedoes, Bosbokke en Nyalas in.

Die volgende 2km word daar deur 'n beesplaas gery aan die voet van die berg met goeie uitsig oor die vallei en plase. Die roete raak dan baie moeilik as daar sterk geklim word teen die pragtige Marone berg. Laestrek en ewenaarslot is beslis 'n vereiste om deel te neem aan die klas 3 roete, weens die moeilikheisgraad daarvan.

Baie mooi uitsigte oor hele vallei, Burgersfort en Oostelike Platorand, maak hierdie 'n besondere ervaring. In die laaste kilometer voor die top van die berg bereik word, is daar baie klipbanke en moet stadig geklim word tot bo op die berg.

Oor die berg se nek kom mens bo in die Marone berg en hier onder die groot bome sal daar gestop word vir middagete en

Sodra die tweede groep bo op die berg arriveer, vertrek die eerste groep terug en behoort ongeveer 14h00 terug te wees by die Wildevy 4x4 baan.

Na 'n blaaskans en middagete sal die tweede groep om 14h00 vertrek en ongeveer 16h00 by die Wildevy 4x4 baan terug te wees. Two River Platinum Mine Mandela Day – OVC

I

n line with its principles and philosophy of giving and caring, TRP was humbled by the contribution Dr Nelson Mandela made to humanity and it was therefore only fitting for it to join the world on his birthday to celebrate and demonstrate its commitment to its communities by contributing 7 wheelchairs to deserving beneficiaries around Mashishing.

Trees for Lelievlei The Fisheries (Visserye - MTPA) in Lydenburg donated trees to the Lelievlei Project. They were delivered on Mandela Day as part of his heritage to give to others.

Thank you for taking part in this initiative ladies.

One of the beneficiaries, Zakhele Shabangu, aged 7 years never had a wheelchair since birth. His mother had to carry him throughout the day. As a result, his parents could not register him with any educational institution.

We therefore happy that with our contribution he may now be able to move around and his life will improve.

Me. Ellie Janse Van Rensburg, VF+ Waarnemende Leier oorhandig ’n geskenk aan met Teresa Meyer. Teresa is ’n voorbeeld vir ander en is by die Lelievlei Woonkamp aangewys as die beste leier. Dit het saamgeval met die VF+ Mandela Dag-inisiatief.

Me. Hendrien Landsberg van Scissor Zone offer twee keer per maand haar tyd op om inwoners van Lelievlei se hare verniet te sny. Sy het spesiaal vir Mandela Dag weer haar dienste aangebied en ook sommer mnr. Hans Maliepaard, kampbestuurder, se hare gesny.

Entheos Christian School participated in the Mandela Day 67 minutes of Community Service event. Children from Pre-School to Gr 12 made an effort to serve our local community in some way. From pushing trolleys to collecting trash from the side of the roads, cleaning out dog kennels and giving flowers to local businesses to thank them for their efforts, and visiting hospital patients, our children pulled up their sleeves and did something for nothing!

New minivan for SA

IT has been confirmed. A few weeks ago it was revealed that Ford's Transit would be coming to South Africa next year and now Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has issued a press release stating that it will start contesting the local people-moving and goods-hauling segments when the Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom arrive here in the first quarter of 2013.

Built in Kocaeli, Turkey, the Transit and Tourneo Custom have been styled with Ford’s latest kinetic design language, keeping the two in line with the Blue Oval’s passenger vehicle line. Both models will also be made available in long and short wheelbase configurations.

The modern design continues inside with modern touches like multiple storage options and driver-focused layouts.

The 2,2-litre Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel powerplant that also does service in the Ranger pick-up, will power both models, but it may be in a different state of tune than the 110 kW/375 Nm unit in the Ranger.

Ons toets die nuwe Hyundai i30 ONS het so ’n jaar of wat gelede die “ou” Hyundai i30 getoets. Hierdie was ’n groot, ruim motor en ons was beïndruk. Maar nou is die splinternuwe i30 hier in 1.6 handrat, 1.6 outomaties en 1.8 handrat. Daar is nie ’n intreemodel nie. Al drie is ten volle gelaai met elke gerief en veiligheidskenmerk waaraan jy kan dink.

Ons toetsmotor was die 1.6 handrat. Met die eerste oogopslag is hierdie ’n Elantra (motor van die jaar 2012), maar met ’n luikrug.

In terme van toerusting is alles daar. Lugsakke rondom. Klankstelsel met radio / CD met iPod en USB in. Goeie gehalte klank. Ekstra 12V sok op die voorste paneel en nog ’n 12V sok in die bagasieruim vir ’n yskassie of DVD / rekenaarspeelgoed vir die kinders. Die paneelkissie is verkoel. Die sentrale konsole se deksel kan vorentoe en agtertoe skuif om ’n lekker armrus te vorm. Elektriese ruite op al 4 vensters met outo funksie vir die bestuurder.

Verhitte, elektriese spieëls wat kan invou. Ligte verstelbaar in die kajuit.

Mikrofoon in die dak bokant die bestuurder en Bloutand vir jou foon op die stuurwiel. Kontroles vir die klank, “cruise control”, ritrekenaar en stuursensitiwiteit is op die stuurwiel. Die stuursensitiwiteit kan gestel word tussen “comfort” (baie kraghulp en lig in die dorp), “normal” en “sport” (lekker swaar en minder direk vir die oop pad en die bergpasse). Die stuurwiel is verstelbaar vir hoogte en diepte. Daar is smukspieëls vir beide persone voor met liggies en plek vir petrolkaarte en bekerhouers in al die deure en op die middelkonsole. Outomatiese dubbelsone klimaatbeheer is standaard. Sitplekke is uiters gerieflik en in duursame tweekleure afgewerk. Leer is addisioneel beskikbaar op die 1.6 en standaard op 1.8 en sitplekke het hope beenruimte voor en agter en die bagasiebak is besonder groot vir ’n luikrug en is toegerus met ’n rekbare net om bagasie vas te hou.

Daar is hakies vir jou inkopiesakke in die bagasieruim.

Die ritrekenaar wys gemiddelde snelheid, brandstofverbruik, afstand na leeg en twee ritmeters. Hitte en brandstofmeters is digitaal en die blou instrumentbeligting is baie mooi.

Die hangkonsole onder die paneelbord is aan die kante uitgeny amper soos die van Volvo. Die pedale het ’n allooi voorkoms.

Op die pad is die i30 net so ’n juweel. Die gewillige 1.6 maak 96 kW en 157 Nm se wringkrag. Op die 1 800 is die syfers onderskeidelik 110 kW en 178 Nm. Die Hyundai loop lekker. In sesde rat draai die enjin sowat 4 000 omwntelinge teen 150 km / u.

Rigtingvastheid en stabiliteit het veral beïndruk. Teen 190 is daar geen drama nie en sit die motor selfs op ’n ongelyk pad. Skyfremme op al vier wiele is baie goed.

Daar is ABS met EBD, stabiliteitsbeheer en traksiebeheer (VSM en ESP). Ratskakeling is seepglad en versnelling goed. Parkeersensors is standaard.

Die i30 kom met ’n 150 000 km / 5 jaar waarborg en ’n 5 jaar / 90 000 km diensplan.

Renault Duster destined for SA RENAULT announced that it would bring its cut-price Renault Duster crossover / SUV to South Africa within the next six months.

The Duster is sold in Europe with the Dacia badge (as is the Sandero), but recently went into production in India in right-hand drive form as a Renault, and has now been confirmed for South African introduction. Local models will be sourced from India.

In a conversation with CAR, outgoing Renault SA chief Xavier Gobille revealed that the Duster will be sold in South Africa in petrol and diesel forms, and with the option of two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. He also added that the price would be, "a killer for the competition".

Though unconfirmed, we suspect the Duster will reach South Africa in 1,6-litre petrol and 1,5-litre turbodiesel variants. No automatic version will be offered. We expect all local models to feature five-speed manual transmissions.

The Duster is an affordable crossover vehicle, likely to be priced well below R200 000. Carmag.co.za

Nurburgring files for insolvency THE FAMOUS 'RING: The Nurburgring is one of the world's most testing racetracks - but its financial future is in the balance.

FRANKFURT, Germany - The owner of the Nurburgring race track is to file for insolvency, the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate has announced. It blamed the European Commission for taking too long to approve a rescue package.

Nuerburgring GmbH, 90%t owned by the state, ran into financial trouble amid a dispute with the track's operator over lease fees and Rhineland-Palatinate had sought to restructure the company with the help of bridging finance. "But at the end of last week, the commission indicated that it may not reach a positive decision on the application for aid before July 30," by which time Nurburgring GmbH will be unable to pay its bills, the state said.

The track hosts the German F1 GP every two years, alternating with Hockenheim, and is due to stage the race in 2013 but its future has appeared uncertain due to the dispute with the track operator over lease fees. Rhineland-Palatinate - under pressure to make the track pay after pouring millions of euros into a racing-themed amusement park there - said earlier in 2012 that it was cancelling its lease with NAG, just as the company held talks with F1's chief Bernie Ecclestone over a deal to host the 2013 GP. However NAG said on Wednesday it had agreed on a concept with Ecclestone and was seeking to win commitments for the annual rock festival Rock am Ring and the ADAC Truck GP for coming years. SA’s beaches still out of bounds IN 2002 the government infuriated off-road enthusiasts by implementing a ban on driving on South Africa's beaches.

At the time, the ban added negative connotations to 4x4 owners by creating the impression they were scoundrels. Since then the ban has remained in effect, though 4x4 clubs around SA have appealed many times.

A ban on driving vehicles on beaches will not be reconsidered, says water and environmental affairs minister Edna Molewa. In response to questions by the Democratic Alliance, Molewa said: "Neither the prohibition nor the restriction of the recreational use of vehicles is being reconsidered due to the positive impact it is having on the ecology of the South African coastal zone."

Heating your home effectively GIVEN the increasing costs of living and the fact that electricity is still in short supply, this winter has proven a particularly onerous one for all.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that, in the main, South African homes are not built for winter.

The majority of South African homes feature tiled floors, airy balconies and large windows which keep these properties cool in summer. Unfortunately, these design features work against them in winter and make heating such homes difficult.

In anticipation of the coming crunch, Eskom recently commissioned an energy efficiency expert to calculate the energy and costs entailed in heating an average-size room to 18ºC and what it takes to keep this temperature constant for one month. According to Eskom, the study showed that the cost of heating a room from 11ºC to 18ºC was significantly more than maintaining a constant temperature.

The study also showed that electricity is still the most effective heating option.

The following calculations are based on an assumed electricity price of 84c/KWh and LPG at 15R/Kg to achieve the same room heating effect. (Note that electricity in Lydenburg is more expensive).

Heating the room: - with electricity:R43.44 - gas: R60.97 • Maintaining the room’s temperature for 24 hours: - with electricity:R5.91 - with gas: R8.29 • Heating and maintaining the room temperature for 30 days: - with electricity: R220.62 - with gas: R309.66 Eskom also asked energy experts to ascertain which heating options are the most energy efficient.

Apparently, underfloor heating is the most ineffective way to heat a home. This is due to the fact that the floor has to be heated before the temperature of the room can be influenced. Even after this occurs, the warm air generated generally just continues to rise and is lost into ceilings unless they are insulated.

Wall-mounted heaters aren’t much better it seems. Wall-mounted heaters are generally quite small, which means that they have to be left on for a long time to make any impact. Furthermore, some of the heat these heaters generate is lost as it radiates into a wall’s bricks. Eskom found that gas heaters are not necessarily more effective than electric heaters but given the high cost of bottled gas, electric heating is still cheaper in South Africa. The main advantage of gas heaters is that they radiate heat almost immediately.

As far as increased comfort, cost and power usage goes, the most effective heating option are infrared heaters like those often used in restaurants. These heaters are the most energy effective because they heat up objects and not the air. All things considered, Eskom advocates either oil heaters or two kilowatt fan heaters both of which feature thermostats. These two types of heaters consume around the same amount of electricity to heat a room. However, both feature different advantages and disadvantages.

Oil heaters are most effective in contained spaces such as a single room. Open plan living areas are simply too big for an oil heater to make a real impact. They also take longer and a fair amount of energy to heat up. Fan heaters provide heat and comfort immediately and they can be directed to wherever the hot air is needed most. Most fan heaters now also come with a small container which can be filled with water to prevent the air in the room from drying out.

Heating hints and tips: • Insulation is the single most important factor when it comes to heating a home. An insulated room requires 51 percent less energy than an un-insulated room. Insulating your home’s ceiling is the simplest and most effective way to prevent the warm air generated by heaters from escaping.

Bianca van Heerden en Tacita Black is tydens die provinsiale Landsdienskamp op 23-27 Junie 2012 te Bayete kampterrein in Nylsroom uit 250 leerders gekies vir die Landsdiens se nasionale kamp. Die kamp vind plaas tydens die September vakansie. Daar is 23 dogters en 13 seuns uit 20 skole gekies om hierdie opwindende kamp in die Oos-Kaap te Oudtshoorn by te woon. Baie geluk aan hierdie twee staatmaker landsdienslede.

Heavy dust puts Jam Burger in serious accident

Deon arrived at the accident scene to find Jam receiving medical attention and together with the rescue crew escorted him to the awaiting ambulance. Jam having suffered serious injuries to his right arm was rushed to the Wilgers hospital in Pretoria where he underwent surgery.

His second operation is scheduled for this week.

His family and friends wish him a speedy recovery. It won't be long and Jam will be back on the podium where he belongs.
