Important statistics about the crime in Mpumalanga M a decrease in this category in the financial year under review. As a result, we recorded an increase of 3.2%. We have recorded an increase in burglary business at (4.9%); burglary residential at (0.7%); theft out of or from motor vehicles at (11.7%); and stock theft at (0.2%).

We did, however manage to secure a decrease r

in theft of motor vehicles and motor cycles at (0.8%) in the year under review.

Other serious crimes (Attempts Included) Three categories of crimes are grouped together which includes shoplifting, other thefts, and commercial crimes.

In the financial year under review, we recorded a total decrease of 1.1%. We have recorded a decrease in shoplifting, and other thefts at (11.8% and 3.8%) respectively whilst an increase of (21.1%) recorded for commercial crimes.

Crimes heavily dependent on police action for detection: This category of crime clearly shows how our men and women in blue are committed in ensuring the safety of our communities. It is through their hard work and dedication, their selfless effort in rooting out crime and its related activities. Three categories of crimes are grouped together which includes illegal possession of fire arms and ammunition, drug related crimes, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

We recorded a total massive increase of 34.2%. We have witnessed a major increase in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition at (29.6%); drug related crimes at (30.7%); and driving under the influence of alcohol at (39.3%).

Ladies and gentlemen, once more allow me to share with you other good news regarding to the decrease in crime we have recorded in the financial year 2011/12. We have recorded the following decreases: carjacking (13.6%); Truck hijacking (8.6%); street robbery (6.7%).

It is however regrettable that we also recorded the following increases: business robbery (25.6%); house robbery (13.8%); and robbery of cash in transit (42.9%).

In terms of bank robbery, we have remained in the same place as we have neither increased nor decreased. Thus

we are at zero %.

Our records indicate that, in terms of the regional contribution to serious crimes in the province, Nkangala region is leading with (40%) followed by Ehlanzeni and Gert-Sibande regions with (34% and 26%) respectively.

We have taken a resolution as Mpumalanga Province to focus on the 25 identified police stations which contribute immensely in our crime statistics. We hope this strategy will help us in fighting crime in our beautiful province of the rising sun. We have also committed ourselves to provide the necessary support to our dedicated members in rendering their duties effectively.

As I close, I urge you to always remember that crime takes place within our communities and as members of the public we are aware of that. I therefore encourage every one of us, including the media to be whistleblowers against crime and report crime at all times.

As communities, we should refrain from creating a market for stolen goods in our areas. We must report every one who try to sell us “idulas�.

In fighting crime, we must do more and talk less. Let us be inspired by one Jose' Marti, a Cuban revolutionary, poet and lawyer, who said, quote: 'Other famous men, those of much talk and few deeds, soon evaporate.

Action is the dignity of greatness.

It may be possible to speed or to hinder them, but impossible to stop them.� The MEC thanked the Members of the Criminal Justice Cluster for their participation in crime prevention and combating in the province, and the role played by the police under the leadership of Lieutenant General Thulani Ntobela to steer the ship towards the right direction.

EC Vusi Shongwe remarked during the briefing on Provincial Crime Statistics that they have been hard at work to give meaning to the program of government and to make the people of Mpumalanga feel safe. The crime statistics for the period between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012 were recently a point of concern.

The report was released earlier this month. This is the report in relation to Mpumalanga as given by MEC Shongwe: Contact crimes (Crimes against a person) Seven categories of serious crimes are grouped together as contact crimes which include murder, attempted murder, sexual offenses, assault with an intention to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), assault common, aggravated robbery and common robbery. In the financial year under review, we recorded a total decrease of 7.0%. We have witnessed a major decrease in assault common at (10.4%); assault GBH at (9.1%); sexual offences at (7.9%); common robbery, attempted included at (4.7%); and attempted murder at (5.7%).

We are however concerned about the increase of murder and robbery aggravated. We assure you that we will not rest until we drastically reduce this crime in our province. We will mobilise all our resources and engage our communities, all social security agencies, and all our stakeholders to work together to squeeze this contact crimes to zero. Murder and robbery aggravated, ladies and gentlemen have increased by 1.0% and 3.1% respectively.

Contact related crimes Two categories of crimes are grouped together as contact related crimes which refers to malicious damage to property, and arson. In the financial year under review, we recorded a total decrease of 9.0%. We have witnessed a major decrease in the two crimes at (8.5% and 17.3%) respectively.

Property Related Crimes (Attempts Included) Five categories of property related crimes are grouped together which refers to burglary business, burglary residential, theft of motor vehicle and motor cycles, theft out of or from motor vehicles, and stock theft.

Dr. David Huchzermeyer reported that the Sterkspruit Veterinary Clinic’s sign was vandalised this past weekend. They found that the light box had been smashed in during the night. The culprits used a heavy earth filled flower pot containing succulents. The pot was smashed, the succulents left in and on the light box.

Residents are urged to contact the police if they have more information as there was apparently another incident in De Beer Street at a bank during the same evening.

National strike reaches the local mines A

Bokoni Platinum Mine outside Burgersfort in Limpopo, has sent notices of dismissal to about four thousand workers, who've been on a week-long unprotected strike. NG Gemeente Witbank gee groot aan Lelievlei

Op Woensdag 3 Oktober het ds. Peet Boshoff en lidmate van NG Kerk Witbank Lelievlei besoek. ’n Baie groot skenking is gedoen. Groente, klere, skoolbenodighede, kruideniersware, lanterns, hout-gereedskap en tweeplaatstowe is geskenk.

Verder is daar ook bome, toiletbenodighede en sakrekenaars geskenk. Die gemeentelede het gesellig saam met die inwoners gekuier. Frik Rousseau, die Direkteur van Lelievlei het in sy toespraak die gemeente hartlik bedank en genoem dat die inwoners die skenkings baie waardeer. CMR Lydenburg is geleë in Burgerstr 15. In 2009 het CMR 'n rekenaarvaardigheidsprojek geloods. Sedertdien is talle studente reeds suksesvol opgelei in basiese rekenaarvaardigheid. Hierdie kursus beloop opleiding vir 'n tydperk van 4 weke. Een van die hoof doelstellings van hierdie projek is om minderbevoorregtes te help om die basiese rekenaarvaardigheidsopleiding te ondergaan ten einde hulle in staat te stel om werk te kry. Verster’s Timber Havens het Wenakker se mense die afgelope ruk gehelp met die herstel van die gebou. Dit is ’n baie ou gebou en verrotting en lekkasies het veroorsaak dat Verster’s Timber Havens Wenakker te hulp gesnel het. MR. Jan Hendrik Kügel was a well-known business man and respected resident of Lydenburg since 1971. He owned the construction company Korn Steel since 1975. The Kügel family would like to express their gratitude to the following people and businesses: Very dear friends who were with Jean and stayed with her during and after Jan’s passing until her family arrived later that night. Dr. Peet Visser’s support to the family. To all who phoned, visited, sent flowers and food and helped with the arrangements at the funeral.

Between Lydenburg and Luxembourg A group of learners from High School Lydenburg took part in a book project by the Luxembourg Ministry of Art earlier this year. They took photos of everyday life at home and at school.

In return, learners from the Lycée Classique D’Echternach school in Luxembourg took photos of their life and it was compared in a book of photos.

The book clearly shows the interesting difference between third world (South African, Lydenburg) life and first world, Luxembourg, life.

The project was organised by Mr Joseph Tomassini from Luxembourg.

In his intro to the book Mr Octavie Modert, the Ministre De La Culture of Luxembourg quoted: “You don’t take a photograph, you make it” by photographer Anzel Adams (19021982).

Mr Octavi Modert wrote: “On the one hand, the students make the pictures, they do not only shed light onto a particular aspect of their daily life, their way to school, but also do so from their own particular viewpoint. And be it in South Africa or in Luxembourg or elsewhere, there is a lesson always good to learn, notably by looking at these impressive photographs by looking at them twice and maybe from different angels, not only taking them in, but letting their complicity and solidarity grow on us and making it happen.”

Mr Joseph Tomassini visited Lydenburg earlier this year to donate cameras to the school for the children to use and to tell them more about this project. On the school’s side the project was organised by Mrs Carina Venter, a teacher. Different sponsors in Luxembourg played a role in this project. The children in both countries now have the ‘catalogues’ or books to show off their beautiful photos. ~ Michelle Boshoff

In die privaatheid van my kamer voor my verslankende spieël keur ek die een onvanpaste poging na die ander af, totdat ek Die Een oor my kop trek. Die middernagblou gewaad val sag soos ’n asemteug oor my kop, waterval oor my rondings en poel om my voete op die vloer.

Ek lyk soos ’n Italiaanse silwerdoekgodin wat sopas uit ’n Bertolini-fontein verrys het ... met 'n ekstra oe-la-la of twee om die heupe!

Ek bekyk myself vanuit die ooste en die weste, die noorde en die suide. Verstel hier, trek daar. Een week. Hoe gaan ek jou regruk in een week, Lyf? dink ek by myself.

Een week is 'n bietjie min vir Ouma se dieet.

Sy't geglo ’n dame eet nét wat sy wil, maar uit ’n kleinbordjie. Ek voeg nog ’n stipulasie by: van nou af eet ek net wat in ’n kleinbordjie bedien kan word terwyl ek sit by ’n tafel. Dis al daardie “drive thru”-

besoeke aan die kombuis wat daardie ekstra sensualiteit aan my heupe verleen!

Ek draai nog eenmaal van die ooste na die weste en onthou daardie kurwetjie as die een wat hardnekkig bly sit het na my tweede se geboorte. Ek kan nie help om te glimlag nie. Ek is lief vir jou Lyf, dink ek. Jy was tot nou toe goed vir hierdie gees. Jy verdien beter: agt glase water per dag, ’n gebalanseerde ontbyt. Ten minste twee van Ingrid en Monica se pilatesklasse per week van nou af vir jou.

Vir ’n laaste keer stryk ek die sagte materiaal oor my heupe en versit die satynlint om my middel. Ek sweef kop omhoog soos ’n supermodel na manlief in die sitkamer. “Jis, is dit nie bietjie duur nie?” sê hy oplaas na stille betragting. Hino racing truck ready for the next Dakar HINO Team Sugawara, the very successful combination that continues to build an enviable record in the gruelling Dakar Rally, is making very good progress with developing its latest racing truck as it prepares for the 2013 event in South America.

The team recently gave the all-new Hino racing truck a successful debut in the Mongolia Rally, finishing as the highest placed truck and 10th overall, beaten only by five motorcycles and four cars - a Toyota FJ Cruiser and three Mitsubishi Evos.

This year the Mongolia Rally, which Hino traditionally uses to test its vehicles before the Dakar Rally, proved a bigger than usual challenge. Besides the extreme differences in daytime temperature one always encounters in Mongolia, there was record-breaking rainfall, not seen in decades, which turned large areas of the Gobi Desert into marshes and rivers. The upshot was the cancellation of three of the seven timed special stages. There were 39 finishers out of an original field of 62.

The team used the Mongolia Rally to focus on new developments on the latest racing truck, most importantly checking the reliability of the electronically controlled common rail fuel injection system which was fitted to a Hino racing truck for the first time.

“None of our concerns about possible engine problems materialised and we were also able to test changes we had made to the braking and suspension systems, as well as the design of the rear body,” said driver Teruhito Sugawara.

“The team made a change from an engine-driven fan to an electric one and we were delighted that cooling proved more than adequate. I believe the longer span leaf springs and greater chassis frame rigidity helped improve steering response and handling, as well as making the ride more comfortable. The new Brembo disc brake system used for the Mongolia Rally exceeded our expectations,” said the son of team founder Yoshimasa Sugawara, who is now set to compete in his 15th Dakar Rally.

Yoshimasa Sugawara, the director of Hino Team Sugawara, who is now 71 years old and will again drive a Hino in the 2013 Dakar Rally, honed his driving skills in the Mongolia Rally driving a Suzuki Jimny. He won the class despite being submerged for the first time in his very long racing career due to rising water in the desert.

Hino, which was the first Japanese truck maker to start competing in the Dakar Rally, in 1991 and still the only one taking part regularly, has finished each of the events it contested.

This excluded the 2008 Dakar Rally in Africa, which was cancelled at the last minute due to terrorist threats.

This year the Hino 500 of Teruhito Sugawara finished ninth overall and notched up the team's third consecutive victory in the category for trucks with engines of less than 10-litres capacity. The Hino 500 Series has now won the under 10-litre engine capacity class 12 times in the 13 races where this category has been contested since this class was first introduced in 1996.

The team will be entering two four-wheel drive Hino 500 trucks in the 2013 Dakar Rally which starts in Lima, Peru, on January 5 and traverses parts of Argentina before heading into Chile and the finish on January 20 in Santiago.

The one racing Hino, to be crewed by Teruhito Sugawara and Suwa Hiromichi, is the latest version tested in the Mongolia Rally and the second truck is an upgraded version of one of the trucks that took part in the 2012 Dakar Rally. It will be driven

by Yoshimasa Sugawara, who holds the record for the most consecutive finishes in the Dakar Rally on 21. He has contested this event 31 times, starting on a motorcycle in 1983 before racing cars and finally switching to Hino trucks in 1991.

For the first time in its 21-year history of competing in the Dakar Rally the Hino team will use an engine with electronically controlled fuel injection to enhance torque in the mid to low ranges, which is crucial when traversing sand dunes and very rough terrain.

The team has been wary of using electronic fuel injection as it has seen a number of rival trucks stopped on the Dakar with problems caused by limiters that are safety devices set to trigger when there are problems with the electronics. However, after the successful test in Mongolia the team is confident its system will be reliable.

brakes are now huge discs with four-pot Brembo callipers. Once again the Mongolia Rally proved an ideal proving ground to show the benefits and reliability of these systems.

The latest truck runs on forged two-piece aluminium wheels made by the American company Hutchinson. This achieves a 10kg reduction in weight per wheel compared to the previous steel wheels.

The wheels continue to be equipped with central tyre inflation and deflation system which allows the crew to adjust air pressure in the tyre to suit the road surfaces and terrain.

All these modifications have made the new Hino much faster and this required increased stability which has been achieved by changing the suspension and strengthening the chassis.

The team did extensive testing in Japan before tackling the Mongolia Rally and is now doing fine-tuning and further testing before the two Hino Team Sugawara trucks are shipped to South America for the 2013 Dakar Rally. By email

Landrover - Defender of the African Wild Dog Land Rover - Defender of Wild Dogs While Rhino poaching dominates South Africa’s media, the plight of the African Wild Dog is not as well documented. Wild Dogs are South Africa's most threatened carnivore with less than 450 of the so-called 'painted dogs' remaining in South Africa.

Land Rover South Africa has supported the African Wild Dog through its partnership with the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and its Carnivore Conservation Programme since 2001.

Land Rover sponsors the EWT with a Defender 110 Double Cab and a Defender 130 Double Cab. The vehicles are used by the EWT field workers and stationed at the Kruger National Park and the Hluluwe uMfolozi Park respectively. They are used for ongoing scientific research in the generic mapping and population management of various Wild Dog populations, and the movement of animals to suitable areas where prey is freely available and there is less of a need to prey on farm animals.

Managing the African Wild Dog population in South Africa is particularly complex as a result of their social dynamics and the significant threat posed by habitat fragmentation, continued persecution in some areas of South Africa, snaring and vehicle strikes.

“There are approximately 5 500 free-ranging African Wild Dogs left in Africa. They have disappeared from at least 25 countries during the past 50 years. With fewer than 450 free ranging African Wild Dogs left in South Africa it is the country's rarest carnivore,” says Brendan Whittington-Jones of the EWT. Women prefer the Honda Civic THE Honda Civic has received an award from the Women’s World Car of the Year committee.

The award is divided into four categories; family car, luxury car, sports car and economy car. The Civic was chosen as the winner for the economy car category with second and third places going to the Volkswagen Up and Ford Fiesta respectively.

The Honda Civic was selected from an initial entry list of 300 cars which were nominated by 20 women judges from 11 countries around the world.

The judging panel for the Women’s Car of the Year assessed the Civic according to the criteria women consider when buying a car that include safety, value-for-money, aesthetic appearance, storage space, ease-of-driving, colour, sex appeal, environmental footprint and child friendliness.

Henny Hemmes and Sandy Myhre, two members of the judging panel, presented the award to Toshiaki Konaka, director of Honda Motor Europe car division, at the 2012 Paris auto show.

On receiving the award, Konaka, said: "This award highlights the unique exterior styling and practical interior that are synonymous with the Civic model."

equivalent of coming to a complete stop from 96km/h in one second – what most people would call an average car crash. Then all I have to do is control three engines and keep it going in a straight line.”

Up to a speed of 563km/h, it will be powered by a Eurofighter jet engine. A Cosworth V8 racing car engine is there to pump peroxide fuel into the rocket. A catalyst in the rocket then causes a chemical reaction which generates a temperature of 600C and the rocket ignites, giving the car the massive boost it needs to hit 1689km/h after 40 seconds.

FIRST came the low, cultured hum of the Formula One racing car engine; then Then, 3.5 seconds and one mile later, it will start to decelerate. rolling thunder as the rocket fired up.

Project team leader Richard Noble said yesterday’s successful tests were a ‘major milestone’.

At 12 feet long, 18 inches in diameter and weighing just under 453kg, the rocket is the largest of its kind ever designed in Europe and was the biggest to be fired in the UK for 20 years. Last week it was bolted to the floor for the test in a bomb-proof hangar at Newquay Airport, Cornwall, and was only operating at half capacity.

But next year, if all goes well when it is fitted inside the £10-million (R135-million) car, the rocket will send the gleaming orange and blue machine racing to 1689km/h.

In the hangar it was surrounded by a ‘water deluge system’ in case it exploded and concrete blocks separated it from other parts of the engine. “If it blows up, at least we’ll save something”, said one engineer. Guests were invited to watch via a video link in a nearby hangar and around 120 000 people around the globe viewed it online.

In its ultimate form the rocket will generate around 27 500 pounds of thrust – equivalent to almost 60 000kW, the combined output of 95 Formula One cars.

Earplugs were available during the test, a wise precaution given that the rock concert said to be the loudest ever – a 1976 show by The Who – reached a mere 126 decibels.

THE ACTION’S IN SOUTH AFRICA The assault on the record is due to take place in the South African desert at Hakskeen Pan, the site in 1929 of one of Sir Malcolm Campbell’s many attempts. If Bloodhound succeeds, it will reach 1.4 times the speed of sound – fast enough to get from Land’s End to John o’Groats in 51 minutes.

It would also see RAF pilot Andy Green, 50, who will drive Bloodhound, smash his existing land speed record by more than 360km/h and become the first man to drive through the 1600km/h barrier. Should the target of 1689km/h be reached, it will also beat the low-altitude speed record for aircraft of 1590km/h.

Mr Green described what he faces at the controls: “2G acceleration, then 3G deceleration. 2G is the equivalent of 0 to 96km/h in 1.5 seconds. 3G is the

Mated to the manual transmission, it produces 270kW (260kW on the six-speed automatic) and 530Nm of torque.

As befits its status within the Chevrolet SA range, the Luminas come with an Executive trim level that adds leather sport seats with electronic adjustment for the driver, auto aircon, cruise control and a driving information centre.

Safety features include six airbags on both the sedan and Ute versions, along with anti-locking brakes with brake force distribution and stability and traction control systems.

The Lumina and Lumina Ute are covered by a five-year or 120 000km warranty with roadside assistance and a three-year or 60 000km service plan. Service intervals are set at 15 000km (or one year).

EFFICIENT public transport in South African cities appears to be a perennial problem, but a competition to find solutions for limiting the environmental impacts from transport in European cities could well have an effect in South Africa, too.

The Low Carbon Urban Mobility Technology Challenge winner, the “ToYou, it’s Local” concept (pictured) is said to present a “rare and unique opportunity” to reduce congestion and pollution in cities.

At the heart of the idea is the principle of reducing the number of private and goods vehicles on city streets while increasing the number of buses available for public use. The scheme also involves an “alternative city freight system” to service an e-commerce market that generates a growing number of parcel deliveries.

Other components include a Cool Run system that allows the transport of products at various temperatures without the need for traditional coolers and insulated containers and Freight Bus, a multi-tasking bus that uses surplus bus capacity at off-peak times to transport freight.

Hugh Frost, inventor of “To-You, it’s Local”, explained the thinking behind his idea: “Public transport vehicles are part of the existing problem because for much of their service time they have low occupancy and use levels, while emitting large amounts of pollutants.

“The fact is that most buses (the same issues apply to trams and trains) run well under capacity during off peak times. ‘To-You’ looked at passenger and freight systems end-to-end and concluded that there is sufficient overlap to be able to build on and integrate existing infrastructure of both passenger and freight systems.”

Frost argued that many of the required infrastructure elements already exist, such as bus/rail stations and depots. Micro-hubs would also be located at major bus stops, and concentrations of retail and other commercial activity.

The proposed infrastructure will also use electric vehicles for the last or first kilometre of journeys to allow parcel collection or deliveries and reduce inner-city passengers’ transit times by eliminating the congested roads buses would need to navigate.

“This will create a seamless flow of combined freight, while passengers will be enabled by a safe modular and automated transfer of the freight combined with a variable seating capacity within the Freight Bus enabling the buses capacity for freight and passengers to incrementally adjust dependent on demand,” explained Frost.

Kletskous is eerste in die land DIE dorp en gemeenskap kan nie trotser wees op die redaksie van Die Kletskous nie.

Hierdie koerant van die Laerskool Lydenburg is aangewys as die wenners in Media24 se nasionale skoolkoerantkompetisie.

Aan Beeld het Elize Engelbrecht, hoof van Beeld se skoolprojekte, gesê “dit is die eerste keer dat ’n laerskoolkoerant binne Beeld se verspreidingsgebied die eerste plek behaal.

“Die laerskole in Beeld se verspreidingsgebied het vanjaar uitstekend gevaar,” het Engelbrecht gesê.

Die Kletskous het kop-en-skouers uitgestaan bo die ander koerante soos Laerskool Anton van Wouw in Brooklyn; die Laerskool

MODIKWA Marathon club athletes achieved good results after this weekend's City to City Marathon.

Leboka Noto came 14th overall and ended in position 3 in the Veteran category for athletes between the ages of 40 and 49 years old.

Sukses vir Wenakker Gholfdag W

enakker se gholfdag het op 29 September plaasgevind. Dit is die tweede jaar wat die gholfdag aangebied word, en dit sal van nou af ’n jaarlikse instelling word.

Die baan was propvol entoesiastiese spelers en dit was ’n pragtige dag vir gholf. Daar was wonderlike pryse Foto links: om te wen en ’n hele klomp gelukkige trekkings is ook ’n Bottel wyn is deur Ruben gehou. Almal het heerlik gesmul aan die halfweg-ete Archer op die veiling gekoop.

Die wyn is spesiaal deur wat voorsien is.

Krynauw Otto geteken, bekende Ieder en elk het komplimente uitgedeel oor die oud-Springbok rugbyspeler.

Direkteur van pragtige baan en mooi “greens”. Dankie aan Sybrand Wenakker, Chris Jankowitz De Fortier van Lydenburg Gholfklub se hulp en tydens die prysuitdeling. ondersteuning om die dag ’n sukses te maak.

Daar is ’n baie goeie bedrag ingesamel, en hierdie fondse gaan gebruik word om die finale instandhoudingswerk te doen aan die Wenakker hoofgebou in Kerkstraat. Maar natuurlik sou dit nie moontlik gewees het sonder die ondersteuning van al ons borge en donateurs nie. Elkeen se bydrae, hoe groot of klein ookal, word opreg waardeer en daar kan weereens gesien word dat ons gemeenskap se harte oop is vir die gestremdes in Lydenburg.
