he 2012 World Gold Panning Championships (WGPC) were hosted at Pilgrim's Rest from 1 to 7 October by the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation in partnership with the South African Gold Panning association. The historic mining village has been the venue of National Gold Panning Champs since 1997 and has also hosted a World Championship before, in 2005. Many of the residents of Pilgrim's Rest actively participate in the heritage related sporting activity and most of the locally born children grow up with gold panning. A number of them have participated in European and World Championships overseas and have always been good ambassadors of South Africa. Mia Mason (14) is no exception and started her gold panning career at the age of four, working her way up from the unofficial 'Pikkie' category (under six years old), the Children's Division and is currently in the Juniors league (12 to 16). As gold panning is a great bonding activity in which the entire family can participate, the Mason family of Pilgrim's Rest usually also enter a variety of teams during a championship. During the recent WGPC Mia excelled by winning the gold medal in the Traditional Pan category. Although there is no age restriction in this category, the brave youngsters competing against adults seldom get position (1st-3rd place). So it came as some surprise to everyone when the 14 year old Mia (who is the youngest competitor ever to win this category in a World Championships) beat the other competitors in this category's final, which is mostly

adults and many of them seasoned gold panners from around the globe. Having grown up in Pilgrim's Rest, Mia attended Woodlands School in Sabie from Grade 00 to 7 and is currently enrolled at Penryn College (Grade 8). As the current World Champion in Traditional Gold Panning, she has done her school and country proud. Congratulations on a great achievement, Mia!

Two Rivers Platinum HRD Department achieves MQA accreditation

The proud team of Two Rivers Platinum Training Centre After two years of hard work, dedication and perseverance, the Two Rivers Platinum Training Centre achieved full MQA accreditation. The process started in 2010 when all the systems were implemented to achieve ISO accreditation as the first step to MQA accreditation. This was achieved on the 10th of December 2010. Provisional MQA accreditation was achieved on the 8th of September 2011 and finally full accreditation on the 14th of August 2012. This could only be done with the support and hard work of all the members of the HRD team. Without absolute commitment to quality training, accreditation wouldn't have been possible!

Die eienaars sal â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;n donasie moet maak aan LAPSAR want me. Chester voorsien basies die grootste gedeelte van die geld vir die hokke. Kranslegging wek emosie op vir land se helde en konsentrasiekampslagoffers Gasspreker se toespraak, Elize Boshoff: LYDENBURG, wat ’n gepaste naam vir ons dorp. Die dorp is gestig op my oupagrootjie se broer, Johannes Coetser, se plaas Rietspruit in 1850. Gedurende dieTwee Vryheidsoorlog / Anglo Boereoorlog het die boere, vrouens en kinders gely onder die Britse oorlogvoerders. Die lyding en vernedering was skrikwekkend. Lydenburg was vanaf 6 September 1900 tot 31 Oktober 1902 onder Britse beleg. ’n Deurgangskamp met tente vir die gevange vrouens en kinders is opgeslaan op die oop stuk grond waar Spar nou is. Haglike omstandighede het geheers en die mense het verhonger. Van hier is hulle met oop watrokke geneem na Balmoral, Machadodorp en Barberton. 55 vrouens is in die Lydenburg Deurgangskamp dood, volgens statistiek wat opgeskryf staan in die Smuts Museum in Pretoria. Buite Lydenburg was daar Engelse buiteposte: Fort Howard is op die Dullstroompad naby Mashishing. Volgens Rudi Rousseau moes daar baie meer helde en heldinne se grafte in die Ou Kerkhof op Lydenburg gewees het na aanleiding van die oop stukke grond waar grafstene moes wees. Die Ou-Kerkhof is baie verwaarloos. Hierdie boeregrafte is ons monumente. Ons erfenis wat vir die nageslag behoue moet bly. Klop julle Afrikaner-harte nog warm? Die eerste aanvoerder van die boeremagte was Genl. Joubert, hy is later deur Genl. Ben Viljoen van die Pilgrim's Rest Kommando opgevolg. Genl. Viljoen is buite die dorp gevang en

geïntreneer (Januarie 1902). Hierna het Lord Kitchener sy Verskroeide Aarde beleid verskerp, veral by die moorkonsentrasiekampe waar 26 127 vroue en kinders vermoor is. Die Burgermonument is ingewy in 1918. Hier staan name van ons dapper Lydenburg Kommando wat gesneuwel het. Vryheidsvegters in murg en been. Vandag dink ons aan hulle.

South Africans don’t wash their hands Sixty percent of all South Africans do not wash their hands with soap and water. This compares poorly to other countries, even India. Life Health Care South Africa released the disturbing statistic shortly ahead of the UN's fifth Global Hand Washing Day on 15 October. The campaign was started to get school children from seventy countries to wash their hands as a key way to prevent the spread of disease. Soap acts as a 'vaccine' against a wide range of diseases and neglecting to wash your hands – especially after having gone to the toilet – is tempting fate. A single gram of human faeces can contain 10 million viruses and one million bacteria. Faeces is the main source of diarrhoeal pathogens, and poor hand washing practices may lead to diseases like typhoid, cholera and the more

l ooit by die huis gesit met ’n vlooi wat aan jou byt? Dit begin jeuk. En naderhand raak dit ’n obsessie om van hierdie jeukende-plek ontslae te raak. Die vlooie op Hoorhierso probeer my bewus maak van hoe goed dit sal wees om weer weg te breek. Nie te ver nie. Net sodat ek die vlooi sy sin kan gee en dat dit nie meer jeuk nie. Dis ’n vakansie-vlooi. ’n Droomvlooi. Droom van wonderlike, asemrowende bestemmings. Tropiese eilande, Alaska, Parys, New York en Matjiesfontein. Want daar was ek ook nog nie. Soveel plekke om te sien. En hier sit ons in Lydenburg. Tog kan ons droom. Al is dit ver weg na Tippererie. Ver is ook die Suidpunt van Afrika, reguit Kaap Agulhas toe. Daar was ek glo al. Was glo al oral in Suid-Afrika, maar was net te jonk om te onthou. Ons eie land moet met mening besoek word, hier is ’n onuitputlike bron van reiservarings vir die entoesiastiese reisiger. En ek is definitief entoesiasties. Al is my beursie nie. Elke keer wat die motor se wiele draai moet dit op ’n plek wees waar ek nog nie was nie. Tog is dit makliker gesê as gedaan. Op elke vakansie ontmoet mens fassinerende wesens en besoek interessante plekke. Mens kan mos droom tot in al die uithoeke van die wêreld. Eendag sal jy wel daar kom en definitief ’n paar berge en waterstrome kruis. Al is dit te "ver te ver om te ry, dis te naby om te bly hoe sal ek maak om daar te kom?" Ja 'wanderlust' het my met mening beetgepak.

DIE OUTOPPIE SE KOMMENTAAR

Nege Jaar JY kan met reg vra, hoekom vier ons nege jaar van die Highlands Panorama Nuus? Ons kan mos wag vir 10 jaar. Ja, maar op 10 jaar vier ons weer! As jy so oud is soos ek, word elke datum belangriker! Tien jaar gelede is ek gediagnoseer met diabetes en was werkstres en politieke inmenging by Natuurbewaring, waar ek 30 jaar gewerk het, besig om my dood te maak. My goeie vriend Quintus Loots was pas weer in die dorp

Andri Rousseau van Lydenburg skryf: Ek en van my vriendinne het verlede naweek die Huisgenoot Skouspel by Sun City bygewoon. Van die land se mees bekende kunstenaars soos Juanita du Plessis, Theuns Jordaan, Bok van Blerk en Bobby van Jaarsveld het byvoorbeeld nie by die Skouspel opgetree nie. Ray Dylan, Dozi en Izak Davel het ook elk net een lied gesing. Huisgenoot Skouspel was hierdie jaar vir ons ’n groot teleurstelling. Ek en my vriendinne woon gereeld Hoerskool Lydenburg se revue by en hierdie jaar s’n was die beste wat ons nog bygewoon het. Die revue was vir my beter as Huisgenoot se Skouspel. Dankie en geluk aan almal wat by die revue betrokke was.

Die huidige ekonomie pla ons ook, maar ons bly immer positief en sien die glas altyd as half vol, i.p.v half leeg! Dankie almal!

’n Woelige nege jaar vir die HPN DIE stigting van die Highlands Panorama Nuus, nege jaar gelede, het gevolg uit nood. Quintus Loots het werk nodig gehad en Andre Coetzee moes ’n lewensaanpassing maak. Soos sy pa, “Genis”, was “Q” ’n begaafde taalkundige en hy was ’n goeie joernalis en koerant-redakteur. Pine Pienaar het gesorg dat ons ’n BK word en wettig geregistreer was, waar ons moes wees. Ons het by Deo Volente ’n kantoor vir Q gehuur, ’n kamera en ’n rekenaar gekoop en Q het alleen voltyds begin werk. Hy het Lydenburg met die voet geloop, advertensies gekry en stories begin skryf. Soos ons hier regs op ons eerste voorblad van 15 Oktober 2003 kan sien, was die omstrede munisipaliteit toe al in die nuus. Na ’n maand of twee moes ons iemand aanstel om te help. Omdat ek nie voltyds betrokke was nie, het ek al vergeet, maar ek dink daar het iets soos drie dames gekom en gegaan binne ses maande, totdat Reinet Bell by ons aangesluit het as advertensieverteenwoordiger. Ons het vir Q ’n tweedehandse 1400 Nissan bakkie vir min geld gekry, iemand in die kantoor aangestel om die publiek en telefoon te bedien, nog ’n rekenaar geleen en toe het begin dinge kook. Met die ekonomiese oplewing het dit so goed gegaan dat ons kantoor kon skuif na ons eie eiendom en ons het selfs vir ’n jaar twee koerante per week en ’n koerant in Dullstroom bedryf. Michelle Boshoff het by ons aangesluit as joernalis en is nou redakteur. Later het Jill du Preez en Anandi Boshoff bygekom. Deur die jare moes ons onder andere van drukker verander, nadat ons weens koste genoodsaak was. Die ekonomie se verswakking het ons verniel. Q is in 2010 aan byna dieselfde seldsame siekte as wat Joost van der Westhuizen het, oorlede. Tans gaan dit goed. Brad Sadler as gasspreker gehad. Mnr. Sadler, wat gevangenisstraf vir witboordjiemisdaad uitgedien het, het ’n uitstekende praatjie met die titel “Who let the dogs out” aangebied. Dit het gehandel oor korrupsie, oor hoe maklik dit is om met ’n witleuentjie te begin, gewoond te raak daaraan om die kontrolemaatreëls so ’n bietjie te buig ter wille van “besigheid” en so op die pad van korrupsie te begin. Volgens hom is “checks and balances and controls” in enige finansiële proses daar om te waak teen misdaad. Hierdie maatreëls mag nie, nie eers in buitengewone omstandighede gebuig of verontagsaam word nie. Wanneer dit gebeur en “besigheid” verloop glad en die

partye maak elk ’n ietsie “ekstra”, is dit maklik om te glo geen skade is berokken nie en is dit verby met die beheermaatreëls. Dit handel alles oor die nagevolge of uiteindelike resultate wat verkeerd loop. Die vergadering, wat ongelukkig baie swak bygewoon was, het daarna terugvoer gegee oor sake van plaaslike belang. Die sakegemeenskap van Lydenburg / Mashishing word weereens genooi om by die sakekamer aan te sluit en dit aktief te ondersteun. Die sakekamer het direkte toegang tot die munisipaliteit en het met sy sterk bedingingsmag ’n goeie hefboom om namens die groter gemeenskap druk toe te pas waar dit nodig is. Hondevergiftigting - Die langtermyngevolge Die vlaag hondevergiftigings en diefstalle van veral motorfietse rondom die week van 30 September tot tans, het betrekking (Sien beide die Highlands Panorama Nuus en die Steelburger / Lydenburg Nuus van die afgelope weke in hierdie verband). Veertien dae na die voorval, word daar nog steeds dooie diere aangemeld. Volgens die plaaslike veeartse en al die webtuistes wat inligting oor aldicarb (Temic of two step) bevat, bind die aktiewe bestanddeel met klei, wanneer dit deur water in die grond in migreer. Niemand verskaf egter inligting oor die praktiese neutralisering van die gif soos in ’n tuin nie en niemand is bereid om ’n tydsduur te plaas op wanneer ’n area wat vergiftig is, as veilig verklaar kan word nie. Die gif is eenvoudig te sterk en omgewingsomstandighede eenvoudig te onvoorspelbaar. In ons geval het ons alles gedoen wat normaalweg gedoen behoort te word, behalwe om die bogrond totaal uit die erf te grawe en te verwyder. Geweldig baie water, afgwissel met warm sonskyndae, die daaglikse skoonmaak van enige verdagte materiaal ens. was onsuksesvol. Dit alles blyk vrugteloos te wees, aangesien ander diere nou begin vrek. ’n totaal van tien dooie paddas is veertien dae na die voorval opgetel en verwyder. Daar is geen teken van die eens luidrugtige teenwoordigheid van voëls op die gras in die erf nie. Hulle sê hulle wil misdaad bekamp. Hulle weet hondevergiftiging gaan altyd misdaad vooraf, so waarom nie die probleem by die begin aanspreek nie? Kry die ouens wat gif gooi en jou misdaadstatistiek neem met 70% af. Hoe moeilik kan die wiskunde nou wees? My beloning van R 5000 plus etlike ander inwoners se beloftes van R 500 elk, bly dus staan, vir enige inligting wat sal lei tot die arrestasie en skuldigbevinding van die boosdoeners. Kom ons as ’n gemeenskap (wit, swart, arm en ryk) vat hande en staan saam om hierdie euwel uit te roei en dit te bly beveg. PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Carlos Ghosn has become the first person in the auto industry, and the fourth person overall, to win a “lifetime achievement award” from the Strategic Management Society, a non-profit group that promotes ethical and strategic business stewardship. At the awards ceremony in Prague today, the jurors called Mr. Ghosn a “truly outstanding corporate strategist and global leader whose impact on strategic thinking will go way beyond the industry he is involved in.” The jurors selected Mr. Ghosn for, among other reasons, his leadership during the Nissan turnaround starting in 1999 and his advocacy of zero-emission vehicles. THE annual Kinsey Report, which surveys parts pricing across the country's new vehicle selection, has returned great results for Nissan in South Africa in 2012. Created and managed by Malcolm Kinsey, the Kinsey Report evaluates a number of important vehicle parts in varying areas – from frequently-damaged body panels to wear-and-tear gearbox parts – and compiles a parts basket for each vehicle. The results are then shown as a percentage of the vehicle's purchase price. In 2012, the Kinsey Report reflected its biggest test yet, evaluating 64 different vehicles across eight categories. Besides the Micra's aggressive pricing and superior space for its segment, Nissan's budget-friendly entry-level hatch has outperformed five other competitors in the Kinsey Report's City Car category. The Micra 1.2 Acenta reflected a 24.15% parts basket, in relation to its purchase price of R132 900. Janico Dannhauser, Product Manager for Passenger Vehicles at Nissan South Africa, is delighted by the Micra's performance. “Nissan SA is very proud to have maintained the launch promise we made to the market of supplying a vehicle which is not only affordable to buy, but coupled to its great fuel economy and low running costs, has affordable parts too. The Micra's parts basket cost is not only phenomenally low as a percentage of the purchase price, but also as a rand value of only R32 094.” Not only did the Micra do well but in the Family Favourites category, the Nissan Tiida also fended off ten competitors to come out on top with a parts basket of 22.31%. Bufori sales excellent Toyota branding tops KUALA LUMPUR - The global economic doldrums may have weighed on businesses around the world, but in Malaysia a luxury hand-crafted automaker struggles to keep up with demand as orders pour in from China and the Middle East. Some customers are willing to wait nearly two years for their Bufori, which costs anywhere from an equivalent of about R1.3 million - R3 million and can contain unique touches at the buyer's request, ranging from built-in vaults to pearl-studded interiors. One such customer is eHong Tan, a Malaysian green technology entrepreneur and tea connoisseur, who asked for her Bufori to be fitted with teamaking and aromatherapy features. Tan said: "I love drinking Chinese tea. The car allows me to make tea and drink it while I'm travelling.” Bufori's founder and managing d i r e c t o r, G e r r y Khouri, said he first started the company in his native Australia in 1987, but decided to move to Malaysia in the early 1990s when demand from the region began to jump. Khouri said: “There's a lot of promise here that's what brought us to Malaysia and

This year's report sees Toyota's brand valuation by Interbrand surge 9% and securing an overall Top 10 spot across all industries. The Geneva, a four-door luxury limousine with elegant curves and a long running board, is powered by a 6.4-litre V8 engine boasting up to 350kW and 630Nm of torque. "These are exclusive, very elite. You've got to be very special to own one of these cars," Khouri said. But Khouri admits that the long waiting list can push some customers to competitors such as Bentley and Rolls Royce. "These cars are made by hand. No machines - look around you, it's just people," he says, gesturing around the factory in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur where workers are busy fitting custom-made parts and molding the Bufori's body. Upstairs, in the upholstery and interior section, leather is cut and stitched by hand while engineers put together electronic controls. "You can't speed up people like a machine," he added. With around a hundred workers, the factory makes only 60 cars worldwide per annum - a fraction of its 300 target, with the limited workforce and the long hours it takes to complete a car dragging down production. "Our problem is our demand exceeds our capacity. We're not in the situation where we can produce enough vehicles to meet the demand worldwide," Khouri said. "It sounds like a crazy problem to have - but it's serious because we are losing sales everyday." Khouri wants to set up more factories to speed up production but is wary, wanting to preserve the quality. "Bufori cars are very labour-intensive and dependent on people. We might compromise the quality which is something we don't want to do.” The Bufori La Joya coupe takes 3500 man hours to complete while the Geneva sedan needs 9000 man hours. "That's ridiculous in the overall scheme of things. If you look at a mass producer carmaker, even 50 man hours is taking too much.” But customers who chose to be patient have no regrets. "It is worth the wait," said Tan, whose car took 20 months to finish. "It's more than a car. To me, the Bufori is an art." Wheels24.co.za

We test the new Chev Cruze hatch WE tested the Chevrolet Cruze, when it was first released a few years ago, in sedan format. I drove the 1600 petrol and was impressed with the car, but commented that the 1600 engine in this big car lacked oomph. Later we tested the 2.0 diesel and commented that the Cruze was now perfect. Now, however, we have the new Cruze and for the first time it is available in the ever popular hatchback format. Being â&#x20AC;&#x153;old schoolâ&#x20AC;? I still prefer sedan cars, but the majority of South Africans like their hatchbacks. And the Cruze is a big one. So much so, that it stands almost alone in this regard, with Ford Focus, Kia Cerato and Hyundai i30 probably the most notable competition. As a hatch, the sheer size of the Cruze is very appealing. Inside, in front especially, it is very roomy. Getting in and out the back is not in the class of Lumina, but then so is the price. The boot is large for a hatch. Both front seats are fully adjustable and the passenger seat, like that of the driver, can also adjust for height, which is rare in this price range. The steering is adjustable for height and reach and the drivers position is ultra comfortable. The car comes with a 60 litre fuel tank, a full size spare wheel, aircon (climate control optional), power windows, cruise control, power (heated) mirrors, park assist (optional), leather steering wheel, (leather seats optional), 6-speaker infotainment radio / CD system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux in, steering satellite controls, trip computer, ABS, EBD, BAS, ESP, TC, front fog lamps, disc brakes on all four wheels, 6 airbags and remote central locking and a service plan. Nine exterior colours, four interior trim levels and two alloy wheel permutations (16 and 17 inch) are available. The hatch comes with 1600 and 1800 engines and various optional packages can be specified. The diesel is only available in sedan form, with the flagship of the range (with all the goodies) being the Sedan 2.0 D LT AT. We tested the 1600 LS petrol model. This is the most affordable car in the range and it really comes fully loaded. The engine is not the same 1600 we tested when it was first released. The new 1600 makes 91 kW and 155 Nm of torque. It feels much livelier than the previous model and performance is adequate. Gearing is good and allows for good acceleration and overtaking ability. The engine revs at around 3 400 rpm at 120 in fifth and the car should be able to cruise all day at 140 or more. Gear selection is smooth, the clutch is light and the steering precise. As expected with the four wheel discs, brakes are excellent. Stability and traction control works well, as I tested the car in heavy rain and deep water puddles at 120 did not unsettle the car. The Cruze chassis remains one of the best in the industry. I have very little criticism for this car. Although performance is much better than in the original 1600 sedan, like I said previously, the Cruze chassis is so good that it begs for a special, big engined, high performance version. Something like a tweaked 2.4 or 3.0 with SS badging and a bit of growl from the exhaust! But considering the economy, the pressure from the greenies, real world running costs and what actually sells in the market, the 1600 at its price is an excellent choice. I also like the cloth on the dasboard. It is a welcome change from hard plastics, but there is a caveat. Especially with the meshed cloth, it will require special care to keep clean and will require the regular use of a good vacuum cleaner. For my money, the new Chevrolet Cruze is in class of its own. FORD Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) has successfully turned on second-shift production at its Silverton Assembly Plant, virtually doubling production and improving supply to both domestic and export markets. Export sales consequently grew 8% on last month, out-performing the rest of the SA motor industry, which recorded 6% growth. Increased production has steadied supply of Ford Ranger, which remained the country's second-best selling one-ton Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) with 1 272 sold domestically. FMCSA exported 3 378 Rangers during September. “Increased production at Silverton has created 800 job opportunities within FMCSA as well as our suppliers and with the first month of running second-shift successfully under our belt. Our world-class manufacturing facility will meet customer demand with the consistent supply of Rangers,” said FMCSA's Vice President Marketing, Sales and Service, Dean Stoneley. Mazda BT-50 sales grew 43% during September, only its second full-month of sales since launch. The combined results meant FMCSA LCV sales grew 8% on August when the market declined 2,8% on last month. Equally, while the passenger car market slowed 2% on August, FMCSA car sales grew 5% driven by yet another strong Figo month (1 179 units sold). Fiesta and Focus continue to perform well and the majority of sales are still driven through FMCSA dealers directly to motorists. “The market continues to be driven by government and rental sales,” says Stoneley. “Only 74,5% of total SA vehicle sales were done through dealerships during September. FMCSA sustained our dealer channel sales share with 94% of our sales being done directly with motorists on our showroom floors.” The South African new vehicle market was slightly softer (down 2%) on August, but 1,4% stronger than September last year. TIGER Wheel & Tyre and Hankook are offering an off-road tyre they claim will last for 80 000km and they’re backing their claim with a guarantee – South Africa’s first distance warranty on all-terrain tyres. The warranty applies to the purchase of two or more all-terrain Hankook Dynapro AT-M RF10 tyres in sizes 15” to 18”. At 10 000km intervals, the vehicle must be returned to Tiger Wheel & Tyre for tyre rotation, balancing and alignment. In addition, tyre pressure must be checked monthly and tyres inflated to the manufacturer’s specification. Ashley Cooper, Hankook brand executive, said: “Drivers of all-terrain vehicles have long been asking for a tyre distance warranty like those afforded to drivers of passenger vehicles and we’re pleased to be the first to offer just that. “The challenge in getting a warranty like this to market was two-fold. First, all-terrain tyres are subjected to far harsher demands than passenger tyres, so that requires superior construction, performance and durability of the tyre being warrantied. In the event of tyres not going the distance, customers will receive credit towards a new or equivalent Hankook tyre of the same size. The compensation is based on a calculation against the distance already used on the tyre and the usable tread left.
