Me Hilda Roos van K53 Bestuurskool het gehoor dat Me Espag ’n oujongnooi is en geen kinders het nie. Me Roos het donasies gekry van Tumbleweed Bloemiste, Salon Hendrien, Sanet Lewis, BVK, Joubert Apteek, Awesome Books, Bakgat Biltong, Absolute Water, Kenchington’s, Pick n Pay, K53 Bestuurskool en Pastoor Dries Strydom (opening en seënwense) en met almal se bydrae’s was me Essie Espag se 97ste verjaarsdag een groot makietie! Baie dankie aan almal wat dit moontlik gemaak het.

RESIDENTS near the end of the Sterkspruit plot road just before the train line are at the end of their patience with the illegal dumping of dead animals on this section of the road. The picture featured here was taken on Monday morning by the Highlands Panorama News after a phone call from one of the residents. Apparently this practice has been going on for years, not only of dead animals, but also live, unwanted puppies and other fully grown dogs. Not only is the smell unbearable for people living in the area, but the carcasses pose a significant health risk as the animal decomposes. The puppies and larger dogs that are dumped alive follow the road after they are dumped and land up on plots along this road. There is no way to tell if these animals are vaccinated against Rabies or are carrying diseases like Parvo etc and as such pose a health and safety risk to residents. Some of the larger dogs are also starting to bother cattle in the area and farmers are concerned that calves may be attacked and killed as these dogs are hungry. It is illegal to dump a dead pet on the side of the road or in an open area. The correct procedure is people must take a deceased pet to the Municipal landfill site, state at the gate that they have an animal carcass for burial, they will be directed to where the diggers are working and a hole will be dug immediately and the animal buried for them. The Highlands Panorama News regularly receives complaints about dead pets being dumped in open areas. Another problem area seems to be near the river in Maasdorp Street. Illegal dumping is a punishable offence in terms of the bylaws that are implemented for this purpose. People caught dumping animals, dead or alive may face prosecution.

Samancor, Eastern Chrome Mines invest in skills upliftment S

amancor Eastern Chrome Mines Engineering Training Centre was officially opened by the General Manager Mr Emile Britz on 18 October 2012, by the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the occasion. The opening of the training centre has been necessitated by the accreditation requirements set by the Mining industries SETA, namely the Mine Qualifications Authority (MQA). Eastern Chrome Mines has achieved full accreditation status for engineering “On the Job” training phases on 12 November 2010, for engineering disciplines namely

Electrical, Boilermaking, Fitting and Diesel Mechanic. The training centre has been equipped with up to date and modern equipment to deal with the challenges of on the job training for Operatives and Learnerships. It will also be used to develop portable skills of mine employees. The facility has now embarked on training members of the community within the Samancor Socio Economic area on practical novice Engineering Skills and short courses, consisting of basic Electricity, Fitting and Boilermaking. These courses will assist to identify learners for future Learnerships and possible employm e n t w i t h Samancor. This is a landmark achievement for ECM and will assist in developing a more skilled person who is better equipped to find employment.

Tumbleweed Plant Nursery saw the letter on the front page of the Highlands Panorama News last week and immediately contacted the Office of the Thaba Chweu Mayor. They offered to donate trees to create an avenue of trees to Kellysville. The Mayor and his staff visited the nursery on Friday to collect the trees. It will be planted within the next two weeks. The Mayor said he knows that will not solve all the problems of Kellysville but he was glad that businesses are already involved and that the letter created such a quick response. ~ By Michelle Boshoff

Norman Forrester het die Trofee vir Dienslewering Seuns ontvang vir sy groot taak wat hy met effektiwiteit altyd voltooi het. Nicole Duminy het die Trofee vir Dienslewering Dogters ontvang. Die trofee vir Toegewydheid is aan Suné Nel toegeken en die Thys Cronje Trofee vir Uitnemendheid aan Lisma Janse van Rensburg. Lisma het ’n gemiddel van 86.8% graad agt tot graad 12 gehandhaaf.

Mnr. Andre Coetzee, medeeienaar van die Highlands Panorama Nuus, oorhandig die prys aan Lerato Moraba vir Afrikaans ETA Beste Presteerder 92%. Die Highlands Panorama Nuus het twee boek pryse geskenk as deel van ons opheffing vir Afrikaans. Lerato was die wenner van die Nasionale Radikale Redenaarskompetisie, verwerf erekleure, en is die beste redenaar in die skool.

Art exhibition for Charity

pending the day in a splendid garden under the shade of trees could not be a more fitting day for the Garden Club. The day was hosted by Tumbleweed Nursery in Lydenburg. No expense or effort were spared to make this a ‘blooming’ success. Thank you to all the o rg a n i s e r s a n d e v e r y o n e w h o contributed to this day. The Garden Club has members from Lydenburg, Ohrigstad, Dullstroom and surrounding areas. The ladies all had hats on, befitting the occasion which gave the event a fun theme.

andra Gregory of African Art in Rensburg street is holding a charitable function for the p e n s i o n e r s o f Ly d e n b u r g , i n conjunction with the Dienssentrum. She is calling on all artists to exhibit their art and hopefully sell some of the art outside of the Dienssentrum on 2 and 3 November. The road will be closed from the Dienssentrum to Spar service entrance, making it a safe venue for people to support the event. 20% of the proceeds of the sales will go to the Dienssentrum. The Dienssentrum will also be providing refreshments to raise money as well. There is no entrance fee for the public, but the exhibitors will be paying a small fee to go towards the fundraising. All art entries for the exhibition must be brought to African

Art by Wednesday 31 October. If you have a late entry, please call Sandra on 071 539 1183 to arrange submission. There will also be a competition for Children at school level from 3 to 18 years of age. The theme is Save The Rhino and they must submit 2 pictures each: one pencil sketch and one painted rhino on an A4 page, any medium is acceptable. Name, age and school must be on the back of the submissions. Judging of the competition will be done by Lydenburg artists.

New fashion icon at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa

THE trendy and hip centre of Melrose Arch was abuzz as a week of fashion got underway with the start of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa during the week of 24 October to 28 October 2012. Local and international designers, buyers and fashionistas converged at one of the most desirable addresses in the City of Gold – Johannesburg – for the long-awaited Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa. Following the tremendous success of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town, the week promised to entice with a line-up of over fifty designers showing “African Fashion at its best”! GT-Academy - It’s not a game anymore WELCOME to the 21st century, where the virtual world seamlessly morphs into the real one. Or at least that's how it worked out for Lucas Ordoñez, who has gone from being a student with a Playstation and a healthy interest in racing games, to a works driver for Nissan, with a podium finish at Le Mans to his name. The 27-year-old Spaniard was the winner of the inaugural Nissan GT Academy in 2008, an innovative and action-packed competition based around Playstation's Gran Turismo racing game. Gran Turismo features 'virtual' versions of performance icons such as the Nissan GT-R and 370Z. It's incredible simulation has opened up a whole new world for a new generation of race drivers. There was certainly doubt that a gaming console could provide a stepping stone to international motorsport success, however Lucas' success has proved it possible. While he was an avid gamer with a passion for Gran Turismo, he never dreamed he'd become a 'real' race driver. So when he went from his lounge to an LMP2 drive at Le Mans - finishing on the podium at his first attempt last year - it was a dream come true. “Winning GT Academy has changed my life,” says Lucas, lean and athletic in the modern race driver mould. “It was by chance that I came across the competition in a motoring magazine and decided to give it a go. I wasn't a very serious gamer, but when I played my friends I usually won, so I had a bit of a feeling for it, I think.” On-line success meant he graduated to the Spanish finals, and as one of the top three in that round went through to a European final at Silverstone in the UK – a week of motorsport 'Boot Camp' which also paid attention to aspects such as fitness and media relations. This was also the first time in the process that competitors actually sat in a racing machine, as opposed to in front of a console, and kicked off with tuition and assessment in karts before graduating to the likes of the 370Z and GT-R. Little did he know that winning the final would result in him driving tracks like Nurburgring, his Madrid home track Jarama, and others in the real world. In 2009 and 2010 he learnt the ropes in the European GT4 championship at the wheel of

a 370Z, overcoming some initial antagonism from other drivers who felt he hadn't really earned the right to be there. He drove a GT-R Club Track Edition in the Nurburgring 24-hour in May, appropriately sharing the car with Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of the Gran Turismo genre. “The Nurburgring is something else. The car we drove was only slightly modified, but it coped brilliantly with 24-hours at the 'Ring. It was a really crazy race, very scary at times!” grins Lucas. “I did a lot of my preparation on Gran Turismo and when I got to the Nurburgring I knew exactly where I was on the course from the first lap, and I knew where to brake and what lines to take. Gran Turismo is much more than a game and guys who are quick on Gran Turismo were usually quick on the track. Sure, you can't feel the car in a real way but when driving with a good steering wheel and pedals set-up it is like being in a proper car: you have to brake correctly, use the right lines, and apply all those little skills you develop and use in a race car. It is great tool to learn.” Straight after his flying visit to South Africa to launch GT Academy locally, Lucas flew to Atlanta, where he will drive the revolutionary Nissan Delta Wing race car in the 10-hour Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, a round of the American Le Mans Series, on October 20. Two in a row for Team Ford Racing CHRIS Visser and Japie Badenhorst claimed Team Ford Racing's second successive victory in the penultimate round of the Absa Off Road championship. The result has kept the Ford crew's championship hopes alive with the title now to be decided at the final round of the season. Visser and Badenhorst demonstrated their competiveness early on in the weekend by taking the runner-up slot in Friday's prologue session – one second behind the leaders. They quickly made their way to the front as Visser drove a faultless race to secure victory in the Ford dealer-sponsored Human Auto 400. “We needed a win to keep our championship aspirations alive and that's just what we were able to do this weekend,” explains Visser. “The Ranger has been performing exceptionally well of late. This has allowed us to claw back some ground in the championship battle that will now be settled at the final round.”

Lance Woolridge and Ward Huxtable in the sister SP Ford Ranger ran a consistent race by taking seventh place after maintaining a solid pace through much of the event. A navigational error in Friday's prologue session meant they weren't able to compete at the front of the field but the pair used the event in order to gain further experience in what proved to be a fast-paced and rough event. This was a very tight race and the top finishing times were all incredibly close. “We made a navigational error in the prologue which meant we started in a position that was not necessarily indicative of our pace. It also left us to contest with substantial dust, one of the disadvantages of a late start,” explained Lance. Overall the team were pleased with the weekend's results with Team Manager Neil Woolridge singing the praises of his team: “Chris and Japie had a fantastic race, perhaps their best ever. They were under intense pressure throughout the race – at times sandwiched between their toughest competitors – but never lost their composure. I'd like to thank the team for their faultless preparation ahead of this event, both cars were trouble-free throughout the weekend and we were able to put on a fantastic performance for the Ford fans.” With one round remaining the team are now looking ahead to the next race and ensuring both Class SP Ford Rangers are once again thoroughly prepared and ready to battle for championship honours. Rooikatfees - wat ’n fees DIE pas afgelope Rooikatfees op die plaaslike rugbyveld het heelwat belangstelling uitgelok. Gaskunstenaars soos Lianie May, Snotkop, Armand Hofmeyr, Dawid Fourie en ander het opgetree. Die Curriebeker eindstryd is op ’n grootskerm TV uitgesaai. Die stalletjies wat daar was, veral die biertuin, is druk besoek. Die geleentheid was ongelukkig nie wyd in die plaaslike media adverteer nie, met hoofsaaklik plakkate wat in die dorp op was. Bywoning was derhalwe teleurstellend. Lydenburg is bekend daarvoor dat hy feeste slegs goed ondersteun as daar ’n baie groot verskeidenheid van items en besienswaardige dinge aangebied word en dit baie lank voor die tyd sterk gepromofeer word. Daar was bv. feitlik geen plaaslike besighede wat uitgestal het nie. Na ons mening was die toegangsfooi redelik, in ag genome die gaskunstenaars wat opgetree het. Van Lelievlei se inwoners het opgetree as motorwagte, die hekke beman en party het diens gedoen by van die stalletjies. In medewerking met Frik Rousseau
