YDENBURG se eie mnr. Fanie Erasmus (SNR), eienaar van Lydenburg Toyota, was die afgelope week ingehuldig as Bevelvoerder van Hoedspruit Vliegeskader 101. Hy neem die posisie oor by Lt. Kol. F.J. Boshoff, wat mnr. Erasmus alle sukses en voorspoed toegewens het. Mnr. Erasmus het in 1981 sy vliegopleiding begin en in 1991 militêre vleuls behaal. In 1994 het hy sy vlieg Springbokkleure verwerf en staan tans met 2700 vliegure op sy kerfstok! 101 Eskader is ’n reserwevleul van die SA Lugmag in Mpumalanga en is hoofsaaklik verantwoordelik vir misdaadvoorkoming. "BEELD-kinderfonds en CMR Lydenburg" DIE Kersfees seisoen beteken onder andere ook dat ons 'n spesiale geleentheid het om te gee aan mense wat minder bevoorreg as ons is - BEELDkinderfonds bied ons die geleentheid: Die CMR Lydenburg in u gebied kan vanjaar weer noodsaaklike fondse vir die dringende behoeftes in u eie gebied bekom deur middel van die BEELDkinderfonds. CMR Lydenburg doen alles moontlik om die verwydering van 'n kind van sy ouers te voorkom. THE Modikwa Plant has once again leapt forward with an innovative concept of appreciation. It had been noticed through Visible Veld Leadership Walkabouts that certain people stood out above the rest in the style and manner in which they performed their duties. This does not mean that the rest are not worthy of the accolade of being an outstanding employee or team member. What this means, is that from time to time an employee will stand out for either a specific task and the management team decided to invite them to the Plant Boardroom on 25th October 2012 for refreshments, to say thank you for their input, innovation, willingness, flexibility and dedication to ensure that their departments and the Plant can reach its full potential. William Arthur Ward has once said, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” The behaviour that is not reinforced, rewarded and recognized is likely to diminish gradually. The Concentrator Plant Management has therefore found it fundamentally important to express their gratitude by recognizing and saying thank you to 5 individuals in the plant who have displayed a positive attitude and have been hardworking over the years. These individuals were recognised for uotstanding contributions towards efficiency in the pant. They are pictured left.

NA meer as ’n dekade het Lynette Hinton en Mariki Janse van Rensburg besluit om hul verfkwaste tydelik te verruil vir kraggereedskap. Met ’n getimmer, geskuur en geskaaf, het hulle die interessantste dekoritems en geskenke begin maak. Hul beplan om die “Gorgeous Geskenke Mark” ten minste twee keer per jaar te hou. Hierdie jaar sal dit in Lynette Hinton se pragtige tuin gehou word. Daar sal ’n wye verskeidenheid, keurig verpakte geskenkies ook wees, selfs iets vir ouma, oupa en die kinders. Als reg om onder die Kersboom geplaas te word. Behalwe vir Mariki en Lynette se dekoritems, geskenke en juwele, is daar ook klere, Griekse gebak, houtwerk en iets vir baba en kleuter. Gaan loer gerus in en geniet koek en tee of ’n glasie wyn in die teetuin, op 16 en 17 November by Lydenburgstraat 4, vanaf 10:00 to 18:00. Jammer, maar daar is geen kaart fasiliteite, slegs kontant verkope.
Krappies en Krefies, Lydenburg is onlangs besoek deur N3 Fire & Rescue waar hulle vir die kleuters kom vertel het wat hulle moet doen as daar ’n vuur of brand ontstaan. Me Jeanne Boyce, Skoolhoof van Krappies & Krefies wil N3 Fire & Rescue bedank dat hulle kon tyd afstaan aan die skool se kleuters en vir hulle insette in die gemeenskap.

What now? YOUR eyes are not deceiving you. After all these years and many requests, I have agreed to write the “Outoppie” in English from time to time. But what do I write about? In Afrikaans I spoke to my “own” people, about whom I am very concerned. The Afrikaners have come a long way. Forged from several European countries, including English, Scottish, Irish, French and German folk, and many people from the Netherlands, they have been part of Africa for more than four centuries. They have a rich heritage and have forged their own culture over time,
Bikers opened their hearts to Lelievlei this past weekend. Various motorbike clubs in the Lowveld held a Day of Remembrance at the Gemeentes van Christus Church in Lydenburg, in remembrance of the bikers who passed away over the years. Their motto is “Biking is our thing, but Jesus is our King”. Pastoor Neels Barnardo gave a stirring message to attendees. After church the bikers visited Lelievlei and made a big donation. The children were amazed at the motorbikes and climbed onto them to get a feel of what biking is all about. Carol Nyenes of the Red Devils of Lydenburg organized this special event. Frik Rousseau, Director of Lelievlei, said that he has many good friends who are bikers and they are the nicest people on earth. He thanked them for the donation and felt honoured that he was invited to the Remembrance day for bikers.

was a very bad idea. However, as peachy as all this is, I am seriously concerned. The Afrikaner has lost it’s power base with democracy. More serious is a general (and I am generalising) loss of it’s high sense of standards, a loss of morality, lack of entrepreneurship that characterised them earlier and general, religious degeneration and an abandonment of values. Respected as Post Masters, School Masters, Doctors, Clergymen and Captains of Industry they are no more. There is a slow but sure sinking into a Godless quagmire of bitterness, poverty and general impotency regarding community matters. And with this comes negativity, alcohol abuse, stress, racism and further decline. I shall therefore continue to crack the whip at them, because South Africa as a country cannot afford to lose the spirit of the Afrikaner. It built this country and should always continue to be part of the solution rather than the problem. I am looking forward to this English column. English speakers are next in my sights and I am not going to spare the rod!

Waarskuwing e-Car nou in Lydenburg T
SOOS die opskrif dit stel is hierdie 'n waarskuwing aan alle eienaars van persele, hetsy hulle dit self verhuur of laat verhuur deur 'n agent. Ek het my perseel te Potgieterstraat verhuur. Ek moes sekerlik snuf in die neus gekry het, toe my deposito nie dadelik betaal word nie en al wat ek gekry het was leë beloftes, ook toe my huur nie stiptelik betaal is nie en soms ook nie alles op een slag nie, sonder vooraf reëlings – maar ons Lydenburgers glo mos maar in die goedheid in almal – en dit word misbruik. Die laaste paar maande wat die huurder die perseel beset het, het hulle glad nie hulle huur betaal nie. Nieteenstaande die regsproses wat gevolg moet word, is geen huurgelde ontvang nie. Die koste om die perseel tot die oorspronklike toestand te herstel beloop 'n astronomiese bedrag – onder andere is die veiligheidshekke so beskadig deurdat hulle dit vol gate geboor het en die gaas wat opgesit is geroes het, dat dit feitlik herbou sal moet word. Hulle het selfs so ver gegaan en die toiletrolhouers, handoekreëlings en spieëls wat ons installeer het met die omskepping van die gebou, te verwyder.

Dit is ’n trotse groep wat swaar steun op die bekende Duitse ingineurswese en kwaliteit wat verskaf word deur Robbert Bosch in Duitsland. Kawasaki Versys - a lot of bike for the money KAWASAKI's Versys 650 is a great everyday bike and is suited for both commuting to work and taking on the open road. In 2012 Kawasaki added a 1000cc engine to its versatile 650. I asked Team Green for a Versys 1000 to find out if the bigger bike is as good as the 650. Kawasaki says it hopes to improve the Versys 1000’s "fun factor" and as a result adds the exciting Z1000 engine.

What noise is that? ONE of the advantages of driving someone else’s car is that unusual noises don’t bother you half as much as they would if it was your own car, mainly because you don’t have to pay for potentially expensive repairs. Some noises are more irritating than others, which is why a sound-level meter cannot tell you whether a particular car is restful to drive at highway speeds. However, when it comes to evaluating a car, or trying to fi nd a fault, some noises can be very helpful. In fact, if there is a sudden change in your car’s noise level, you could save a lot of money by having the problem attended to at an early stage. EXHAUST NOISE The most prominent engine noise usually emanates in the exhaust system. New cars are often designed to make as little exhaust noise as possible, except in the case of sportscars, where a certain level of exhaust noise is considered desirable. Just imagine how boring a Harley-Davidson would sound without a V-twin burble. As a car ages, the exhaust system could develop a leak. This is seldom something to worry about if it’s only a slight noise, but you should still have it checked. Some welding easily closes a small hole, but a bigger hole may mean that part of the system will have to be replaced. PINKING This noise used to be common before ignition systems were computerised. Pinking sounds like a tin can full of nails being shaken under the bonnet and, if the conditions are right, it usually occurs every time you open the throttle. This could cause damage to the pistons or valves if it happens all the time. The temporary cure is to avoid large throttle openings, while the permanent cure is to fi nd out why the engine is pinking. Possible reasons include ignition timing that is too far advanced, using fuel with too low an octane value, overheating, spark plugs with the wrong heat value, or a lean fuel mixture. On older cars, pinking is often caused by too much carbon build-up inside the engine due to too many short trips. The cure is to spend at least an hour on the open road every few weeks. This will burn away some of the carbon and the engine will thank you in kind by being livelier. It should also no longer pink. TAPPET NOISE Engine tappets make a clicking sound when they’re set too loose, or else when some of the valve-train components are worn. This is irritating but should not cause any immediate damage. However, they must be reset soon after the noise starts because some of the tappets may be too tight
bonnet is the result of a misaligned fan/alternator belt. The power-steering pump’s drive belt will screech on full lock if the tension is even slightly too loose. RATTLING NOISE A rattling noise when the engine is idling may be due to the timing chain. This is normal on some of the older cars, so seek a mechanic’s advice to help you decide whether it’s normal for the particular model, or whether you should have the chain replaced. If the engine has a timing belt instead of a chain, the noise will sound more like a slap than a rattle, but these belts usually break before they become noisy. They should be replaced at the recommended intervals. A loose air cleaner or bracket is often responsible for a rattling noise which often occurs only at certain throttle openings, or only when the engine is idling. Carmag.co.za One can of course add to the above list. We have recently experienced a knocking noise underneath and at the back of two of our Corsa bakkies. Casual inspection revealed nothing amiss but the fault was traced to a bolt by the dealer. Check for removable tow bar hitches that tend to rattle, loose tools/jack/wheelspanner in the spare wheel well and even the spare itself on a bakkie. Other noises you should never ignore is a clicking sound when turning from front wheel drive cars (CV joint) or a single high note click when you pull away on rear wheel drives (usually a universal joint) a rattle from the steering on rough surfaces(steering rack wear) and many more. Any noise emanating from a car that is abnormal, could lead to expensive damage. Have it checked by an expert. Andre Coetzee

This is normal at high mileages. If the noise doesn’t go away, the tappets may be worn or there may be dirt particles clogging one of the tappets. Dirty engine oil could result in valve noise and may even cause enough wear for the noise to remain after an oil change. GUDGEON PIN NOISE They’re also known as piston pins and tend to make a clicking noise when worn, especially during idling. An immediate fi x is seldom needed because the wear will take a long time to become severe enough to warrant replacement. KNOCKING NOISE Big-end bearing damage usually exposes itself as a light knocking that is more prominent when the engine is neither pulling nor slowing down. Main bearing noise is similar but has a deeper sound. These are expensive noises because they point towards an engine overhaul. SQUEAKING NOISES A squeaking noise under the

SA Car Of The Year finalists selected THE 2013 South African Car of Year finalists have been chosen - which do you think deserves the title? The finalists were chosen by a limited jury of SA Guild of Motoring Journalists' members who have narrowed their list down to 12 models. Vehicles will be judged on aesthetics, build quality, ergonomics, fuel consumption, safety, handling, performance and value for money. Our prediction: Once again the list features excellent cars, six of which we have tested. The list also includes sports cars, a high end SUV and a double cab, which makes the choice almost impossible. How do you compare a double cab with a Porsche? We regard the Ford Ranger as excellent and it deserves a win. Although we have’nt tested the Toyota 86, it seems to be an excellent car, but once again, how do you compare a sports car to a budget oriented family saloon like the Kia Rio or Hyundai i30, both excellent cars? We have tested the new Opel Meriva and personally I regard it as one of the best, most versatile cars that I have ever tested. It is however expensive and perhaps not a great looker, which could count against it. I am afraid that the SAGMJ have long ago lost the plot with the COTY awards. You simply cannot compare apples with grapefruit! However, the list exists. My guess - (1) Ford Ranger (2) Hyundai i30 (3) Kia Rio (4) Nissan Juke (5) Toyota 86. New “old” cars alive and well in other parts of the world SOUTH Africans are no strangers to the idea of a car company building a specific model for somewhat longer than the usual four to seven year life cycle. At the end of the last decade we lost the Citi Golf, a Golf 1 that had been produced locally and tarted up too many times to mention since first rolling off the Uitenhage production line back in 1978. Let's not forget the Nissan 1400 (originally a Datsun 1200) that had an even longer life - 1971 to 2008. And do you care to remember the 1985 Mazda 323, 1988 Toyota Conquest/Tazz and 1990 Fiat Uno that all made it well past the millennial barrier? South Africa is by no means the only place in the world where cars are given a lease on life that's well beyond their international sell-by dates and it was quite amusing to search for other examples from around the world, such as the Jetta pictured here, and still in use in China. Bad news for hippies, though, is that Volkswagen's T2 Kombi - which is still made in Brazil - is likely to be killed off soon, due to safety regulations that make dual front airbags and ABS brakes mandatory in that country. VW says it would have to virtually design a new car to make that possible. It was also interesting to note that the second-generation Jetta is still alive and well in China, even sporting a facelift. iol.motoring.co.za

Up until they were discontinued, cars like VW Citygolf and Opel Corsa Lite, sold well. All the little technical niggles on these cars were sorted and the development costs for the manufacturers were fully paid off, so they could be built very cost effectively. Sure, issues such as ABS and Airbags have become the norm (and the law), but most of us grew up in these cars (original VW Beetle in my case) and we all survived. Aftermarket parts, both OEM and from third party suppliers, are always plentiful and cheap. Being a developing country, South Africa’s legislators missed an opportunity by not allowing manufacturers to continue supplying these cars. They should actively support them with tax and other incentives and should relax legislation regarding certain socalled “safety issues” such as airbags. And if looked after, such a car would literally last forever. In Cuba people are driving around in 1955 Chevy’s and 1957 Fords, that are immaculately maintained.
