Two Rivers Platinum lights up the night sky. As this paper contains the last mining and industry pages of the year, it is only fitting to end it with such a beautiful photo: Another year flew past and as TRP reflect back on 2012, some of the memories were truly awesome, but unfortunately there were some sad ones. Regrettably we have lost one of our colleagues earlier this year and the mere thought that there is a family without their loved one, especially during this festive Season, brings about a lot of sorrow and sadness. We firmly believe that we have learned out of this tragic event and are confident that we will achieve greater heights on our journey to Zero Harm. 2012 Has presented a number of challenges, and along with it also a number of opportunities for Two Rivers Platinum. They have reached some significant safety milestones. They have managed to withstand tough market conditions and they have exceeded their production targets, with various new records being set. TRP also had the privilege to see two very successful projects coming on line to further enhance an already prosperous mine. The Tailing Re-treatment Plant was commissioned and they completed the very successful Merensky Trial Mining Project. Management would like to thank all those involved in their operations, their families and the surrounding communities, for their hard work and dedication throughout the past year. They wish all employees and their loved ones a blessed and safe festive season. May they all receive the gift of love and peace that our Savior Jesus Christ brought upon us, and remember what this period is really about. Please travel safely and return with renewed energy and focus, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead in 2013. Let us together take Two Rivers to even greater successes next year and beyond!

Hael het veral Vrydag so groot soos gholfballe geval.

Duisende rande se skade is aangerig.

The storm of Sunday afternoon in Lydenburg had a definite tail and storm watchers were afraid of it becoming a full fledged tornado. Thank you to all the readers that brought in photo’s.

Die korrekte woord is ‘huidige gebeure’ of ‘tans’. Bloot net omdat Afrikaans my kos is en taal (hetsy in Engels of Afrikaans) ook my botter-en-brood is.

Skrootwerwe is ’n goeie voorbeeld.

Ek kom toe uiteindelik so 12h50 terug by die toonbank waar ek moet betaal. Ek ry so 13h45 terug. Kom loer gerus in of skakel Lynette by 083 441 4298.”

kan bekostig. Een waarvoor jou dogtertjie waarskynlik help betaal. Daarvan gepraat, jy weet hoeveel jou kind verdien en hoeveel hy by jou kry. Hy is dalk ’n smous of sy iets anders. Hoe lyk jou Polisie of werkskollega se lewenspeil? Regtig? Dis hoekom staatsamptenare wegkom met die twak. Jou probleem is jy is bang. En blind / doof. En gierig, want jy “score” dalk bietjie besigheid. Maar jy is self ’n slagoffer. En jy blameer die Polisie. Hoeveel van julle se huise / erwe of motors staan oop? Hoeveel handsakke / selfone lê oop en bloot? Hoe donker is jou huis / erf snags? Noem my paranoïes. Is reg. My medelandsburgers bring nie hulle kant nie, daarom is ek so. Help my, dan word ons almal weer “normaal”.

DRIVERS OF CHANGE GO BOLDLY WHERE OTHERS FEAR TO TREAD With their focus on maximum returns and profitability, conventional financial institutions as well as big corporates often exclude millions of people who need their services and products. Two Rivers Platinum strongly believes that as business entities, they cannot survive in an unhealthy environment. Understanding the needs of their immediate communities and integrating them into its long-term business planning, is not a “nice to have” but a business imperative. It is right - morally, ethically and in any other way. As a result, they recently established an Incubation Programme which targets young unemployed local entrepreneurs and develops them into sustainable entities with the potential to manufacture and supply the mine with various goods and services. They currently have 15 active local SMMEs in this programme and mostly owned by local youth aged between 18 and 35. “We strongly believe that investment in social good is about patient capital with a social imperative and the belief that if you do just enough of the right things for long enough, profitability and sustainability will be realized”, says the Business Leader of Two Rivers Platinum Mine. “Our business survival is integrally linked to our environment as well as to the souls of our immediate communities. To this end we committed to increase our total procurement spend to 12%, which will be focused on local SMMEs, because we believe that as we grow, the living conditions of the communities around the mining operations should be better off. This programme is part of our long-term growth strategy,” says Morne van Esch, the Financial Leader at Two Rivers Platinum. The current crop of SMMEs enlisted in the Two Rivers Platinum's Incubation Programme, including Mphele Manufacturing, is proof enough that if communities and the mines can work closely together, they can create more jobs and reduce the high rate of unemployment, which is currently prevalent in the local communities. Most of the SMMEs on their database came from the communities closer to the operation, with no or very little business background, With the proper business development set up, led by the Socio-Economic Development Department (SED) at the mine, as well as the support from the various Heads of Departments, they have realised tremendous growth within a short space of time and they also demonstrated lots of potential. By allocating specialized and core engineering as well as mining contracts to these young entities the mine has gone into areas where other operations and business operating in rural areas generally fear to tread. This can be credited to the transformation of its own supply chain and the understanding of the various challenges faced by the operations in the area, by key internal stakeholders and the passion as well as the commitment so far, displayed by the young entrepreneurs. “A community which experiences the highest unemployment rate and has the lowest levels of skills and literacy can only be enabled to fight itself out of the situation through these types of innovative thinking and thus ensuring a systematic eradication of poverty, which is entrenched within rural communities”, concluded Mr de Beer.

Cleaning up the Roads Samancor ECM continues to show that they care about the environment. On 22 May 2012, the SHEQ Department pulled up their sleeves and cleaned portions of the R36 Polokwane road. Paper, plastics, tins and bottles laying along the road were picked up. The purpose was to raise awareness amongst motorists using the road, that the side of the road is not a waste disposal site. The Theme was: “Clean-up the World”. Motorists passing the area showed some appreciation by hooting, waving hands etc. Everything went well as organised. We would like thank the Mangabane community members for volunteering on this day. At the end of the day the participants received t-shirts, cooler bags and voucher cards.

The annual Winterveld Festival was held on 24 & 25 August 2012. As previous years it was a huge success with a lot of entertainment for the whole family. MTE supported ECM again this year with their annual Mining show. The festival kicked off with a live show from Pieter Smith. Saturday morning was started with a CANSA walk for CANSA which was held to raise funds for cancer patients. Afterwards the crowds were entertained with the SoapBox Derby, where the team of Estates demonstrated “How not to” participate in a SoapBox Derby. SoapBox race was won by Tubatse Geckos and runners up Team Tweefontein. The potjiekos competition showed a lot of potential this year. Teams really made an effort with décor and team spirit. The winners was : Seafood: Barloworld, White meat: Pam Golding, Beef: Tyre Corporation, Game: Tubatse Jagters and Overall Winners: Tubatse Jagters. Pots were judged by old Springbok legends Kraynauw Otto and Pieter Hendriks. Entertainment for the rest of the day included Snotkop, Nadia Chrystal, Wasserfall and the band Havana Gas. Chaos entertained the crowd with a Strongman competition, and this is where the men were divided from the mice. Some ego's were busted and some morale's were boosted… The committee would like to thank everybody who participated and everybody who supported the festival. And a special word of thanks to the sponsors who made the day a reality, especially Forever Resorts Swadini and Blydepoort who sponsored some of the prizes.

67 minutes for Mandela Day Change was the gift given to all South Africans by Nelson Mandela. In the spirit of Madiba and his vision to spread justice and freedom for all, this was our opportunity to become part of a global movement for good. By becoming a Mandela Day Changemaker, we showed that actions speak louder than words, by devoting some of our time to make a difference in the lives of others that are less fortunate than us. On 18 July 2012 the volunteers of Samancor ECM set out to some of the schools in the area, and handed out soup and bread to 1 000 children. These schools included Mangabane, Makgakantshe, Dithamaga, DeBad and Tingeling. Some locals were also surprised when soup was handed out at the road works between Steelpoort and Lydenburg, and at Steelpoort station. This project was a huge success and we would like to encourage everybody to think of what you are going to do next year with your 67 minutes?

ECM leaving their mark on Road Safety ”ECM Cares” is one of our Values that each and every Samancor Chrome employee draws close to heart. The connecting road between Steelpoort and the Polokwane / Burgersfort Road is notorious for the high numbers of accidents and near misses as it had no road marking lines assisting in governing road users. Caring from a mining point of view, entails that we care for those whom we employ and those who are affected by our operations in the area. This responsibility for our actions and our actions affecting those around us also is strongly embedded in the employee duties in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act. Further in current day mining safety awareness, the Department of Mineral Resources requires mining license holders to assist in safety awareness and safety improvement of not only the mine worker, but also the person in the vicinity of the mine, including road users in that area. The painting of the road lines was done in close cooperation with the Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport (DRT). They participated in the meetings with the contractor to ensure that the plans, specifications, implementation plan and safety measures for affected road users were in line with the DRT specifications. The guidance and verification of the DRT was evident not only in the negotiations, but they were on site throughout to ensure that the indicated process, quality and accuracy of the markings were to the legislative standards. In an effort to ensure that road safety is tangible and to

improve the safety conditions of road users, Samancor Chrome ECM have a system in place to replace or repair damaged road signs and also have started clearing overgrowth on dangerous turns and bends to increase visibility. Ensuring that the road markings and required safety signs remains to standard, is only the first step in increasing the safety of road users on this road. The most important safety initiative is to get road users to comply with set legislative standards and adhere to the rules of the road. With Samancor Chrome taking responsibility to maintain the physical conditions of this road, road users are urged to be accountable for their actions on the road ensuring that their actions do not endanger the lives of other road users. In conclusion the marking of the road is a tangible symbol of Samancor Chrome caring for employees, neighbors and visitors to our area.

Samancor ECM invests in community and employees Throughout the year Samancor ECM has frequently placed articles and adverts in the Highlands Panorama News. From as early as January they wrote about ‘Tubatse Chrome making a difference’. Other articles ranged from ‘Samancor ECM invest in skills’, ‘Tubatse Chrome Lab’, ‘Community involvement at Tubatse Chrome’ and many more articles throughout the year. One of their bigger projects was the Shavathon. Samancor has yet again stressed the fact that they help the community where possible, always put their employees first and care for the people of South Africa.

Samancor Chrome's history goes back as far as 1975, when it was established as a result of a merger between SA Manganese Ltd and Amcor Ltd. SA Manganese was formed in 1926 to mine manganese ore in the Northern Cape. Amcor was established in 1937 to exploit mineral deposits for the steel industry and to process those minerals into ferralloys. Samancor was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange until 1998 when the minority shareholders were bought out by the then majority shareholders, Billiton and Anglo American. This resulted in the delisting of the company and shareholding of 60% African Metals Ltd (a BHPB Company) and 40% Anglo South Africa Capital (Proprietary) Ltd (an Anglo American company). Samancor then consisted of chrome and manganese operations and stainless steel investments with marketing and distribution arrangements via structures held wholly and indirectly by BHPB and Anglo American. Towards the end of 2004, bids were invited for the purchase of Samancor Chrome. The successful bidder, the Kermas Group, effectively took over the operations from 1 June 2005. In November 2009 International Mineral Resources (IMR) became the majority shareholder in Samancor Chrome Limited with a 70% direct shareholding in the holding company, Samancor Chrome Holdings (Pty) Limited. South Africa currently supplies in excess of 50% of worldwide charge chrome demand. This position can be ascribed to the following factors: The Bushveld Igneous Complex, which contains nearly 70% of the estimated world reserves of chromite; The development, in the early sixties, of the AOD process which facilitated the introduction of South African charge chrome into the stainless steel industry; and Historically cheap power, driven by the existence of extensive steam coal reserves. Over 80% of Samancor Chrome's chrome ore output is consumed in the production of ferrochrome in South Africa. The remainder of the ore is exported. Some 85% of chrome alloy production is exported to stainless steel producers across the globe. Stainless steel, a steel alloy, typically contains 18% chrome and 8% nickel. The chrome content in stainless steel gives it its luster, shiny appearance and resistance to corrosion. Our outputs include the chrome ore extracted

by our mines and chrome alloys produced by our plants. Samancor Chrome's five fully integrated and self-reliant chrome alloy plants have a combined annual production capacity of more than one million tons of alloy, including charge chrome, intermediate carbon ferrochrome (IC3), low-carbon ferrochrome and ferrosilicon chrome. Our mining operations' total combined ore resources exceed 450 million tons, calculated to a depth of 300 metres, with an annual production capacity of between five and ten million tons. The company's total chromite resources exceed 650 million tons and are expected to support current mining activity for well over 200 years at the current rate of extraction. Some ores and concentrates are exported, but main allotments are destined for conversion into ferrochrome at the alloy plants. Samancor Chrome's core business is the mining and smelting of chrome ore. With an annual capacity of some one million tons, Samancor Chrome is one of the largest integrated ferrochrome producers in the world. We produce three grades of ferrochrome, namely charge chrome, intermediate carbon ferrochrome and low carbon ferrochrome, each used in different areas of the stainless steel smelting process. Samancor Chrome is a private company which recently underwent a change of ownership: previous shareholders BHP Billiton (60% ownership) and Anglo American (40% ownership) sold the company to the Kermas Group in June 2005 after evaluating several offers to arrive at the option promising the most prosperous future for the company and the best value for shareholders. In November 2009 International Mineral Resources (IMR) became the majority shareholder with a 70% direct shareholding in the holding company, Samancor Chrome Holdings (Pty) Limited. Three ferrochrome plants and two chrome ore mining complexes operate as separate business units in different locations in South Africa: Western Chrome Mines in the Rustenburg area in the North West Province. Eastern Chrome Mines near the Lydenburg / Steelpoort area of the Limpopo Province. Ferrometals near eMalahleni, Mpumalanga Province. Middelburg Ferrochrome and Middelburg Te c h n o c h r o m e n e a r M i d d e l b u r g , Mpumalanga Province. Tubatse Ferrochrome in the Lydenburg / Steelpoort area of the Limpopo Province. Samancor Chrome is the second largest ferrochrome producer in the world, producing, subject to market conditions, in excess of 1 million metric tonnes (Mt) of charge chrome, approximately 70 thousand metric tonnes (Kt) of Intermediate Carbon Ferrochrome, and some 40 Kt of Low C a r b o n Ferrochrome per annum. In addition, Samancor Chrome sells more than 700 Kt of chrome ore per annum on the export market.

hromite operations at the Dwarsrivier Mine form part of the Chrome Ores & Alloys of Assmang Limited. The mine is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier (372KT), approximately 30 kilometres from Steelpoort and 60 kilometres from Lydenburg, in the Mpumalanga province in South Africa. Located at longitude 30°05'00”E / latitude 24°59'00”S, Assmang purchased the farm from Gold Fields Limited, together with all surface and mineral rights in October 1998. Neighbouring properties to the north and south of Dwarsrivier had existing chrome mining operations at the time of purchase. The feasibility study of the plant, tailings dam and designs for the open-cast and underground mines then commenced. After the completion of the feasibility study, approval to proceed with the final design and construction work was given in July 1999.

All the chromite production from Dwarsrivier Mine is sourced from underground. Chromite used to be obtained from the open-cast mining areas at a rate of approximately 0.9 million tons per year; however these reserves were exhausted in 2005. Underground mining commenced in 2005 at a rate of 1.2 million tons Run of Mine (ROM) per year. Current underground design capacity is 120,000 tons per month ROM. The Dwarsrivier Mine is specifically geared to deliver high quality metallurgical grade chromite to the Machadodorp Works. In addition, the plant has been designed to produce chemical grade products. The mine has ISO9001/2008 and ISO14001/2004 certification. The Dwarsrivier Mine is situated in the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex, which comprises persistent layers of mafic and ultramafic rocks, containing the world's largest known resources of platinum group metals, chromium and vanadium. The mafic rocks termed the Rustenburg Layered Suite, are approximately 8 kilometres thick in the Eastern Lobe, and are divided formally into five zones. The rocks of the Marginal Zone at the base of the succession consist mainly of pyroxenites with some dunites and harzburgites. Above the Marginal Zone, the Lower Zone comprises mainly pyroxenites, harzburgites and dunite, and is present only in the northern part of the Eastern Lobe, and only as far south as Steelpoort. The appearance of chromitite layers marks the start of the Critical Zone, economically the most important zone. The layers are grouped into three sets termed the Lower, Middle and Upper groups. The sixth chromitite seam in the Lower Group (LG6), is an important source of chromite ore and is the ore body being mined at the Dwarsrivier Mine. In the Eastern Lobe, in the vicinity of Dwarsrivier, the strike is nearly north-south, with a dip of approximately 10 degrees towards the west. Average thickness of the LG6 seam is about 1,86 metres in the Dwarsrivier area. Pipe-like dunite intrusions are evident in the area, as well as dolerite dykes that on average strike northeastsouthwest. No significant grade variation is evident, especially not vertically in the ore seam. Small, insignificant regional variations do, however, exist. Dwarsrivier Mine currently operates with a complement of 1,165 employees. In addition, certain functions such as tailings dam operations, as well as security services, health services, garden services and office cleaning services are outsourced. The mine is currently developing a North shaft which, when complete, will add a further 80,000 tons of ROM material per month to the current capacity. The beneficiation plant will be expanded to cater for the additional feed. (www.assmang.co.za)

Overview of Xstrata Eastern Mines • The wholly-owned Helena Chrome Mine lies to the south of Xstrata's Thorncliffe Chrome Mine on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex. Mining the MG1 ore body, the mine consists of a four barrel decline shaft system sunk on reef. The shaft system produces 80 000 tons per month using a mechanised bord-and-pillar mining method and is currently ramping up to 100 000 tons per month. Ore will be transported to the Helena Plant by means of overland conveyors. The initial development of the Helena shaft portal commenced in November 2004. Shaft sinking of the four barrels continued, which allowed the first stoping from Helena shaft in early 2005. The mine continues to ramp up to steady state production of 100 000 tons per month. Helena consists of a single 100 000 ton production shaft which equates to 1.2 million tons per annum production capacity. •Xstrata’s wholly-owned Thorncliffe Chrome Mine lies to the north of Xstrata’s Helena Chrome Mine on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex. Mining the MG1 ore body, the mine consists of a four barrel decline shaft system sunk on a reef. The shaft system produces between 100,000 and 110,000 tons per month using a mechanised bord-and-pillar mining method, and ore is transported to the Thorncliffe Plant by overland conveyors. The initial development of the Thorncliffe shaft portal commenced in March 1997. The reef that is mined is the MG1, mined at a stoping width of between 2 m and 2.2 m with very little external waste. In the reef itself, lenses of waste are encountered, which give a level of dilution, which usually does not exceed seven per cent. Mining takes place using a mechanised bord-and-pillar mining method. The reef strikes from south to north and dips at about 12°. However, mining is on an apparent dip of nine degrees. Access to the mine is via a set of twin declines. Thorncliffe produces between 100,000 tonnes and 110,000 tonnes per month run-of-mine (ROM), which is fed through the mine plant, where processing yields a 70% recovery. This equates to between 1,440 kt per annum. • Xstrata’s Lydenburg operation is located in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, which is approximately 300km north east of Johannesburg. The plant produces granulated and lumpy ferrochrome which is marketed to producers of stainless and special steel. Lydenburg Works commenced production in 1977, and was taken over by Chrome Corp in 1997. It became an Xstrata operation in 1998. Lydenburg Chrome operation was the first Xstrata operation to utilise the leading energyefficient Premus technology. Xstrata Lydenburg’s ore is obtained from other Xstrata chrome mines in the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex, such as Xstrata Helena and Xstrata Thorncliffe. • Lion Ferrochrome is the latest addition to Xstrata’s chrome division which utilises Xstrata’s Premus technology for the production of low silicon ferrochrome. Premus is the most sophisticated, competitive and technologically advanced process available for the production of ferrochrome. The process is able to maximise resource utilisation by utilising low cost reductants and fine ores whilst being the most environmentally friendly practice available for the production of ferrochrome. The plant is supplied with ore from Xstrata Eastern Chrome mines i.e. Thorncliffe, Helena & Mototolo which is a joint venture between Xstrata and Anglo situated 22 kilometres from the smelter. Xstrata Lion was a brown field project that utilized the infrastructure of the decommissioned Vantech vanadium plant. Construction started on the 14th of December 2004 and was executed by Xstrata alloys projects department and commissioned during the third quarter 2006. First product was despatched to customers early in the fourth quarter 2006. The project was completed within budgeted costs and time frames.

SEVEN Lydenburg Enduro Riders battled the (in)famous Roof of Africa in Lesotho over the past weekend. The race consisted of three days of gruelling Extreme Enduro riding in the Maluti mountains of Lesotho. There were 3 categories: Intermediate, Expert and Pro which could be entered. International riders like Graham Jarvis, unbeaten for the last 18 months, and the well-loved Kiwi, Chris Birch were also at the starting line. Jarvis, 2011 winner was dethroned by the 16 year-old South African, Wade Young, (see story on page 21) with our very own locally known rider, Altus de Wet (from Montague) finishing in second place in the Pro category. The challenges at the roof include passes like “Pressure Cooker”, “Push Me Pass”, “Free Fall” and other more unmentionable names which the riders will all deem apt for the terrain. It all started in Maseru with “Round-The-Houses” with dirt tyres on tarred roads. This very exciting spectating section was won by South African Dakar rider, Darryl Curtis. Then the first day's racing followed, consisting of a“Time Trial”, which determined starting positions for day two. Lydenburg riders Brett and Brendan “Sakkie” Swanevelder, Barries “Guru” Barnard, Johan “Gutzeit” Janse van Rensburg, and cousins Johan “Engineer” van der Merwe and Stephan “Cousin” van der Merwe all braved the routes on KTM's while Ivan Morse took on the challenge with his Yamaha. They all finished their full distances for day 1 and 2. Brett Swanevelder and Johan van der Merwe had to retire due to injury. Ivan finished 2 days of the Pro class and the Expert route on the third day, walking away with a silver medal. Barries Barnard started his third day with a hamstring tear, but endured with great character and finished the Expert Silver medal before the cut-off time. There were 185 riders in this category, in which Johan “Gutzeit” Janse van Rensburg finished his Silver in an incredible 35th position, and Stephan van der Merwe came in for a flying th Silver finish in 10 position. Other local favourites included Pieter Botha from Nelspruit, who also achieved a silver medal, and Rian Ackerman, the most sought after gold finish. All the riders would like to acknowledge and thank their families and friends as well as the Lydenburg Honda / KTM team for their invaluable support. Joey Van Der Merwe.

Free vehicle check from Hi-Q can ensure safe holiday

Andre Coetzee.

IN the spirit of a safe and carefree festive season, the best way to prevent on-road hassles like a flat tyre, or even a traumatic accident, is to take your vehicle for a safety check offered as a free service by countrywide tyre fitment network Hi-Q. You'll be spending time on the road and it is wise to do this as safely as possible. Hi-Q Communications Manager Lize Hayward said motorists put their trust in Hi-Q stores and the network's complimentary safety check was one way of enhancing their vehicle safety. “Tyres may look fine, but they will be markedly safer, perform better and be more fuel efficient if they are optimally balanced and correctly inflated. In fact, running a tyre just 20 per cent under-inflated could increase fuel consumption by as much as 10 per cent! That's a lot to pay for just a little fresh air!” Hayward explained that an under-inflated tyre deflects more energy, increasing rolling resistance and making the vehicle less fuel efficient. “It also reduces the tread life of the tyre, which means you may have to replace it sooner than necessary. Most importantly though, it is plain dangerous. If tyres are incorrectly inflated, the vehicle won't accelerate, brake or steer properly. Safety devices like antilock braking systems may not function properly – and driving an under-inflated or overloaded tyre at high speeds, especially on a hot summer day, increases the risk of a dangerous blow-out. “They will perform the 10-point safety check on your vehicle. This entails checking all four tyres plus the spare for tread depth and pressure, the front and rear shock absorbers, the brake pads, discs and fluid, as well as the battery, exhaust and wiper blades. “Should any of the vehicle checks highlight a worn or faulty part, the technician will recommend the correct course of action. Hi-Q stores are one-stop fitment and undercarriage parts stockists, so customers can get the problem sorted out and be back on the road again safely and quickly. “This comprehensive check is an absolutely free service we offer motorists. Road safety is a key driver behind the Hi-Q brand. It provides our customers with the peace of mind that comes from knowing they have taken responsibility for their own and their families' road safety.” Good vehicle maintenance also reduces the impact of fuel emissions into the atmosphere, so by ensuring the health of your car, you will also be contributing to the freshness of our air. Local motorsport could become a reality WITH local entrepreneurs Charlie and Arista Rothman initiating a meeting at Rooikat Park on Tuesday 4 December, the plan is to establish an oval track as well as a go kart track locally, for motorsport fans. Although such a facility would be expensive, with proper planning it could be developed over time. The possibilities are endless: Think of an oval track, the go kart track and one could easily add an obstacle track for 4x4’s, offroad (motocross) bikes and quads. One needs some earthmoving equipment to make a good start and companies could become involved sponsoring stands for spectators, corners, humps etc. etc. A few good corporate sponsorships should get the ball rolling. For the story and the advert, refer to page 17. Come on all you petrolheads, lets attend the meeting.

Youngest rider ever wins the “Roof of Africa” - on a Yamaha FEVER Criterion Yamaha's Wade Young (16 years old and riding a Yamaha YZ 250 F) made history this past weekend when he, against all the odds, became the youngest winner of the Roof of Africa, renowned as one of the toughest extreme enduro's in the world. Young, in his first ever attempt at the Roof of Africa, took on the world's best extreme enduro riders, including the likes of U.K.'s Graham Jarvis, who has virtually won every extreme enduro around the globe in the last two years and was the defending 2011 Roof of Africa winner, and beat them by over 11 minutes at the end of the three day, 492km long, epic held in the Maluti Mountains of Lesotho. The first day of racing, which is made up of the “Round the Houses” race followed by a 60km time trial, which determines starting positions for the main race beginning on the Friday, saw Young finish second behind fellow Yamaha rider Marc Torlage (Proudly Bidvest Yamaha YZ 290 F) and just ahead of Torlage's Proudly Bidvest Yamaha team mate Kenny Gilbert (YZ 290 F) - the trio giving Yamaha a clean sweep of the Day 1 podium. Young took over the lead from Torlage early on in the Friday racing section of some 235km's and quickly built up a ten minute lead, which he maintained right through to the finish line on Saturday afternoon. Torlage, suffering from a badly sprained left thumb, dropped down the order to as low as eleventh position at one stage, but showed true guts and determination to fight back to a well deserved fifth overall by the Saturday finish line. His team mate, Kenny Gilbert, also fought back from suffering

from severe dehydration on Friday to cross the Saturday finish line in sixth position. The Yamaha trio's collective effort also secured the Manufacturers Trophy for Yamaha!! In the Expert class (for riders attempting 75% of the race route) Yamaha took a clean sweep of the winner's podium with Gary Barton (Bell Equipment/LCS Yamaha YZ 250) taking the class victory ahead of Faan van Deventer (Pa Ma Racing Yamaha YZ 250 F) and Stephen Landman on board a Liquorland Yamaha WR 2450 F. So, Yamaha leave the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho basking in the euphoria of victory, holding our trophies up high and chests swollen with pride at the success of our riders and reliability and race prowess of our bikes. The Maluti Mountains have indeed been painted bright blue in 2012!!! By email Small wonder my son, who rides a BMW F800GS (and also one of two Yamaha DT 175’s in the family) calls a Yamaha a “Landcruiser” on two wheels! Andre Coetzee

FOR the last six years Yamaha distributors South Africa has offered a remarkable race support program to any Yamaha rider entering into the gruelling Roof of Africa held annually in Lesotho. The nature of this three day event places huge strain on both bike and body, and riders not only have to worry about racing their bikes for three solid days, but also have to concern themselves with the re-preparation of their bike each evening for the following day's onslaught into the Maluti Mountains. As a Yamaha rider entering the Roof of Africa, this problem is taken care of by the Yamaha Factory Support Program. A massive Yamaha pit is set up in the car park of the Maseru Sun, and with a team of qualified Yamaha mechanics and assistants even those riders that enter the event just to finish and achieve their own personal goals are treated like a pro rider. Bikes are dropped off at the Yamaha wash bay (powered by POWASOL), job cards are made out, and the rider then can leave to take care of his nutrition and rest needs, confident in knowing that in the morning his bike will be waiting, fully prepared for the days racing ahead. The Yamaha Factory Support team ensure that all bikes are cleaned, serviced, repaired, tyre changes etc., as per the rider's request. And all of this is provided free of charge to the loyal Yamaha rider. The only thing that a rider could potentially be billed for is his consumption of spare

parts (which enjoy a 30% discount off retail pricing at the race) and tyres/mousses/tubes etc. All labour and lubrication products are provided for as part of the free service offered by Yamaha. This year, Metzeler tyres provided support for the tyre changing functions, whilst Mazda provided three Mazda BT50 double cab 4x4's to transport the Yamaha Factory Support crew to and from Lesotho, as well as getting those crews out to the various service points over the three days of the race, because the Yamaha Factory Support effort is not just limited to the “end of the racing day” support, but continues onto the various service points on the race track. This awesome service is truly welcomed by the Yamaha Roof of Africa entrant's - and envied by those that are not on Yamaha's, as the below testimonials attest to: “Just wanted to say what an excellent service I experienced from Yamaha at the Roof on Friday. Bike had a few niggles after Friday. You guys took care of everything and I finished Expert on Saturday. Extremely impressed!! Special thanks must go to Brad – awesome service! Well done to Yamaha. This sort of service will keep me riding one. Cheers” Adriaan Otto via e-mail. “Thank you for Yamaha's fantastic support, working late in to the night getting our bikes ready, you guys are the best!!!” – Izak Mans via Facebook. There you have it. All the more reason to ride a Yamaha!! By email

Photo of the Month Competition

O

ver this past weekend, 24 and 25 November 2012, the Democratic Alliance held its fifth Federal Congress. This Congress was the largest and most diverse DA congress in the history of our party and was attended by approximately 1650 delegates from across South Africa. The Federal Congress is the DA's highest decision making body and is tasked with the responsibility of electing our Federal Leadership, making policy and reviewing the DA constitution. The Federal Congress also recognises the achievements and performance of individuals and structures within the party. I am indeed proud that this year, Mpumalanga won the award as the Province of the Year for 2012. We were recognised for “...the province's consistently superb operational performance, unshakable commitment to the Party programme of action, leadership by example, and unprecedented by-election breakthroughs in ruling party strongholds.” This award proves once again that we are on the right track to growing the DA in Mpumalanga, and it is pleasing that our collective efforts have been recognised nationally. In accepting the award on behalf of our delegates, I dedicated it to all our members, public representatives and staff. While this award is a culmination of a massive effort by the DA Mpumalanga to grow our party, we would not have been able to do so without the support of the voting public. Therefore, on behalf of every DA member and public representative I would like to express my sincere thanks to the residents and voters of Mpumalanga for supporting us and working with us in communities across the province. We do not work for ourselves, but are committed to serving the people of our province. This award is an inspiration to all in the DA Mpumalanga and serves as a motivation to work even harder to bring true freedom to all the people of Mpumalanga. We are no longer merely the opposition or watchdog of the ruling party, we are a government in waiting. We will work tirelessly to bring to the people of Mpumalanga true freedom which they can use. Willie Venter.

The 2012 competition has closed. I will announce the monthly winners within the coming weeks, followed by the overall winners. Thank you for all the entries, great photo’s and taking part in the competition. It was once again a huge success. The Highlands Panorama News thanks the sponsors Longtom SuperSPAR, Konica Photo Express and PNA. All the photo’s that were published as competition photo’s in 2012 will be considered. ~ Editor Michelle Boshoff

3000Km Road Trip

22 December at Skhila The Mashishing Half Marathon at Skhila outside Lydenburg will consist of the following distances: 5km walkers to start at 07:30 and 10km and 21.1km to start at 07:00. The steering committee of the Mashishing Marathon Club hopes that this half marathon will become an annual event. The race will start and finish at Skhila stadium. The first five children who finishes the 21.2km will receive a free 2013 licence for road runners. The first five children finished with the 10km will also receive this licence from Mr Sipho Mnisi. Mr Sipho Mnisi has 15 licences to give away. The entry fee for the 21.1km is R20, R10 for the 10km and R5 for the 5km (walkers). Bring all the children to enjoy themselves at the marathon. It is important for them to get running experience. The organisers hopes that the Lydenburg community, Mashishing, Skhila and Kellysville will assist them with sponsorship (i.e. water bottles) for the children and that they will be able to hold a Christmas function after the race. For more information phone Sipho at 073 121 8890 or 072 894 1958.

150 Cars, 5 Days, 3000Km, One BIG Party! A number of super car or classic car rallies currently run in South Africa. All these rallies have one thing in common: they are popular and very, very exclusive. You have to have a lot of money, for the most part you have to own an exclusive super car, or belong to some kind of club. The Gumboot Rally offers the same thrills and exclusive experience for a very affordable entry fee of just R 5000.00 per vehicle. The name Gumboot was chosen to give the rally a uniquely South African flavour. The Gumboot rally is similar yet very different in one respect; that it allows for everyday citizens with everyday normal cars to also partake in a similar event for an affordable experience. The event is aimed at fun and exploration of South Africa. It is an annual event and every year a different route will be taken to complete the rally. With a very affordable entry fee, almost anyone can enter for the fun, entertainment and excitement. It will be the biggest such event in South Africa, with official timing for each vehicle or participant. As provided by the official technology and timing sponsor – NETEXCHANGE. With 150 entries, it makes the rally much more accessible. It is for everyone! Anyone with a legal road vehicle can enter. Although some entries will be super cars and classic cars in order to maintain some form of show and spectacle some feel of exclusiveness yet available to those who will normally not be able to participate in such an event, most entries will be for the general public. In this way some form of exclusivity is maintained for everyone to enjoy. Everyone will be able to do a rally alongside super cars and classic cars. Also with the limited amount of entry spots available exclusivity is ensured. The aim of the Gumboot rally is to enable everyone to experience the thrill of competing in such exclusive events. A great bonding experience for parents and children, or just a fun 5 day holiday exploring South Africa. The Gumboot Rally is a fun rally open to the general public with maximum of 150 entries. Entries are divided into 4 categories. Super/Hyper/Sports cars in super car class. Classic cars (older than 40 years) in classic class. Everyday vehicles for general public under general class. There will also be a separate class for motorcycles. The general class will be open for any legal road going vehicle. 4 people per car maximum allowed. Each entrant will receive a welcome and info pack

Compac CQ58 Notebook Pmx24 On Standard My Gig 1

(Goodies Box) delivered to their address after the entry fee has been paid. A route of approximately 3000km will be covered over a 5 day period, with a start point and end point. The Gumboot Rally will be an endurance event, but with a strong emphasis on safety and responsible driving. There will be 6 check points (including start and finish) over the course of the rally. Driving will only be between 7AM and 8PM. You can leave the bivouac at 7AM earliest, but must check in at the next check point bivouac by 8PM. Checks and timing will then be recorded (by NetExchange) for each participant in their respective classes. All participants can drive at their own pace. If you are late for the afternoon events at each checkpoint, don't worry there is still the party in the main tent. Participants can take their own route to the next checkpoint, in order to outwit the other participants and reach the checkpoint first. Disregard of any traffic laws is not encouraged (As stated in our rules on the website). Getting a traffic fine will result in time penalties for participants and/or disqualification. Each checkpoint will have some form of event that will include the more exclusive cars, and some for the brave. Also events for our official charity partner – The Reach For A Dream Foundation – there will be fund raising events. Entertainment will be available at each check point for a bit of fun each evening, with updates on the daily happenings during the rally. All of these events and entertainment will be free of charge for all participants and their passengers This will be a rally aimed at having fun while exploring our beautiful country. It is not a race. At each checkpoint bivouac there will be an official tent for timing and gatherings with the daily news of the event. Enough space will be provided for every entrant to put up a tent if they would like to do so. Other accommodation will be for the entrants own costs. Preferred rates have been arranged with our Hotel and accommodation partner –Tsogo Sun Hotels. At the last checkpoint there will be a “send off” party with entertainment and the trophies for the event will be announced. Various fun trophies and prizes will be handed out. Fastest legal completion time in each class will win free entry into the next Gumboot rally (Event of their choice as 3 different events are planned each year). The winner of each class will also receive the NUMBER 1 sticker for the next event. More information is available on the website www.gumbootrally.co.za
