he 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children is a United Nations Campaign, which takes place annually from the 25th November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to the 10th December (International Human Rights Day). This year marks the 13th anniversary of the National Campaign which began in 1999. Various initiatives have been put in place by Government to address violence against women and children namely: • The Domestic Violence Act, 1998 was enacted to afford survivors of violence maximum protection from domestic abuse. Women, often being at the receiving end of domestic violence, now have a legal recourse that will ensure their protection.
• The National Council Against Gender Based Violence (NCAGBV) to provide strategic leadership, coordination and management of gender-based violence initiatives in South Africa was established. • The Children's Act, 2005 and Children's Amendment Act, 2007 were enacted to, among other things, protect a child from maltreatment, neglect, abuse or degradation. • The South African Police Service (SAPS) Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units with a special focus on crimes that are prevalent amongst vulnerable groups. • The improvement of infrastructure such as victim friendly rooms at police stations, Thuthuzela care centres, domestic violence shelters and places of safety throughout the country. Despite South Africa's constitutional and legislative protection, violence
based on gender and sexual orientation, remains at unacceptable levels. The violence takes different forms such as sexual harassment, abuse, assault, rape, domestic violence and other practices that are
harmful to women and children. The SAPS will ensure, at all times and in cooperation with other role players, that these criminals are arrested and convicted of crimes against women and children. Don't Look Away – Act Against Abuse”

A story of decay A local resident and businessman Alit Fourie decided to take photo’s of every single broken thing and hazardous situation in Lydenburg. It was an eye opener as many residents ‘over look’ all the problems. Because we get so used to it we don’t see it any more. Hierdie jaar was geen uitsondering nie en hul keuse het geval op Me Biance Bell. Sy is deur die Lydenburg Hoërskool vereer vir Beste Wiskunde Geletterdheid leerder 2012, onderskeidings in Geografie, LO en Wiskunde Geletterdheid, Erepenning (Gr 8 Gr 12 bo 65% gemiddeld elke jaar), merietekleure (matrikulant bo 75% gemiddeld). By die Boogskiet het sy vanjaar eerste onder die Senior Meisies Provinsiaal, tweede Algeheel Provinsiaal en veertiende Senior Meisies Nasionaal geïndig. Frik Rousseau (VF+ Leier) wil graag van die geleentheid gebruik maak om Biance alle sterkte toe te wens met haar studies volgende jaar by Potchefstroom Universiteit. En ja, ek was stomgeslaan. Sy het alle verwagtinge oortref. Alle kritici se monde gesnoer. Suid-Afrika se vlag omhoog gehou en alles gesê wat sy wou. Gevloek soos sy wou en almal het gejuig. Jip, ek was daar. Tussen die 60 000 mense. Dit was nie vir diegene met ’n swak hart nie. Van boerseuns met pienk pruike, tot ‘rockers’, elke geslag, elke voorkeur en afkeur is verteenwoordig. Dis nou een plek waar enigiemand met gemak ’n pienk pruik kon opsit of met ’n tutu uit die huis gaan want haar liedjie sê immers: “I was born this way.” Ag die klomp eng mense wat niks gewoond is nie, het my so geirriteer, voor en na die vertoning. “Uit die bose, wat ’n onding.”Regtig mense, word wakker dis 2012. not a joke. It is not an option. It is not a factor of choosing to stop or not. You need to stop, look around and then pull away. Motorcycle riders are especially guilty. I drive around the whole day in Lydenburg and am shocked by the way people use the traffic signs. They are there for a reason. We all get our drivers licenses for to a reason too. Because there are rules in life. Please don’t kill someone or cause an accident because you could have waited for a few seconds. Stop.

Arbeidsonrus op plase BETOGINGS en stakings deur onrus stokers en moontlik plaaswerkers soos wat dit in die Wes Kaap voorgekom het, mag op 4 Desember 2012 weer voortgesit word en moontlik ook na ander provinsies uitbrei. Die gewelddadige en kriminele aard van die stakings wat reeds voorgekom het, het die Veiligheidspan van die Ad Hoc Komitee van AfriForum genoop om riglyne te formuleer met die aanbeveling dat boere tydig voorsorgmaatreëls moet tref om nie onkant betrap te word nie. • Bespreek die plaaslike situasie vroegtydig met bure om 'n gemeenskaplike siening te ontwikkel en verseker dat telefoonnommers uitgeruil word. • Waar daar radionetwerke bestaan, moet dit optimaal benut word aangesien talle lede van die netwerk gelyktydig gewaarsku en geaktiveer kan word. • Skakel met die plaaslike SAPD met die versoek dat inligting oor moontlike optredes verlang word en dat tydige tussenbeidetrede verwag word sou lewens en/of eiendom deur geweldadige stakings bedreig word. Vra direkte telefoonnommers van bevelvoerders, om in noodgevalle te gebruik. Skep 'n informele weerbaarheidstruktuur wat binne die wet kan omsien na die veiligheid van die plaasgemeenskap om sodoende lewens en eiendom te beveilig. Sodanige vermoë behoort vir 'n reaksievermoë voorsiening te maak om mede boere wat bedreig word van hulp en bystand te wees. Maak ook voorsiening om te verseker dat vroue, kinders en bejaardes in 'n plek van veiligheid versamel en beveilig word. • Identifiseer persone wat oor die vermoë beskik om koelkop namens geteikende boere te kan onderhandel om sodoende kortsigtige emosionele reaksies te minimiseer. Die gebruik van 'n plaaslike regspraktisyn kan bydra dat optredes in ooreenstemming met wetsbepalings kan geskied. • Verseker dat die verloop van gebeure deeglik chronologies geboekstaaf word en dat beeldmateriaal (hetsy stil- of videomateriaal) waarop aanhitsers, leiers en wetsoortreders duidelik identifiseerbaar is, geneem word. Selfone werk ook goed. • Identifiseer alternatiewe arbeidsbronne vir gebruik waar kritiese oestye moontlik deur stakings onderbreek kan word. • Tref voorsorgmaatreëls deur bure op bystand te hou, vir vinnige reaksie met brandbestryding en eerstehulptassies. Verseker dat die regsvereistes ten opsigte van noodweer en die beveiliging van privaateiendom in eenvoudige terme aan almal bekend is en dat dit verstaan word. Alle geweld en intimidasie moet as misdadigheid hanteer word, ongeag of dit deur opstokers aangestig word, en of dit polities van aard mag wees.

Security Guidelines for farms PROTESTS and strikes by activists and possibly also farm workers similar to what has occured in the Western Cape, may continue and also occur in other provinces after 4 December 2012. The violent and criminal nature of these strikes caused the Safety- and Security Team of the Ad Hoc Committee from AfriForum, to formulate guidelines and to recommend to farmers to implement timely precautionary measures, avoiding being surprised by possible future developments. Guidelines: Discuss the local situation with neighbours and friends to gain a common understanding and to exchange contact numbers of all involved including local key SAPS personnel, security companies, etc. Where radio networks exist, such networks should be optimally utilised as it enables warning a number of people simultaneously. Liaise with the local SAPS with the request that timely intelligence of pending strike action be made available, thus ensuring police intervention to protect life and property. Collect direct contact numbers of SAPS commanders for use in imergencies; Create a voluntary self-
defence structure capable of operating within the perameters of the law to contribute to the safety and security of the farming community. Such a capability should make provision for neighbouring farmers to participate in a reaction component when fellow farmers are threatened and also the ability to ensure the safety of women, children and senior citizens in a place of safety; Identify capable and cool-headed individuals to negotiate on behalf of targeted farmers thus minimising the possiblity of short-sighted emotional reaction. Utlising a legal practioner in this manner could contribute to ensure appropriate actions within the parameters of the law; Ensure that a chronological record of proceedings is kept supported by visual evidence (still- or video material) of agitators, leaders and transgressors of the law thus making identification possible. Cell phones can be used. Unity is strength. Get involved in your local organised agriculture structure right now.

Die Strelitzia-Tak van die VLU het ’n baie aangename en bedrywige jaar op ’n ewe aangename wyse afgesluit en daarmee saam hul 40ste bestaansjaar gevier. Strelitzia-Tak sluit die jaar af met 'n baie gesellige aandjie en van die begin af het daar 'n heerlike atmosfeer geheers. Die geleentheid was aangebied by Villa Afrique en deur meeste dames bygewoon. Lucy Swanepoel het die dames bedank vir hul groot opofferinge en hul werksaamhede gedurende die afgelope jaar onder die bekwame leidig van hul voorsitster, Petro Botha. ATGATT Read this, even if you think you are clever IN recent years responsible motorcyclists have adopted the acronym ATGATT "all the gear, all the time". Even if you're just going round to the corner shop for some milk, at the very least you wear closed shoes, jeans, gloves and a helmet. And if you think that sounds paranoid, bear in mind that most accidents - car or bike happen within four kilometres of home, and that you run the same risk of some idiot jumping a stop street and slamming into you at the bottom of the street where you live as you do on that once-a-year trip to the other end of the country.

And the only thing that kept the child from falling between the driver and the steering wheel as he turned across my bows was the driver's strategically outflung arm! All it would have taken was a misjudged kerb, or a dog running out into the street, for that toddler to smash his face on the dashboard or, worse still, go through the windshield. And, to be very selfish for a moment, just how do you go home and explain that to the kid's mother? Low-speed accidents can be just as deadly for unrestrained small passengers as freeway crashes. But all of this applies as much to car drivers as it does to bikers, which brings me to the point of this rant. The other day I was on my way to the local garage to fill up the bike (and wearing full gear, I might add) when I came to a stop street a couple of blocks from my home and gave way to an oncoming car. Granted, he was travelling at little more than walking pace, but the driver wasn't wearing a seat belt and, standing completely unsecured on the front passenger seat,

Purely out of self-interest, you owe it to yourself never to start your car unless every person in it is wearing a seat belt or securely strapped into a child seat of the appropriate size for their age, even (no, make that especially) if you're just going to the corner shop. Because, if you get it wrong, you will have to live with the consequences for the rest of your life, every time you look in a mirror or into the eyes of that child's mother. Every day I'm accused of being irresponsible, just because I'm a biker. I have to put up with insults and derision because bikers are seen as deliberately courting danger. But few bikers would dream of riding anywhere without a helmet and fewer still would let a child do so. And then I see a four-year-old standing on the front passenger seat of a moving car and I have to ask, who's being irresponsible now?

Adapting to your bike

Whenever we're out testing a laid-back cruiser, Herself complains that I slump in the saddle like a melting snowman, and she constantly has to wait for me. I don't consciously ride cruising bikes more slowly, but I become more aware of the sights and smells of the countryside we ride through, I take longer to savour the flavour, to stay in the moment.
Sports bikes concentrate the how and why of riding into one intense feeling, where each corner is the destination and the goal is perfection. Each entry, hard on the brakes, is a leap of faith, each apex an adventure, each exit, hard on the throttle, an adrenalin rush.
And the top speed runs seem less important, more a necessary chore than the adrenalin-pumping pinnacle of the ride. We do them, but I find it difficult to get excited about them - unless the bike gets unruly, as some cruisers do when you twist their tails, but that's hardly the sort of excitement you're looking for.
It's not about the destination but the artistry of getting there. There is poetry in motion in the perfect S bend, a rhythm so sensuous in a sequence of fast, open corners that the best ones within riding distance of where I live are called 'Dancing across the Sky'.
And when we get where we're going, I often take a minute to gather my thoughts after I switch off the engine, getting back into my skin before I get off the motorcycle; Herself often remarks that I am more than usually uncommunicative at our traditional breakfast conference after taking a cruiser over our standard test route. So, is it true that riding a cruiser turns your brain to mush? On the available evidence, it would seem so. But when you're cosseted in comfort on a full-dress tourer, with Vivaldi on the stereo, hands and bum toasty warm thanks to heated grips and seat, the ride is always too short, the familiar twists and turns of our standard test route somehow a little unsatisfying. The talk is never about the bike although some of them, such as the BMW K1600 GTL and Honda's Gold Wing, are technically astonishing but always about the far-away places it could take us to if we had the time. In fact, after we'd done our regular test route on the Lead Sled, we took another whole day to cruise a long loop through the southern Cape, to places we hadn't been for years because that bike turned us into Long Rangers. Adventure tourers, on the other hand, bring out the Selous Scout in me. No sooner do I settle into the long-legged, ready-for-anything seating position of a heavy duty beetle-crusher, than I feel the need to take the road less travelled, to go my own way, to visit the wild and lonely places. Even if I didn't bring back photographs it would be enough that I was there, that I saw them; it's actually a very selfish point of view. As is the slightly superior feeling you get when you commute on a big bush-bike, as if the bike you are riding says to all those around it, “I

Ranger wins best bakkie award ESSEX, England - The Ford Ranger has won the “International Pick-Up Award 2013” making it the third international award the US automaker has won in 2012. Judges ranked the new Ranger based on its performance, engine line-up, payload and towing capability. The bakkie was tested at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, England. The Izuzu D-Max and Volkswagen Amarok placed second and third, respectively. Jarlath Sweeney, a judge on the panel, said: "The Ford Ranger is a great all-rounder, combining the perfect blend of on-road comfort
and stability with off-road capability." Paul Randle, vehicle line director of Ford Europe, said: “The Ranger is great for work and great for leisure, and customers will appreciate the difference as soon as they get behind the wheel. “This prestigious award is testament to the work of our global product teams and there is plenty more to look forward to with the launch of the all-new Transit and all-new Transit Connect in 2013.” Ford has also scooped the 2012 “International Engine of the Year” for its 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engine as well as the International Van of the Year 2013 (new Transit Custom). IT has become increasingly popular to enhance vehicles with accessories and gadgets that dramatically enhance the speed, look or driving experience of that vehicle.
This is according to Helen Szemerei, chief executive officer of IntegriSure, who says fitting certain extras, such as alarm systems, tracking systems and antihijacking systems, can reduce the monthly car insurance premium because they lower the insured’s risk profile. “It’s therefore very important to declare these additions to your insurer in order to enjoy the benefits of lowered premiums,” she says. On the other hand, Szemerei warns that, although it is tempting when ordering a new car to include all the latest gadgets, it is important to remember that some items are expensive to replace and could lead to an increased insurance premium.

Furthermore, Szemerei says, because many added extras on a vehicle have a long lifespan, and the motor insurance policy is generally based on the current value of the car, it is advisable to cover valuable extras separately “because, in the event of a claim, these values will not depreciate and will be covered in full”.

With all-mode 4x4 available on all models along with low range, according to Nissan the vehicle is a serious off-roader. Stunning new RAV4 on the way TOYOTA all but invented the modern softroader segment with its original RAV4 back in 1994 and since then competition in the segment has literally exploded to the extent that Toyota's latest offerings have faded into the corner of the stage. Now the fourth-generation RAV4, unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week, is here to rectify things and it comes armed with a bolder design and improved driving characteristics. Style is an important factor in this image-conscious segment and the new Toyota takes a decent stride in this department with its distinctive,
and more muscular, design that takes inspiration from the new Auris hatch. To improve roominess and driving dynamics simultaneously, the 2013 RAV4 is 205mm longer, 30mm wider and 25mm lower than the model before it. It also has a top-hinged tailgate for the first time. Inside, drivers will find an abundance of soft-touch materials in what Toyota calls a more sophisticated environment and it also aims to provide a more engaging driving experience through a lower driving position. As with Toyota's MPV models, interior versatility is enhanced by the 'Easy Flat' seating system that allows the rear seats to be folded flat quickly and easily. There's seating for five and a rather generous luggage volume of 547 litres, 49 litres more than before. While the engine line-up for South Africa has yet to be confirmed, it should more-or-less mirror that of the European range, which offers a choice between one petrol and two diesel units. A virtual certainty is the 110kW 2-litre petrol motor and we'd also bet on getting one of the turbodiesels. The smallest of these is a brand new 2litre motor that pushes 91kW and there's also a 2.2-litre option that's good for 110kW. Although there's not much to get excited about beneath the bonnet, Toyota has put a big emphasis on driver enjoyment through a retuned chassis, Integrated Dynamic Drive system with Sport mode and a revised electric power steering system.

Although not a 'proper' off-roader, stability both on and off the beaten track is ensured by Toyota's permanent all-wheel drive system with Dynamic Torque Control that constantly monitors the flow of torque between the front and rear axles. A further off-road boost is provided by a central diff lock and driving aids like Down-hill Assist and Hill-start Assist.

22 December at Skhila The Mashishing Half Marathon at Skhila outside Lydenburg will consist of the following distances: 5km walkers to start at 07:30 and 10km and 21.1km to start at 07:00. The steering committee of the Mashishing Marathon Club hopes that this half marathon will become an annual event. The race will start and finish at Skhila stadium. The first five children who finishes the 21.2km will receive a free 2013 licence for road runners. The first five children finished with the 10km will also receive this licence from Mr Sipho Mnisi. Mr Sipho Mnisi has 15 licences to give away. The entry fee for the 21.1km is R20, R10 for the 10km and R5 for the 5km (walkers). Bring all the children to enjoy themselves at the marathon. It is important for them to get running experience. The organisers hopes that the Lydenburg community, Mashishing, Skhila and Kellysville will assist them with sponsorship (i.e. water bottles) for the children and that they will be able to hold a Christmas function after the race.
