It was with a big shock a resident in Lydenburg realised that the bath she was so looking forward to was not clean at all. The water was full of dirt and unseen molecules that also created a smell. This was on the Thursday after New Year’s Day. Thaba Chweu Municipality has not raised concern that drinking water is not safe, maybe the residents should stay away from it till it is cleared. ~ Michelle Boshoff

elievlei het ’n baie goeie feesseisoen beleef. Baie skenkings soos meubels, tapyte, gordyne, TV stelle, rekenaars en kombuisgereedskap is geskenk. Vragte groente is afgelaai, een skaap, asook twee varke, ander vleis en blikkieskos is ook afgelewer. ’n Nuwe vrieskas moes aangekoop word en vleis moes by die slagpale se vrieskas gestoor word. Nuwe en tweedehandse klere, asook skoolklere en skoolbenodighede is ook ontvang. Die Direkteur, Frik Rousseau moes sy kantoor ontruim en ’n gedeelte van die eetsaal ontruim omdat daar nie meer stoorplek was vir al die goedere nie. Goedere van nagenoeg R185 000 is in die feesseisoen ontvang. Klere
is aan Duncia Kinderhuis geskenk en kospakkies is gratis aan inwoners buite Lelievlei verskaf. Die bestuur van Lelievlei voel dat omdat Lelievlei so baie ontvang het ons dit met ander instansies en persone moet deel. Drie instansies, naamlik die Christelike Gemeente van Belfast, onder leiding van Rina Snyman, Kanhym naby Middelburg en die VF+ van Thaba Chweu, het saam met die Rooikatte vir Lelievlei afsonderlike kersetes aangebied. Frik Rousseau bedank alle organisasies, kerke, boere, myne, sakemanne, motorfietsklubs, ANC, VF+ en elke persoon wat hierdie Kerstyd hulle harte vir Lelievlei oopgemaak het.

Worst Christmas ever at Lydenburg Hospital Provincial Hospitals are not up to par. The Mpumalanga and Limpopo Governments have expressed their concern about it. Anonymous from Dullstroom writes: At 01:00 in the morning we woke up with all the signs that my wife was going into labour and as our baby had not moved in two days we decided it would be best to go to the hospital immediately. When we arrived at the hospital we waited for 30 minutes for the nurse on duty to wake up to help us. The service was good until the morning I went home at 2:30 to go and have a shower and two hours of sleep as it seemed it was a long day ahead of us . When I arrived at the hospital at around 7:30 I was refused entry to see my wife, although she was in active labour. At 10:00 I found out what was really going on. The toilets were full of blood, and not cleaned for at least two days. My wife told me the nurses and staff told her she was lying about being in pain and that she was just “acting up”.
As if that is possible when you are in labour. We decided to check her out of hospital and take her to a more child and mother friendly hospital that would help people . Then another shock. I found a huge dent in the car door that one of the security guards kicked in (due to an argument on the hospital grounds when he refused me entry). I spoke to another person that was there, the same had happened to his wife. Now I want to ask how many times is this going to happen before anything is done? The service is really poor and it is sad that people accept it as it is. This was the worst day ever in my life and I hope that the right people will read this and do something as my lawyers will do. ' Koot. Hierdie 2013 wat voorlê maak my sommer bang. Gelukkig is die onbekende nie vir my onmoontlik nie. Ek ploeg voort. Ek is bly 2012 is agter die rug. Hierdie jaar wil ek net meer fokus op dinge wat my gelukkig maak, en dinge soek wat my gelukkig maak. Geen voorneme was my enigste voorneme op 31 Desember 2012. Maar op 5 Januarie het die deuntjie toe verander. Voorneme nommer een is om minder af-koppie vergeet-verkleurmannetjie te speel. En dan doen ek dit nog so vrywillig dat my kop somtyds heeltemal raas. Dit was verlede jaar ook een van my wense, en dit het nooit waar geword nie. Inteendeel dit het vererger. Te veel het ek al op 00:00 vinnig ’n wensie opgestuur, so op die ingewing. Daarom besluit ek eers ’n paar sober dae later wat moet verander in die nuwe jaar. Dis veiliger. Selfs al is dit later in Januarie. Ek glo as ’n positiewe idee in jou kop kom om sommer dit die volgende dag toe te pas. Loop met ’n reguit rug en ’n glimlag vir die res van die jaar. Maak ook ’n lys van al jou goeie kwaliteite en waarvoor jy dankbaar is. Partykeer moet mens net herinner word aan hoe gelukkig jy eintlik is. Bel ’n vergete vriend, los ou verwyte en deel ’n snaakse storie met iemand. Lag is goeie medisyne En moet ’n nooit ’n belofte maak wat jy nie kan nakom nie. Beloftes maak skuld. So maak elke dag ’n belofte om na te kom. Dan het mens nie voornemes nodig nie. Voorspoed vir elke dag in 2013.
The festive season has come and gone, and we all need to face new challenges in the New Year, but this does not mean that we can let our guard down when it comes to the safety of our loved ones. We as individuals need to take responsibility in the fight against crime by taking the necessary safety precautions. Housebreakings are still a priority concern in and around Lydenburg. Plasma TV’s, laptops, cell phones, cameras and cash are still the most targeted items as it can be easily sold. Safety at home: Never allow any strangers onto your property. Unsuspecting domestic workers, garden staff and children are often approached by robbers, pretending to be repairmen or inspectors. Keep all doors / safety gates locked at all times. Close all windows when leaving your house, most of the recent housebreakings around Lydenburg involved windows and doors that were forced open. Do not leave valuable items in close range of any windows. Laptops, cell phones, cameras, etc can easily be taken through open windows. Lock your gates at night and switch on all
external lights. Do not go out at night when you hear strange noises or suspect that there is somebody on your property, rather call your security company or the police to investigate. Invest in the safety of your family. It is advisable to install an alarm system with panic buttons that can be monitored by a reliable security company. KNOW your employees. Make sure they are not illegal immigrants and keep copies of their identification documents. You need to know the residential address of all employees and their contact details. Do not hire people from the street. Vehicles should as far as possible be parked in locked garages. NEVER leave your vehicle in the street or open driveway at night. Keys should not be left hanging on the wall as this is the first place criminals will look for your vehicle keys. Soos my goeie vriend Jan Muller sê: Hy en Adrie werk vakansies aan hulle huwelik. Elke keer as sy hom sien sê sy: Hie(r) wil ek.... (sus en so gedoen hê). Soos gewoonlik is ons almal terug by die werk en is dit “Business as usual” Ons is dankbaar daarvoor. Ons is dankbaar dat die Almagtige Here ons gespaar het en veilig terug by die werk het. In die tweede week ontvang ek ’n oproep van Imperial Toyota. Die verkoopsdame lig my in dat ’n persoon ’n Quantum Bussie kontant gekoop het, en dat die skenker al die “sign writing” sowel as ’n sleepstang sal betaal. Die bussie word aan die AGS Rehobot gemeente geskenk. ’n Week later deel die handelaar my mee dat ons eers in Februarie 2013 dalk die bus sal kan kry vanweë beperkte voorraad. “Jes 55: 8 LB Want die Here sê “ Ek dink nie soos julle dink nie en Ek doen dinge heeltemal anders as julle!” ’n Uur later bel die handelaar en sê daar was ’n kansellasie, ons bussie word afgelewer. Baie dankie aan Imperial Toyota Nelspruit vir hulle puik diens, spesifiek aan Alicia du Toit vir elke bietjie moeite en al die detail, van die begin tot met die aflewering. Amelia Bietjie en haar span vir die wondere verrig aan die buitekant van die bus. Aan God al die eer wat Sy woord bevestig deur wonders en tekens en kragtige dade. Nuus / News Die personeel van die MTPA het 2012 afgesluit met hulle jaarlikse braai wat by die Boshuis gehou was. Dit was 'n baie lekker braai en almal het vrolik saam gekuier en die pap, sous, vleis en drinkgoed geniet. Dankie aan Dina en die manne wat gebraai het. Tommie Steyn, Hoof beampte van die Visserye, het almal bedank vir hulle harde werk deur die jaar en dat hulle moet gaan goed uitrus en met nuwe energie terug keer in 2013.
Twee ruiters van Lydenburg skop stof op

ie Junior Suid-Afrikaanse en Interprovinsiale Tentpegging (Gymkhana) kampioenskappe is gedurende Desember op Bethlehem gehou. Junior ruiters van oor die hele land het vanaf 10 Desember aan die kampioenskappe deelgeneem. Twee ruiters van Lydenburg, naamlik Naudè Potgieter en Pieter Els het vir die Gauteng-Noordspan in die B-
divisie deelgeneem. 'n Span bestaan uit vier ruiters. Die Lydenburgers het voortreflik gery en hul span het stof in die ander provinsies se oë geskop en eerste geëindig. Tydens die SA Kampioenskappe het Pieter Els mooi presteer en is in die Nasionale Ontwikkelingsspan ingesluit. Die Ontwikkelingsspan bestaan uit vyf ruiters wat vir die eerste keer aan die SA's deelneem

THE Dakar rally got under way in South America this weekend, amid concern about the potential damage that the 8 400km trek through Peru and Chile could cause to the local environment. Organisers (ASO) have already had to reject claims that the 459 cars, bikes, trucks and quad bikes taking part in this year's edition will cause irreparable harm to ancient archaeological sites. ASO, which also organises cycling's most prestigious and gruelling race, the Tour de France, is becoming used to dealing with such questions, as sport in general is increasingly scrutinised about its “green” credentials. The Dakar rally first revealed its carbon footprint in 2007, trumpeting the fact that the 43 000 tonnes of greenhouse gases it produced was nearly a quarter of that at the French Open tennis tournament (156 000 tonnes). Motorsport and in particular Formula One - long demonised because of its reliance on the fossil fuels thought to contribute to global warming - has led the way in publicising environmental attributes. “We've got this image of waste but we don't pollute any more than other events,” said FIA technical director Bernard Niclot. “Motorsport has always contributed to the development of road cars. Even
today, we still want it to help make cleaner, more fuel efficient cars and to respond to the challenges of diminishing oil supplies and protecting the environment.” FIA president Jean Todt, who formerly led the Ferrari F1 team, has been at the forefront of attempts to use renewable energy sources and staging quieter, more fuel efficient races. Next year will see the launch of Formula E, with single-seater electric cars racing at speeds of up to 180km/h on city circuits such as Rome. Fuel limits will also be introduced in 2014 in endurance racing, following on from existing restrictions on wind tunnel tests, plus the number of engines and gearboxes available for drivers. The Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) aims to reduce its overall carbon footprint by 15 percent in the coming years. The use of artificial snow, tree felling and soil erosion in ski resorts or heavy water consumption on golf courses have long been targets for environmental campaigners. But even apparently “green” sports cannot afford to rest on their laurels. In 2009, there was outrage after images were shown of some 20 tonnes of rubbish left on Mont Ventoux after the advertising caravan on the Tour de France came through, distributing free gifts to the tens of thousands of fans parked by the road. Some 50 tonnes of rubbish was produced during the 2011 New York Marathon while about 20 000 of the 47 000 participants came from abroad, most of them by high polluting air travel. According to campaigners, serious thought has to be given to big sporting events, no matter how much organisers claim to be meeting environmental targets on use of sustainable materials or recycling. “Tens of thousands of spectators pollute more at an autosports competition than the racing cars,” said Edouard Donnelly, a sustainable development expert at Paris-based sports consultancy firm Keneo. “There's no difference between the Tour de France and a motorsport race.” In France, an estimated 50 percent of 260 000 sports venues are said to be poorly insulated, over-using water and electricity or not readily accessible by public transport. Yachtswoman Isabelle Autissier, who is also head of the French branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), said environmental damage was the paradox of the modern day sports industry. “We're building more and more big structures. We're getting people to come from farther afield,” she said. “By attracting more people we obviously generate more waste and damage because transporting sportsmen and women and spectators has more of an impact.” French Green Party lawmaker Jean-Luc Bennahmias said any steps taken were currently no more than a smokescreen, highlighting world football governing body FIFA's decision to award Qatar the 2022 World Cup. The Gulf state is building 12 new air-conditioned stadia. Foreign fans will all travel by plane while the venues will become white elephants after the competition, he said. - AFP / Motoring.co.za

Often on the move for more than 12 hours a day, Ben Samuelson, whose firm Samuelson Wylie Associates planned and executed the trip, coped imperiously with the challenge of towing a 2 399 kg trailer across 5 915 km in just 11 days. The journey started at Airstream's factory in Tebay, a few kilometres south of the Scottish border, to Oukaïmeden, the highest ski resort in Africa. The route included a trip to Land Rover’s factory in Solihull, England and Frank Gehry’s aluminium Marques de Riscal building in Rioja, Spain.

Van Niekerk, competing in his first Dakar, finished 15th in the 13km opening special stage at Pisco after a 250-kilometre liaison section from the start in the Peruvian capital of Lima. He was 33 seconds behind the winner, Francisco Lopez of Chile on a KTM. Curtis, who finished 22nd in the 2012 Dakar Rally at his first attempt, was 25th on Saturday's special stage, 47 seconds behind Lopez. “The first stage was cool, very motocross-like in the dunes around Pisco.” Curtis said: “It was very hot - about 40 degrees - and the number of spectators who turned out to watch was overwhelming. There were thousands of them at the start in Lima and they lined the road all the way down the coast to Pisco. “I was a bit distracted by the crowds on the liaison stage and hit a curb, landing upside down. Hopefully that won't happen again.” Van Niekerk commented: “It was my first day on the Dakar and I'm pleased with how it went. The crowds were overwhelming - wanting to touch you and take photographs.” The two South Africans, riding works KTM 450's, are among 183 motorcycles competing in the 34th Dakar Rally. The full field of 449 also includes 153 cars, 75 trucks and 38 quads. The rally will end in Santiago, Chile on 20 January 20, 8400 kilometres from Lima, and includes 14 special stages covering 4 100 kilometres in Peru, Argentina and Chile. The Mashishing Marathon Club held a successful marathon on 22 December. It was held at Skhila Primary School and was attended by local runners, as well as runners from Steelpoort, Assmang and the Polokwane Marathon Club. After the race there was a unanimous decision to make this an annual event. The Mashishing Steering Committe would like to thank all the companies and shops in Lydenburg who made donations towards the event: Roza at Cash and Carry, Mr Van Der Nest, Khadimas Safety, Movssov Mbow, Kraaines, V. U. C. Narulanens, B. Store, Mzane, Teme, Hanas Hardware, Otees Cash and Carry . Thank you for the shops who gave the children gifts for Christmas: Ds D. M. Malele, Kia Motors, Yebo Factory, Pick a Pay, and Tekkie Town, Traffic Department at Thaba Chweu for safety. Thank you to Sipho Mnisi the Chairman of the Club for all his hard word.
