Vrou se dood skok gemeenskap ’n Vrou het haar eie lewe geneem. Die familie het genoem hulle wil die “goeie” onthou. Sy was bekend en het almal gehelp wat op haar lewenspad gekom het. Die tragedie het Saterdag 12 Januarie in Lydenburg afgespeel. Die gemeenskap is diep geskok oor die gebeure. Lede van die SAPD en ’n plaaslike begrafnisondernemer het die toneel opgeruim en bystand verleen. Besonderhede van haar dood word weerhou weens respek aan haar naasbestaandes. Christa Hoffman se begrafnis vind Saterdag 19 Januarie plaas vanuit die Gereformeerde Kerk, Lydenburg, in De Beerstraat om 11:00.

suspect was arrested in Lydenburg while he was hiding out from the SAPS after the gruesome murder of an elderly couple in Belfast last week. A post mortem found that Mr Van Heerden was supposedly choked with his wife's bra and that Mrs Van Heerden was choked with the belt of her dressing gown. The killers put their bodies in the deep freeze after that. Two suspects alleged to be involved in the brutal killing of an elderly couple in Belfast were arrested between 12 and 14 January respectively. The first suspect (21) was arrested by the police at Mamelodi in Pretoria on Saturday. The suspect was cornered by the police and had no chance to escape. Another suspect, who was also in the house, managed to escape while firing shots at the police. A shootout ensued but no one was injured. was also recovered. A joint effort by the police in Mamelodi and Mpumalanga proves to be working, hence these arrests. The SAPS followed information that led to the arrest of a second suspect aged 24 on 14 January at his hideout in Lydenburg. The bodies of the couple were found on 9 January by police. They were stashed inside a deep freezer at their house with their hands and feet tied with cables. Upon further investigation, police discovered the couple's vehicle, a Toyota Prado, that was left abandoned on the N4 road towards Middelburg. It also appeared that two firearms belonging to the victims were stolen. The investigation, with regard to the case, is continuing and more charges will be added against the suspects. T h e P r o v i n c i a l C o m m i s s i o n e r, Lieutenant General Thulani Ntobela commended the investigating officers and on the same note passed condolences to the Van Heerden's family. • Nearly a year ago Mrs Joey Moore (78) was murdered in Dullstroom. The suspects are awaiting trial.

n immature Cape Vulture recovered near the Orighstad dam was presented at Sterkspruit Veterinary Clinic in December. Besides general weakness and emaciation, the bird had paresis in the legs, respiratory wheezes and diarrhoea. Multiple metallic particles in the gastrointestinal tract visible on the radiograph confirmed a diagnosis of lead poisoning. Despite appropriate treatment, the patient succumbed several days later. On autopsy several fragments of automotive battery plate lead mesh were recovered from the stomach. The stomach was also impacted with plant material. Old battery plates are the

commonest cause of lead poisoning in cattle, when malnourished cattle ingest the plates for the salty taste imparted by the residual lead sulphate. It is improbable that a vulture would directly ingest old battery mesh. In this case it is postulated that this vulture fed on the carcass of a cow that had ingested battery plates. Since it was a young vulture and therefore occupying a low position in the social hierarchy, and since most vultures in the country exist in a state of constant hunger due to an inadequate supply of carrion, it probably had formidable competition at the carcass. This would explain why it had to be satisfied

with a meal of bovine fore-stomach and hence the concurrent ingestion of plant material and lead fragments. If this postulate is correct, it also suggests that more than one vulture has been exposed to potential lead intoxication. Clearly the consequences of improper disposal of old batteries extend beyond the unnecessary loss of a cow. Most automotive battery agents will give a discount on new battery purchases when an old one is exchanged. Hi-Q in Lydenburg will also take in your scrap auto batteries for sale disposal at no charge. Wingshooters should be aware that shotgun pellets in lost birds could have the same result l,

further up the food chain. Every effort should be made to recover lost birds or better still, use should be made of gundogs. Properly sited vulture restaurants are the best and safest ways of providing food for vultures. Collect lost pets at LAPSAR Longtom Animal Protection and Rescue Services (LAPSAR) is urging all Lydenburg and surrounding area residents to visit LAPSAR if they have lost a pet. Cllr Sonja Boshoff from the Democratic Alliance has urged Thaba Chewu Municipality to rectify the water problems in the Sterkspruit Estate and other areas in Lydenburg. The Highlands Panorama News has received several complaints from Sterkspruit residents. The water situation has reached a level of desperation. She stated that the Sterkspruit Estates and other areas of town such as the Heads, Boulders and certain lower lying areas in Voortrekker Street are continuously without water for days on end. Some of these areas have been without water since Monday evening (7 January 2013). Calls to the call centre go unanswered and answers from the TCM officials are contradicting. “As a resident and a DA councillor living in Sterkspruit Estates, I can attest to this as I receive hundreds of calls on a daily basis. The matter is reaching boiling point and I cannot be held responsible for any action that the residents may take or implement. Since your appointment date, you have been aware of this problem and still it persists. To eradicate this from happening, I am urging you to look into this problem as a matter of urgency. No citizen should be subjected to this form of service delivery especially in the light that these residents are paid up with their consumer accounts and furthermore many of these residents are employees of the mining fraternity. These mines are the ones who ensure that their social responsibilities are executed which in turn keeps this municipality afloat,” Cllr Boshoff stated.

IS my twaalfde jaar as professionele joernalis, drie daarvan as redakteur. Op universiteit doen jy dit vir die liefde van die saak en tydens my studies het ek by meer as 17 publikasies vryskut-werk gedoen. Dit is al die Kunstefeeste uitgesluit waar jy definitief jou ‘betaling’ in gunste en gawes ontvang. ’n Koerant moet homself soms herposisioneer om aan die eise van die gemeenskap wat hy dien te voldoen. In al die nuuskantore waar ek al gewerk het, word die redaksie soms gedwing om teen die grein van opleiding en etiek ’n leser of kliënt sy sin te gee. Ja, selfs die tannies wat nie wil herken dat hulle dié spelfout gemaak het nie. Om die vrede te bewaar plaas mens maar weer die brief. Dit gebeur weekliks in bykans elke nuuskantoor wêreldwyd om die vrede te bewaar. Agter die toe deure van ’n koerant kry mens die sagmoedige reuse, wat altyd ’n sagteplek sal hê vir gemeenskaps-eie-nuus. Veral vir dié wat nog iewers probeer uitkom en nie nou geld het nie. Vir hulle word daar gereeld ’n gratis plekkie afgestaan en boonop word hulle funksie bygewoon, gratis. Vir die liefde van ’n saak word blaaie se publisiteit aan ’n organisasie afgestaan, partykeer vir jare. Ai, ook maar goed joernalistiek bring ’n tikkie sinisme. Die is nie plattelandse mentaliteit nie. Ek sal nooit so veralgemeen nie, want ek is Lydenburger in murg en been. ’n Koerant word vinnig in die rug gesteek. Hou in gedagte dat nie alle koerante sensasie-belaaide vol nie-waarhede publiseer nie. Sekere lede van die publiek kan vinnig hul rug draai op ’n instansie wat ’n gratis diens verskaf en die produk ook gratis uitdeel. Leef en laat leef. Dis veronderstel om ’n vennootskap van wedersydse versorging te wees. Maar gewoonlik is die koerant die eerste party wat in die voet geskiet word. Ja, daar is persvryheid, vryheid van uitdrukking, soorte vryheid tot daar nie meer vryhede is nie. En koerantland sal altyd vir my daardie vryheid gee.

Bekommerde diereliefhebber van Lydenburg skryf: Na aanleiding van die berig op bladsy 4 “Katte net afgelaai”. Dit wat die persoon gedoen het is miskien nie reg nie. Maar die vraag ontstaan: Watter aandeel het die veeartse in hierdie storie? As hulle dit meer bekostigbaar vir mens maak om jou diere reg te maak en mense aanmoedig om dit te doen sal sulke goed nie gebeur nie. Dan praat ek nie eers van die “politiek” tussen die privaat veeartse en staatsveearts nie. Waar is jou liefde vir diere as dit net oor geld gaan? Ek het naastenby R1 900 opgedok om my wyfie kat en tefie te laat regmaak. Dis baie geld en nie almal het daardie geld om 'n ou weggooi katjie (of hondjie) wat hul uit die goedheid van hul hart ingeneem het reg te maak nie. So wat gebeur? Die kat teël aan en die kleintjies word “weggegooi” en dan word 'n berig soos dié in die koerant geplaas oor hoe sleg die arme eienaar is.

especially thank the Municipality when they maintain electricity supply or fix a pothole, and that is the decent and right thing to do. We never thanked Apartheid’s Municipalities for these “favours”. There were no potholes! When we thanked them, it was for new streets or even better streetlights to upgrade the old but still working ones! It was for some sort of new development. We called it progress! And we were really spoilt, as these guys usually did improve and expand on services all the time. Now before you accuse me of being racist or longing for the days of Apartheid, I know full well that black people were mostly excluded from this “progress”. But the question is simple: How the hell are they benefitting now? After 20 years, for most of them, very little has

changed. They have a black Government. They have substandard RDP houses not fit for habitation. Their health and education systems are far worse than in the old days! In fact, their government has allowed a working and good infrastructure system to fall into decay and neglect. They have transformed staff to the extent that nobody now knows exactly where the water lines, sewers and cables are running underground. Nobody knows how to build and maintain a tarred street. Damn it, they don’t even know how to manage people and maintain discipline! So, like the rest of colonial Africa, we end up with slums where everything rots and stinks. Viva the new, sorry, I mean the old South Africa!

Illegal hawkers: open space next to regional library at Voortrekker street

The late Mrs Beulah Middleton Beulah Middleton (nee Joubert) was born in Mazabuka, Northern Rhodesia on the 29/06/1925. After her father passed away at the young age of 38 years she and her mother moved back to Edenburg in the Orange Free State where her parents had previously been sheep farmers. This is where she met her husband to be. Thomas Ravenscroft Middleton was a practising attorney in Edenburg. He used to visit Beulah on the family farm where he proposed to her and soon after they got married. They had three children Dawn Trevor and Tom. Later they moved to Pretoria and eventually ended up in Pilgrims Rest where her beloved husband Thomas passed away in 1998. She stayed with her son Tom and his wife Wesna until August 2012 when she was taken up in Lydenburg Rusoord after she had a stroke. The last couple of months until she passed away on 07/01/2013 were marred by poor health and suffering. She was a wonderful wife and mother and her children will miss her very much. We know that she is with her beloved saviour and husband in heaven and is free of the suffering of this world.

Cllr Sonja Boshoff writes: I have for quite a considerable time taken note of various hawkers trading goods from the open space opposite the Regional Library in Voortrekker Street. What is of concern is that some of these hawkers not only sell their goods from this area, but are residing here as well. After close of “business” a canvass sheet is pulled over the goods and they move in under this sheet. As this is one of our tourist entrance and exit routes we need to seriously conduct an inspection and implement our recently approved by-laws.

If we do not attend to this problem, a negative message could be sent out to our tourists as well as to prospective investors. I am fully aware of people trying any form of business for survival purposes, but we cannot allow persons to run rampant without following the correct procedures when conducting business. The question that needs to be asked is “What ablution facilities are these hawkers using”? If this matter is not attended to in a proper manner, the residents and formal businesses in this area may be subjected to health hazards.

A resident from Lydenburg: About two years ago, Thaba Chweu dug a huge whole next to Westvaal Mashishing. I'm not sure why. Now the hole is filled with sewerage and poses a health risk and they have just left it alone. I stay just down the road and the smell is unbearable. It is also its a breeding ground for serious diseases. Since this hole filled up with sewerage our area is plagued with flies, fleas and mosquitos. There is also a lot more sickness in the area . Can’t Thaba Chweu do something about this 'shit hole' (sic) they have put so close to our homes.

THE South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) has developed a programme aimed at capacitating municipal finance officials to enable them to meet minimum competencies. It is envisaged that this project will help municipalities achieve clean audits. The project also upskills unemployed graduates. These programmes have previously been aimed at two levels, namely the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) level and the Financial Clerk level. However, the SAICA Municipalities Programme aims to address the level between these, namely that of the Financial Manager level as well as other associated Financial Management positions, such as Supply Chain Manager. The SAICA Municipalities Programme is funded by the National Skills Fund of the Department of Higher Education and Training to the tune of R72 million. National Treasury, the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and Deloitte Learning Alliance. The programme offers on-the-job training to improve the skills and legal compliance of municipal finance officials and, in so doing, enhance service delivery. Learners are placed on a work readiness program covering soft skills through a structured, nonaccredited program. This is followed by the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) accredited Skills Programme covering 15 unit standards delivered over a period of 15 months. Mentoring and coaching is a critical part of this capacity-building project. One of the desired outcomes is that unemployed graduates and interns will find permanent jobs within municipalities or any other relevant sector. MORE than a year ago, on 15 December 2011, Independent Newspapers South Africa, holding group for Star Newspaper, IOL and The Cape Times among others, announced the Kia Rio hatch as the overall winner in the “Best small/budget car” category in their Motoring Car of the Year competition. The publishing group described the Rio hatch as a car “that blends trendy styling with impressive ride quality and neat handling” and as a B-segment car with a “larger than average” interior. As one of Kia Motors South Africa’s most successful models, the Kia Rio has been in high demand since its initial launch in November 2011. New Corvette C7 ALTHOUGH the Chevy Corvette hasn’t really been at the forefront of the sportscar market for many years, it is nevertheless seen as the marque’s “spiritual core”. For that reason alone, any new model is as much a celebration as it is of vital importance. Chevrolet has now released the seventh incarnation of the iconic “Vette” at the Detroit Motor Show. Reviving the Stingray moniker for the dramatically styled new car, the 2013 Chevy Corvette is said to represent the biggest generational change for this model in several decades. Its new LT1 small-block V8 engine is of the same size (6,2-litre) than what was used in the C6 and produces 335 kW and 610 N.m of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via either a new seven-speed manual transmission (with Active Rev Matching) or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifts. Chevrolet claims a 0-100 km/h run in below 4,0 seconds and, when equipped with the Z51 Performance Package, the Stingray should be able to achieve 1g of cornering grip – impressive stuff, given that this is the “base” model of the new C7 line of Corvettes. Standard on the new Stingray is a five-position Drive Mode Selector that tailors 12 vehicle attributes to suit the driver’s immediate demands and driving conditions. The new car’s construction includes the use of lightweight materials such as a carbon fibre bonnet and removable roof panel, composite fenders, doors and rear quarter panels, carbon-nano composite underbody panels and a new aluminium frame that is 57 per cent stiffer than what was used

before and also 45 kg lighter. A somewhat controversial technical development is the inclusion of an electric power steering system on all models. The Z51 package adds a number of other technologies, including third-generation Magnetic Ride Control and an electronic limited slip differential. Previous Corvettes were regularly criticised for their plasticky interiors, and this has been an area of focus of Chevrolet. The new car features a cabin with premium materials, including real carbon fibre, aluminium and leather. Infotainment is taken care of by dual 8-inch configurable screens. Carmag.co.za

For now, this was a welcome respite from the hardships of the 8 500-kilometre marathon and a time to rest weary bodies and battered machines and prepare for the second week. “It was quite a challenging stage!” said De Villiers. “It went well for us. We started fifth and overtook Nasser when he suffered a puncture. Then we reached a river which was totally flooded. It was impossible to cross. We heard from the organisers that the rest of the stage was neutralised and that the result would be taken as at Check Point 2. A pity, as we were having a good run and would probably have been able to make up a bit more time by the end.” The Toyota Imperial South Africa Team set out from Lima a week ago with two Imperial Toyota Hilux 4x4s, the second South African-built bakkie in the hands of 2012 national off road champions Duncan Vos and Rob Howie. Competing in their second Dakar – they were 10th overall in their debut in 2011 in an Imperial Toyota Hilux – they were forced to withdraw from the race. Lying 12th overall after the first two stages, they rolled their Hilux after cresting a high sand dune too quickly and damaged the roll cage. They completed the stage, but were unable to continue for safety reasons. “It's been a tough and hectic week,” said team manager Glyn Hall. “Giniel and Dirk have had a very good run so far and we're in a good position to challenge for a podium position in Santiago on January 20. Duncan and Rob were unlucky to go out the way they did. They could have continued if the roll cage hadn't been damaged, but the rules do not allow this. Calling Sunday a rest day is a bit of a misnomer as it's anything but for the technical team. We stripped down Hilux #301 and checked everything and replaced components where necessary. TORRENTIAL rain and flooded rivers turned the final stage of the first week of the Dakar Rally into something of a lottery, but this did not stop the South African/German duo of Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz from successfully defending the third place overall they established in their Imperial Toyota Hilux on the fourth day of the race. Special stage eight between Salta and San Miguel de Tucuman in Argentina was originally intended to be 470 kilometres long, but overnight rain resulted in it being shortened to 185 kilometres before the start at 2.05 pm local time (7.05 pm SA time. When a swollen river 30 kilometres from the end of the stage prevented all but the first five cars from reaching the finish, the race direction applied the slowest stage time of the finishers to all those who failed to finish. It appears this decision is being contested by some competitors and teams and the current results are subject to confirmation. The stage was won by Guerlain Chicherit and Jean-Pierre Garcin of France in a twowheel drive SMG Buggy. De Villiers and Von Zitzewitz were among those who were unable to cross the river. Current official overall results place Frenchmen Stephane Peterhansel and Jean Paul Cottret, who have led from stage two in a four-wheel drive diesel Mini, in the lead after 18 hr 31 min 4 sec of racing since the Dakar started in Lima, Peru, on January 5. The Qatari/Spanish combination of Nasser Al-Attiyah and Lucas Cruz are second in a two-wheel drive petrol Buggy, 3 min 14 sec behind. De Villiers and Von Zitzewitz are 44 min 3 sec in arrears and 4 min 51 sec ahead of fourth-placed Russians Leonid Novitskiy and Konstantin Zhiltsov in another Mini. Whatever way the officials decide De Villiers and Von Zitzewitz will remain third overall in their proudly South African four-wheel drive petrol Hilux, with the gap to the first and second cars and to the fourth car depending on the final decision. OP Donderdag, 6 Desember, het Steelpoort Akademie se Top 10 akademiese leerders uitgereik en hul talente gebruik om terug te ploeg in die gemeenskap. Die leerders het â&#x20AC;&#x2122;n kleuterskool in Ga Phasha besoek waar 50 kindertjies in een vertrek versorg word en waar jy plek plek deur die muur kon sien. Die muur is gepleister, swartborde aan die binnekant opgesit vir die onderwysers en kinders om op te skryf en die Top 10 leerders het die skooltjie verfraai deur die mure te versier en te verf.

Die kreatiwiteit het oorgeloop en die leerders het die voorreg gehad om die bevrediging van gee te beleef. Na hulle kreatiewe sessie het hulle lekkergoed pakkies uitgedeel aan die kindertjies. Baie dankie aan Tubatse, in die besonder mnr Andries Nieuwoudt, wat ons gehelp het en ons vergesel het na die skooltjie, asook Prominent Paint wat verf geskenk het om die proses moontlik te maak. Om te gee is werklik lekkerder as om te ontvang!!

The first leg of the MTN Nissan National Mountain Bike series is set to kick off in Barberton, Mpumalanga. This race once again promises to bring the best, and worst out of each cyclist, young and old, fit and unfit. This race also forms the foundation for the Barberton Rotary Club to raise much needed funds for a number of different charities. The Barberton Rotary Club has been part of this event for the past 14 years.There will be four different races in which you can compete: The ultra marathon (120 Km) is a combination of the marathon and half marathon route. The marathon (75km) for the professional, tough and hardy. The half marathon (45km) for the average mountain bike rider. The fun rides (10km & 20km) for the family group.
