“Die arme goed het tussen die vragmotor se wiele vasgesit. Dit was die naarste ding ooit,” het ’n ooggetuie gesê. Dit was die toneel wat hom vroeg Vrydagoggend op die Badfonteinpad, buite Lydenburg, afgespeel het. Een van die groot ‘mynvragmotors” het waarskuwings van werkers geïgnoreer en ’n hele paar beeste doodgery. Daar was na die voorval rooi vlae duidelik langs die pad, wat nie hul doel gedien het om die diere te beskerm nie. Dit was behoorlik ’n slagting. Die vragmotor het bo-oor die diere gery. Party het tussen die voertuig se wiele vasgesit en ander is agter die voertuig uitgeslinger. Die vragmotor het nie omgeslaan nie en niemand is ernstig beseer nie. Die toneel het gelyk na ’n slagpale wat van beeste se vel en organe ontslae raak en nie diere wat nog die oggend geleef het nie. Die geraamde skade (beeste) is bykans R100 000.

The team that made the new hall of the St. John’s Anglican Church in Lydenburg a possibility. EGULAR services at the Parish of Mashishing St. John’s Anglican Church were started on Sunday 30 August 1874. The church celebrated the opening of their new hall on Sunday 17 February. After years of planning, it has finally come to fruition. The hall has a unique architectural design and looks similar to the church. The parishioners wanted to make sure that the two buildings form a unity. Rev Kgosi Hendricks gave everyone a warm welcome and especially thanked all the

sponsors and the parishioners for their continued support of this project. The sponsors included Sanmos Drawings, Ly d e n b u r g C o n s t r u c t i o n , S u m o w Construction, Imbali Nursery, George Floyd and the parishioners for cash donations, cupboards, tables, stove, a fridge, labour and the plans. Mr Doug Starling gave a short history of the church. It is very interesting to know that St. John’s is one of the oldest churches that continued to hold services on a regular basis. Rev John Thorne presided from 1874-1952, followed by Rev Henry Adams. Bishop Bousfield was the first Bishop of Pretoria that presided from 1878-1902. St. John’s has a rich history and a traveller to Lydenburg from Durban in 1973 described the Transvaal as having pretty landscapes, long ranges of mountains and kloofs. The Dutch lived chiefly on the game that they killed. Lydenburg had a large market square, surrounded by several stores, a billiard room and canteen, the Government Offices, the Dutch Minister’s house and a few private Dutch houses. On the whole, it is the prettiest and most substantially built village that I have passed. She stayed on a nearby farm and said that they were in hourly danger of lions and leopard.

The students visited the underground section at the North Shaft, where Mr Leon Swart, Section Manager, openly welcomed them. Their next stop was the diamond rich region of the Kingdom of Lesotho where they learned about diamondiferous alluvial sands as well as diamondiferous kimberlitic pipes. Their last stop was at Grahamstown, where they explored the Cape fold Belt on how it fits into the jigsaw of South African geology . They left South Africa for snowy Switzerland on 4 February .

15 Students from the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, Switzerland, visited Dwarsrivier Mine. The one day visit to Dwarsrivier Mine was part of their month long visit to South Africa, to explore the many geological wonders of our country. South Africa is a kaleidoscope of geological heritage, including but not limited to, the platinum and chrome rich belts, the Cradle of Humankind, and the recently inducted 7th wonder of the world, Table Mountain. Dwarsrivier Mine was best suited for the students exposure to chromite mining, the formation of the chromitite rocks as well as

Monique Johanna van der Linden (22) allegedly went missing on 11 February. She was last seen at her home in Saringa Street, The Heads, Lydenburg at 03:00 on Monday morning. Description: Slender build, long, blonde hair, sharp nose, 1.4 m in height, 60kg in weight, wearing braces on teeth and blue eyes. According to her family, she left without informing them and without taking anything with her. Monique is believed to be very ill and left without her chronic medication. Police opened a Missing Persons file and are also looking for her friend, known as Johan Brunette (35) from Witbank, who might be able to assist the police in their investigation. Time for talk is over Anonymous from Lydenburg writes: Our perceived battle against the scourge of rape, abuse and murder of our women and children is meaningless while we carry on ignoring the tsunami, while we whistle and look the other way and pray for divine intervention. It is time to do something, to start looking at how we groom our men, how we as men inadvertently empower other men to rape, abuse and murder by looking the other way, by not wanting to get involved, by not talking about this in our churches.... We get together in our little groups of friends, with colleagues at the workplace, our cultural male gatherings, our family gatherings, our religious gatherings, yet never a word is mentioned about this festering abscess which has become acceptable in the self-righteous, self-protecting male domain. Those of us who intimidate, rape, abuse and murder; those of us who believe that women and children are there for us to use as we see fit; those.... are part of our communities, those work with us, go to school with us, they act singly or in groups, they live among us in our area. They attend church with us, go to school functions with us, play sport with us, drink in our taverns and pubs with us, eat in our restaurants with us. They are among us. They are our neighbours, our brothers, our fathers, our sons. Yes, it is us men who rape, abuse and murder, and it is us men who protect those that rape, abuse and murder. It is us men who intimidate, bully, and coerce women and children to not report the rapists, the abusers or the murderers. It is not the job of the police or the courts to prevent these heinous acts. It is the job of us men. Each one of us. You and I. And I, for one, be assured, am definitely going to take action. I will no longer keep quiet and be a part to the rape, the abuse and the murder. I will believe the women and the children. I will endeavor to at least start protecting them by not keeping quiet. I have looked at the research which says that the majority of rapists and abusers are known to the victims, are most likely part of their households. It is time that you, Mr Rapist, Mr Abuser, Mr Murderer - start looking over your shoulder while you contemplate your dastardly deeds. Because I shall become vigilant, I shall be the one to report you, and I shall make sure I point out sufficient evidence to secure you a long and uncomfortable stay in our extensive correctional services network. AN old friend and ex colleague of mine at the Mpumalanga Parks and Tourism Agency, has just published two books with poems and inspirational messages. Ezrom Maromo wa Sekgobela is well known in Mashishing, as he was born here. He has studied and worked as a journalist (amongst others with my late partner Mr. Quintus Loots, co-founder of the Highlands Panorama News), before he joined the MTPA, where he actively promotes tourism in our beautiful province. Reading through “Crevices Of My Soul” and “Rise”, one comes to understand the man. Deeply religious, highly intelligent, well read and a decent human being, it is clear that Mr. wa Sekgobela clearly understands the psyche of present day South Africa and its inhabitants. Drawing extensively from nature, the Bible and his own experience, here is a man who clearly loves his country and longs for a more just and tolerant society. These books should be compulsory reading for all South Africans, irrespective of race or creed. You will thoroughly enjoy them. N.a.v. ’n leser van Lydenburgstraat 23 wat erg te kere gegaan het omdat ons afleweraars die straat bemors en kru taal teenoor my en my personeel gebruik het, toe ek gaan ondersoek instel het, moet ons ’n plan maak, aangesien ons nie graag die dorp se strate wil bemors nie. Ons afleweraars wissel en ons kan ongelukkig nie individuele huisnommers uitwys waar aflewering gestaak of herstel moet word of spesifieke instruksies gee van waar die koerant ingedruk moet word nie. Ons het derhalwe besluit om die aflewering van koerante in Lydenburgstraat vanaf die bruggie tot bokant Bergstraat geheel en al op te skort. Inwoners hier, wat nog Donderdagoggende die koerant wil hê, word aangeraai

om dit by ons kantore te kom optel. Alternatiewelik kan lesers tussen agt en nege hulle koerante kry by Spaar-ORama, tussen 9 en 9:30 by Platina kafee en tussen 9:30 en 10 by 4U Office National, waar die straatafleweraars se pakke neergesit word, maar u moet gou speel, want hulle is vinnig weg. Teen 10 uur is daar ook klein hoeveelhede koerante by die meeste besighede wat by ons adverteer beskikbaar. Ons is jammer vir hierdie ongerief, maar sal nie toelaat dat ons beledig word vir ’n diens wat ons gratis en uit die liefde van die saak lewer nie. Lesers wat gereeld die koerant voor of by hulle huise elders in die dorp ontvang, is welkom om vir ons ’n briefie te stuur, indien u soortgelyke probleme ondervind. The Nation So, the President made his state of the Nation Speech on Valentines Day. Right. He made all the right noises. He spoke about job creation, the eradication of poverty, land reform, rhino poaching, crime, education, health and taxation. He spoke about the mining sector and even mentioned Burgersfort and Steelpoort by name. He said that violent protests will not be tolerated. Yes. Good, except that we have heard all of this before.

Hulle sê dat hulle probeer help waar hulle kan, maar hulle beskik nie oor die nodige rooi plastiek waarskuwingstekens (road cones) nie. Indien iemand soos die munisipaliteit of een van die noodreddingspanne hulle dus kan help met die borg of skenking van ’n paar van die tekens, sal hulle dit hoog op prys stel. Meanwhile, back here in good old SA, the education system promotes children with 30% pass rates. This means that 70% of the time they are clueless. Schools are being stolen brick by brick, roof sheet by roof sheet. Our health system is so dilapidated that if you are admitted to a state hospital, chances are that you will die of some infection that you were not admitted for in the first place. The President spoke about infrastructure. He mentioned De Hoop dam. The first in 20 years. If we build one De Hoop every twenty years we will all die of thirst! He spoke about roads in Mpumalanga and improving the railway system to get trucks off the roads. He did not commit a budget and target dates for repairing our roads.

He spoke about corruption and the prosecution of some 200 officials. 200. Really. In the whole of SA? I can probably find 200 corrupt officials in one building in Limpopo or Mpumalanga! Job creation will never materialize. Not as long as wages are so high that potential employers cannot afford these posts. Business will not innovate as long as we are hog tied to BEE and outrageous labour restrictions. In the boom years of Great Britain people took whatever work they could find at whatever wage. Even children worked in factories. Modern day China flourishes on these same principles. Don’t get me wrong, I am not in favour of child labour, but our labour legislation must be relaxed, not made more onerous. No Mr. President, real life in SA is totally different than you think, sir!

Food and clothes bring community together

Learners from schools in Mashishing were very grateful for receiving new school clothes and shoes at the Mashishing Drop Off Centre on Friday.

The volunteers of the Mashishing Drop Off Centre work tirelessly to cook, serve food, help children with homework and lifestyle problems throughout the year.

A plate of pumpkin, rice, beetroot salad and cooked meat awaits children at the Mashishing Drop In Centre every day after school. The menu sometimes varies but the fact that they get a nourishing meal every day never changes. Four schools in Mashishing benefit from this NGO and volunteers work tirelessly to make it a success. The schools that are part of the program is Lesodi Primary School, Marambane School, Mashishing High School and Sizo Primary School. The volunteers cook meals for about 120 children every day. Over the weekend they need to make sure that about 22 children take food home. Some of them won’t have any other food over the weekend and will go hungry if it was not for this Centre. The chairman of Mashishing Drop In Centre, Mr David Mkhabela, also said that they visit some families over the weekend to make sure that the children (especially girls) did not come to any harm. There are so many people they want to thank for helping them, especially Feed a Child, Moribo Security Mashishing, churches in Lydenburg and Mrs Cross from Lydenburg.

Lydenburg Akademie bederf motoriste Leerlinge van Lydenburg Akademie het op 14 Februarie al vroegoggend motoriste verras met ’n sjokolade en ’n boodskap op hierdie liefdesdag. Suggesting that the age of chivalry may be dead, almost 50% of men questioned said that they would not stop at the roadside to help a lady in distress trying to change a tyre. MEAN GREEN, the world's fastest hybrid truck, has broken two world speed records on Goodyear tyres. The Volvo-built truck smashed through its own international record for the standing kilometre – at 153.252 km/h – as well as the record for the flying kilometre – at 236.577 km/h – at Wendover Airfield in Utah, USA, recently. The truck is driven by its owner, Boije Ovebrink. The green monster pumps out a massive 2 100 horsepower and a massive torque of 6 770 Newton meters, allowing this special race truck to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in four seconds – impressive for a car, let alone a truck weighing six tonnes. Tyres capable of withstanding the enormous stresses are essential, and Goodyear has worked closely with Volvo on the project. The hand-built drive axle tyres are based on the 495/45R22.5 Marathon Long Haul Drive truck carcasses, while truck racing tyres fit the front axle. Both are capable of withstanding the enormous torque and speeds that Mean Green develops. Buying a House? Your Credit Rating is Your Most Important Asset

f you're thinking about buying your first home, get your financial affairs in order as soon as possible. You need a clean credit record to secure a home loan. Unless you have a clean record of servicing debt, your bank will be unlikely to grant you a home loan. But since a credit record isn't something that most people think about unless they are in financial trouble, how do you go about making sure yours is in good condition? “When you start planning to buy a house, the most important thing to do is get your financial affairs in order early,” says Kay Geldenhuys, manager of property finance processing at ooba, South Africa's biggest bond originator. “A good credit rating can't be achieved overnight, so if you are considering buying a house in the next few years, you should do what you can to score well right away.” The golden rule of credit is that you can't get it until you've had it. This isn't as impossible

as it sounds – it simply means that you should start small to prove that you're responsible so that your bank will look favourably on your home loan application when the time comes. “While it may seem financially responsible not to get into debt, the banks have no other way of assessing what you will do with credit.” Store credit, cell phone accounts and bank loans – especially for other assets like cars – are a good way to start. A credit card also has a strong influence on your credit score, so try to include at least one credit card in the mix. Then be absolutely diligent about making repayments. Paying back your credit card balance has a significant impact on your score, but missing a payment or not paying the minimum instalment is also more detrimental. “Obviously, it's not just having the credit, but how you deal with it that the

banks are assessing,” explains Geldenhuys. Any unpaid credit card debt or store credit will reflect on your credit record, but another thing that can have a serious negative impact is an unpaid account like a doctor's bill resulting in a dreaded blacklisting. The National Credit Act has issued legal steps that credit providers have to follow before blacklisting a person. If these have not been followed, the blacklisting can be legally challenged and removed. “Every South African is entitled to check their credit record for free once a year,” says Geldenhuys. “This can be done through any of the 11 registered credit bureaux in South Africa, but can be a tedious process. It is a good idea to use the services of a professional credit rehabilitation provider to get your report and also to assist you with any action you need to take to clear your credit record and improve your rating.” Paying a bad debt is not enough to rehabilitate your credit rating, so a credit rehabilitation provider like ooba's partner, Lucid Clear Credit, will take the legal steps to ensure that your report is updated immediately.

“This is particularly relevant if time is of the essence like when you are putting an offer in on a house,” says Geldenhuys. According to Adv Randolph Samuel, director at Lucid Clear Credit, most people are shocked the first time their credit report is explained to them. “The credit report is your financial report card,” he says. “It reflects your financial health – what you spend your income on, whether you can afford the debt you have and whether any lender has taken legal action against you for non-payment. Based on your creditworthiness, a lender can then decide whether to approve your application for a home loan.” While there are steps that can be taken to rehabilitate a bad credit record, the best way to be financially healthy is to pay your bills on time and in full. “It's not complicated,” says Geldenhuys. “To ensure a good credit rating, don't get into more debt than you can afford, and then make sure you pay it back – it's good practice for repaying a home loan.” Information supplied by Alit Fourie, Principal of Huizemark Properties Lydenburg, 89 Viljoen street.
