2 Maar t/ 2 March Shavatho n Day CANSA Shavathon is one of South Africa's best-loved events in support of a very worthy cause, namely showing solidarity with those affected by cancer. Losing one's hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy – so shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors. Colouring your hair or paying a Bail Out Fee have become options for those who prefer not to shave, or who can't shave on the day. For those who like to be actively engaged and to make a difference, Shavathon embraces volunteers. Their support is invaluable. 2013 – Shavathon of the Decade This is our 10th national CANSA Shavathon, independently managed by CANSA staff and volunteers, and we are hoping it will be the Shavathon of the decade! Show your support by bringing 10 other people along – the options are endless – you can shave, spray or gel your hair OR do all 3! CANSA Shavathon is being held in workplaces & organisations from the 25th February to 1st March 2013 and in Shopping Centres on Saturday, 2nd March 2013.

Department of Finance Police warn against scams has new Head POLICE in Mpumalanga would like to warn the community about a scam that continues to rip-off people of their hard earned cash. The mastermind of the scam lures unsuspecting people into believing they are selling engines of motor vehicles. The area that has been hit hard is Bethal with three cases reported. People who have been robbed alleged that they saw an advertisement on the internet, newspapers and some even received calls from these men about engines that were on
sale. They will ask the people to deposit money into their bank accounts and the rest will be settled when they come to collect their goods. They later noticed that the act was a bogus transaction when the people claimed to be selling the engines could not be found and their cell phones have been switched off since then. We urge the community not to enter into any agreement with people they do not know, especially were money is involved.

Lydenburg inwoner skryf: Op die hoek van Jansen en Lydenburgstr’e is daar ‘n waterlekkasie vir drie jaar wat al hoe groter en groter geword het. Ontelbare liters water is daarmee heen en na vele oproepe na die personneel en raadslede van Thaba Chweu is die probleem uigesorteer. Ek weet daar is hordes probleme in ons dorp en almal voel dat hul probleem groter as die ander s’n is maar aanhouer wen tog.

oorhierso, my mond is bitter hieroor. Ons beleef te veel van 'n oorlewingstryd op eie bodem teen misdadigers wat klaarblyklik die hef in die hand het. Ek sal nie Oscar Pistorius oor dieselfde kam skeer as 'n moordenaar nie. Ek voel baie 50-50 oor sy saak. En ek bid dat die waarheid sal uitkom want ek voel die hele waarheid is nog nie met ons gedeel nie. Die moord van Reeva Steenkamp is vir my net ’n bewys van hoe Suid-Afrikaners gedwing word om hulself te beskerm...of daar nou gevaar is of nie. Maar hierdie verkragters... op 'n ander noot... is banaal. Hierdie siek-storie van die Bredasdorp-vrou het dadelik die verbeelding van alle Suid-Afrikaners aangegryp. Al die briewekolomme van koerante, die internasionale media wat ons toesak maak die feit duideliker dat die misdaadsituasie in 'n krisis van enorme omvang is. Dit moet met mening onderstreep en opnuut die vraag geopper word: Wie is in beheer, die regering of die misdadiger? Dit is seker so dat 'n gruweldaad van tyd-tot-tyd in alle samelewings voorkom. Hierdie ding pla my. Wat my eintlik kwel is dat misdaadstories te algemeen raak in ons land. As jy iemand vertel van 'n diefstal of iets dergliks, weet hulle dit eintlik al. Want toe dit met hulle gebeur het, is dit en dat gesteel. Die diewe het só te werk gegaan, en dis wat húlle verloor het. As hulle nog nie slagoffers was nie, het vriende of familie al deurgeloop. Dit voel soms of mens deur die oppervlakkige voorkoms van mense moet breek om jou eie misdaadstorie te laat geld. Dis 'n ongewone versperring om deur te breek. Die afgelope naweek is my broer se huis in Pretoria plek-plek gestroop. Helder oor dag, hy het net gou gaan kruideniers koop. Misdaad maak my sinies. Ons word getref deur sinnelose misdadige geweld en kruip net al hoe dieper agter die venstertralies weg. Misdadigers se botter en brood word ons stadige dood.

Mr M. J. Matemane from Burgersfort writes: In response to the article in the Sowetan in which Angie Motshekga plans to make our educational system out of the quagmire in which it is at present, let me state this categorically from the onset that Angie will not succeed in this venture. This is populist rhetoric and she will not translate it into action. Never, I say. Next year this time, the so called lazy teachers will still not report to work on time, will still knock off early and will still bunk classes. The envisaged system that is to be installed at schools to monitor all teachers will be utterly ejected and repulsed by the government's bed mate, namely SADTU. Definitely this will and rightfully so be regarded as witch-hunting. The fault does not lie with the present reporting system. No. It lies with the manner in which the Education Department handles cases of truancy of teachers. It leaves the principal and is lieutenants vulnerable. Some are being intimidated, while others are killed for reporting truancy cases. Reporting and teaching are miles apart. A teacher can report in the morning but still bunk lessons or go to classes to while away time. A teacher may report as required in the morning and go on errands and comes back towards school out in order to, officially knock
off. What if some teachers, secretly and deliberately damage the scanner? Heads of schools are afraid of reporting absenteeism and late coming for fear of reprisals It is true that the department does not get full reports on absenteeism, because the very same department does not give the heads the necessary support. It is ironic to hear Angie referring to visit of politicians to schools. These very politicians do not lead by example. They themselves fail to attend parliament sessions. They must see the log in their eyes first. Angie asked, in vain, parents, principals, and heads of department to monitor learning. But Angie knows very well that this will not go well with SADTU. Poor principals. They are caught in crossfire. Angie encouraged parents to question school principals about the quality of learning and teaching. But Angie is aware that her teachers go to school and to class without having prepared themselves for the subjects they teach. And Angie knows very well that her teachers do not allow anybody to peep into their work or listen to them teaching. Yet she pretends not to be aware of that. The fingerprint reporting will be thrown into dustbins. The cancer that is busy corroding our educational system is incurable.

SO ’n jaar of wat gelede het ek geskryf dat ek as Afrikaner nie baie probleme het met Afrikanerkultuur soos jukskei gooi, volkspele en kampvure nie. Dis lekker. Maar skaapkop eet was uit. Hier het ek die streep getrek. Nie my kultuur nie. Lydenburg se “Skaapkop Gilde” het beswaar gemaak teen my stelling en onderneem om my opvoeding te verbeter. gestel en die ander ouens, te veel om te noem, het die skaapkoppe voorsien, voorberei, die braaiwerk gedoen en geëet. Die geselskap en kuier was uit die boonste rakke! Daar was so 26 manne by die geleentheid. ’n Spitbraaier is spesiaal ontwerp en toegerus met rakke vir die skaapkop braai. Volgens Piet Rabie is die geheim in die voorbereiding. Die kop word gekrap, neusholtes met sout en water onder druk uitgewas, elke kliertjie verwyder (uiters belangrik) en die koppe ’n nag lank in skoon water laat lê. Dan word dit vooraf in ’n oond gekook, vir sowat vier ure op medium tot lae hitte. Daarna word hulle op die spit geplaas en duur die gaarmaakproses nog so twee of meer ure op ’n goeie gas-spitbraaier. Na ’n paar van Francois se stewige sie gesê, in
brandewyne en Coke (nog kultuur), was ek half verlam en kon ek die skaapkop met permissie gesê, in die oë kyk. Die buitekant was lekker “crispy” gebraai en proe soos ’n skaap op die spit. Lekker. Ek het egter die streep by die oog en tong getrek en myne aan een van die ander professionele eters geskenk. En dat daar ouens is wat smaaklik kan weglê aan skaapkop hier tussen ons, is ’n feit. Ek het die foto’s, maar ek gaan hulle nie plaas nie. Veral nie die skaapkoppe nie, hierdie is immers ’n gesinskoerant! Terloops, die boetebeker (deel van die ritueel) het die pragtige bedrag van meer as R 3 000-00 opgelewer, wat die manne aan Rusoord ouetehuis gaan skenk. So, is ek beïndruk met hierdie deel van ons kultuur? Ek het respek daarvoor en vir die ouens wat die tradisie steun en bewaar. Die ritueel is beslis tradisie wat behoue moet bly, maar vir my persoonlik is dit soos boeremusiek. Dit is OK, maar ek luister eerder na Pink Floyd, of eet ’n forel!

Pienk wyne proe vir Wyngilde Stigting van Hibiscus tak - VLU
Pienk Wyne was die tema van die Lydenburg Wyngilde se onlangse wynproe by die Spur, aangebied deur Keldermeester Martin Mulder. As voorsmaak het dr. Jakkie Swanepoel, die Gilde se voorsitter, 'n paar moeilike vrae uitgedeel wat net die ernstige wyndrinkers kon beantwoord – sommer vir die pret. Die groep was dit eens dat die Theuniskraal Muscat Rosé die wyn van die aand was, maar daar was heelwat opwinding met die proe van die Hillendale Dry Rose, die Delheim Pinotage Rosé en First Sighting uit die Strandveld. Daar is aan die einde van verlede jaar eenparig besluit om Lydenburg en Kannabas takke saam te smelt. 'n Nuwe naam moes gevind word want Kannabas/Lydenburg Tak wou net nie lekker op die tong val nie. Tydens die Februarie vergadering is daar onder leiding van die voorsitster, Elona Potgieter, op Hibiscus besluit. Diè is natuurlik nie net 'n pragtige blom nie, maar ook die plant waarvan die Okra peul, wat in sop en bredie gebruik kan word, afkomstig is. Na afloop van die vergadering het me. Potgieter trofees oorhandig. Baie geluk me. E. Brits met: die meeste punte in die Lydenburg tak, meeste punte in gebak, meeste punte tydens konferensie en me C. Havenga: meeste punte in gebottel. Daarna het almal mekaar oor 'n lekker koppie tee en koek beter leer ken. Ansie Botes en Petra Bekker was die gasvrouens.
Straatligkinders kom Nelspruit toe DIE gewilde Afrikaanse rockmusiekgroep, Straatligkinders, gaan op Vrydag, 8 Maart lewendig in aksie wees by Church Unlimited in Nelspruit. Dit is nie die eerste keer dat hulle plaaslik te siene sal wees nie, maar met hulle nuwe album “Konings met Verskonings” wat onlangs die lig gesien het, moet plaaslike aanhangers nie hierdie show misloop nie. Straatligkinders (SLK) is oorspronklik van Potchefstroom en hulle het in 2006 op die plaaslike musiektoneel verskyn toe Hein
Kruger (baskitaar) en Bennie de Jager (hoofkitaar) besluit het om iets nuuts in Afrikaans te skep. Aanhangers kan ’n vertoning vol pret en geluk verwag: Saamsing wysies en prettige danspassies is karaktertrekke van hulle nuwe styl van musiek. he Pulana Maroga Community Socio Development (PMCSD), in conjunction with Pulana Maroga Community Trust (PMCT), staged a career exhibition for the local schools in the area near ASA Metals. About 1 650 students attended the event. A few Government departments, as well as ASA Metals presented to the scholars with regard to job opportunities in the mining and smelting industry, bursaries and learnerships. ASA Metals was the only local mine that attended the event, and also cofunded the event with R5000.00, while PMCT was the main funder. Datsun is coming back! DATSUN is coming back to South Africa with a new budget car to be launched before the end of 2014. The brand was discontinued globally in 1981 in favour of Nissan – and that’s how it’s been since, but now the Chinese sales onslaught into Africa is becoming overwhelming and this is how Nissan plans to fight back. The news follows a global decision in 2010 to re-introduce the Datsun brand as part of the company’s ambitious Nissan Power 88 mid-term plan to achieve eight percent of the global market and eight percent operating profit by fiscal year 2016. Vincent Cobee, corporate vice-president at Nissan, told Wheels24: “The return of Datsun is integral to our expansion in fast-growing markets where there is a mushrooming upwardly-mobile segment. Datsun’s key values – accessible, reliable and modern - are designed to accommodate the needs and aspirations of this target group, just as it did for similarly optimistic customers in Japan, America and a large part of the world during most of the 20th century.” Datsun will be re-established with a strong independent brand identity alongside Nissan and Infiniti. Mike Whitfield, MD of Nissan SA, said: “Following Infiniti’s launch in 2012 we are delighted that SA will also be a destination of choice for the Datsun brand which enjoyed a proud heritage in this country after the Bluebird made its debut at the Pretoria Show in 1958. “The 120Y and SSS models were household names before going on to become the No.1 brand from 1976 and 1978.”

The Datsun brand was created in 1931 by the DAT Motorcar for a new car model, spelling it as Datson to indicate its smaller size compared to the existing larger DAT. In 1934, Nissan acquired DAT and the last syllable of Datson was changed to "sun", because "son" also means "loss" in Japanese. The name also a refers to the Japanese rising sun national flag hence the name "Datsun". Nissan phased out the Datsun brand in March 1986, but not before the brand created the 510, Fairlady roadsters and 240Z coupes.

Chevy Spark Pronto - A van? NOT every business needs a bakkie: Think florists, travel agents, pharmacies, boutiques, milliners, bakeries, couriers, even pizza delivery guys. A small van, perhaps? Yes, but a van is slightly plumberish, secretive, its contents hidden from view – park one on a suburban Jozi street corner and see how long it takes until a police van comes by. A small van with windows, then? Which is precisely what General Motors Africa came up with, when its marketeers had thoughts of a revamp for the popular Chevrolet Spark. A light went on in somebody’s brain that flashed “ditch the rear seats, put in a fibreboard lining and some nice security bars across the rear windows and”, well, the result was the Spark Pronto – a clever name that suggests delivery with speed, Mexican cheek and, with some smart sign-writing, a distinctive little work vehicle. The front end and drive train are exactly the same as the entry-level Spark Campus (including aircon). The boot and ex-rear seat space can take floral displays standing up, you’ve got three doors to access the load volume from all sides and it all looks smart and professional. Given you have a business with VAT exemption, the Spark Pronto will cost you R89 000. Which gives you a seriously cute delivery van with a 60kW / 108Nm engine and a 275kg payload that should easily manage around six litres/100km around town. And given that roof rails can be fitted to any Spark, you’ve a roof rack for longer items. It’s pre-wired for your own sound system and safety gear includes front air bags and anti-lock brakes. The front seats are separated from the load bay by a sturdy tubular divider and lining so if you have to park your Pronto in a dodgy area, it’s likely your cargo will stay safe – at least for a while! McLaren supercar to produce combined 673 kW MCLAREN Automotive released the first details of the powertrain fitted to its forthcoming P1 hypercar. The P1 will feature a significantly upgraded version of the 3,8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine coupled with a lightweight electric motor, developed by the McLaren Electronics arm of the group. Together, they are set to produce 673 kW of power and 900 N.m of torque channelled to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. For application in the P1, McLaren’s M838T V8 engine produces 542 kW at 7 500 r/min with 720 N.m of torque available from 4 000 r/min, or 82 kW and 120 N.m more than the example fitted in the latest MP4-12C. Mounted directly to this engine is an electric motor able to instantly generate up to 131 kW of supplementary power via a steering wheel-mounted IPAS (Instant Power Assist System) button. The P1 can also be driven in E-mode (using only the electric motor) for up to 10 km and, significantly, is claimed to boast an emissions figure of less than 200 g/km. A Formula-One-derived DRS system, linked to the P1’s massive wing, is also accessible via a steering wheel-mounted button and is able to reduce drag by as much as 23 per cent when required. The wing will remain in this low drag setting for as long as the driver holds the button down or until the brake pedal is touched. No word yet on the claimed performance figures. Ons toets die VW Golf 7 - 1.4 TSI Comfortline KORT op sy bekendstelling in Lydenburg, het ons die geleentheid gehad om die nuwe Volkswagen Golf 7 te toets. Die toetsmodel was die middelvlak Comfortline 1.4 TSI, (R264 900 soos getoets). Daar is ook ’n 1.2 en 1.4 Trendline en twee Highline modelle (een ’n diesel) beskikbaar. Moenie ’n fout maak nie. Hierdie Golf het bykans alles. Daar is elektriese ruite, sentrale sluit, outomatiese binnespieël, smukspieëls met liggies in die sonskerms, elektriese buitespieëls met flikkerligte, sesspoed ratkas, 1.4 turboenjin met hope krag, togbeheer, ritrekenaar, klankstelsel (agt luidsprekers) met raakskerm, USB en iPod in, met stuurwielkontroles en ’n CD magasyn in die paneelkissie vir jou CD’s, lugsakke rondom, lugversorging met uitlate vir die agterste passasiers, outomatiese hoofligte wat self na skerp of domp oorskakel soos nodig, outo ruitveërs, volgroote spaarwiel, agtersitplek met middelkonsole wat uitvou en ’n flappie wat uitvou vir ski’s, togbeheer, Bloutand, ABS, EBD, ESP, ASR, EDL, EDTC, traksiebeheer, elekroniese nood en parkeerrem wat self aanskakel as jy in ’n ongeluk is, “Bluemotion” tegnologie wat skadelike uitlaatgas verminder en puik brandstofverbruik bevorder en nog meer. Instrumente is volledig en duidelik. Op Comfortline kry jy chroombeslag aan die binnekant, ander wiele en op Highline kry jy sportsitplekke, ander binne beligting en nog meer chroom. “Park Assist”, leer, navigasie en DSG ratkaste is onder andere as opsies beskikbaar. In die 1.4 TSI Trendline en Comfortline maak die turbo-enjin 90 kW, en in Highline 103 kW. Die 90kW enjin trek soos ’n bom en is in staat om bulte in sesde rat kaf te draf. Die motor versnel goed en is verbasend vinnig. Ek moes gereeld die instrumente dophou om binne die spoedperk te bly, want daar is geen wind- of enjingeraas nie. Daar is wel ’n bietjie padgeraas. Ratskakeling is uitstekend. Vierwielskyfremme bring dinge blitsig tot bedaring as jy bietjie haastig raak. Die remme is werklik fenomenaal. Die motor hanteer goed. Om veilgheid te toets het ek dit gedruk tot op 180, en was stabiliteit steeds uitstekend. Brandstofverbruik behoort goed te wees, want die enjin draai net teen 2 500 omwentelinge per minuut (opm) teen 120 km/u. Teen 140 loop die enjin teen 3 000 opm en teen 160 loop dit 3 500 opm in sesde. Hierdie syfers is belangrik. Hoe laer die omwentelinge op hoë spoed, hoe meer ekonomies en hoe minder “werk” die enjin hard, wat lewensduur sal verleng. Die motor word beskerm teen diefstal deur onder andere die “DataDot” stelsel wat nou wyd gebruik word en eerste deur Nissan in SA gebruik is. Ek is beïndruk. Die Golf 7 getuig, soos al sy voorgangers, van uitnemende bougehalte. Dit is so goed dat dit amper klinies is en dit is my enigste klagte. Dit verg nie soveel bestuursinsette as bv. Astra of BMW 1 nie. Dit is moeilik om te verduidelik, maar dit is soos om ’n agterwieltrek Chev Lumina met ’n vierwieltrek Nissan GTR te vergelyk. Die Nissan is by verre beter, maar die Chev maak jou skrik, of laat jou grinnik van lekkerte. Die Golf is so goed dat dit jou foute sal vergewe. Hierdie motor is veilig, en juis daarom kan jy dalk te veel ontspan. Welgedaan Volkswagen. Inderdaad ’n “classy” motor wat jou jare se veilige en betroubare rygenot sal bied. A large percentage of home buyers are new to the property market and novices when it comes to assessing the condition of their house. A home inspection includes giving home buyers peace of mind that someone who knows what they are doing is checking the property from top to bottom, so that they are not going to end up having to make expensive repairs to correct hidden defects. Therefore a mandatory home inspection by an independent, qualified professional could be beneficial, and a simple consumer protection measure. Such an inspection, not to be confused with the evaluation or appraisal made by the representative of a bank to assess whether the property has sufficient value to secure the mortgage, would have many advantages, says Berry Everitt, MD of the Chas Everitt International property group. He says these include giving home buyers peace of mind that someone who knows what they are doing is checking the property from top to bottom, so that they are not going to end up having to make expensive repairs to correct hidden defects. This, he says, would be especially useful for first-time buyers on a tight budget. A compulsory home inspection would also give home sellers the knowledge that they wouldn't have to deal with any accusations of
non-disclosure. It would give the banks more security, in that it would, in large measure, remove buyer dissatisfaction with the condition of a property or problems with covering the high cost of repairing unforeseen or unknown defects, which are major causes of mortgage defaults. A home inspection is beneficial to estate agents because it could prevent the problems that can easily arise from seller nondisclosure and buyers later discovering defects they feel the agent should have told them about. Everitt says a home inspection as a prerequisite to the transfer of a property – on the same basis as the requirement for an electrical certificate of compliance, say, or a beetle certificate - would also have the advantage of being a preventative measure rather than the doubtful and notoriously hard to access curative options available in terms of the Consumer Protection Act or through the National Home Builders' Registration Council (NHBRC). In the case of newly-built homes, Everitt says, inspection by an independent professional would also prevent the problems arising from the fact that most municipalities currently have a serious shortage of qualified building inspectors – which would once again benefit the banks who grant building loans. Twee Steelies (Steelpoort Akademie), Chris-Marie Ebersohn en Eckhard Ebersohn het op 10 Februarie deelgeneem aan die Midmar Myl (1.609km). Beide het deelgeneem aan die ouderdoms groep 13 en onder. Daar het ongeveer 1 500 swemmers in elke afdeling geswem. Hulle het hulle baie goed van hulle taak gekwyt. Mooi julle twee!
Well known athlete from Lydenburg, Sipho Mnisi won another medal at the Benoni Marathon. He also participated in Secunda on 16 February with a time of 3:07:16 and he came 11th. He wants to thank Mr Van der Nest who took him to Secunda with the students who won bronze medals.
