enders het 31 Mei 2013 gesluit vir die installering van munisipale ingenieursdienste vir die Panorama Mall, Lydenburg en die kontrak is toegeken aan Solum Civils (Py) Ltd. Die siviele kontrakwerkers se kontrak het amptelik begin op 6 Junie 2013. Hierdie kontrak van sestien weke sluit in die dienslewering van water en riool. Die finale bouplanne is 10 Junie 2013 ingedien

en die krag en substasie is alreeds gereed. Al die ontwikkelaars en verskeie ingenieurs en kontrakteurs het Vrydag 7 Junie bymekaar gekom vir perseelinspeksie waar die nuwe Panorama Mall gaan pryk in Lydenburg. Daar word ook gekyk waar die rioolsuiweringsaanleg gebou gaan word, sowel as die reservoir wat opgesit gaan word en waarvan die pyplyding kom van ‘n boorgat in die dorp.

Marie Bothma, 'n bekende en geliefde oud-inwoner van Lydenburg, se woorde om 06:00 Maandag 10 Junie toe haar oë oopgaan op haar 98ste verjaardag Dit is nou die tweede jaar dat sy haar verjaarsdag in die bed deurbring, want die siekte het haar hierdie keer weer plat, nes laas jaar. Hierdie keer was dit net erger, longontskeking, sinus en ook 'n ernstige keelinfeksie, al drie gelyk. Dankie aan ons Hemelse Vader vir Sy Genade, en vir hierdie wonderlike moeder. Aan die dokters wat haar gehelp het, baie dankie! Ds. Willie Botha en andere, dankie vir die besoeke en gebede – dit word opreg waardeer. Dankie ook aan al die vriende en familie se hulp en ondersteuning in hierdie tyd. Dankie vir al die oproepe op haar verjaarsdag, en vir al die geskenke en koeke. En nou is sy alweer reg vir die ding. Sy spook om op te staan, maar die koue dwing haar terug bed toe. Ons weet dis net tydelik dan is sy weer op. Vir ons as kinders is sy 'n voorbeeld. Vir die kleinkinders 'n ware ouma, en die agterkleinkinders net vet pret. Lekker verjaar Ouma! Van al die kinders, kleinkinders en agterkleinkinders.

Don't waste your food

The late Mr Johan van Niekerk. Mr Johan van Niekerk passed away on Monday evening, 3 June, following a fatal car accident on the R555 from De Hoop Dam. Mr van Niekerk worked as the Contract Manager for Construction West, in the National Water Resources Infrastructure Branch at the time of his

death, and was responsible for the construction of De Hoop Dam. Some of his achievements include two successful attempts at the South African record for the volume of concrete placed in one month at the Dam, which was recognised by International experts in the field.

WHILE the planet struggles to sustain 7 billion inhabitants, more than 3,1 billion tons of food goes to waste each year. That's a third of global food production. Or, to put it another way, three out of every ten plates of food prepared, is not eaten. At the same time 20 000 children under the age of five die from hunger each day, and one in every seven people goes to bed hungry at night. This is due to a multitude of factors including the Western world's careless attitude to food, inefficient agricultural practices in less developed countries, ineffective distribution and poor storage. This disturbing picture led the UN to choose “Think, Eat, Save” as the title for this year's World Environment Day held on 5 June. The organisation draws attention to the following disturbing facts: A massive amount of resources – mostly oil and water – go into producing food. Squandering more than a third of the food produced means squandering the same proportion of resources. Another disturbing issue is the greenhouse gas produced by food rotting away in

landfills; their anaerobic gases trap 20 times more heat than CO2 and contribute to landfills' appalling reputation as the number two source of human-related methane emissions. Landfills have become a major contributor to climate change. Factors identified as some of the underlying reasons for the high incidence of food wastage problems include unnecessarily strict sell-by dates, “buy-one-get-one free” offers, the Western consumer's demand for cosmetically perfect food along with “poor engineering and agricultural practices”, inadequate infrastructure and poor storage facilities. Some food also goes to waste before it even reaches the consumer. “During the food processing process it is imperative to have an Integrated Pest Management Program in place to ensure that pests such as rodents, cockroaches or flies do not contaminate the production line with skin, hair, faeces or transmitted bacteria . Families can also be brought into the picture by being told about clever storage, planting home vegetable gardens or doing more effective grocery shopping.

Op Vrydag 24 Mei het die dames van die Strelitziatak vir 'n uitstappie gegaan na die Copper Craft Africa winkel naby Witrivier en 'n heerlike dag beleef. Ons was deur die hele werkswinkel geneem en verduidelik en gewys hoe elke koper juwele stuk gemaak word met die hand. Hulle doen ook silwer ‘plating’ van enige ou silwer ware. Dis regtig 'n heerlike belewenis om hierdie winkel te besoek en om al die mooi goed wat binne perke geprys is te gaan sien. Die VLU Strelitzialede Lydenburg is me. Lucy Swanepoel, Makkie Ras, Heather Aspeling en Bevvie Marias met die eienaar van Copper Craft Africa Michael Bam links en Pieter Ras regs.

Dis 'n kru en harde feit. Misdaad neem ons land oor. Dit is seker so dat 'n gruweldaad van tyd tot tyd in alle samelewings voorkom. Maar Suid-Afrikaners voel vere vir die misdaadsituasie elders in die wêreld, hoe erg dit ook al mag wees. Ons beleef te veel van 'n oorlewingstryd op eie bodem teen misdadigers wat klaarblyklik die hef in die hand het. Op Hoorhiersô is daar dus 'n kwelling. Hierdie ding pla my. Want statistiek bewys dat die unieke gevalle van misdaad nie so uniek is nie. Onthou julle die pa wat sy eie dogter geskiet het in die oprit omdat hy geglo het 'n kaper ry met haar kar weg? Hoe tragies. Wa t m y e i n t l i k k w e l i s d a t misdaadstories te algemeen raak in ons land. As jy iemand vertel van 'n diefstal of iets dergliks, weet hulle dit eintlik al. Want toe dit met hulle gebeur het, is dit en dat gesteel. Die diewe het só te werk gegaan, en dis wat húlle verloor het. As hulle nog nie slagoffers was nie, het vriende of familie al deurgeloop. Dit voel soms of mens deur die oppervlakkige voorkoms van mense moet breek om jou eie misdaad storie te laat geld. Dis 'n ongewone versperring om deur te breek. Misdaad maak my sinies. Ons word getref deur sinnelose misdadige geweld en kruip net al hoe dieper agter die venstertralies weg. Misdadigers se botter en brood word ons stadige dood.

OLD GRUMPY Old age BEING involved in an old age home and having friends working at centres for the disabled, I see a particular aspect of life that many do not think about often. The Nelson Mandela story also got me thinking. Now in nature, the old and the frail are chased away. They no longer enjoy the comfort and the safety of the herd. Human beings tend to call themselves civilised. That concept is defined by human’s ability to show compassion, to care, to have emotions and because they simply have a

mind that considers consequences. Things like empathy and ethics come into play. That is why we are civilised. The African term Ubuntu comes to mind. But what happens in real life? Why do we have old age homes and centres for the disabled? Sometimes we say we simply cannot cope with the aged and off they have to go. Now very often you never see the children again, or when you see them it is because they find fault with everything in that particular place of shelter. Is their conduct perhaps originating from a “guilty” concience? I believe old age homes provide a dignified place of residence for senior citizens, provided it is done correctly. It is often the best that can be done for them and many such institutions do their utmost to work with sometimes “difficult” senior citizens and children, providing what they can, within their means. It is generally a civilised institution. The Nelson Mandela story is a case in point. The old

man has lived his life. For all practical purposes it is over. Instead of allowing him his last days in peace and with dignity, every politician and family member (and the press) were circling like hyenas, waiting for him to die. In the meanwhile they bask in the publicity. What a shame. What a scandal! It is obvious that our human civilisation is but a thin veneer, something that is as fragile as an old oom or tannie. The fact is that Ubuntu and all our talk is false. Like animals, we tend to circle like hyenas, to see if we inherit something, or to fight the fact that we are losing that loved one and that we now have a guilty concience. Nature should take its course. People are born and they die. As “civilised” people we can only provide the means and the best possible care, but we should never ever erode the dignity of frail people.

FORD Motor Company’s ultrafuel efficient and spirited 1.0litre EcoBoost petrol engine was named 2013 International Engine of the Year, marking the second straight year F o r d ’s a c c l a i m e d t h r e e cylinder engine has captured the award. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost – which combines direct fuel injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing to lower fuel consumption without sacrificing power – received the highest score in the history of the awards. The engine also won the “Best Engine Under 1.0-litre” category at the annual awards presented by Engine Te c h n o l o g y I n t e r n a t i o n a l magazine. Boba Motoring already got tongues wagging earlier this year when the company unleashed a 549kW modified Golf 1, and now they're outdoing themselves with the 1000 horsepower Golf you see here.

Translate that to metric speak and we're talking 745kW here, from a 1.8-litre 16valve engine with one mother of a Garrett GTX4202R turbocharger strapped to it. Stressed does not begin to describe how this engine must feel. At least the power deliver process has been given a boost, with the fitment of a six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox and a 4Motion system that transfers power to all four wheels. They're not claiming any performance figures as yet, although the hyperGolf is being subjected to some testing. iol.motoring

• TUFF GUARD SPRAY-ON BAKKIE LININGS

Ons toets die VW “Beetle” 1.4 TSi Sport DSG EK het begin 1975 vir my met my “army” bonus ’n spiksplinternuwe VW Beetle Luxbug gekoop. Dit was toe ’n fenomenale motor, waarmee ek nie ’n enkele probleem gehad het nie. Ek het dit slegs verkoop omdat ek die Chev SS gekoop het. So twee / drie jaar terug het ek die nuwe Beetle gery en ek was nie te beïndruk nie, veral nie met die blompot op die paneelbord nie. Dié week het ek egter die heel nuwe VW Beetle 1.4 TSi Sport DSG gery. Wat ’n motor! Die blompot is weg en die nuwe lyne is pragtig ontwerp. Die nuwe “kewer” is inderdaad ’n pragtige motor. Maar, jy moet hom gaan ry! Binne was daar op ons toetsmodel volleer sitplekke, stuurwiel en rathefboom. Aluminium pedale (net 2, want die DSG werk soos ’n outomatiese ratkas), togbeheer, agtspreker klankstelsel met groot skerm, Bloutand, iPod in, ses lugsakke, twee paneelkissies, klein multifunksie stuurwiel wat op en af en teleskopies kan stel, heerlike sitplekke, klimaatbeheer lugversorging, sondak met agt verstellings (op ons toetsmodel) DSG ratkas met tikfunksie en “paddle shift”, Bi-Xenon hoofligte (opsie) met daglig LED ryligte, misligte voor en agter, drukvlerk agter, sentrale sluit, elektriese ruite en spieëls en 18 duim wiele. Daar is ABS, ESP, ASR en HHC en ’n ritrekenaar wat die gebruiklike wys. Wielopsies wissel van 16, 17 en 18 duim allooi. Die komsitplekke is knus en hou jou behoorlik vas. Twee enjinopsies is beskikbaar. ’n Agtklep 1.2 wat 77kW en 175Nm maak en die een wat ons gery het, ’n sestienklep 1.4 met turbo en superaanjaer (TSi) wat 118 kW en 240Nm maak. En manne, loop hierdie 1400! Ek het gewag tot die pad skoon was en by Laske Nakke onder op die brug stilgehou. Toe trek ek weg en gee die Volla pak! Toe ek bo-oor die knop bo gaan, versnel dit nog steeds met die snelheidsmeter op 180 en die toereteller net oor die 4000 opm! Die motor is rotsvas stabiel. Dit klou om draaie met geen bakrol nie en die veerstelsel is glad nie te hard nie. Remme is skitterend. Die bougehalte is verstommend. Dit voel of die motor uit ’n blok graniet gekap is. Daar is geen ratels nie en hoegenaamd geen onderstel of vering geluide nie. Dit is stil. Die klankstelsel is baie goed. Hoewel dit net twee deure het, is die bagasiebak lekker ruim en die enjin sit op die regte plek - voor! In terme van kritiek, dink ek die mooi blinkswart op die paneelbord sal stof gou wys en dieselfde blinkswart op die vensterkosyne kan dalk maklik krap. Andersinds is daar geen klagtes nie. Ek dink inteendeel Volkswagen het vir hulleself ’n probleem geskep. Hierdie is ’n mini Golf GTI (so goed loop dit en so aangenaam is die rit), wat baie mooier is as die Golf en veel billiker geprys is. Ons toetsmodel met al die ekstras, staan op die vloer vir net R348 730. Dit klink na baie, maar glo my, jy kry baie motor vir jou geld. Die nuwe VW Beetle 1.4 TSi DSG skuif op my begeertelys na heelbo, as ’n vervanging van ma se huidige motor. En glo my dit sê baie, want in die prysklas het jy baie keuses. Andre Coetzee.

Astra OPC - Ons toets die monster MOET my nie verkeerd verstaan nie. Hierdie monster is eintlik ’n feëtjie, so mooi is dit. Maar as jy haar pak gee wys sy naels en tande. As jy aan die slaap is, sal sy jou uithaal. Die Astra OPC plaas die kroon op Opel se geskiedenis in Suid Afrika. Van die dae van die SuperBoss Monza’s af, was tweeliter Opels ’n krag om mee te reken. Die GTI en ST manne sal jou baie stories van hulle motors vertel, maar van toeka af, het tweeliter Opels die kompetisie met spoed en krag altyd vermorsel. Ek het ’n warm Monza en ’n Astra gehad, ek weet. Vandag het ons bougehalte wat vergelykbaar is met net die beste in die wêreld. Ons het rekenaarbeheer en elektroniese hulpmiddels om dit in ’n reguit lyn en om draaie op die pad te hou. Maar ons het nog steeds die legendariese tweeliter, dié keer met ’n turbo so groot soos Kroonstad! Binne is die OPC soos enige koepee beknop agter, maar Jacques van IT@ Large was agterin en hy is nie ’n klein outjie nie. Hy sê hy was gemaklik, maar ek twyfel of hy tyd gehad het om rustig te raak. Pierre het links voor soos ’n dogtertjie gegiggel van lekkerte. Die nuwe Astra OPC kom met al die luukses en speelgoed. Die voorste deel van die geperforeerde leersitplekke kan stel. Beter nog die kante van die komsitplekke kan elektries stel om die sitplekke wyer of nouer te maak. Die beste plan is nouer, sodat hulle jou vashou. Daar is dubbesone klimaatbeheer, elektriese ruite, spieëls en elke ding. Daar is HyperStrut voorvering om wringstuur uit te skakel en ’n Watts Link agterveerstelsel. Daar is geboorde en geventileerde Brembo remme op al vier hoeke. Twintig duim wiele. Die gebruiklike lugsakke, ABS, ESP Plus, PRS, DRL, HSA, TC, AFL, Bi-Xenon ligte, Isofix ankers, USB en iPod in, Bloutand, verskillende kleure vir instrumentasie ens. is alles daar. Op normaal verstelling is die veerstelsel lekker sag, die motor se enjin mak en baie ekonomies. Op “Sport” is die vere bietjie fermer, die enjin wakkerder en al die kontroles skerper. Op “OPC” spoeg die katjie. Die vere is hard, die varieerbare kragstuur (met multifunksies) is skerp, die turbo skreeu soos ’n speenvark en jy kry tonnelvisie. Die tweeliter Ecotec enjin maak 206kW en 400Nm. Die 0 tot 100 lopie duur 6.2 sekondes en die motor is elektronies beperk tot 250 km/u. Die elektroniese enjin omwenteling beperker kom sag maar ferm in en veroorsaak nie ’n gestotter nie. Ek ry normaalweg nie ’n motor so hard dat die beperker inkom nie, maar in OPC verstelling het die Opel my uitgevang. Dit versnel so hard en vinnig dat ek tweede rat nie vinnig genoeg kon haak nie, daarom weet ek nou van die beperker! Dit is werklik so. Voet in die hoek kan jy voel hoe die hulpmiddels werk om die krag op die pad te sit en jy kan nie jou hand van die rathefboom afhaal nie. Ek het nie plek (die regte pad) of tyd gehad om sesde rat te sien nie maar teen 210 km/u was die Opel so vas soos ’n brandnetel op ’n wolkombers, op die pad. Teen R435 000 is dit nie goedkoop nie, maar in die prysklas van sy enigste twee werklike mededingers, naamlik VW Golf Gti en Ford Focus ST, wat albei ook uitstekende motors is. En O ja, voor jy vra, almal weet ek is ’n V8 man en het ’n voorliefde vir ’n warm Lumina, maar hierdie Astra OPC sal ’n warm Lumina erg skrikmaak. Vanweë sy grootte, veerstelsel en padhouvermoë dink ek daar gaan net motors in die R1 miljoen en hoër klas wees wat saam met hierdie briljante motor oor die berg sal kan ry. Kritiek? My voorliefde vir rubber op die wiele is bekend. Die plat bande van die OPC gaan nie slaggat vriendelik wees nie. Daar is ook nie ’n spaarwiel nie. Jy kry ’n botteljtie “goo” en ’n 12V kompressortjie, maar as jy die “aainies” het koop hom, want dis soos Pierre sê: ”Even if I go backwards through a hedge in a ball of fire, nothing will wipe the smile from my face”! Pirate Parts? No problem UNLESS you’re a branded dealer then the term pirate parts is not politically correct. These days we call them aftermarket parts or replacement parts, but it’s just semantics. The use of pirate parts in the motor industry is common knowledge. The part itself is not necessarily inferior quality, only more affordable. Take note I did not say cheap. If you are looking for cheap then stop reading now. Pirate parts are often confused with cheap, but this is not always the case. When buying pirate parts you can usually determine the quality by the price. If the pirate part costs 10 percent of what the original part is, then beware. The normal price on a good quality pirate part is 50-70 percent of original. Regularly, so-called pirate parts can be found as original equipment on many motor vehicles. If we consider clutches, there are many cars that use the so-called pirate LUK brand, Valeo, or Sachs kits. So why do dealers claim that aftermarket spares are not as good as original parts? We o f t e n h e a r stories about people losing their w a r r a n t i e s because the brakes on their cars were repaired at a non-franchised workshop. Brakes are a safety-critical item and, as such, there are no workshops out there worth their salt that are prepared to cut corners when it comes to the s t o p p i n g capabilities of your vehicle. ATE brake pads, for instance, are found on many vehicles as original equipment. The difference between the cost of the original in its packaging and that of the same brake pads in an ATE box, is unbelievable - in some instances almost double. For the exact same pads? Could someone please explain? It’s a fallacy that when non-branded parts are used, your car becomes a death trap. The aftermarket-parts industry is thriving because original equipment is overpriced and overrated where quality is concerned. The pricing of only service items on some makes of cars cannot be justified when the very same items can be purchased as pirate parts for half the price. If we take spark plugs for instance, the cost of an NGK plug in its original package is R25 a plug. The very same plug in a manufacturers’ box is R50 a plug. A few years ago Mercedes Benz stopped their policy of discounting spares and set a fixed price on all their parts. Today some of the service items on older models are considrably cheaper than the pirate parts. If Mercedes Benz can sell their spares cheaper than the aftermarket spares places why can’t the other manufacturers do the same? This just shows that if the branded franchises chose to treat their clients as people rather than idiots, many people would still be servicing their cars with the branded dealers after warranties run out. Nasionale Bloedskenkermaand en Wêreldbloedskenkerdag, Junie 2013 Nasionale Bloedskenkermaand en Wêreldbloedskenkerdag, Junie 2013 As ŉnie-winsgewende organisasie voorsien die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens (SANBS) ŉ noodsaaklike diens om bloed, bloedprodukte, navorsing en opleiding te verskaf, en word as ŉ wêreldleier op dié gebied beskou. SANBS word deur die Wêreldgesondheidsorganisasie (WGO) onderskryf en het bepaal dat Wêreldbloedskenkerdag jaarliks op 14 Junie gevier word. Te r o n d e r s t e u n i n g v a n W ê r e l d bloedskenkerdag is Junie as Bloedskenkermaand aangewys. Bloedskenkings speel ŉlewensbelangrike rol om bloed te voorsien aan swanger vroue, kroniese pasiënte, mense wat in ongelukke betrokke was en verskeie ander mediese prosedures, insluitend kankerverwante toestande. Wêreldbloedskenkerdagis hierdie jaar besonder betekenisvol, aangesien dit die 10de jaar is dat daar wêreldwyd steun gewerf word vir die skenking van veilige bloed en bloedprodukte. Die WGO se slagspreuk vir 2013 is “Gee die geskenk van lewe: skenk bloed” wat daarop fokus om bewusmaking te verhoog vir die behoefte aan veilige bloedskenkings, asook om vrywillige bloedskenkers te bedank vir hul lewensreddende bloed. Vereistes om ŉbloedskenker te wees: Weeg 50kg of meer; Tussen die ouderdom van 16 en 65 jaar; Gesond; en lei ŉveilige seksuele leefstyl. Bloedskenkprosedure: · Die hele proses neem ongeveer 30 minute. · Jy sal ŉpamflet lees met inligting oor bloedveiligheid en risiko-gedrag. · Jy sal ŉvraelys voltooi om te bepaal of dit vir jou veilig is om bloed te skenk. Jy sal die vraelys uitvoerig met ons vriendelike verpleegpersoneel bespreek. ·

Jou ystervlak en bloeddruk sal nagegaan word. Nadat die vraelys, onderhoud en toetse jou as ŉgeskikte skenker bevestig het, begin die eintlike skenking.
