Dorp ’n ‘dump’ Die dorp is ’n ‘dump’ word natuurlik met permissie geskryf, maar as daar na sekere areas gekyk word, kan mens nie anders as om te gril nie. Verlede week het die Highlands Panorama Nuus se voorblad getuig van die giftige gasse wat vanaf die asgate elke aand oor die dorp gewaai word. Bloot omdat vullis nie reg bewerk word nie. Om dan van die huidige water en kragkrisis nie eens te praat nie. Dis ’n heeltemal ander storie. ’n Leser, Jan van der Vlugt, het foto’s geneem van ’n paar areas wat hom pla. Of eerder wat hy nie kon miskyk nie. In Platinumstraat spuit die water uit ’n pyp wat lek, in Chroomstraat, Noordstraat en Fouriestraat is kragbokse stukkend. En die rommel lê orals langs die paaie. Dis al ’n ou storie, maar hopelik kry ons eersdaags ’n nuwe antwoord.

Winter beïnvloed bloedvoorraad TERWYL die land gereed maak om iets te doen om ’n verskil te maak aan die lewens van ander op Mandeladag op 18 Julie, wil die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens (SANBS) die publiek aanmoedig om betrokke te raak by bloedskenking. Die huidige bloedvoorraad is op ’n kritieke vlak en insamelings is ook laag as gevolg van koue weerstoestande en skole en universiteite wat gesluit was. Foto’s van die skade soos in die Highlands Panorama Nuus verlede week. DIE Thaba Chweu Stadsraad is hierdie keer onskuldig! ’n Paar mense het n.a.v. die berig oor die pyp wat onder ’n huis by Tuscan Villas gebars het (sien laasweek 11 Julie se berig op bl 2 van die Highlands Panorama Nuus) navorsing gedoen en baie interessante inligting na my toe deurgegee. Die feite soos met dokumentêre bewys gesteun is as volg: 1. Die Stadsraad het destyds al opmeters en konsultante gebruik om kaarte op te stel van waar elke pyplyn, serwituut en alles onder die grond aangedui word. 2. Hierdie kaarte word gebruik wanneer dorpsbeplanning en nuwe ontwikkeling oorweeg en goedgekeur moet word. 3. Volgens die munisipaliteit se kaarte loop die pyplyn langs Ruiterstaat af, onder die spoor deur en suid teen die grens verby die plek waar Tuscan Villas vandag staan. 4. Tuscan Villas verskyn langs die pyplyn en is dus wettiglik korrek goedgekeur en gebou. Nie die Stadsraad of die ontwikkelaar het fouteer nie. 5. Vandag het ons Google Earth, wat nie destyds beskikbaar was nie. 6. ’n Hedendaagse satelietbeeld van Google Earth, op dieselfde skaal as die kaart, dui egter ’n klein verskil aan. Op Google Earth kan ’n versteuringslyn tans op die grondoppervlak waargeneem word. Dit is waar die pyplyn destyds gelê is. En daardie lyn loop onder deur Tuscan Villas en verskil van die lyn op die kaart! 7. Volgens hierdie feite is dit dus duidelik dat die destydse opmetings iewers verkeerd gegaan het en dit het heel waarskynlik tydens die kartering daarvan gebeur. Hierdie baie interessante stukkie geskiedenis toon dus aan dat beide die ontwikkelaar en die Raad in goeder trou en met die inligting tot hulle beskikking, Tuscan Villas korrek goedgekeur het, met die lyn op die grens. Baie dankie aan verskeie persone, insluitend mnre. Gideon Botes en Mossie Mosterd wat soos speurders te werk gegaan het om hiedie probleem na te vors en uit te wys. Ons kan dus niemand hier verkwalik nie. ’n Menslike fout is destyds begaan. Waar die Raad egter na my beskeie mening wel tans’n probleem blyk te hê, is met kundigheid en met die wyse waarop pyplyne leeg loop en dan weer hervul word. Niks kan bewys word nie, maar sterk vermoedens bestaan dat ontlugtingsprosedures nie nougeset en met versigtigheid uitgevoer word, wanneer watertoevoer herstel word nie. Dit het tot gevolg dat lug teen baie groot druk in die lyne opbou en iewers moet uitpop. Lesers word ook daaraan herinner dat latente foute op hulle eiendom verklaar moet word,

wanneer hullie die eiendom verkoop, aangesien hulle verantwoordelik gehou kan word daarvoor. Ek moet dus my huis se dak wat lek, of herstel, of dit verklaar aan ’n nuwe koper. Die Stadsraad het ook daarop gewys dat alle ontwikkeling en aanbouings van goedgekeurde bouplanne vergesel moet wees. Geen eiendom mag verhandel word sonder dat planne by die Raad beskikbaar is nie. he Lelievlei Housing Camp from Lydenburg decided to help areas that were affected with the water shortage the past few weeks. They supplied water in a tank to residents from Kellysville and Mashishing to fill up buckets several times. Mr Frik Rousseau, Director of Lelievlei, said that this is also part of their Mandela Month outreach. Every citizen is urged to give 67 minutes of their own time to help someone or an organisation in need during June.

n February 2013 the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) embarked on a process to biometrically register social grants beneficiaries with the aim of rooting out fraud and corruption. The closing date was set for 31 March 2013, which was then extended to the end of April 2013, by the Minister of Social Development, Ms. Bathabile Dlamini. SASSA would like to thank beneficiaries who heeded the call and responded positively to the process of re-registering for their social grants. The agency would also like to inform beneficiaries that the 90 days grace period for re-registration is ending in July 2013 and all grants not captured by then will be cancelled from the system. SASSA is aware that, for many beneficiaries, social grants are the only source of income and that was the reason why the extension of the re-registration process was set to July 2013, to allocate extra time for those who aren’t registered yet. As a result of unregulated deductions that were previously withdrawn from the beneficiaries accounts, SASSA wishes to notify beneficiaries that only one deduction of funeral policy will be allowed and the deduction will not exceed 10% of the value of the social grant amount, as permissible by the Social Assistance Act. SASSA has received complaints from beneficiaries about deductions which amount to more than the value of their grants. Such illegal deductions are perceived to be unlawfull and regarded as a criminal offence where perpetrators will face prosecution. SASSA services are free! A well-dressed black gentleman has visited several businesses in Lydenburg saying that he is raising funds for an event to be held on Mandela Day. Food will be supplied at the taxi rank in Mashishing on this day. Sounds like a nice idea. What doesn't fit is that the receipt is made out in the name of Children Safety Home, NPO 067-509. The receipt book was filled with the names of at least 10 local businesses who had donated anything from R100 to R1000. We searched the NPO, registered to Creative-kidz Pre-school and day-care, Nelspruit, for which no reports have been submitted since 2010. Men put aprons on to feed 240 people The Mashishing Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s League is an organisation that aims to uplift the community and help those that struggle through everyday life. On 5 July they put on their aprons and ran a soup kitchen for pensioners. The event took place at the Mashishing Hall. It was sponsored by Vodacom, Mini Cash & Carry, Coetzee Sand & Klip, Nick from Gas Refill and Madiba Bakery from Mashishing. Women were also part of the volunteers. This initiative was part of making a difference for Mandela Day on 18 July. The group consisted of different church denominations. This was the second time it took place and is an annual event in the community. .

Residents wait to show support R Michelle Boshoff

ESIDENTS from Lydenburg were at the Thaba Chweu Municipality on Thursday to show their support with electricity and water issues. Last week the ‘no water’ issue was on everyone’s lips as this was a catastrophe for many households. Some households were

without water for two weeks. A mass meeting was planned but not everyone showed up. The issues raised over the power and electricity are still being investigated and Thaba Chweu is working on it. On Monday the Municipal Manager, Mr Surprise Maebela issued the following

statement: Thaba Chweu Municipality acknowledges the assistance given by Super Way during the water crises. At one time, we had a belief that the problem was going to be solved in a day or overnight. Given the challenges that we faced during that process, our institutional resources were less than the work on hand. We were failing to deliver water at various

sections when our communities needed it. We want to thank Super Way for the support, providing water trucks. We hope that it is the beginning of a good relationship. On behalf of Thaba Chweu Municipality I want to thank you again for your support during this trying time, when our ageing infrastructure was failing.

Spoed is die geheim BNI Longtom Chapter (Lydenburg) het op 10 Julie ’n suksesvolle “Speed Networking” sessie aangebied by die Purple Gecko gastehuis. Sowat 20 lede en gaste het soos in “Speed Dating” elkeen een minuut gehad om sy / haar besigheid aan die persoon in die stoel teenoor hom / haar bekend te stel. Na die eerste minuut het hulle omgeruil en die ander persoon het sy / haar besigheid binne een minuut bekend gestel. Na die twee minute het gaste stoele geruil en een plek aangeskuif en is die proses herhaal. Sodoende kon 20 mense binne 40 minute elk ’n een-tot-een gesprek met mekaar

voer oor hulle onderskeie besighede. Tielman Nieuwoudt van IN2 Insurance Brokers (BVK Finansiële Dienste vir die Lydenburgers) het voorgesit. ’n Paar oudlede het kort spreekbeurte gehad en die gaste meer van BNI vertel. 10 Julie was ook die BNI Longtom Chapter se eerste verjaardag. Daar is genoem dat lede in die jaar deur positiewe mond-tot-mond bemarking byna 1.4 Miljoen Rand se besigheid tussen lede genereer het. ’n Klein kollekte is ook gehou ten bate van ’n verdienstelike persoon (Charity) in die gemeenskap. Swan's Race to gold O

NE of the Spitzkop diggers was particularly famous. He was an individual named John Swan. He had made a rich strike somewhere near Spitzkop, but always kept it a close secret. Working on his own at night, he contrived to recover enough gold to finance his own activities, although he had to take his ore some miles to water. Swan's strike was apparently on a comparatively dry piece of ground. His great ambition was to lead water to the place, and so

work it with profit. The nearest water supply was on the farm 'Olifants Geraamte', many miles away. Around the year 1878, Swan started to dig a race to lead water from this farm to his strike. Mile after mile he dug and blasted his race, laboriously following the contours through the most rugged country and avoiding gorges and faults in what must have been a nightmare of planning. Then, like a bolt from the blue, the French company Messrs Guilband & Co obtained their concession over Spitzkop. Swan's race, by then, after four years' work, was about two-thirds finished and about sixteen miles long. He had hoped to complete it by 1886. Now all his hopes collapsed. The company offered him some compensation and a twenty percent interest if he would show them his strike. He refused. Like most of his fellows, he felt that he had been cheated out of a fortune by the monopolists and concessionaires.

In bitterness of soul, he packed his belongings and abandoned his treasured strike and his water race, the most famous ever made by any digger. He removed to the Kaap Valley and prospected with James Simpson. All he found, unhappily, was death. Fever caught him. When he lay dying, Simpson begged him for the secret of his strike. John Swan just gritted his teeth and turned his face to the wall. ' It's good,' he muttered,' It's rich, but it's deep, They'll never get it.' That was the end. His strike was never found. The race still remains, a seemingly endless trench meandering around the hills, and reaching a disconsolate end within a stone's throw of the modern road down Ross Hill to the town of Sabie.

Ingwe Leopard Project Report INGWE is an independently funded research project with the aim of gathering data on the density and behaviour of leopards (Panthera pardus) outside formally protected areas (National Parks and Nature Reserves). The Lydenburg Magisterial District is known for quite a significant amount of leopard activity and is the centre of Ingwe research. Out of the 56 cameras to date the total number of cameras working properly at present including the old cameras, the three donated for use by Reading University and the 2 OTS cameras is 32. Each camera position has been given a code which will be used to identify the location on further reports and data collected. The total number of cameras used in the field this month is 36; 4 are on Luan Lombard's property to assist with a problem leopard. Comprehensive data is available from the researchers. New Mazda 3 on the way Remember the Wildevy THE third-generation Mazda3 has shown its sculpted body to the world and it promises to be a far more serious contender in the Golf class.

Mazda is only showing us the hatchback for now, but promises that a fourdoor sedan is on the way. Likely to be perceived as far more stylish than its predecessor, the new hatchback fully embraces the so-called 'Kodo' design language that's already made its mark on the latest Mazda6 and CX-5. A similar inheritance takes place beneath the surface in the form of Mazda's 'Skyactiv1' components and manufacturing techniques that aid efficiency. The latest version of Mazda's best-selling car is practically all-new from the ground up and sits on a wheel base that's been stretched by 61mm, although the length of the hatchback has been reduced by 46mm. Following segment trends, it sits slightly lower to the ground. Despite its body being 30 percent stiffer, the new 3 is up to 90kg lighter than its predecessor.

Smart Metals? Is Holden in trouble? GENERAL Motors will use a smart-material actuator on its 2014 Corvette to open an air vent in the boot to allow easier closure of the lid by preventing an airlock. This is achieved by passing an electrical current through an alloy wire that contracts and opens the vent by operating a lever. This actuator not only saves 0,5 kg on a motorised unit, but also costs less. There are several other areas in which this technology can be employed because all modern vehicles have about 200 actuators, which could result in a 100 kg weight saving. Shapememory alloys, typically made of c o p p e r / aluminium / nickel or nickel / titanium, are smart materials that can change their shape, strength or stiffness when activated by heat, a magnetic field or electrical current. A shape-memory alloy remembers its original shape and returns to it when deactivated. Durability still needs to be proven, but we welcome any weight-saving technologies. Carmag.co.za

THE Australian government has vowed to continue backing its struggling car manufacturing industry amid reports that General Motors subsidiary Holden is seeking another big bailout package. The high cost of manufacturing in Australia and a strong local currency have made it increasingly hard for car companies to compete with cheap imports, leading Ford to announce in May that it will stop making vehicles in the country by 2016. Holden, which in April announced a plan to slash 500 jobs and which is one of two remaining major players along with Toyota, said it was doing “everything in its power” to secure the future of its local operations. Holden builds the Australian-designed Commodore, which has been sold as the Chevrolet Lumina in South Africa, although GMSA will not be importing the new VF range that was unveiled earlier this year. Yet whether there will be another generation subsequent to this remains to be seen. The company refused to comment on a report in The Australian newspaper that it wants an extra AUD 265 million (R2.4 billion) from the government to survive, on top of the AUD 275 million (R2.5 billion) it was promised last year. “We are in close and constant discussions with both sides of politics - at a state and federal level - but are not in a position to publicly comment on the details of those discussions,” a spokesman said. Industry Minister Kim Carr also refused to confirm or deny any future subsidy, but stated: “What I can say... is that the Labor government remains absolutely committed to ensuring we have a prosperous automotive industry in Australia.”

Mnr. George Floyd is baie ernstig op soek na ’n ene mnr. Danie Roeloffze, wat sy hond by die Floyd’s se kennels afgelaai het. Dit was reeds op 26 Mei. Mnr. ‘Roeloffze’ antwoord nie sy telefoon nie. Mnr. Floyd het ook ‘Roeloffze’ se dogter gebel en daar is geen antwoord nie. Die registrasienommer van ‘Roeloffze’ se voertuig is DEV768MP. Mnr. he 670 learners and 50 members of staff from the Sabense Secondary School in White River Mpumalanga, were recently thrilled with the donation by Vodacom Milllionaires of a fully equipped computer centre and access to the internet. The school was awarded the computers in March of this year and on 18 July 2013 the centre will be officially inaugruated by the Vodacom Millionaires team and the school principal, Ms. Ngomane. The donated centre comprises of 20 learners' laptops, 1 educator laptop, 1 white board, 1 projector, 1 e-beam interactive white board, and a SIM in the teacher's laptop with internet connectivity. After the installation of the computer centre, teachers received training and will continue to receive support via a call centre and the equipment will also be maintained as needed.
