DIS die skouspel van die jaar in Lydenburg. Hoe dan nou anders as die matrieks pronk in hul droomrokke en aandklere om die voltooiing van hul skoolloopbaan te vier. Vrydagaand was ook nie anders nie. En toeskouers het nie mooi geweet waar om eerste te kyk nie. Die pragtige rokke, die duur en veteraan motors... en natuurlik die paartjies wat baie insiatief aan die dag gelê het soos ons voorbladpaartjie wat op ’n kruiwa ingekom het. 'n LESER het die volgende brief geskryf wat definitief 'n groot spasie verdien in die koerant, aangesien die hele dorp moet sulke morsjorse moet saamleef: “Ek wil net graag weet of iemand my kan help? Ek is op soek na Mnr Morsjors (ek het sy naam en id nr ook). Ek wil hom ontmoet om te sien hoe lyk 'n goed opgevoede blanke man wat sy vullis vir 'n geruime tyd by my perseel kom weggooi. Elke keer moet my personeel sy goed verwyder en verbrand. Dis onaanvaarbaar, die visserye pad by die De Kuilen afdraai het nie vullis verwydering deur die munisipaliteit nie, en nou is mense te lui om na die dorp se stortingsterrein toe te ry met hulle vullis. Partykeer lê daar babadoeke en nog meer swart sakke rond. Die honde in die omgewing skeur die sakke en dra alles rond. Ek het sy besonderhede in een van die bokse gekry. Hy is werksaam by 'n myn (myn se naam word weerhou), want ek het 'n voorafbetaalde kragstrokie ook gekry.” Hou die dorp skoon, daar is areas wat vir vullis uitgesit word en die vullistrok kom elke week na die verskillende woonbuurte. Gedenktuin in Dullstroom moet gemeenskapsprojek wees, dankie aan dié wat help IS dit gras werklik groener aan die ander kant van die draad? Vriende in Witbank se seun het ’n jaar gelede Australië toe geëmmigreer. Hy het verlede week met nuwe motors vir hom en sy vrou gespog op Facebook. Hy verdien dit want as 25jarige jongman het hy baie gesukkel in Suid-Afrika. Al het hy gestudeer en gewerk. Finansieël en emosioneel is dit net vir hulle beter. Hulle het uiteindelik ’n toekoms. Toevallig het ek ’n epos ontvang van ’n oudLydenburger verlede week. Toe ek haar epos lees het ek weer gehunker na daardie ‘groener weivelde.... Ek plaas dit anoniem: “Ja jong, die lewe hier is baie rustiger as in Suid Afrika. Natuurlik is een van die hoof faktore die min / lae misdaad hier. Ons bly in ’n dorp wat sowat 20 000 mense in het en ek sou skat die dorp self is so twee keer Lydenburg se grootte (sonder Mashishing natuurlik). Ek het iemand wat al sy lewe lank hier in die dorpie bly (nou al by die 50 jaar) gevra hoeveel moorde was hier al in hierdie dorp wat hy van weet of kan onthou. Jy sal my nou nie glo nie. Hy kon net vier van kind-tyd af onthou! Is dit nie ongelooflik nie? Ja, hier is beslis ook misdaad, maar nie eens by verre wat ons in SA geken het nie! Hier is nie diefwering voor die vensters of veiligheidsdeure nie. Nie eens alarmstelsels nie. Dis een uit ’n duisend huise wat ’n alarm in het... Geen sesvoetheinings voor die erf nie. Geen boemelaars nie! Niemand wat op die straathoek rondstaan of in die parkie onder die bome of op die grasperk slaap nie! Niks smouse op die sypaadjies of by die verkeerslig nie. Geen slaggate nie! Ag, ek kan nog aanhou tot vervelens toe. Maar nou kan jy verstaan wat beteken ’n "stres-lose" bestaan hier. Ek slaap soos ’n baba in die nag en wip nie van skrik as iets raas nie! Ons is baie gelukkig hier, maar verlang na al die mooi en lekker van Lydenburg. Al die familie en vriende, die winkel... Die visarend wat byna elke dag in die boom kom sit het buite die kamervenster en hard geroep het. Die tarentale en die fisante se geraas in die gras. Ja, selfs die apies wat elke jaar al ons vye opgebruik het, wek bietjie verlange... ha-haha die ou vabonde! Oe... en die Wildtuin!”
Me. Marie Bredell, Weimershoek, Dullstroom-area, skryf: Ek is verheug oor die berig in u uitgawe van 5 September 2013 oor die toestand van die Gedenktuin in Dullstroom. Mnr. Bert Oosthuizen is heeltemal korrek. Daar is egter feite om in gedagte te hou. Die grond behoort aan die munisipaliteit van Emakhazeni. Hulle het geen erg aan die netheid van hierdie toeriste aantreklikheid van die dorp nie. Alhoewel die hele dorp daarby baat vind is daar net enkelinge wat hulle oor hierdie Gedenktuin ontferm en ook hulle beursies oopmaak. Manie Bredell, Paul Pieterse en Joost Tryhou o.a. Aan die nasate van die Nederlanders en die Voortrekkers wat in Dullstroom woonagtig is, wil ek vra: help ons asseblief, want ons moet nou self ons monumente versorg. Ek doen ’n beroep op Dullstroom se gemeenskap, bied u hulp aan vir die Gedenktuin, die vlagpaal van veldk. Japie Kripe (1899) moet oorgewerf word, die gras moet gereeld gesny word, onkruiddoder moet gespuit word en die dakkie by die ingang moet herstel word. Graag bedank ek ook vir kol. Piet Schoeman, Boetie van Heerden en Manie Bredell vir die onderhoud van Ouhoutbossie. Dis vanjaar die 175ste herdenking van die Groot Trek. Die Voortrekkers het die beskwaing hierheen gebring. Ons wil graag voorstelle vir ’n herdenkingsgeleentheid

Ek gaan wag toe by ons wit hek en toe kom hy daar aan. Met ’n breë glimlag groet hy en bied sy dienste aan. My buurman en die buurvrou oorkant die pad was ook daar en hulle lig hom in oor wat gebeur het, ’n trok wat ’n paal by die vierrigting stop getref het. Ek was net ’n klein rukkie in die huis toe is die krag weer aan. Puik werk. Thank you guys. Good team work and Lesoa that really was service with a smile.

Baie dankie ook aan al die bydraes wat u laas jaar bygedra het. Ons waardeer u opreg. Hiermee wil ons graag u as die Motorfiets Klub uitnooi om deel te neem aan Liefdes Run 2013 ten bate van Wenakker, Tehuis vir Gestremde Persone. Ons hart is as volg: Om `n Liefdesfees aan te bied waar ons Sondag 13 Okt 2013 om 10h00 met `n Bikers Diens by Die Gemeentes van Christus begin, waarna ons dan direk na afloop van die diens eers deur die dorp sal ry en dan na Wenakker sal beweeg, om aan elke spesiale kind `n liefdesboks te oorhandig. Ons weet dat dit ekstra spesiaal vir Wenakker inwoners sal wees indien die Motorfiets Klub met hul motorfietse sal opdaag wanneer hierdie liefdesbokse dan uitgedeel sal word. Daar is 250 mense woonagtig by Wenakker en dit sal hoog op prys gestel word indien u kan deelneem aan die insameling van die liefdes
boksies. Inhoud van Liefdes Boksies as volg: 1x spuitgoed, 1x tandeborsel, 1x buisie tandepasta, 1x koekie seep, 1x waslap, ietsie lekkers. Pakkies moet opgemaak word vir Bo: Die foto van 2012 vrouens en mans, en se suksesvolle dag. moet dan aan die onderkant van die boksie vrou of man gemerk word. Ons benodig 250 pakkies. Indien u nie iets het om hierdie geskenkie in te verpak nie, het ons boksies beskikbaar om dit in te verpak. Hierdie jaar wil ons graag almal vra om ook asseblief `n blikkie kos (of soos u gelei word, of per boksie), by te dra. Daar is nou weer een wat beweer hy het Joost Van Der Westhuizen se motorneuronsiekte reg gedokter. En dat hy en Joost ’n plaas naby Pretoria gaan koop en nog ’n sogenaamde “wellness” sentrum daar gaan vestig. Baie van hulle het allerhande masjiene met liggies en magnete en salfies om jou te beïndruk. Ander lê jou die hande op en prewel in ’n brabbeltaal. Selfs die mal Malema was nou die dag in Nigerië sodat hy deur “Pastoor” Joshua geseën kon word en kan “oorwin”. Soos in plase en myne steel. Waarom betaal mense duisende ou
rande aan hierdie kwaksalwers? Ek dink dit is omdat hulle naïef is. So, ek verstaan dié desperaatheid. Maar die kwaksalwers prooi op hierdie mense, soos ’n pak wildehonde. Op die ou end is die kanker nog daar en is hulle net veel armer en hulle het geen waarborg om Hemel toe te gaan nie. Ek het nie raad nie. Miskien is daar alternatiewe medisynes wat werk? Miskien moet die arme slagoffers hulleself tesame met hulle behandeling, hulle eerder to God moet wend. Gebed is gratis, maar dit is dalk hoekom mense nie meer bid nie. Iets wat nie baie geld gekos het nie, beteken vir hulle niks nie. Dit moet ge“brand” wees, kompleet met logo, T-hempie en elke ding. Die kwaksalwers weet dit en gebruik dit net tot hulle eie voordeel, nie tot die voordeel van Joost of Malema of jou nie! Nee, my raad bly “Turn to God”.
More than 600 rhinos have been killed in South Africa during the first 8 months of 2013
Horn Dealers. Research done by the fact-checking website Africa Check, further revealed that the prosecution rate for rhino crimes in South Africa is abysmally low. Between January 2010 and July 2012, for instance, 573 people were arrested for rhino related crimes. Yet, in 2012, only 28 accused were convicted in 20 cases. Although there is no doubt that the demand for rhino horn is mainly from Vietnam and China, the repeated involvement of South Africa's game industry insiders continues to evade public scrutiny.
MORE than 600 rhinos have been killed in South Africa during the first eight months of 2013. The figure rises by almost three per day. The number of rhinos illegally killed in South Africa during the first 134 days of 2013 has reached a staggering 313 — just 20 less than 2010's death toll of 333. So far this year, 98 suspects have been arrested in South Africa for rhino crimes. However, the majority of people who actually end up in jail for rhino crimes are low-level “poachers” and Vietnamese couriers, says Julian Rademeyer, author of Killing for Profit: Exposing the Illegal Rhino Horn Trade. continues from page 9 Vincas have richly coloured, star shaped blooms set off against shiny green foliage that will brighten up even the hottest days of summer. They are available in hues of pink, rose and white and grow to a height of approximately 35cm. Newer varieties such as the “Flowering Favourite” Vinca 'Stardust' offer larger flowers and exceptional tolerance of hot, dry situations. Plant Vincas in a sunny position about 20cm apart. They are very versatile and are excellent performers in beds as edging, in a rock garden or grown in patio tubs, containers or hanging baskets. Vincas are particularly wonderful for mass plantings in difficult sites with reflected heat from buildings. They will perform well in almost any garden soil and once planted require minimum maintenance. If your plants have been damaged by frost, prune them right down and feed and they will once again reward you. Petunia One of the reasons why petunias are so popular is that they have always been available in such a huge range of colours. When planting Petunias, whether in containers, window boxes or beds, placing them along a north-facing wall is preferable, as it will trap a lot of heat and light. This is a prime growing position for petunias and will encourage them to flower throughout spring and summer – for up to five months! Petunias prefer a sunny position and well drained soil. Once they are established water them well, but infrequently. It is important to remember that Petunias require far less water than most other bedding plants. BMW’s R 1200 GS has won South Africa’s inaugural Bike of the Year competition by the narrowest of margins. We decided to test the latest iteration of the iconic adventure bike to see what gave it the edge over the competition. The big challenge when updating a legendary machine such as the R1200GS is finding ways to improve it without taking away from the character that gave it its lofty status. For more than 30 years the big GS, with its robust boxer motor and rugged construction, has not only dominated the adventure segment of the market, but also developed a reputation of being one of the best all-round bikes available. The Boys from Bavaria decided to take an evolutionary approach by not fixing what ain’t broken. Instead they opted for refining the bike without losing sight of the character that has made it so enduringly popular. The 1200 GS now sports an even more powerful version of the venerable horizontally-opposed twin engine, and a new concept of combined air and liquid cooling. The frame on the new bike is more rigid, while the Paralever and Telelever have been enhanced for greater steering accuracy off the road. The GS now provides four different suspension configurations that can be retrieved at the push of a button, so that suspension settings can be optimised for the various road surfaces on which the bike is likely to be used. One of the GS’ strongest points have always been how much of a Jack-of-all-Trades it is, and this characteristic has been retained in the latest version. During the review period I had the opportunity to test it in various settings – longdistance open road riding, soft-roading, playing in the twisties and highway commuting – and it took each role in its stride without as much as
batting an eyelid. It is amazing that a bike so competent in rough terrain can be so comfortable during touring and handle so well when ridden hard. An outstanding feature of the GS has always been how well-balanced it is, and this is another characteristic that BMW has retained. Riding it at a crawl in close traffic is a cinch, and although the GS is a big, heavy bike, size and weight seems to evaporate once it starts rolling. The torque from the boxer motor also helps to keep the bike feeling lively, and a quick twist of the throttle will result in instant acceleration no matter where in the rev the new GS. The most annoying of these for me was a flat spot at around 3 000 rpm – a fault that reared its ugly head both during commuting and off the road, which is the two occasions in which you tend to operate the bike in that rev range. The gearbox retains the clunkiness of the other R-series gearboxes, which is all the more noticeable on a bike as refined as
significantly updating the bike without killing its character. With the competition edging ever closer to dethroning the GS as the benchmark adventure bike, the Bavarian bundu basher will need every bit of that character to stay ahead of the pack. Dries Van Der Walt - Wheels24.co.za
YAMAHA has unveiled the FJR1300AE as part of its 2014 longdistance tourer range. The new model slides in between the FJR1300A and FJR1300AS in the range and features an electronicallyadjustable suspension system. A clutchless gear shift system made its debut on the FJR1300AS earlier in 2013 and will also be an option on the new model for those who prefer a standard gear box system. Yamaha says the electronically-adjustable suspension system is designed to enable riders to vary the suspension's performance to suit both the road's surface and the load carrying requirements. It comes with a choice of four main settings. The company said the options are selected via the easily located handlebar-mounted switch. Choices include 'One-Up', 'One-Up with Luggage', 'Two-Up' or 'Two-Up with Luggage' suspension settings. The system also offers 'Soft', 'Standard' or 'Hard' damping for each setting, tallying up a total of 12 predefined suspension set-up options. The new model also has new upside-down forks to allow the adjustable system to work. This functional addition also update’s the bike's looks and performance. Yamaha says the new forks contain independent damper mechanisms, splitting the compression and damping adjustment between fork legs. Yamaha says: “The compression damping mechanism is located within the left fork while the rebound damping is housed in the right fork - a system that is currently used on the YZF-R1 and YZR-M1 MotoGP bike.” The FJR1300AE is available from October 2013 in the UK for the equivalent of R225 620 in a choice of either bronze or black body colours. TWEE weke gelede het ons die nuwe Nissan Almera getoets en was baie beïndruk daarmee. Kleiner as die nuwe Nissan Sentra, is sy sterkste punt waarde vir geld. Ek het hom sopas weer vir twee dae gery terwyl my nuwe bakkie in is om ’n bulstafie te monteer en dink jy sal vêr soek om dieselfde waarde vir geld te vind. Die nuwe Nissan Sentra 1.6 Acenta is egter hierdie week aan die beurt. Dit is veel groter en luukser as die Sentra van 11 jaar gelede en kom heelwat bokant die Almera in, teen sowat R 230 000. Dit plaas hom vierkantig as kompetisie vir die Toyota Corrola, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and soortgelyke groottes / geprysde motors. Die nuwe Sentra is die eerste werklike mooi motor uit die Nissan stal in jare. Dit is ruim, met ’n groot bagasiebak en reuse beenruimte voor en veral agter. Buite is daar vloeiende lyne, baie chroom, LED ryligte voor en agter en netjiese 16 duim allooiwiele. Binne is die motor netjies, hoewel ietwat konserwatief, wat groot byval by volwasse kopers sal vind. Al die luukses is daar. Lugversorging, kragstuur met kontroles vir die ritrekenaar, radio / CD en Bloutand. Daar is elektriese ruite en buitespieëls, ses lugsakke, ABS, EBD, BA, ELR, ISOFIX, sentrale sluit, spoedsensitiewe kragstuur, afstandbeheerde bagasiebak oopmaak (baie gerieflik) en USB / iPod in. Daar is ’n sentrale armrus vir die agtersitplek en die ritrekenaar wys die gewone brandstofverbruik, rit kilometers, afstand voor hervul ens. Instrumentasie en waarskuligte is netjies uitgelê en alle kontroles en pedale werk lig en sag. Op die pad maak die 1.6 dubbelnok 16 klep enjin 85 kW en 154 Nm. Die Sentra trek goed en teen 120 km/u draai die enjin teen 3 400 omwentelinge per minuut (opm), teen 140 is dit 4 000 en teen 170 is dit 5 000 opm. Remme is goed. Ratskakeling is lig. Stabiliteit is goed en die motor voel rigtingvas selfs teen 170 km/u. Vering is gemaklik en effe aan die ferm kant en dit hanteer die hobbelrige Dulstroompad goed. Die motor is stil op die pad wanneer mens toer, maar die enjin gesels bietjie as jy hom van stilstaan af looi. Vir ons gewone ouens wat nie ’n Navara of Pathfinder kan bekostig nie en ’n ruim familiemotor soek wat sag op die oog is en alles in het, is die nuwe middelvlak Nissans die regte voertuie. Vir die ou wie se begroting hom beperk, of wat eerder sy geld in eiendom of die aandelebeurs wil belê, is die Almera myns insiens die beste kopie op die mark, met die nuwe Nissan Sentra eweneens ’n uitstekende keuse vir die ou wat bietjie meer soek en kan bekostig. Die Sentra is beskikbaar in ses kleure, waarvan die rooi my keuse is. Twee ratkaste is beskikbaar, ’n 5-spoed handrat (my keuse) en ’n CVT, wat sekerlik meer byval by die dames sal vind, omdat dit amper soos ’n outomatiese ratkas werk. Die CVT is duurder. Ek het geen kritiek teen die motor nie, maar ek dink ’n luukse opsie met sondak, togbeheer, leersitplekke, tikskerm navigasie met premium klank en ’n tweeliter petrol of diesel, sal ook plek in die mark hê, al is dit heelwat duurder. Die motor is mooi en ruim genoeg daarvoor. Wel gedaan Nissan. Ek is seker beide die Sentra en die kleiner Almera sal baie goed doen. Andre Coetzee.

• This is part of a series of articles the curator of the Lydenburg Museum, JP Celliers, wrote for Heritage Month. It is really interesting to see the growth of Lydenburg through the newspaper. ~ ED This was the heading on the front page of the Lydenburg News (Est. 1887) on Friday, 29 September, 1950. Sixty three years ago! I was wondering what to put together for this year's Heritage day when I remembered that we have a large range of old Lydenburg News Newspapers in our Museum Collection. As I paged though a number of editions I came across some interesting articles. This particular article was written in respect of the Lydenburg Centenary Celebrations which took place from 28-30 September 1950. And today we still celebrate Heritage Day during the month of September, the 24th. I thought it proper to share with you a few highlights of days gone by. As the heading of the article suggests, Lydenburg originated as a consequence of suffering which a party of Voortekkers endured when they settled in Ohrigstad in approximately 1843. In the following years life proved hard in their new surroundings. “Fever struck down their women and children; disease ruined their crops and killed their cattle”. This state of affairs led them to move from Ohrigstad and settle at

Krugespost (a sideline today between Ohrigstad and Lydenburg). From here they eventually settled on the farm Rietspruit, the property of Johannes Coetzer. Here a camp was erected which marks the site of the establishment of the town of Lydenburg. The “town of suffering” named after the suffering which the first inhabitants had to endure. This town with such humble beginnings was destined for greatness, as it was proclaimed the capital of the Republic in its infant days and later amalgamated with the Republic of Utrecht in 1858. In 1899 with the advent of the Anglo Boer War (18991902) it was under control of the Transvaal Republic. After the War in 1903 the town came under control of an Urban District Board with Mr. C.T. Rabie as its first Chairman. The following year it became a Village Council “and by 1927 the full status of a Town Council was conferred upon the town” reads the Lydenburg News article of 29 September 1950. The total population estimate at that time was approximately 2 500 individuals. Eleven months after attaining its status as municipality, the first Major, Mr. J.W. Goodman, welcomed delegates to the 25th annual meeting of the Municipal Association of the Transvaal. Deputy major of the first Town Council was Mr. M.J. Marren and Councillors were Messrs. D. Ruiter, F.H. Austin, J.A. Barbas, W.F. Bufe, J. Celliers, A.J. de Souza, N.J. Schoeman and P.J. Stephan. The Council chose as motto: “Per res adversas et tolerantia ad progressionem” – From suffering and endurance came progress.

Tydens die Mpuma-langa kwart-finale in Middel-burg op 6 & 7 Sept 2013 het ons seuns hul eerste wedstryd gewen teen Goedehoop 3-0. Hulle het ook van die geleentheid gebruik gemaak om hul borge te bedank. Die Nasionale Bergfiets Kampoenskappe het die afgelope naweek by Hoërskool Bekker plaasgevind. Die hoërskool bedank in besonder Longtom SuperSPAR, Longtom Cycle & Sport en Longtom Nissan vir hul borgskap en bystand.
