Michelle Boshoff Cable theft costs South Africa more than R5 billion annually and disrupts the delivery of essential services. Early Monday morning a resident in Lydenburg informed the Highlands Panorama News that electrical cables were yet again stolen during the weekend. According to an unnamed source at TCM it was the sixth time in a matter of weeks. This particular theft happened on the corner of Kriel and Berg Streets in Lydenburg. It is a well known fact that this time of year is referred to as ‘shopping season’ for criminals. But enough is enough. It raises the question with what kind of morals our society is raised. Cable theft is but one of many serious crimes, and murder, rape, theft, armed robbery and hi-jackings and other crimes are reported daily. The cash strapped municipality cannot afford cable theft as well.

Binne die volgende maand gaan julle met soveel mense kuier dat die weer en politiek later nie meer interessant gaan wees nie. Dus stel ek aan julle die volgende uitdaging: Gaan lees die koerant,
kyk nuus of bespring die internet. Skerp jul gespreksonderwerpe op. En nee, om misdaad te bespreek is nie goed genoeg nie. Dit word immers die 'Fees'tyd genoem. By die meeste geleenthede gesels ons almal lekker. Maar ongelukkig kan ek nie verby almal se ongelooflike voorspelbaarheid en stereotipiese hantering van geykte onderwerpe kyk nie. Elke partytjie of braai dien as 'n barometer om die sentiment van die Afrikaner op te som. Oor hierdie tyd kry mens almal onder een dak. Jy kry die intellektueles, die verbitterdes, die liberales, die konserwatiewes, die grapgatte, die martelgatte die fanatici, die heidene, die godsdienstiges, die vuilbekke, die weet-allese, die dommes en dan die doodgewone mense wat net soms 'n woordjie probeer inkry. Alles in 'n roespot wat jou soms verbaas laat, soms jou mond laat oophang, jou laat snak na jou asem, jou kwaad maak en dan seker die belangrikste vir my, jou deel laat voel van 'n groep hardegatte wat nog nooit saam gestaan het nie, en seker nooit sal saamstaan nie, maar snaaks genoeg, altyd 'n manier vind om te oorleef as 'n groep, te groei as groep en soms vir 'n breukdeel van 'n sekonde saam te staan as 'n groep binne die groot geheel. Ons kon net sowel 'n paar honderd jaar gelede 'n groep trekkers rondom 'n kampvuur gewees het wat stry in watter rigting om te trek, selfde argumente vandag met nuwer byderwetse temas. Dis is my raad. Let wel op om van ander te skinder nie tel as 'n 'draai' in die gesprek nie. Dit sit jou net weer in die volgende gesprek as die een oor wie geskinder word. More het die weer verander en die politiek nuwe vlerke gekry, begrawe dit nou!

Church Unlimited (CU) in Nelspruit will once again host the Looking Up Youth Camp early in 2013. Last year's event was a great success with around 300 young people from all over the country from as far afield as Cape Town, Ficksburg and Joburg attending. This year's Camp promises to be even bigger and they are expecting around 500 youth. The camp will be held from 8 to 11 January 2013 before all the schools start for the new year. Several fun activities will be presented on and around the CU premises. Youth leaders from all over the country will speak at the camp while a special worship band will provide live music. “We hope to impart fresh vision to the young people so that they know that God has a unique purpose for their lives. This is an amazing opportunity for our local Lowveld youth to be part of this national initiative,” says Shaun Adams, local organiser of the Looking Up Youth Camp. Church Unlimited has a flourishing Youth ministry with several weekly activities and meetings at local schools. The Church also has a fully-equipped Youth centre where the High School Youth meet on Friday nights and Sundays. The cost for the Camp is R300 per person which includes tented accommodation, meals and activities. Children from Grade 8 -12 are welcome. OMEN and children often fall victim to crimes such as rape and murder. Elderly women and children under the age of 15 are the most vulnerable as they are defenceless. These victims depend entirely on adults and the police for protection. The 16 Day of Activism against Women and Children will place a spotlight on this again. Here are some more facts about the reasons behind this campaign: The Domestic Violence Act. The Domestic Violence Act, 1998 regulates the procedure to be followed in respect of domestic violence and affords legal remedies to the victim. What is a domestic relationship? A relationship between the complainant (victim) and the respondent (perpetrator) where they are or were married; live or have lived together in a relationship as husband and wife (same sex included) are the parents of a child or share parental responsibility for the child; are family members related by marriage, blood or adoption are or were engaged to each other, dating, in a relationship, including an actual or perceived romantic, intimate or sexual relationship of any duration\share or recently shared the same residence. What is domestic violence? Domestic violence includes: Physical abuse (slapping, biting, kicking, etc.). Emotional abuse (insults, name calling, humiliation, invasion of privacy, etc.). Sexual abuse (forcing a person to have sex against his/her will and sexual assault). Economic abuse (withholding money to which the victim is legally entitled to in an unreasonable manner, disposing of household goods in which you have an interest, without your permission, etc.). Stalking (repeatedly following or approaching him/her and demanding to talk to him/her). Damage to the victims' property (breaking furniture, deflating tyres, etc.). Unauthorised entry into the victim's residence (for example the residence of an ex-
girlfriend). Intimidation (written or verbal death threats which includes fear). Harassment (making repeated unwanted phone calls to the victim, repeatedly watching the victim, loitering at places where the victim is) Any other form of controlling behaviour towards the victim that endangers the safety or wellbeing of the victim. What are your options if you are a victim of Domestic violence? You have the right to lay a criminal charge, if the conduct of the perpetrator constitutes a criminal offence; apply for a protection order at your nearest magistrate's court. Lay a criminal charge AND apply for a protection order. Laying a criminal charge is NOT a requirement for applying for a protection order. What is a Protection Order? It is an order issued by the magistrate upon application of the victim, which COMPELS the perpetrator to act in a certain manner (pay the rent, etc.) PROHIBITS the perpetrator from committing certain conduct (not to assault the victim, etc.) A protection order aims to prevent the reoccurrence of the domestic violence incident and it seeks to ensure the safety of the
complainant, free from fear of pain and humiliation it may cause to the victim. As long as the respondent complies with the protection order, the complainant will be safe. If the respondent however contravenes any provision of the protection order, the respondent may be arrested. What to do if the perpetrator disobeys the protection order? Phone the police. An affidavit will be taken from you. Hand over the warrant of arrest to the police indicating that it was received with the protection order (if you do not have it, inform the police accordingly). If you are in danger of imminent harm as a result of the contravention, the perpetrator will be arrested. Have a crisis plan ready? Have access to a telephone / identify a place where you can phone quickly and easily. Always be in possession of emergency numbers. Give copies of the protection order and warrant of arrest to people you can trust and keep one with you. Keep money in a safe place should you need it for a bus or taxi in an emergency. Keep an extra set of keys for the house and car in a safe place. Have a set of clothes for as ID
yourself and your children packed in a bag, keep it in a safe place like a neighbour's house, etc. If you are planning to leave, leave when the perpetrator is not around, and take your children with you. Make sure that you are in possession of your essential documents such as ID books, medical aid cards, bank cards, etc. Commitment of the SAPS to victims of domestic violence: As police officials we will; Treat victims with respect and protect their dignity; To ensure that this has been done, we will ask victims to sign the Occurrence Book at the police station. RESEARCH shows damaged tyres are one of the main factors that contribute to accidents in SA. According to this research, damaged and badly maintained tyres are the most common among widespread factors that contribute to accidents in South Africa. Tyres are undoubtedly the most critical safety component on a vehicle as it affects traction, handling, steering, stability and braking. South Africa displays trends similar to those of developing countries. This implies that an increase in the number of vehicles on the road has contributed to an increase in the number of road traffic fatalities. As countless families across SA prepare to depart for their holiday destination, it is a worrying fact that many will do so without taking the time to check the health of their tyres. “Drivers often forget that only correctly inflated tyres can do their job properly, delivering the right level of handling performance. “Drivers frequently make one of three classical mistakes: either they don't check their tyre pressure before departure, or alternatively, they check the pressure when the tyre is warm, which results in incorrect readings, or they put it at a level that does not take into account the weight of the car - empty or fully loaded, it makes a difference,“ explains Bertie Strydom of Hi Q Lydenburg. Properly inflated tyres are necessary to keep the vehicle's handling performance at optimal levels, especially its cornering and braking abilities. Many problems start with a gradual and unnoticed loss of inflation pressure. “When a tyre is under-inflated, the car's weight is concentrated on the outside part of the tyre tread, increasing pressure on the tyre's sidewalls (the tyres' shoulders as we call them), rather than being spread out evenly across the width of the tyre. This means that as the tyre rolls, the sidewall heats up more than it should, and that affects both performance and safety. Under-inflation means less evenly distributed pressure on the road. It also reduces the tread area that is in direct contact with the road. These effects reduce the tyres' grip and especially in combination with a heavily loaded car, can have a significantly impact on the car's driving behaviour. Stopping distances become longer and cornering abilities can become sloppier and less direct, which can lead to uncontrollable driving behaviour. Our tyres are highly performing products, equipped with sophisticated technologies. To make use of their abilities to the full extent, the right tyre pressure must be applied”, says Strydom. Tyres may loose up to 0.2 bar air pressure in a three-month time period, solely as a result of the everyday diffusion processes in the tyre. “Too many drivers make the mistake of thinking that a kick to their tyres or a visual check will tell them if their tyre pressure is correct. A visual inspection cannot detect a 0.2 bar decrease in pressure. Studies carried out by the European Union have shown that more than 64% of all cars have under-inflated tyres. Most drivers simply don't check their tyre pressure often enough, which can have a significant effect on vehicle safety.” Apart from checking for under- or over-inflation, drivers should also make sure they don't set off on tyres that are in bad conditions. “Check your tyres' tread wear before you depart. Is it still of sufficient depth? This is particular important for the car's performance on wet roads. Is the tread worn evenly? Also check the tyre's sidewalls for any damages”, adds Bertie Strydom. Going on holiday usually means the entire family and a whole lot of luggage is piled into the car. Not only does a heavy load make the car more difficult to manoeuvre. A heavy load or towing a caravan or trailer puts extra strain on the vehicle and tyres. If the vehicle is fully loaded with passengers and luggage, the tyre pressure must be increased according to the car's manual. Summer heat increases air pressure in tyres. The tyre pressure should be checked when the tyres are 'cold', as pressure in the tyre increases at higher temperatures. Remember to check the spare tyre too. What do you do if you hit a pothole? Pothole damage is usually confined to tyres, rims, steering and suspension. If you hit a pothole and afterwards you notice a vibration, the steering wheel doesn't centre properly or it pulls to one side, get the car checked immediately, as faults such as tracking or steering damage can lead to later expense or even an accident. Also check your tyres as damage may not be immediately obvious. Watch for the development of bulges on the tyre sidewalls, indicating serious internal damage. In this case, change the tyre immediately. Be on your guard for potholes, but don't suddenly swerve to avoid them – it could be very dangerous, potentially causing you to loose control. Here are 13 important things to remember: 1 Check if anyone has been injured. If there are any injuries call an ambulance or the traffic department which will in-turn alert them. 2 Ensure that you and your passengers are out of harm’s way by vacating the vehicle and moving out of danger. 3 It's imperative to take down details of parties involved in the incident. You need names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses so you or your insurance company can contact them. Other important particulars include ID numbers, licence numbers (include the code on the licence), vehicle registration numbers and the make and models of other vehicles. 4 Note important information such as the time of the crash, location, number of passengers, weather conditions and road surface conditions.

The Mashishing Half Marathon will take place at Skhila, 2km outside Lydenburg (Burgersfort Road). It will consist of the following distances: 21.1km, 10km and a 5km fun run. Walkers are welcome. The marathon will start at 07:00 and the 5km at 07:30. The race will start and finish at Marifaan Primary School. Police and security will be available for the vehicles and the runners safety. WEEKENDS in Waterval Boven may be generally quiet and bowling is generally considered to be a quiet sport. This was definitely not the case recently when the Nomads bowlers came to town to 'do it all for charity' in a two day charity event hosted by the Waterval Boven Bowling Club. The Lydenburg Clubs, clubs from Nelspruit and White River attended. The Nomads are a group of sportsmen and woman who, indeed, live up to their name. In the case of lawn bowls, bowlers from many different clubs from many different towns across the Lowveld who are not only members of their own individual clubs, but are also members of the Nomads organisation, moving from event to event and competing against each other in a friendly rivalry to raise funds for worthy causes wherever they go. The Nomads identify various charitable causes and arrange competitions at clubs in the Lowveld. ”All proceeds go to the selected charity or welfare organisation,” said Mr S. Stassen, competition secretary. In the case of the Waterval Boven event, there were two local charities elected to benefit, the NG Kerk, Diens van Barmhartigheid, PPK (People with a Passion for Kids) which benefits many child-headed households, etc in nearby Emgwenya.
