- Electricity Scandal The High Court in Pretoria has granted Platinum Premises Investments an interdict to restrain Thaba Chweu from cutting off the electricity supply to their premises without due cause. The Thaba Chweu Municipality was also ordered to pay the cost of the application. The court further ordered the Thaba Chweu Municipality to immediately reconnect electricity supply where power was cut without the required notice. The order was granted on February 12. “If Thaba Chweu does not pay the High Court cost the Mpumalanga Province will be taken to the High Court for the costs, ” said Mr Eugene Gouws, the director of several development companies in Lydenburg. The cutting of electricity on Friday, February 7 at 16:00 was the final straw on the camel's back. Court interdict was the result of months of 'discrimination' said Mr Gouws. Mr Gouws said on Monday to the Highlands Panorama News that Mr Nkosi is aware that businesses can't operate when their power is cut on a Friday afternoon. He apparently did not give businesses a fair chance to show their receipts and to defend themselves. TCM was not interested in any proof of payment presented to them. According to court documents Thaba Chweu did not allocate payments on the different accounts of Platinum Premises Investments to the correct accounts, especially electronic transfer payments. “I want the public and businesses to know that we had success in taking on TCM. We need to stand together and make it known that we will not be bullied like this,” he concluded. DA thrashes ANC in Thaba Chweu by-election THE DA won another decisive by-election victory in Ward 12 Thaba Chweu, when they thrashed the ANC with a winning margin of over 87,6%, obtaining 541 votes over 76. The ward became vacant after Sonja Boshoff was nominated to represent Mpumalanga at the National Council of Provinces, and in the wake of an intensive campaign, led to the election of Nicko Janse van Vuuren to take the DA's work forward. Residents' overwhelming endorsement of the DA shows that the DA is increasingly becoming the party of choice for South Africans to provide their service delivery needs, secure in the knowledge that a vote for the DA is a vote for a better life. “The DA extends its most sincere thanks to each and every voter who came out to cast their votes today, and we are humbled by the confidence that residents hold in our abilities to hold the Thaba Chweu municipality to account” said DA MPU leader Anthony Benadie. “We are confident that Nicko and his DA colleagues in the local council will continue to serve the needs of Ward 12 residents, along with those of the greater Thaba Chweu area”.

This follows after readers reached out to the centre after an article in the Highlands Panorama News in February. Ses vas, te laat vir vis Netvangsste is al lankal ’n probleem by die Kwêndam op die Badfonteinpad buite Lydenburg. In die vroeë oggendure van Dinsdag 25 Februarie het Col. Heymans, mnr. Andries Bezuidenhout en MTPA Natuurbewaarder mnr. Themba Mkhabela ’n boot met agt hengelaars ingewag toe hulle aan wal wou kom. Hulle is dopgehou omdat hulle met nette Bloukurpers gevang het. Ses verdagtes is gearresteer en twee het weggehardloop. Hulle is na die Lydenburg SAPS geneem na die arrestasie en word met Phalaborwa verbind. Netvangsste is heeltemal onwettig. “Die MTPA Lydenburg Visserye was in Janaurie ook by Kwênadam en het ’n ondersoek gelas. Navorsing is gedoen oor die getalle van Bloukurpers. Baie min visse is genet en dit wys dat daar ’n daling is in die getal Bloukurpers. Bloukurpers is ’n baie gewilde hengelvis,” het mnr. Frik Rousseau, hoof van die Lydenburg Visserye gesê. 60 % van die Bloukurpers was oor 1kg gewees. Dis groot volwasse visse. Dis verskriklik negatief op die visbevolking. Hengelaars word vir ’n rede met ’n lisensie toegerus dat hulle beperk word op die hoeveelheid visse wat hulle mag vang. ust after 08:00 on Tuesday morning radio presenter Rian van Heerden from Jacarada FM announced on air that the Mayor of Thaba Chweu will be joining him for an interview. Lydenburg was one of the chosen destinations for the Love Tour by this station. He comically said that the team drove through 15 pot holes in the short distance from their guest house to the Long SuperSPAR parking lot where the special broadcast was taking place. A number of Lydenburg residents and schools came out to show support for the Love Tour and to greet the Jacaranda team with the hospitality that Lydenburg is known for. The Thaba Chweu Mayor Cllr Bafana Michael Ncongwane had to think fast when Rian peppered him with questions about the state of the roads around Lydenburg. The Mayor was quick to respond and gave fair answers seeing that everything that goes wrong in Thaba Chweu “cannot be placed solely on his shoulders”. Rian: When will the roads be finished around Lydenburg: Mayor: I don't want to say that. I don't want to tell lies. We need to fix the road, fix the patchwork, then it rains and it starts all over again. The whole route has to be rehabilitated. Rian: Will it be fixed sometime this year? Mayor: I can't comment because a lot of structures needs to be in place but we hope so. Rian: When we come back will we hit a pot hole again? M a y o r : We a r e waiting for the intervention. I don't want to say yes or no. I will say maybe. I don't want to commit myself. That was only part of the interview. Die Potchefstroom Universiteit is my Almamater. Ek was daar vir vier jaar en het my honneursgraad in kommunikasiekunde voltooi. Ek het met groot belangstelling Beeld se berigte gevolg oor ongeruimdhede tydens die ongroening. En toe Saterdag lees ek ’n brief van ’n oudstudent wat in my koshuis was, Wag-’n-Bietjie. Met ons vingers gepunt in saluut. En daar vertel my ma toe dat hulle as eerstejaars by die Potchefstroom Onderwys Kollege ook ‘Heil die Republiek’ geskree het. Republiek Huis was haar koshuis. En dat niemand snaaks daarvan gedink het nie. Gegewe dat dit baie nader aan die Tweede Wêreldoorlog was. Boonop was Nazionheil nog baie meer vars in almal se geheue. Dis net snaaks vir my dat dit so ’n bohaai oor niks is nie. En dit in ’n nasionale koerant. Komende van iemand wat self vir ’n koerant werk. Natuurlik is daar seker hard gewerk met die eerstejaar bloedjies se galle en hul arme ouers kon nie die onreg hanteer nie. Maar ek kan julle een ding sê... ek sou nie die mens gewees het wat ek vandag was as dit nie vir ongroening en koshuislewe was nie. Net so sal baie sê, weermagopleiding kan terugkom. Dit maak ’n muis ’n man. Die ergste wat gebeur het was dat ons oor Over-De-Voor, berugte koshuis op die Pukke, se gras gehardloop het. Die mans het ons summier gevang en in die storte gegooi. Dit was vrywillig maar wie wil nou uitsit as jou lewe bietjie meer opwindend kan wees. Heil... ja heil Potch, ek sal die universiteit salueer. Dit het niks met Hitler te doen nie.

Julle het julle kinders, julle familie en julle vriende gefaal. Julle gebrekkige opvoeding het daartoe gelei dat hierdie seuns sonder dissipline arrogant groot geraak het. En die skade is gedoen. Daar is geen omdraai nie. Dink iemand regtig hierdie mense sal ooit ’n aanwins vir die samelewing wees? Nee, sies man!

THE power system is severely constrained due to the loss of additional generating units from their power station fleet, reduced imports and the extensive use of emergency reserves. This has necessitated the need for Eskom to declare an emergency in terms of the approved regulatory protocols, as a measure to protect the national electricity grid. Eskom is now following the protocol in terms of its emergency procedures in order to secure the power system. They have alerted their key industrial customers and have required them to reduce their load by a minimum of 10% for the time being. The situation will be closely monitored to determine a way forward. While they will make every effort to avoid load shedding, they are hopeful that by applying these measures, coupled with support from all electricity consumers, they will achieve the required load reduction necessary to protect the national grid. Eskom calls on all its commercial customers, particularly shopping centres and retail outlets to switch off geysers and to adjust airconditioning temperature levels to 23°C. As workers leave office buildings they are asked to please switch off lights with the exception of the security lighting, and avoid leaving on airconditioning overnight. Residential consumers are called on to switch off geysers, air conditioners, lights and non-essential appliances from 5pm to 9pm in the evenings. As a precautionary measure Eskom's load shedding schedules are available for Eskom direct customers on their website (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za/). Customers can also contact our call centre 0860 037 566 for additional information. Load shedding schedules will only be utilised for the duration of the constraint and Eskom will provide regular updates on the status of the power system. Dié gewilde Afrikaanse sanger veroorsaak groot opskudding in die musiekbedryf. Van 'n klein begin in Hatfield, Pretoria tot 'n Guiness Wêreldrekord, sing Adam Afrikaans met sy “Rock” ondertoon menigte se harte warm. Nes enige nuwe musikant het Adam alleen in Hatfield se kuierplekke opgetree en so sy stempel onder veral die studente afgedruk. Adam het nie net ’n warm stem nie, maar ook ’n talentvolle skrywershand. Die liedjies op sy albums is oorspronklike treffers wat hy self geskryf het. Platinum sector strike continues FIVE weeks of strikes in the platinum sector have not diminished the commitment of workers to go without pay until they receive a living wage, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) said on Thursday.

Amcu has rejected an ultimatum from platinum producers to accept a wage offer already "pushing the boundaries of affordability". This offers little hope to end industrial action that raised concerns about the future viability of the platinum sector and possible job losses. Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa said the employers’ demand that the union accept a three-year wage deal of between 7.5% and 9% is "disappointing". He added that the producers were attempting to create an impression that only they were bargaining in good faith to "gain the moral high ground". Amcu would continue with the strike until the platinum companies agreed to a settlement that "accommodates our R12,500 demand", Mr Mathunjwa said.
Since the strike started Lonmin has reported attendance figures of about 1% while Implats sent its nonstriking workers home. Amcu has rejected that its members have been violent, but has said it could not respect picketing rules it had not been consulted on. The union has maintained that violence was not in the union’s interest, maintaining that those arrested during violent protests were often not mineworkers but just people wearing Amcu regalia.
The world’s three largest platinum producers — Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), Lonmin and Impala Platinum (Implats) — this week threatened to walk out of wage talks the Commission of Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) was facilitating. The companies said it was now up to Amcu to display a willingness to negotiate for a lower increase or they would walk out of the CCMA process. They said there would be no revision of their offer. A walkout from the wage talks would set the stage for a prolonged stand-off in the platinum sector with the focus shifting to picketing rules and related strike violence.
Mr Mathunjwa on Thursday dismissed the company’s warnings of job losses in the sector, saying "mining companies have been restructuring and dismissing workers long before Amcu demanded R12,500". Mines this week warned that customers of platinum group metals, who rely on consistent supply, could begin looking for alternatives. This raised further questions of long-term sustainability in a sector where 45% of operations failed to break even. Mr Mathunjwa said Amcu members were willing to strike, even to their own detriment. This was because they were no longer willing to tolerate apartheid-era practices of exploitation and lack of transformation.
The CCMA on Thursday met Amcu members to receive feedback on the union’s consultations with them. Afterwards the commission said its mediating efforts were "continuing", but declined to comment further. The CCMA has said Amplats’ legal action against Amcu should not interfere with the negotiation process. But independent labour analyst Tony Healy said the decision to seek damages for intimidation was highly unusual from an Amplats CEO Chris Griffith said his company could move to have the strike’s protected status overturned because of ongoing violence and intimidation at employer. This showed that Amplats did not believe there was a prospect of its mines. HIERDIE week kyk ons na ’n meer bekostigbare gehalte motor. Daar is twee VW Polo reekse, nl. die intree Polo Vivo reeks en die (nuwer en beter) Polo reeks. Laasgenoemde bestaan uit 1.4 Trendline, 1.4 Comfortline (ons toetsmotor), 1.2 TDI BlueMotion, 1.6 Trendline. 1.6 Comfortline, 1.6 Comfortline Tiptronic en 1.6 TDI Comfortline. Ons toetsmotor was toegerus met die opsionele radio / CD met iPod en USB in, wat goed geklink het. Vanaf R 172 000 (heelwat meer met al die klokkies) is hierdie nie ’n goedkoop motor nie, maar die gehalte is baie duidelik. Die motor voel solied met geen ratels en kreune nie, selfs op ons slegte paaie. Die 1.4 liter enjin maak 63 kW en 132 Nm, wat nie aardskuddend is nie, maar dit versnel en beweeg goed vir ’n 1.4. Teen 120 km/u in vyfde draai die enjin teen slegs 3 200 omwentelinge, 3 800 teen 140 en net 4 200 teen 160. Selfs teen 160 km/u is die motor stabiel en rotsvas op die pad. Remme is goed en ander kontroles werk lig en maklik. Alle skakelaars voel van baie beter gehalte as enige kompetisie. Die stuurwiel het kraghulp, kontroles vir die radio, is leerbedek en kan in-en-uit en op-en-af verstel. Daar is ABS remme met EBD, HHC en ESP, 15 duim allooiwiele, ses lugsakke, ISOFIX kinderstoel montering, elektriese ruite en spieëls, lugversorging (baie effektief), ritrekenaar, afstandbeheerde sluit met alarm, gemaklike sitplekke met ’n leeropsie, voubare sentrale armrus en konsole voor, verkoelde paneelkissie, togbeheer opsie, en misligte voor en agter. Op die pad, ry die Polo baie lekker. Ek is seker dit sal goed toer. Krag is voldoende in die klas en brandstofverbruik behoort baie goed te wees. Beenruimte agter is soos alle luikrug motors in dié klas effe knap, maar die bagasiebak is redelik ruim. Die enjin is maklik toeganklik, maar vir dié wat die motor lank wil hou en later self wil diens, sit die oliefilter so dat dit redelik morsig sal wees om oliefilters te ruil. Ek het gehou van: Kwaliteit gevoel van alle kontroles, hantering, soliede bakwerk gevoel en konserwatiewe stilering. Dié motor sal nie gou verouder nie en sal sy herverkoopwaarde goed hou. Ek het nie gehou van die feit dat daar nie ’n enjintemperatuurmeter is nie (daar is wel liggies) en die toeter klink soos die van ’n “scooter”. Algeheel dink ek dit is ’n uitstekende, gehaltemotor, hoewel dit met al die opsies op nie goedkoop is nie. Gaan kyk daarna by VW Highlands Lydenburg. Andre Coetzee.

VOLKSWAGEN is starting 2014 with the market introduction of one of the sportiest compact models in South Africa, the new Golf R. Since February 2013, Volkswagen has launched seven new Golf derivatives including Golf GTI. The new Golf R is powered by a newly designed 206 kW engine, which is 18 kW more powerful but up to 18 per cent more fuel efficient than the sixth generation Golf R. Like all previous Golf R models, the new model also transfers its turbocharged engine power to the road via a permanent all-wheel drive system. In this case, it is the latest version of the 4MOTION system with a fifth-generation Haldex coupling. Delivering pure dynamic performance are a newly configured sport suspension system (body height lowered by 20 mm), the new progressive steering system and "ESC Sport". Optional features include Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system with the driving profile selector that features a new Race mode. The Golf R with a manual gearbox (only available in the second half of 2014) reaches 100 km/h after just 5.2 seconds (previous model: 5.7 seconds). The classic sprint is completed in 5.0 seconds with dual
clutch gearbox (DSG). The car's top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Despite the car's exceptionally agile driving performance and 18 kW more power, fuel consumption of the new Golf R is down from 8.5 to 6.9 l/100 km compared to that of the previous model. CO2 emissions were also improved from 199 to 159 g/km. The new Golf R is equipped with BlueMotion Technology that offers Stop-Start system and battery regeneration. The new Golf R is equipped with an extensive package of customised and exclusive features. Along with specially designed bumpers, side sills and 19-inch Cadiz alloy wheels, the Golf R can also be visually distinguished by details such as standard bi-xenon headlights with newly designed LED daytime running lights (in dual-U design), dark red LED rear lights and twobranch exhaust system with four chrome tailpipes. The purpose of the application is to obtain a License to operate and keep limited payout machines on the site premises in the Province of Limpopo.
