Thaba Chweu is millions in debt, war says Eskom ESKOM has moved to notify all parties who are likely to be materially and adversely affected as the company contemplates interrupting bulk electricity supply to the top 20 defaulting municipalities around the country with effect from 5 June 2015. As at 31 March the total municipal arrear debt greater than 30 days was R4.6 billion. Of this amount, the top 20 defaulting municipalities are currently indebted to Eskom to the amount of R 3.68 billion for the bulk supply of electricity. The interim Chief Executive of Eskom, Mr Zethembe Khoza, said: Non payment for electricity undermines Eskom's statutory obligation to generate and supply electricity to municipalities nationally on a finically sustainable basis. We have therefore decided to exercise our right according to the provisions of the Electricity
Regulation Act 4 of 2006 and the supply of electricity to defaulting municipalities.” Eskom recognises that the disconnection of electricity supply may cause undue hardship to consumers and members of the community and may adversely affect the delivery of other services, however, customer disconnection is always the last resort explored. In view of this Eskom is contemplating a regulated interruption of electricity as indicated below: Monday to Friday 06:00 - 10:00 and 17:00 - 21:00; Saturday and Sunday 07:00 – 17:00 and 17:00 - 20:00. Consumers within the jurisdiction of defaulting municipalities will be given adequate notice in terms of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act, no3 of 2000 and will be given the opportunity to make written representations to Eskom.
Eskom plans to interrupt bulk electricity supply to the top 20 defaulting municipalities across the country, with effect from June. This represented about 3.8 million people, or 7% of the population, Bloomberg reported. As at March 31 2015, the total municipal arrears debt greater than 30 days was R4.6bn, Eskom said in a statement. Of this amount, the top 20 defaulting municipalities are currently indebted to Eskom to the amount of R3.68bn for the bulk supply of electricity. Municipal leaders have accused government of using municipality money earmarked for delivering services to the poor, to instead solve Eskom's woes. They are threatening to go to court after National Treasury froze the funds of 56 municipalities for owing R12.6bn for services, according to City Press. ORGANISED business in the Ehlanzeni District got a shot in the arm on Tuesday 24th March 2015 at a joint meeting of representatives of a wide spectrum of organised business and tourism from across the district. The meeting was hosted by the KLCBT at the PWC offices in Nelspruit, and James Aling facilitated the discussions. The business Chambers represented included; AHI, FABCOS, NAFCOC, and SACCI. In addition the local level chambers and tourism organisations from the following towns were represented; Barberton; Bushbuckridge; Graskop; Hazyview; KLCBT; Kruger Park South; Lydenburg; Malelane, Mbombela; Pilgrims Rest; Sabie; Sabie Sands. Over the last few months it has become clear that the time is ripe for a joint initiative between the different arms of organised business in the region. The intention is to strengthen links between the different business organisations, and to create a platform to give a clear mandate to business role players engaging with government representatives and to share best practise and experiences. It is recognised that in Ehlanzeni, tourism is big business, and in
fact a significant contributor to job creation and poverty alleviation. Tourism has made significant progress in building robust regional structures and systems that could be adopted by all business sectors. The meeting recognised that there is a dire need for a more formal and unified platform for engagements between government and business to be successful. In addition, it is important to get the right people from business and government working in a collaborative manner engaging on issues and solutions. There are specialist skills available in both the private and public sectors and this initiative hopes to pull in the best available skills to make input and to engage with government as required. The KLCBT President Dr Norah Fakude addressed the meeting after the lunch break, 'There is power in unity' she said as she emphasised the reality of our interdependence between the private and public sectors. In wrapping up, general consensus was that a collective initiative is needed particularly in order to get closer to government and share best practise. The objective is to engage constructively and collaboratively with Government to address the challenges and opportunities we face to be able create jobs, eradicate poverty and inequality. The meeting agreed to establish a task team to take the matter forward. With representatives from each of the chambers present at the meeting and covering a wide cross section of business communities across the province, the team is tasked to develop a simple MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) for participating organisations to adopt in order to guide the future activities of the alliance. Once the MOU has been agreed to and signed off by the participating parties, a formal engagement process will commence with Government at both a Provincial and District level. Future activities are expected to include quarterly think tanks, and possibly a newsletter. In addition the intention is to develop an initiative to improve the support of local businesses generally with a particular view to developing the economy of the region. The primary objective however will be the establishment of a unified voice to deal with government.

So twee of drie verkiesings gelede het ons president gesê dat mense wat vir die opposisie stem vir die “hel” stem. Met ander woorde die ANC is dus hemel(s). Wel, ons bly op die Weltevreden pad wat die helle van die vorige regering ge-oormerk het om 'n teerpad te word. Die pad is heluit korter Nelspruit toe. Die brue is blykbaar klaar gebou en die geld was daar vir die nuwe regering om voort te gaan, maar die klomp helsems het net daar gestop en die geld het weggeraak. Weereens was geld voorsien maar die helse pad is nie voltooi nie. Hierdie pad het helse slaggate en moerse klippe wat bo die grond uitstaan. Die waterpype wat ongeveer 1 tot 2 meter onder die padoppervlakte was is nou al besig om opgehel te word aangesien die persone wat die pad instand moet hou net die grond wegskraap en sodoende die pad meer ophel. Hulle het nie 'n helse idee van padskraap nie of gee nie 'n hel om nie en hel net voort. Ons voertuie se bande, skokbrekers, onderstelle en alles word opgehel. Die nommerplate en ligte hel ook af. Die flikkerligte ens se gloeilampies word opgehel en die boetes is hels hoog, en die verkeersbeamptes kan nie 'n hel verstaan dat die draadjies opgehel is as gevolg van die
helse slegte pad nie. So 'n jaar gelede was ek by die slagpale en toe stop daar 'n bakkie met vier varke op en die een beer sê: “Hemel, maar ons is gelukkig.” Waaop een van die jonger varkies vra: “wat bedoel oom met ons is gelukkig?” Die antwoord: “Ons is gelukkig dat ons lewendig by die slagpale aangekom het en die voertuig nie omgehel het nie”. Ek hou meer van die Engelse woord “potholes” as slaggate. Dis meer beskrywend in Engels. “pothole” is wat dit sê. “n Gat soos in “toiletgat”, of “longdrop” of “toiletpot”. “Pothole” is dus ook meer “trots Hels Suid Afrika.” (ANC)

ie ironie is dat ek vir ’n koerant werk. En moet jaag om stories klaar te kry. Die leser moet vandag weet dat ek hierdie rubriek binne ’n paar minute van spertyd af geskryf het. Met permissie natuurlik. So daarom is ek net eenvoudig altyd te haastig. Iemand het in die week vir my gesê: “Raak rustig!” Ek herhaal dit nou heeltyd in die stilte. Maar my musiek is partykeer so hard in die motor dat ek dit nie dan hoor nie. En dis wanneer ek begin jaag. Sies! Om te wag is nie hoog op my prioriteitslys nie. Stadige bestuurders ook nie. Betyds en laat is nie ’n grensgeval van vyf minute nie. Vyf minute later as op tyd, maak jou laat. Ons sing graag saam met Lukas Maree "die tyd gaan so gou verby, die tyd gaan so bitter gou verby." Michael Althusuler het ’n oplossing om tyd-weghol te keer: "Die slegte nuus is dat tyd vlieg. Die goeie nuus, jy's die vlieënier." Seker ómdat jy jou eie tyd mág bestuur, kan dit my so die herrie in maak dat ander mense die leisels uit jou hande neem. Het julle al opgelet dat mense wat gereeld laat is, baie meer plesierige Afrikaners is? Dalk is daar ’n les te leer. Hoe dit ookal sy, Arnold Bennette het seker die waarste gedagtes: "Die tyd is die onverklaarbare grondstof van alles. 'n Baie geliefde en bekende inwoner van Lydenburg, mnr. Gerhard Potgieter is op Saterdag 4 April na 'n lang siekbed oorlede. Hy is Vrydag 10 April uit die Gereformeerde Kerk Lydenburg begrawe. Mnr. Gerhard Potgieter het lank gedien op die kommittee van die Enkeldoorn Boerevereniging as voorsitter. Hy het ook die kranslegging ingestel vir die helde van die Tweede Wêreld oorlog en die Grensoorlog wat jaarliks op 10 Oktober herdenk word. Hy was sedert 1969 in Lydenburg en was betrokke by die gemeenskap. Hy was ook oud Ouderling by die Gereformeerde Kerk Lydenburg. Hy was 'n vegter vir die Afrikaanse taal en die korrekte gebruik daarvan en baie van die mense sal onthou hoe hy vlot Sepedi magtig was. In 'n huldeblyk aan hom het sy dogter Marietjie geskryf: “Mense sê hy was vas aan sy beginsels. Mense sê hy was 'n man van integriteit. Mense sê hy was lief vir sy volk en vir sy God. Natuurlik was hy dit alles. Maar vandag onthou ek my pa vir wie hy vir ons was, vir my ma Callie, vir my sus Miem en broers Fanus en Kobus. Groothartig het hy mense langs die pad opgelaai, ingenooi in ons huis in. Hy het help trek, gehelp met skuld, gehelp met begrafnisse en met huis opsit.” ’n Mooi gebaar is dat wyle mnr. MONUMENTE word deur die geskiedenis in elke land in die wêreld opgerig om mense of geskiedkundige gebeure te gedenk. Dit gebeur in Afrika, in Rusland, in Argentinië, in die VSA, in die VK en oral. In Suid Afrika vertel ons monumente die storie van die land. Daar is monumente vir Van Riebeeck, Shaka, Rhodes, Mandela en elke ding. Dit is reg so. As jy nie van Paul Kruger hou nie, kan jy na Mandela gaan kyk.
Dit is soos dit in ’n vrye demokrasie werk. Nou kom ’n spul idiote en breek die kolonialis Cecil John Rhodes se standbeeld af. Die imbesiele weet nie eers dat dit sy nalatenskap is wat die universiteit gevestig het en wat baie van hulle se studiegeld betaal nie. Hulle weet nie dat Afrikaners niks van Rhodes die liberalis gehou het nie. Maar ons het sy standbeeld uitgelos, want op sy manier het hy ’n rol in die geskiedenis gespeel. Ons respekteer dit. En die EFF spring rond en breek lekker saam af. Dis soos hulle is.

Dit is die plig van skole, universiteite en die departement wat daarmee belas is om jong mense van ons kultuurerfenis te vertel. Kweek van kleins af respek vir die goed. Miskien sal hulle ophou breek, of leef ek in ’n droomwêreld? Seker.

THE World Endurance championship, whose annual highlight is the Le Mans 24 Hours sports- car classic, is to delete the “grid girls” from the grid. In a move that will be applauded by many, and is sure to dismay those accustomed to seeing scantily-clad beauties posing next to cars before a race, the International Automobile Federation-backed series is adopting a more progressive stance. Wheels24 wonders if anybody thought the ask the girls themselves, mostly models probably who enjoy the extra exposure for future bookings. Whatever, the championship's chief executive Gerard Neveu, after a presentation for the opening Silverstone six-hour race, said: "From Silverstone on Sunday (April 12) you will see that for any race we will not have grid girls. For me that is the past. The condition of women is a little bit different now.” The use of models, also referred to as “race queens” or “umbrella girls”, to stand by cars with a flags or placard displaying drivers' numbers has long been a feature of Formula 1. It has also been a bone of contention for those seeking more equality and less sexism in a male-dominated sport, although in some series where women racers have joined the grid the 'umbrella' role has been taken by a man. Toyota's champion Anthony Davidson, a Briton who has also raced in Formula 1, said that it was about time things changed. "I talk about this with my wife quite a lot and we agree it's actually pretty backward. It's old school to have such a concept as grid girls. "I think that's a really nice touch, a modern touch as well, from the WEC to take that aspect of racing away. It is a bit sexist." Neveu said the cars would line up diagonally opposite the pits wall and grandstand as if for an old-style 'Le Mans start'. In Le Mans of old, before safety concerns stopped the practice, drivers would run across the track to the cars but at Silverstone there will be a rolling start. Neveu said the changes were all part of catering for a new audience. "The sport is sport but around it we can do many things," he said. "We will have a DJ, entertainment, many things on the grid. Opel is also planning to introduce matrix LED headlights, as already used in some luxury marques, that can “curve” around other vehicles, ie. that don’t blind other road users while still brightly illuminating the rest of the road. Star Motoring / iol.motoring.co.za OPEL is developing a new type of headlight that tracks the movement of your eyes and then shines in the direction you are looking at. The high-tech feature will form part of Opel’s adaptive headlights in the near future and will probably be extended across the General Motors family eventually. The system employs a camera to read the driver’s face more than 50 times a second, detecting the movements of the eyes and nose to determine the driver’s line of sight. The system translates this information into data commands for electronically-controlled actuators that align the vehicle’s headlights. The tricky part was dealing with the fact that a driver’s eyes tend to constantly jump from one focal point to another during normal driving, meaning that the headlights would move erratically if they followed the driver’s eye movements exactly. Opel’s engineers solved this by using a delay algorithm to ensure a natural movement for the light path. The headlights will automatically point in the direction of the vehicle if the driver takes their eyes off the road. Opel has yet to confirm when these eye-tracking headlights will be launched, but the German firm already has some clever technology in its third-generation adaptive headlight system available now. Called AFL+, these “intelligent” headlamps include a cornering function and can adjust their direction and intensity depending on the road
PORSCHE South Africa has launched two special versions of its popular fourdoor sedan - Panamera Edition and Panamera 4 Edition. The special editions are equipped with enhanced design elements throughout as well as technical and mechanical improvements. Each is powered by a 228kW V6 though the Panamera 4 Edition has all-wheel drive and traction management. The exterior has gloss-black trim on the windows and door releases (if Porsche Entry & Drive is chosen as an option) in the same colour. Its standard 19" alloy rims (in Panamera Turbo II design) have hub-covers with a coloured Porsche crest. Inside, the Panamera Edition gains dual-tone, black leather upholstery with the Porsche logo embossed on head rests, sport steering wheel, door sill plates with "Edition" lettering and special floor mats. The standard Porsche communication management system, with 17cm touchscreen, combines audio, satnav and communication features. Sound is provided by a 14-speaker 585 watt Bose surround-sound system. THE second-generation Jaguar XF sedan joins the recently launched XE saloon and beats the upcoming F-Pace SUV to market. It’ll go on sale in the UK late in 2015, and makes its public debut at the New York motor show. The exterior’s a collection of various JLR design cues – a touch of XE here, a bit of original XF there, and even a hint of F-Type in the rear light graphics. Design director Ian Callum says his team avoided the temptation of adding extra surface lines (a veiled dig at certain German brands, perhaps?) and worked hard to keep the XF’s body surfaces as clean as possible.
But what’s actually new on this XF? Compared with the outgoing XF, you’re looking at a car that’s built around Jaguar’s latest modular aluminium architecture. According to Jag, a full 75 per cent of the structure is aluminium, helping it weigh 190kg less than its predecessor and benefit from a 28 per cent increase in torsional rigidity. It shares its platform, which is essentially a longer variation of that of the XE saloon. Under the bonnet there’s a good spread of engines, from frugal diesels to a brawny supercharged V6 petrol power. There is Jaguar’s latest 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel unit – the same engine’s available with two outputs: 120kW for CO2conscious business (104g/km of CO2 with the manual), or 132kW for those who like an engine to work harder. Both outputs get a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or eight-speed auto. All the other engines are eight-speed auto-only, and aren’t lacking in the performance department. There’s a 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel with 220kW and an enormous 700Nm of torque, and the same 3.0-litre supercharged petrol V6 also found in the F-Type, with 280kW and 450Nm on tap. The XF will be available with rear-wheel and four-wheeldrive, too. HONDA literally stole the limelight at the New York International Auto Show with its luminous lime-coloured ultra-sporty and virtually production ready Civic Concept – a final precursor to the imminent launch of the tenth-generation Civic in the US. The concept, according to Honda, provides a “tantalising glimpse” of the design direction for the 10th-generation Civic that will be launched in the States in September. Design-wise it looks more mature than the current model. If this stunner is as close to the production Civic as we believe it to be, it will be a sure-fire winner for Honda; rekindling the halcyon days of the fourth-generation original DOHC VTEC-models. Described by Honda executives in the US as “epic”, the new Civic will have a sharper focus on performance and versatility. A sedan, coupé, hatchback and Si model, as well as the Type R performance flagship, will be included in the line-up, plus it will be the first US model with Earth Dreams Technology VTEC turbo engines. According to Honda the new Civic will feature a longer wheelbase and lower, wider stance to emphasise its “aggressive personality and the engaging experience it will provide behind the wheel”. In comparison to the current Civic it will have a proportionally longer hood, shorter front overhang, a more set-back cabin and a shorter rear, as well as bigger wheels and pronounced wheel arches. The Japanese automaker claims the new Civic will be the most dynamic, most technologically advanced and most refined and stylish derivative ever built. It is based on a new compact platform and its drivetrain options will include a new 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo engine with direct injection, mated to either a short-shifting 6-speed manual transmission or a new, more sporty and efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT). Honda is also targeting class-leading levels of safety performance with the Civic by offering the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assisted technologies, including lane departure warning; forward collision warning; a multi-angle rearview camera; adaptive cruise control and Honda LaneWatch. The North American versions of the Civic sedan, coupé and Si models will be built in the US while the five-door hatchback will be produced at the Swindon plant in the UK – which means it will almost certainly be made available in South Africa, probably by early 2016. Honda Civics of the past however always suffered from a lack of torque, boasting small, high revving engines that were not worth much in high altitude conditions. If however, their new turbo engines with direct injection make similar power as the Ford, Opel and VW units with this technology, coupled to a 6-speed manual box, the Honda would do very well. Modikwa Athletes at Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon
The Modikwa Marathon Club had 5 runners that competed in the Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra marathon in Cape town over the Easter weekend, run over 56km. This race is one of the most beautiful races in South Africa and winds along the coastal roads in the mother city, even though the route changed a bit this year due to the devastating veld fires just a few weeks ago. The route went over Ou Kaapse weg instead of the traditional Chapman’s peak road with its nd views of the ocean. Jeffrey Nkuna was the top athlete in the team finishing with a time of 04:26 hours in the 392 position, this is remarkable as 11 thousand athletes started the race. Race day was a real challenge with almost all four seasons in one day. The morning started off on the cool side, then the wind started blowing and even some rain showers to keep the runners cool, and after the rain the sun came out and it heated up substantially. The other athletes in the team were, Sonia Makuoa (04:57), Justice Phokane (05:05), Herman Mogale (05:30) and Lawrence Raphiri (06:33). The runners were very happy to have all completed the race, as it was a first Two Oceans for some of the runners. The team would like to thank the Modikwa Mine and Khulong Mining Supplies for the support to attend this great race. Well done to the team with the great effort !
