My tante Alwien Koeleman, het gesê “My hart is by die blou berge, Lydenburg se blou berge.” Oud-Lydenburgers sal haar goed onthou.
Mashishing traditionally means place of the long grass, For the past few hundred years this must have been the same sight everyone enjoyed. This is still a favourite area to visit for tourists, but the residents know that this is a special place. In 1850 the Voortrekkers started the town Lydenburg on the farm of Mr Johannes Coetser. He was also known as Kalesjhaan (the man with the wagon) and a well loved character in the area. The town has grown from strength to strength since then. (Michelle Boshoff)

Every street in town is a pothole trap ON 20 March an angry resident wrote a letter to the Municipal Manager about her daughter who injured herself when her motorbike slipped on loose grave at an intersection in town. The Highlands Panorama News received a copy of said letter from Mr. Gravett Herbst. It follows that TCM must not tell us that trucks are responsible for this terrible state of affairs. More than 90% of our streets almost never see a truck drive on them, yet the total lack of maintenance and / or concern is there for everyone to see. Go and look at the intersections of Goodman and Preller Streets, or Ruiter and Morgan Streets and show me that this was caused by mine trucks. No way. Yet these intersections have been like this for more than two years. It is the same principle with loose live electrical cables lying around. There seems to be a total lack of concern on the side of TCM about the safety of its residents. These roads will lead to deaths and class action should be taken against Municipal Officials in their personal capacity, as TCM is perpetually bankrupt. The time has come for TCM to employ a working crew to at least clean our streets of rubble and stones lying around. It does not matter if these stones fall from trucks. Workers should clean up constantly. Our roads have become the biggest hindrance to tourism, visitors and investors wanting to invest in our town. No matter from, which side you enter Lydenburg, the scene is akin to the destruction one sees in Syria. It is clear that TCM not only lacks any concern for human life, but that they have no concept of shame for their lack of performance. It is time for residents to act. ED: I also ride a motorcycle and can confirm that the streets and crossings in town are so littered with loose stones that riding a bike in Lydenburg is like gambling with death. There is not a single street in Lydenburg without potholes and without loose and slippery stones on the road surface.

Water security is critical in SA South Africa's water resources required smarter management if the water-stressed country was to ensure long-term water security and avoid a ripple-effect knock to its economy. Plus Economics simulated limited water availability scenarios which revealed that a lack of water could lead to the loss of 200 000 jobs in the water industry and result in a 1.2% decline in gross domestic product. A decrease in available water supply, the firm found, would also have a “ripple effect” on other industries, leading to reduced production and job losses. For every one job lost in the water sector, over two jobs would be shed within other industries. South Africa was considered the thirtieth-driest country in the world, suffering from low levels of rainfall, with high variability and high levels of evaporation owing to its hot climate. Twothirds of South Africa is semi-arid with an average rainfall of 420 mm – less than half the global average. Further, the United Nations 'World Water Development Report 2012' ranked South Africa 148 out of 180 countries for water availability per capita. The Water Resources Group estimated that, based on growth projections and current efficiency levels, a water
supply/demand gap of 17% would emerge by 2030, as demand for the scarce commodity continued to rise. Unresolved water security, water quality and associated water management challenges could restrict South Africa's socioeconomic growth. Prior to the recession – between 2002 and 2008 – the sector attracted significant investments towards water infrastructure development. An increase in water demand of R1-million would increase total output within the economy by over R2.3-million. The improvement in the productivity and liveability indexes would boost growth and development by 5%. Further, for every one job created in the water sector, another five would be created in other industries. There was “clear scope” to create more jobs in the water sector without placing pressure on the industry. South Africa had already revealed and acknowledged the core challenges to the surety of safe and sufficient water supply, and had developed a strategy going forward, but had struggled with moving from the planning stages to implementation. The collaboration of interested parties, namely government, business, environmental bodies and communities, would
ensure the emergence of comprehensive solutions and strategies. Significant strides had been made, to date, with several projects under way, citing the Lesotho Highlands Water Project Phase 2, besides others, and that partnerships had secured the success of the progress that South Africa had made.(www.engineeringnews.co.za).
This cross over bridge is an accident waiting to happen. It is used by school children every day. A call for assistance is made to all the concrete and building companies in the area. Draaikraal is on the Roossenekal road and the bridge is used by many mine employees too. A pensioner of Draaikraal brought this to our attention and we hope that everyone will take hands to make this ‘monster bridge’ a safe crossing, especially for the kids. It is extremely dangerous to use.

Daar was baie riviere. My plek is Lydenburg, dis my hart. Lydenburg is my hart, my groot liefde en huis. Daar by die blou berge ... Deur Michelle Boshoff
A Grade 12 student from Lydenburg High School, Kyle Bronkhorst, has recently by playing a play station game, invented a new drone concept. This concept was discovered by Davidson's division and now Kyle has been given the opportunity to register this concept as a new patent. Seeing that Davidson's division is an international company, all the patent registration costs are in dollars. Ly d e n b u rg H i g h School has supported this acknowledgement by allowing Kyle to
Kyle Bronkhorst
distribute sponsor request forms under their reference. Unfortunately these costs are very high and due to Kyle's family financial situation, he won't be able to afford all the registration fees of $795 and the patent fees of $90 this is without the travelling fees, construct and building of the patent. His proud mother, Venecia Bronkhorst, is currently driving and managing a fund raising campaign to assist her son in achieving this dream opportunity. Once all registration formalities have been n
taken care of, Kyle together with his Mother must travel to Pennsylvania in the USA, where he will be given the opportunity to build and present his concept. This a major breakthrough and an above average achievement for a South African learner. This a plea to all to all established companies, businesses and to the community who can find it in their hearts to please contribute to these expenses. Venecia can be contacted personally should you have any questions at 079 324 2014 or Alta Nel at 071 656 7148.

Verduidelik dié blatante diskriminasie aan my, Mnre.

THE Easter Sunday service will be at the Jesus hill at Paardeplaats, 12km out of town en route to Sabie (route R37) on 1 April. The service will start at 06:00, come sunshine or mist. It will be wise to arrive from 05h30 or earlier, to allow yourself time to climb up the hill and settle in. Although still in darkness, there will be paraffin lanterns to light your way. If you have good torches bring them along.
There will be ample parking down at the gate, with monitors to direct and help you. For those who can't make the climb up the hill, there will be a tractor and trailer. It is a family affair, non-denominational and open to all who want to celebrate this very special occasion. It is a fixed programme with traditional hymns and a sermon delivered by rev Carl Vermaak. This special event is a very inspirational any e x p e r i e n c e , organised annually by Lydenburg's Pastors' Fraternal. As we gather in the dark to watch the sun rise we also celebrate the rising of the Son. Many then go off to celebrate with their families at various churches. Please feel free to phone Brian on 013 1100 320 or 082 416 1379, to find out more.

ONCE again, the 26 member jury of the SA Guild of Motoring Journalist’s caused an uproar from the motoring public. So much so, that we, as ordinary motorists, regard the annual COTY competition as irrelevant. Egmont Sippel went to great lengths to defend the decision to award the Porsche Panamera the top spot. Apparently the new Panamera is as perfect as you can get, with the experienced Mr. Sippel thinking that it is the best car in the world. OK, so no doubt it is good.

work, if you can buy four complete cars for the same price as one other, and both are competing in the COTY. The motoring public has suggested many practical remedies, such as different classes for competitors, but that is clearly politically correct as all will then be winners - siestog! No, there should be very high consideration for best sellers (but then again Toyota and Volkswagen will win every year. No, not politically correct. Add in price and you might arrive at a “fairer” competition. But no, that means that high end vehicles will never stand a chance. Also not politically correct! So, that leaves us with a few categories within the competition, which was the first suggestion in any case. Back to this year’s competition. 1. Porsche Panamera. 2. Volvo S90. 3. Alfa Romeo Guilia. 4. Suzuki Ignis. 5. Kia Picanto. And the rest, of which one was the very nice Peugeot. In my view, despite the excellence of the Panamera, the decision, (based also on sales and price) should have boiled down to only the Kia Picanto and the Suzuki Ignis. One of them should have won. MANY South Africans are glad to see the considerable rainfall in certain parts of South Africa. Yet, those who need to complete their daily commutes in the same weather, may not be as enthusiastic. Rainy weather usually brings a number of challenges to the roads. Below are some tips from the managing director of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert: People driving too slowly: While slowing down in rainy weather is important, some drivers may take this to the extreme. Looking ahead by up to 12 seconds (where visibility permits) will enable you to quickly see these drivers and move around them where possible. If you cannot safely move around, maintain a larger
09
THE impact of the prevailing drought is clearly visible, even in urban areas, with dead lawns and unwashed cars becoming a mark of pride. It has also affected the auto industry, from dealerships to car washes and individual car owners themselves. "Cleanliness is actually an important part of car maintenance, but there are other surprising ways a drought can impact your driving experience," says Jeff Osborne, Head of Gumtree Autos. 1. It could cause damage. Aside from sun damage from the pervasive hot and dry conditions, bird droppings, sea salt and dirt can damage the car's condition. "Dirt can build up and acts like sandpaper, wearing down the paint. When it does rain, the water can mix with pollutants and scrape off the paint," says Osborne. 2. It could affect the performance of your car. Interestingly enough an engineer named Tom Wagner Jr claimed that washed cars are more fuel efficient – by 10%. Turns out, the opposite can be true. When there is significant mud splatter on your car, it can actually reduce wind resistance (drag), like the dimples on a golf ball. The catch is that the dirty has to be evenly distributed. If it is randomly distributed, it can create more drag. 3. It might cost you. A solid layer of dirt could hide a multitude of sins. "It's much harder to notice parking lot scratches and minor bumps when a car is dirty," says Osborne. If not attended to, these scrapes can lead to rust, which can degrade the body of the car and even expose important parts." The lesson, Osborne says, is to use ethical alternatives to keep your car clean. "Car washes that use recycled water is an option, or any number of waterless washing solutions available at retail stores will work but don't let cleanliness slip. It could be detrimental in the long run. Motorpress
following distance and patiently wait for an opportunity to do so. People driving too fast: Do additional checks in your review mirror to quickly see when a driver like this is approaching and move out of their way if you can safely do so. If you are on the highway, avoid using the right hand lane, which is where they are more likely to be. Traffic lights not working: this is common when there has been a large amount of rain. Traffic lights are to be treated like four way stops but with even more caution. In larger intersections many drivers are uncertain of when to go or even reluctant to wait their turn. Never take it for granted that a driver will stop when they are supposed to. Flooding: Avoid areas which are prone to flooding. If you do come across a section of road where there is fast flowing water rather turn around or pull over if you can safely do so. It only takes 15cm of water to lift a car off the tar. Hydroplaning: If you start to hydroplane slowly take your foot off the accelerator and concentrate on steering straight. Never brake. Skidding: If you do start to skid, do not brake but take your foot off the accelerator. Gently steer in the direction you do want to go until you regain control. Be patient: Do not let reckless or impatient drivers take your attention away from the road. Rather accept that these drivers are inevitable and rather focus your attention on getting to your destination safely. ED: We can add that potholes full of water can often not be seen and you cannot judge the depth of the pothole. Look out for splashes of mud on the road. That usually tells you there is a pothole.
