rucks and taxi’s blocked the entrance to Lydenburg from Ohrigstad on Monday morning making it impossible for hundreds of residents to commute to work. The protestors were watched by the SAPS on the scene, but threatened to set a fuel tanker alight if the SAPS intervened. Apparently the truck drivers were forced by a group of angry youths to park their trucks there. But there must be some emergency measure that truck companies can implement if their drivers are literally hi-jacked. And if the trucks are hi-jacked, why can’t the police remove the trucks? If there had been a serious medical emergency or an

accident, the R36 could not have been utilized. Apparently the truck drivers were afraid for their lives and therefore abandoned their trucks and threw the keys into the grass next to the road. People commuting to the mines in Tubatse were also not able to get to work. In addition to this, trucks are destroying Lydenburg roads every single minute of the day. It has now been said in the national media that Lydenburg has the worst roads in the country. Read more on page 3.

DIE burgerregte-organisasie AfriForum veroordeel Eskom se b e p l a n d e 3 5 % elektrisiteitsprysverhoging sterk.

•Natural Stone Flooring •Cement Finishes •Pool Coatings •Waterproofing •Licensed Gas *Torch-On Installations *Rubaro •Wood Treatment •Custom Blinds •Industrial Coatings

TRUCKS blocking the entrances to town is nothing new. This happens in the Limpopo province at the mines nearly every day. With residents displaying their grievances by burning tyres. Last week six people were killed when a bus was set alight. The truck drivers and companies claim that they are also the victims of malicious mobs of people who try to bring their ideology across by disrupting the traffic flow and normal working day. In addition to this incident on Monday, it is a well known fact that Lydenburg can’t take much more of the trucks destroying the towns roads and other routes around the area. The R36 (Badfontein Road), is an excellent example. Lodges there now wait for their guests closer to the

FIVE people allegedly linked to the deadly petrol bomb attack on a bus carrying a group of mineworkers in Burgersfort‚ Limpopo‚ have been arrested‚ police said last Wednesday. Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the group‚ aged between 21 and 30‚ were arrested in different locations in operations over the last two days. "The five suspects will appear in Mecklenburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday on six counts of murder‚ malicious

damage to property and attempted murder‚" said Mojapelo. Limpopo police commissioner LieutenantGeneral Nneke Ledwaba had assembled a high level team of investigators to track down those responsible. The task team had comprised members of the Hawks‚ the Provincial Organised Crime and the Provincial Crime Intelligence units. A reward of up to R500‚000 had also been offered‚ Mojapelo said.

road and drive them to the lodge in 4x4’s. A guest to a well known trout farm over the Easter Weekend said that driving the R36 was the worst experience of her life. She was visibly shaking when she got out of the car. The total disregard of truck drivers for other road users is also a factor. The countless trucks breaking down over the Longtom Pass, R37, can cause delays for tourists and residents travelling to and from Nelspruit for hours. The Lydenburg/ Mashishing Business Chamber is working closely with SANRAL to find a solution to this problem. There have been talks that SANRAL will fix some of the roads in Lydenburg and take over their maintenance. This has been in the works now for two years. Some of the land involved belongs to the Mpumalanga Province and TCM and they don’t want to give up ownership of their land, although they are receptive to the solutions offered by SANRAL. ~ Michelle Boshoff

Kansa Gholfdag- met tema ‘let’s focus on hope Mr Joel (Pompies) Letwaba from Lydenburg writes: As the nation mourns the death of Mama Winnie Mandela, it is proper and fair that we also register our profound sense of loss to the entire country in particular her immediate family Zinzi and Zenani. The life and times of this gallant fighter was in many ways encouraging and highly educational to millions of our people both black and white. A mother with a profound gift of speaking truth to power without any fear or prejudice. It is painful at the same time that much of her worthiness including confessions which might have contributed to her sudden death are being made after she has departed to the father who art in heaven. The request made by her family that the world community must not cry but celebrate her death is quiet commendable. In my capacity as the highly anointed man of God with absolute power to see beyond the imagination of the mind, may the life of Mama Winnie unite us and teach us to embrace one another with love. Bold initiatives taken by all political parties to pay their respect to Mama Winnie's place is an illustration of political maturity by putting their difference behind their backs and celebrate life well spent. People must agree to disagree and that does not mean we are sworn enemies. In my closing statement and that is my direct clarion call to all my followers both black and white, let us all learn to give credit where credit is due. Let us celebrate one another regardless of race, colour and sex, we are God chosen human race. To Mama Winnie Mandela in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ may your soul rest in peace.

Kankerterapie verbeter by die dag.

gaan kyk hoe vergroen mens ’n woestyn. “Who cares?” So, maak vas jou veiligheidsgordel en hou vas, as jy dink dinge verander vinnig - “You aint seen nothing yet!”.

Number one business directory for town The Lydenburg/Mashishing Business Directory was introduced to the business market in 2012 to serve as a link, facilitator and co-ordinator for the broader business and residential community in the area. Under the umbrella of the Lydenburg/Mashishing Business Chamber, this publication has proven itself as a valuable marketing tool, introducing businesses and industry to one another and the broader community. The annual Directory, used as a “yellow pages” for the area, currently covers Lydenburg/Mashishing, Burgersfort, Steelpoort and even further afield, listing businesses and the services they offer as well as useful area maps, and pages containing community information, Chamber news and a section highlighting Mining and Industry supporting our community. Due to overwhelming demand, the print run will be increased, yet again, from 8000 to 10 000 copies. These are distributed to

businesses, mining and industry and their head offices, local Government – and to entities further afield, transacting business with Lydenburg/Mashishing, Burgersfort, Steelpoort and surrounds. We also distribute at Alzu Petroport on the N4 near Middelburg. This quality annual publication, produced as a “coffee table magazine” with a multi year shelve life, aims at showcasing business and industry's role in boosting local economy and investing in community upliftment. In principle, this popular annual directory represents all sectors of business and industry, embodying Chamber's slogan: Together we can!

STEELPOORT as the spiritual capital of the Batubatse. Introduction by Ngwato Mohubane. The unification and diaspora of the Batubatse. The Batubatse are part of the Northern Sotho tribes who live mainly in the rural areas of what is today Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. Led by a past warrior and strong leader, Umtubadzi Masie, the group initially moved from an area in the upper reaches of the Tubatse (Steelpoort) River valley what was later known as Mapoch's Lands, to the present day Lydenburg/Mashishing area. They later moved to the current Steelpoort/Burgersfort area. The Tubatse River flows north-eastwards and is a tributary of the Olifants River joining it at the lower end of the basin. Its source is located at Kwaggaskop, a farm between Dullstroom, Stoffberg and Belfast. The main tributaries of the Tubatse River are the Klip, Dwars, Watervals and Spekboom rivers. This peaceful agrarian grouping out of fear of attacks from the neighbouring Pedi gathering under Sekhukhuni moved away following the river to its confluence with the Olifants, down the mountain to settle in the area near the current town of Mica in the Lowveld. It was during this period that this group tribe started to identify itself as the Batubatse tribe. The arrival of the Voortrekkers and other white settlers during the nineteenth century led to the concentration of population around some of the black chiefdoms, while other tribal capitals were abandoned or destroyed. Many blacks were also attracted to the towns established by the European colonisers. The Bantu Land Act of 1913 and the Bantu Land and Trust Act of 1936, provided separate land reserved for blacks, under which the Batubatse, Ba Shai and their breakaway sections were also confined to such reserves. Such was the administrative and legal machinery under which the historical development of the Batubatse continued till 1994. By this time the once-united Butabutse tribe had been divided into a number of separate communities and moved to other areas, some without a senior traditional leader. Source: The Batubatse, Their Story and Traditions by Adv. Ponele r SeShai as told by David Hilton Barber Sekhukhune land. At the height of the Pedi power under Thulare, about 1790-1820, historical Sekhukhune land included an area stretching from the site of present-day Rustenburg in the west to the Lowveld in the east and ranging as far south as the Vaal River. The area under Pedi control was severely limited after the military campaigns by British troops in 1879. Following their defeat native reserves were created for the Pedi and for other northern Sotho people groups by the Transvaal Republic's Native Location Commission. Between 1972 and 1994 part of Sekhukhuneland was included in the Lebowa bantustan. The territory was not homogeneous, being divided into two major and several minor portions. Having been intended as a homeland for the Northern Sotho speaking tribes such as the Pedi, Lebowa included swathes of Sekukuniland. However, various other non-Northern Sotho Speaking tribes, including the Northern Ndebele, Batswana and VhaTsonga lived in the bantustan as well. Sekukuniland is named after Pedi chief Sekhukhune or Sekukuni, who succeeded Sekwati in 1860 or 1861, and it is the only native region in South Africa named after a famous local chief. Present day Sekhukhune District Municipality in Limpopo Province is named after this natural region. Source: Wikipedia

Early in 1876, various reasons were made up by the Boer authorities to attack King Sekhukhune and his people. The incident that started the fighting happened when Dinkwanyane's followers captured a wagonload of wood belonging to a Boer called Jankowitz. A fresh report out of the United Kingdom suggests that the next-generation Ford Focus RS will employ a mild-hybrid set-up to boost peak power past 300 kW and allow the hyper hatch to take on the upcoming version of the MercedesAMG A45. According to Autocar, the Blue Oval brand will reveal its new Focus RS in 2020, complete with a 48-volt mild hybrid system expected to boost both power and efficiency. The report suggests that the upcoming version of the hottest Focus will make in excess of 300 kW and around 575 N.m, putting it squarely in line to compete with the likes of next-generation versions of Mercedes-AMG’s A45 and Audi Sport’s RS3 Sportback. Autocar adds that the Focus RS will retain the familiar 2,3-litre four-cylinder petrol unit, likely hiked from the current 257 kW to around 275 kW thanks to upgrades to the turbocharger, induction system and more. The 48-volt mild hybrid arrangement will,

HYUNDAI has whipped the covers off its facelifted Tucson at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, revealing an updated version of one of its best-selling vehicles. The Korean crossover gains a fresh design, revised powertrain line-up for some markets (South African details have yet to be revealed) and more advanced technology features. The Tucson now features the latest interpretation of the brand’s so-called “cascading grille” along with a new lighting signature (with full LED headlamps) as well as a redesigned front bumper, skid plate and wheels. Round back, you’ll find revised tail-lamps, a redesigned rear bumper and new exhaust trim. Hyundai says new features inside include a premium sound system by Krell, a wireless QIstandard smartphone charger and a seven-inch information screen, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An eight-inch navigation system will also be offered. Although the cabin depicted above is as seen in the US-spec version of the updated Tucson, it includes a new centre stack design, revised vents, fresh leather seats, an updated rear-view mirror and a tweaked instrument cluster. The suite of safety systems now includes autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, driver attention warning and a speed limit indicator function. Furthermore, a surround view monitor, high beam assist and advanced smart cruise control (with stop-and-go function) have been added. carmag.co.za

APART from its license, insurance is the biggest grudge purchase car owners must make. But what has the biggest effect on the price of your premium when buying a used car and is there anything you can do to keep it as low as possible? Almost daily there is a new upstart in the short-term insurance business, bombarding media consumers with flashy colours, catchy tunes and the promise of cash-backs, loyalty schemes, no-claim bonuses and all sorts of marketing fluff. When you finance a car, it must be insured. How much your premium will cost is calculated through a highly complex matrix of circumstances and probabilities, which combined ultimately determine your risk profile. Let’s take a closer look at the influencing factors.

8. The driver. The demographics of the person piloting the car play a bigger role in determining the cost of insurance than the car itself. Your address (is it in a congested urban area or a quiet, secured rural one?), age (the younger the driver, the higher the rates), gender (males are more likely to crash), marital status (married couples are more risk-averse, especially as parents) are the key components, along with your driving history and claims record. The more often you have claimed before, the higher risk you are perceived to be as a driver. Clearly there are things that can and cannot be done to keep your car insurance premium at a minimum. It may be impractical or unaffordable to move to a lower risk area or only drive when the roads are quieter, but being smart with your choice of vehicle and maintaining a good driving record can go a long way towards saving some of your hard-earned money. Autotrader - Wheels 24.co.za

1. The value of the car. This is obvious. The more expensive a car, the more it needs to be insured for. 2. The cost of repairs. It’s easy to argue that an older car is cheaper to repair than a new one, but this isn’t always the case. The availability of parts – especially if it’s a rare model, the manufacturer’s level of representation in the country, the technologies employed in the car and the skills required to fix it – all play a part. Less common equals more expensive. 3. Safety features. Safer cars are seen to be less accidentprone. Most cars have been fitted with anti-lock brakes as standard for the past two decades, while newer systems such as park distance control, lane departure warnings and driver drowsiness alerts all contribute to the mitigation of the likelihood of accidents. The flip side is that once out of warranty, these very systems are also expensive to repair. Bear in mind, too, that on lower-value cars, the replacement of an airbag may cause the vehicle to be written off after a crash – even if it’s a minor one – as the cost of replacing the air bag sometimes exceeds the value of the vehicle. 4. Historical data. This pertains to the number of previous incidents recorded that the vehicle has been involved in. For example, certain SUVs have a history of rolling over or thieves having a certain preference for specific top-end models. 5. Performance. High-performance models inherently carry more risk since they will be driven faster, which mathematically increases the possibility of being involved in an accident due to driver error. 6. Enhancements. Is there anything you’ve added to make the vehicle more attractive to would-be thieves? An expensive sound system or easy-to-nick aftermarket wheels without sufficient nut locks? 7. Usage. How many kilometres does the car cover per year? Is it driven in risky rush-hour traffic or only on Sunday mornings? Is it used for work or play, or both?

Gophers Golf at Akabeko GOPHERS Charity Golf has had a great start for the 2018 season with games played at Lydenburg Golf Club using the IPS format. The winners were Johan Viljoen (1st), Japie Brits (2nd) and Nadia Venter (3rd) with Desmond Clayton achieving “nearest the pin”. A more social format of scrambled drive, in pairs, was played at the Akabeko Resort golf course, with Renier Van Dijk and Johan Viljoen (1St), Ryno Le Grange and Gideon Du Preez (2nd) and Paul Kruger and Clarissa vamWèzel (3rd) with Johan Viljoen “nearest the pin”. The focus for Gophers members, besides raising charity funds, is to encourage previous and current players, as well as the social and occasional/beginner players, to enjoy a social day on the beautiful golf courses we have in our area. Players do not need to be a club member or affiliated to SAGA or even have an official handicap. No membership fees are required to join the Gophers as players automatically become members for the year. Gophers Charity Golf, a non-profit organization, raises funds from a portion of the green fees charged per game. This collection is then donated annually to a recipient selected from nominations received from Gophers players. This year a charity drive has been undertaken to invite companies to assist in raising charity funds by being a sponsor for a “Gophers Day” through a cash donation of R2500.00

The pair winners for the Akabeko game on 4 March are: from left (back) Paul Kruger (3rd); (front): Ryno Le Grange (2nd), Gideon Du Preez (2nd), Clarissa Van Wèzel (3rd), Johan Viljoen (1st and nearest the pin), Renier van Dijk (1st) (prizes will be bought from this). In return, the golf day will be named after the sponsors and free advertising/promotion available for the sponsor at the prize giving function. WBHO have kindly offered sponsorship for our next game. Other companies interested can contact Bruce at 082 801 682. The next Gophers/WBHO fixture will be at Highlands Gate Golf Course, near Dullstroom, on Sunday 15 April 2018 with tee-off times from 09h40. Players are asked to confirm their Huawei P20 Pro Smartphone SONY Xperia L1 Smartphone starting time by contacting Bruce (above number) or Wayne (079 883 4407) and to register at the course by 08h45 for confirmation of their four ball. The green fees are R600.00 per player for 18 holes which includes a caddy cart for two. Please come join the Gophers for an enjoyable game of golf, with spectacular views, on an Ernie Els designer layout, that is known uChoose Flexi 165 uChoose Flexi 120 as the highest altitude course in South Africa and help contribute to a worthy cause.
