Dade grew his hair to donate after dads’ cancer scare
Dade Roode, Head boy at Entheos Christian School, made a decision to grow his hair to donate to CANSA after his father was diagnosed with Melanoma cancer, his father is now in remission. Dade has been growing his hair since April of 2016. When he first decided to embark on this journey in support of not only his father but all who suffer from cancer, it wasn't a huge thing for him to donate his hair. “It will grow back, it is just a haircut for me, but for people suffering through Chemotherapy and Radiation, it is the theft of yet another part of you that may never come back”, were his words. Nowadays it isn't such a huge thing for men to have long hair, but for a High School student, the journey was more difficult. Dade had to get a letter of permission from the CANSA Association, his parents, as well as the Principal and School Governing Body; he had to explain to new parents why the Head boy did not conform to the school rules. Now he realises that it is not 'just another haircut. He realises why so few woman actually do donate their long hair. It is a loss, a part of you that you have nurtured and looked after for years. The hours you spend fixing it in the mornings, the many products you go through to find 'just the right one', the person you become because of your hair, your crowning glory. On Friday 25 May 2018, 2 years and 1 month after committing to grow his hair, he has finally cut off 30cm. Thank you, Dade, for having the courage to withstand the sometimes rude remarks and criticism you had to endure from your peers, you are an example to us all and we are proud of you. Thank you to Lize from Jar-Z-Licious Hair and Nail Studio for always making time for Dade and encouraging him in the difficult stages!

In debt Joel Pompies (Letwaba) writes: MY emphasis today is all about our ever escalating Eskom account which is sitting at a staggering four hundred and thirty one million rand. The crisis requires man and women of good character to engage each other in good faith with the current political leadership to find a solution to the Eskom account. I am told by the highly revered Maslo hierachy of thoughts institute that the right to education comes with the responsibility to respect teachers, doing school work and being in class on time. Electricity is a basic constitutional right of every citizen and that also comes with the responsibility to pay for it. Absconding from the noble task of paying for our services is unfair and unfortunate. The failure by our political leadership to engage our communities in good faith is also worrying factor to the rates and taxpaying residents in good standing. The 2017 selective and painful load shedding which affected some whilst other sections were on honeymoon warrants an explanation. We are still reeling from shock why for three months I was subjected to a dark world when my municipal account stands at zero. The wheelchair bound granny in Mandela village and known to be on medication which requires be stored in a refrigerator and never defaulting on municipal payment, still asking a question, why? The truth of the matter is that we are living in a terrible state of absolute anarchy and with no prospect of political intervention. Many areas in Mashishing including our neighbouring farms have been declared no go areas with more than seventy percent on an extreme electricity bridging mode. Obviously going into those areas is equivalent to death penalty. Without a shadow of doubt and fear of contradiction it's important to tackle the perceived root causes and without justifying any of those social ills. The failure by our municipality to improve the indigent policy and personnel in dealing with sensitive issues of electricity is a grave blunder. It

is alleged that the personnel assigned with the task of ensuring our people are properly treated are extremely abusive. Treating our elders both black and whites with dignity and respect is sacrosanct and non-negotiable. The suicidal behaviour of undermining the Batho-pele principle is equivalent to a' coup de tat'. The absolute failure by our municipality to apply the proper policy of uniformity in cutting off electricity to non payers is clouded with controversy. The allegations that switch offs are only applied to those perceived to be not so loyal and disciplined members of the ruling party is wrong and barbaric. All defaulters must be treated the same without any fear or favour. The country is experiencing the unprecedented level of unemployment and crime which is ravaging our d into
beautiful mother land into another Burundi. Therefore, it is embarrassing to witness people being employed on the basis of their standing to the ANC. The LED department must be seen to be performing to the benefit of all our people both black and whites, your duty LED is to empower and grow the economy of TCLM And nothing else. The spirit or demon of devouring within the LED department in our municipality must be of major concern to leadership and the clergy. T h e L E D department which is being operated like lady Macbeth mafia style meant to amass wealth must be exposed. My emphasis today was not to demonise people but reminding them of arrogant behaviours that are killing our municipality and making our TCLM a laughing stock of the outside world. It is my wish and hope that my plea must receive the n e c e s s a r y attention.

Development milestones are behaviours or physical skills seen in infants and children as they grow and develop. The milestones are different for each age range and there is a normal range in which a child may reach each milestone. Maar ek wag nou al twee weke om dit vir my lesers te vertel. Jou skoene mag nie uitsteek nie. Dan is dit te kort. Brain Basics workshop IS it possible to optimise your work performance? Very possible, said Manus du Toit from Brainy Acts in Nelspruit. Du Toit, also Area Manager Mpumalanga for the international business generation organisation BNI, held a "Brain Basics" workshop for members of the Longtom BNI branch at Paardeplaats Nature Retreat last week. He shared seven basic brain habits that have been proven to drastically improve not only performance in the workplace, but also general well-being, health and happiness. “Everything you say, think or do, triggers a chemical reaction in the brain,” Manus said. A negative thought or action releases an inhibitor, he explained to a spell bound group of twenty business men and women from Lydenburg, gathering informally at Paardeplaats. “However, should one choose to actively practise seven basic brain habits,
improvement is guaranteed.” ATTITUDE is golden rule number one. No qualification, skill or incentive equips you better for performance. BRAIN FITNESS is rule number two. The thicker the corpus colossum, the quicker brain messages are delivered. To demonstrate this fact, Du Toit had his audience in stitches, practising simple crossover exercises that could be performed daily - i.e. touching your left ear with your right hand with the other hand resting on your nose. Playing a musical instrument, exercise, sport and reading, are all examples of activities contributing to brain fitness. A HEALTHY DIET is the next prerequisite: * Drink 8 glasses of water per day - not counting coffee, tea or other drinks. * Protein - more white than red meat and more fish than chicken. * At least 5 fresh fruit or veg per day. * Nuts and avo and other specific brain foods - but don't overdo quantities REGULAR EXERCISE does not only result in a healthier brain, but also addresses conflict, stress and general emotional health. WILL European diesel and petrol car bans kill the auto industry? The UK and France have put plans in motion to eliminate petrol and diesel cars by 2040 in a bid to improve air quality. While these bans are still largely conceptual, it's suspected that they will make both the private and professional sale of pure petrol and diesel cars illegal (while owning and driving the cars will remain legal). OEMs have long accepted that petrol and diesel-powered vehicles are a dying breed, and that the need for car ownership is diminishing, says Jeff Osborne, Head of Gumtree Automotive. "The ban is neither ridiculous nor ambitious, as critics and supporters claims. I'd be hard-pressed to name a manufacturer that hasn't yet added a hybrid or electric model to their assembly line. I don't think anyone in Europe was expecting to sell conventional petrol cars by 2040. Whether South Africa will implement their own ban in the future remains to be seen, but there will be repercussions for the local industry, to be certain." Cars and car parts remain one of our largest exports and automakers will have to adapt or die, says Osborne. "The local manufacturing industry will change dramatically within the next two decades, but the local energy industry will have to follow suit or it will be an exercise in futility. We are electricity-poor as it stands and unfortunately, unless we are
weaned entirely off nuclear and coal-power in twenty years, mass adoption of electric vehicles will not be as carbon efficient as we would like. We also have to wonder what the cost of running such a vehicle will be, as electricity costs continue to climb. Certainly, mass global production of electric and hybrid vehicles will lower the price of the vehicles themselves – which has been a barrier for buyers in the past – but there are more factors to consider in the South African market." The UK government's plan already includes mass investment towards retrofitting, low-emission taxis and financial plug-in benefits for consumers, as well as building convenient low cost charging stations. "The switch to zero emission cars cannot come from the auto industry alone. Government will have to step in and step up. If you really want to lower carbon emissions, cities will need fewer cars, not just cleaner cars. We will need a safe and efficient mass transit system, cheap and available parking in cities and incentives for cyclists and pedestrians if we want to affect change." Pure petrol and diesel cars will become obsolete. "Whether South Africa will be ready for that obsolescence remains to be seen," says Osborne. Jeff Osborne, Head of Gumtree Auto

WE’ll admit it … we checked our calendar when this press release hit our inbox. Yes, Honda in the UK has revealed a Civic Type R bakkie concept, but it’s no belated April Fools joke. Built by a specialist team from the product engineering department at Honda’s factory in Swindon and codenamed “Project P”, the bakkie has been modified and developed from the standard road car to create what the Japanese automaker calls “potentially one of the fastest pickup trucks” around.
To create the Project P concept, the team used a preproduction version of the hot hatchback and adapted the design rearwards from the C-pillars, with sweeping lines from the roofline to the back hiding a flatbed loading area in the centre of the car where the rear seats and luggage compartment would normally be. Finished in Rallye Red paint, the concept retains the Civic Type R’s trademark rear wing, which is movable to allow direct and unfettered access to the rear of the bakkie. Using the same powertrain, suspension and gearbox as the standard road car, Honda estimates that Project P will complete the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in less than six seconds and reach a top speed of more than 265 km/h. “We have a special projects division at the factory in Swindon and this project was a fantastic opportunity for the team to show just what their creative minds could do,” said Alyn James, project lead. “The passion that our engineers have for Honda is shown in our latest creation and we are even considering taking it to the Nürburgring to see if we can take the record for the fastest front-wheel-drive pickup truck,” he added. Phil Webb, head of the car division at Honda UK, added the concept demonstrates the “commitment of the team”, adding that they went “above and beyond outside working hours to deliver the final product”. “There are no plans to put this in to production, but we will be using it to transport our lawn and garden products as and when required,” Webb added. carmag.co.za

HOEWEL die nuwe Ford Fiesta met die eerste oogopslag baie na die vorige model lyk, is dit ’n geheel nuwe motor. En wat ’n motor is dit nie! Daar is vyf modelle in die nuwe reeks, die 1.0 Trend 6-spoed, 1.0 Trend 6-sp. (Auto), 1.5 TDCi 6-spoed, 1.0 Titanium 6-sp en 1.0 Titanium 6-sp auto. Ons het die 1.0 Trend 6-spoed gery. Kraglewering wissel van 63 kW in die diesel, tot 74 kW in Trend en 92 kW in Titanum. Wringkrag is 175 Nm (diesel) en 170 Nm vir al die petrolmodelle. ’n Totaal van ses bakkleure en twee tipes allooiwiele is beskikbaar. Al die modelle kom met Ford se 6.5” SYNC raakskerm stelsel met baie goeie klank, Android en iPod, 2xUSB, Bloutand, en kontroles op die stuurwiel. Op die Titanium modelle het die klankstelsel 7 luidsprekers en ’n 8” raakskerm met ingeboude GPS navigasie. Lugversorging is standaard, met klimaatbeheer in Titanium. ’n Ritrekenaar verskaf allerlei informasie en die vier instrumente sluit in spoed, toereteller, brandstofvlak en temperatuur. Alles baie netjies. Die raakskerms is die groot “floating” tipe wat ons eerste in nuwe Hilux gesien het en nou oral voorkom. Dit is nou mode by meeste vervaardigers, omdat die skerms so groot raak en nie meer in die paneelbord integreer kan word nie. Persoonlik hou ek nie daarvan nie, want dit lyk of aangeplak of na ’n nagedagte. Op Titanium is daar nog baie ekstras, soos groter wiele, sportsitplekke, togbeheer, LED dagryligte, sleutellose aanskakel, stop/start en nog meer. Almal het elektriese (een druk bestuurder) ruite, afstandsluit, alarm, 4 lugsakke, ABS met EBD, ESC, EBA, TC, ESC, HLA, Isofix punte vir kinderstoeltjies, trurat parkeersensors, elektriese kragstuur en nog vele ander veiligheidskenmerke. Die bagasieruim is lekker groot en beenspasie agter is redelik en baie lekker voorin. Met die inklimslag het ’n paar dinge my dadelik opgeval, wat verander is vanaf die vorige model. Die kontroles op die paneelbord is aansienlik verminder en vereenvoudig. Die vorige model het ’n miljoen knoppies op die paneelbord gehad. Alle materiale vertoon goed en is sag om aan te raak. Sitplekke is gemaklik. Op die pad het my eerste goeie indrukke verder verbeter. Die driesilinder 1.0 Ecoboost enjin is ’n juweel. Geen wonder hierdie enjin wen jaar na jaar die beste enjin in sy klas in die wêreldwye kompetisie nie. Dit trek soos ’n bom. Ek is gemaklik in vyfde teen 150 km/u teen Laske Nakke se bult op. Remme is puik, ratskakeling glad (die 6-spoed posisies lê na aan mekaar en jy moet oplet) en hantering is puik. Daar is geen suspensie of windgeraas nie. As jy hom roer grom die driesilider baie mooi. Soveel so dat ek twyfel of ek by Ford se uitstekende brandstofverbruiksyfers sal kan kom, as dit myne is, want dit is te lekker om dié Ford te roer. So, waarvan het ek nie gehou nie? Wel ek is outyds en het gemeld dat ek nie van die SYNC skerm hou wat aangeplak lyk nie. Die ratskakeling is, hoewel glad, na aan mekaar. Waarvan het ek baie gehou? Die juweel van ’n enjin is wakker, het byna geen turbotraagheid nie en moet in die regte hande op die snelweg super lig op petrol wees. Die motor het ordentlike sonskerms met smukspieeltjies in albei. Die ritgehalte is puik, in ag genome ons ongelyk paaie. Remme en hantering is uitstekend. Die nuwe Fiesta kom met ’n vierjaar/120 000 km waarborg en ’n 4-jaar/ 60 000 km diensplan en is te kry by McGee Ford Lydenburg en Burgersfort. Die Fiestas is nie meer goedkoop teen amper R 263 000 vir die intree 1.0 Trend nie, maar klim in en ry en jy kom gou agter waarvoor jy betaal. Ek kan dié moter met gerustheid aanbeveel. Andre Coetzee
