Actions against the Municipal Manager

ast week protestors flocked to the s t r e e t s o f Ly d e n b u r g a n d embarked on an unprotected strike. These protestors are mainly members of SAMWU (SA Municipal Workers Union). They also tried to disrupt a Council Meeting. But the Thaba Chweu Council was able to continue the meeting with the main issue: Intent to suspend the Accounting Officer/ Municipal Manager (MM). Cllrs. Nicko Jansen van Vuuren and Gravett
Herbst submitted questions about certain actions at the municipality. In lieu of the questions the Mayoral Committee held a council meeting last week about the possible suspension of the MM and the current state of financial affairs in Thaba Chweu.
The Council submitted to the suspension of the MM in order to stop the alarming rate of spending and to create a conducive environment for the investigation with respect to the financial problems engulfing the municipality.
The MM was placed on special leave after the Council Meeting and allocated seven days to provide reasons why he should not be suspended. ~ Michelle Boshoff - Continues on page 2

Another council meeting is scheduled for later this week to address the suspension of the Municipal Manager and the court interdict. In addition to the streets that were trashed last week and the council Meeting where the Municipal Manager was suspended for seven days... the Mashishing Civic Coalition also obtained a court order against the suspension of the Executive Mayor and the Municipal Manager. The court order was granted at the Regional Court in Mbombela. “The agenda for the suspension of these two officials is political. It is extremely aggressive and we need to fight against fraud and corruption. The forensic report will show the involvement of council members in corruption and therefore we want them in the council to attest to their contribution to the whole Thaba Chweu crisis,” said Mr Pompies Letwaba, chairperson of the Mashishing Civic Coalition. The Notice of Motion to obtain the interdict against the council meeting last week stated: “ • should the special council meeting be allowed to take place, the outcome will be no doubt to the detriment of the community.

RVF is a viral disease in domestic animals such as buffalo, camels, cattle, goats and sheep. The disease causes fever, severe illness, abortions ( maybe 100% in the herd), high morbidity and mortality rate. The disease is spread to livestock through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Rift Valley fever is Zoonotic, meaning it can spread to people through contact with infected livestock. There is no specific treatment for RVF. Clinical signs of RVF : •Sudden onset of abortion storms. •100% deaths of lambs under 5-6 days old. •High fever , swollen lymph nodes. •Nasal and ocular discharges in mature animals. •Profuse fetid diarrhoea ( often haemorrhagic). •Death. ANY ANIMAL suspected of having RVF should be reported to the State Veterinarian (013 235 2071/2) as it is an controlled disease. There is currently an outbreak in the Jacobsdal, Fouresmith area, and due to movement especially through horse boxes, trucks and visitors to that area, the infected mosquitoes can be transported to our area. All cattle and sheep older than 3-6 months must be vaccinated with a registered RVF viral vaccine. The inactivated OBP RVF vaccine is safe for pregnant animals. Slenkdalkoors is 'n ernstige (akute) insekgedraagde (muskiete) virussiekte van skape, bokke en beeste (hoefdiere). Slenkdalkoors hou ook 'n groot gesondheidsgevaar vir die mens in. Die naam “Slenkdalkoors” kom van die Slenkdalgebied in Kenia, waar die siekte die eerste keer beskryf is. Die virus wat Slenkdalkoors veroorsaak, is die eerste keer in 1930 geïsoleer tydens 'n epidemie onder skape in die Slenkdalgebied. Tydens die epidemie het die siekte ook mense in daardie gebied aangetas. Van 1950 tot 1956 was daar verskeie epidemies van Slenkdalkoors onder skape en beeste in Suid-Afrika, waartydens mense ook die siekte opgedoen het. In 1953 is die virus wat Slenkdalkoors veroorsaak, uit muskiete (Culex theileri en Aedes caballus) gekweek nadat die siekte onder skape uitgebreek het. Van 1969 tot 1976 het verskeie wydverspreide uitbrake van Slenkdalkoors onder skape en beeste in Suider-Afrika voorgekom en uiteraard groot geldelike verliese vir produsente tot gevolg gehad. Met 'n uitbraak in 1975 van Slenkdalkoors onder skape en beeste in Suid-Afrika, was daar ook sterfgevalle onder mense wat die siekte opgedoen het. Selfs ek het in die groef verval om Engels in elke tweede sin te gebruik en as ek aan die Afrikaanse woord moet dink - wil my brein nie werk nie. Twitter het gegons tussen K a t h y G r i ff i n , o m s t r e d e Amerikaanse komediant wat met ‘n foto van Trump se onthoofde kop staan en Stormy Daniels - die porno ster met wie Donald Trump klaarblyklik ‘n ‘onderhandeling’ gehad het in 2006 toe sy vrou Melania swanger was. Daar was ‘n behoorlike internetboksgeveg aan die gang. Ek praat van miljoene twiets per minuut. Dit het gegons oor die Trump-administrasie wat onwettige immigrante se kinders van hulle weggeneem het op die Texas grens. En die president kon nie minder daaroor gepla wees dat 2000 kinders van hul ouers weggeneem is nie. En nou moet die kinders weer aan hul ouers terugbesorg word - daar is geen papierwerk om dit te bewerkstellig nie. Dis gelukkig Amerika se probleem. Als in ag geneem - haat Kathy Griffin vir Trump en al die Hollywood Demokrate ook - en baklei oor en weer met hom. Hy dink nie - twiet net. En toe daag Stormy Daniels, die porno ster ook by politieke opskopte op - en Kathy Griffin en Stormy is nou beste vriende. Daaroor is Trump éérs kwaad en hy hou aan twiet. Maar Hoorhierso-lesers - kyk na die agtergrond van die groot geveg. Dit verskuif die klem van die migrante krisis en die kinders wat glo in ‘konsentrasiekamp’ omstandighede agter tralies aangehou word. So terwyl hierdie groot twitter-oorlog aan die gang is... is daar chaos op die Texas-grens. Maar Trump is net gepla oor sy ego. En wat dit meer lagwekkend maak is dat sy pornoster knippie nou ook ‘n politieke agenda het. In Suid-Afrika sit ons met duisende immigrante wat die land instroom. Ons heet hulle welkom. In Europa kruis hulle die oseane met klein bote - party is verlede week weggewys. So ons het Kathy Griffin nodig en iemand moet ’n porno-ster betrek. Dan sal ons miskien wakker word. Daar gebeur dinge agter ons rug - soos plaasaanvalle, die immigrantekwessies en hoë misdaad. Te veel dinge gaan in die land aan en ons Afrikaners is stom. Ons aanvaar net dinge ons moet ook begin betoog. Al is dit met kontroversiële foto’s soos dié een op Time tydskrif se voorblad (wat saamgestel is uit twee aparte foto’s) maar dit spreek boekdele. A number of incentives, including a new junior men's category, will ensure that the Bestmed Jock Classic remains an attractive option for a wide range of cyclists when it takes place in Mpumalanga next month. The race on July 14 covers 155km, divided into three stages, and will take riders along a route from Mbombela to White River and Sabie. The distances for the three legs are 48km, 45km and 62km respectively. ASG Events acting chief executive Fritz Pienaar said they felt the race was the perfect vehicle to keep riders active during the cold winter months. He added that there were several benefits to competing in one of the oldest road races in the country, which compared favourably to similar events on the international stage. “The Jock Classic has some of the most beautiful routes in the country and includes climbs which provide a good idea of what riders can experience in overseas events,” said Pienaar. “It's the perfect opportunity for riders to stay in shape during the winter months and takes place on roads which are safe for cycling.” Entries for the event close on July 4, but he said there was an incentive for riders to submit their names by June 25. “Those who have entered and paid the entry fee by then will receive a R150 voucher which can be redeemed at any ASG store,” he said. “These, for example, can be used to purchase HIGH5 nutritional supplements, which are so valuable during races of this nature.” The junior men's category was a new addition to the Jock Classic this year, providing a separate race for the younger riders, said Pienaar. “The difference is that the junior men will start at White River and will only be doing stages two and three. “However, in order for this category to have their own starting batch and commissaire there will have to be at least 30 entrants. “Should there be fewer than 30 participants they will be moved to the open-batch starting time.” Pienaar said there was much for the riders and spectators to look forward to on the day. “We are looking to have an exciting vibe at the finish venue, with live music on offer and a beer garden available. “The spectators will not be left out because there will be plenty of food vendors and a variety of entertainment available for them to enjoy.”

Oral in die dorp is waterlekke, terwyl ons baie swak reën gehad het. Hoe lank voor die water klaar is? ’n Stuk teer in Prellerstraat is nou al jare weg na munisipale “herstelwerk” aan ’n waterlek. En so gaan dit oral.
Waar hulle grou, word alles net so gelos. Die plek lyk soos ’n myn. Die munisipaliteit se beweerde “verloor“ van R 300 M kon meeste van die Eskom skuld betaal het. Dit gaan nie meer oor of julle skuldig is aan wanadministrasie of nie. Dit gaan oor swak diens. Die mense is moeg vir julle. Hulle is moeg vir ANC kader “deployment” in Lydenburg. Julle moet weg. Dit is nie onderhandelbaar nie. Ek hoop en bid net die mense gaan nie infrastruktuur verder verwoes nie. Die fokus moet wees op waar die probleem is, naamlik ’n totaal wanfunksionele stadsraad en sy amptenary. Reg of weg!

Last chance to enter SA's battle of the boerewors ENTRIES for the 2018 Championship Boerewors competition are open and with a new competition structure in place, it is now even more accessible for those with a special recipe for traditional boerewors up their sleeves. Boerewors enthusiasts who believe that their recipe has what it takes, are invited to enter before Friday, 29 June 2018 to stand a chance of being crowned the 2018 champion. The culinary experts at the South African Chefs Association (SACA) will once again oversee the judging process. Once validated, paper judging will commence and the Top 30 recipes will be selected. During a rigorous judging and tasting process, the Top 10 recipes will be selected. These finalists will be required to showcase their boerewors-making skills at the finale on Wednesday, 29 August before the winner of the 2018 Championship Boerewors competition is revealed. Prizes are up for grabs from sponsors Coca-Cola, Wellington's and Toyota, with the grand prize being a Toyota Hilux DC 2.8 GD-6 Raider worth over R 516 000. TOP Gear isn’t famed for a penchant for subtlety, but some things just end up looking right even though they aren’t the flashiest of projects. And this Toyota Land Cruiser bakkie by Proffitt’s Resurrection Land Cruisers in the “States” is one of them. Based in Colorado and run by Jeremiah Proffitt (best name in car modification, bar none) and his wife Chandra, Resurrection eponymously takes old Toyota products and makes them… better. Restorations, restomods, pretty much the usual fare. But its SEMA bakkie from ’17 caught our eye, simply because in a world of flashy outrageousness, it looks like a proper farm bakkie. Albeit a fairly unique one.

It’s not quite as it seems, obviously. This isn’t so much a restomod as a Frankenstein, but a lovingly prepared one. Built as a showboat for Cummins’ 120kW/360Nm 2.8-litre turbodiesel – itself a relatively modest powerplant – the body is a 79-series Land Cruiser bakkie dropped onto a ’93 FJ80 frame, itself lengthened by about 20-inches. The rear is bobbed by about a foot for better departure angle when off-roading, and the suspension is three-link at the front and five at the back, with modern Bilstein shocks. The motor is hooked up to a five-speed manual ‘box, part-time four-wheel drive/transfer case plus electronic locking diffs, and runs on 34-inch Maxxis tyres. Simple, effective, good. Custom bumpers, a winch, some extra lighting and a few careful tweaks and you have a bakkie that makes you double take for all the right reasons. You can tell it’s a worker, too – the interior doesn’t have carpets, instead being finished with simple Vortex sprayliner (a paint that sets like concrete – and the same stuff that lines the bed), meaning that you can hose it out at the end of the day. Apparently it was built in just nine weeks ‘after hours’, but to us, the appeal lies in the fact that this is a relatively modest vehicle that just feels right. It might not have huge power or titanium engine bits, but sometimes, subtle can be even more effective. And it’d be a hell of a thing to have in the garage for actual real life… topgear.co.za

WITH the mid-year school holidays fast approaching, families will soon start preparing for those long drives ahead. "Keeping the kids safe and entertained is an important part of the trip," says Dewald Ranft, Chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), an affiliate association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI). He says it is essential when travelling with young children to ensure that car seats are properly secured. Statistics show that up to 70% of car seats are incorrectly installed. Parents must also ensure that the seat is the age-appropriate size and kids who are big enough to use the normal seat belts are buckled in at all times. “Children, especially toddlers, get fidgety when sitting still for more than two hours. It is important to stop at regular intervals to give everyone a chance to stretch their legs and refuel for the next leg Try to pick pit-stops with fun activities for children such as jungle gyms. This gives kids a chance to work off some energy without distracting mom or dad while they drive!” Making sure the car is in tip top condition ahead of the drive also needs to be a priority. Ranft recommends heading to a MIWA-accredited workshop to have the car checked a week or so before departing. "Don’t leave the service until the last minute as you may need new parts that need to be ordered and could take a few days.” He also reminds drivers that every car should contain a breakdown kit with a flashlight in the event of an accident or breakdown after dark, and a fully charged phone for communication during emergencies. Dealing with bored and grumpy children on a road trip can be challenging. Ranft offers these helpful tips for happy, safe journeys: 1 Pack snacks in the car to reduce the amount of hours wasted at often crowded roadside restaurants along the way. Juice boxes, cereal bars and the South African favourite, biltong, are always a good idea for hungry little people. 2 Pack lots of water to prevent dehydration, and wet-wipes to clean sticky hands and spills. 3 Revisit the traditional car games of 21 Questions, Eye Spy and or Numberplate Cricket. 4 If these don’t appeal, smartphones and tablets are loaded with games to appeal to a range of ages, and with the increase in educational games, could even teach your child a new skill by the time you reach your destination. 5 Audio-books are also a great idea. Many home sellers are motivated to appoint estate agents because they know that the agency will carry the costs of advertising and marketing their property. However, says Berry Everitt, MD of the Chas Everitt International property group, they should be aware that they will probably have to spend some money themselves to ensure that their properties "present well to prospective buyers".
“Making a good first impression may mean that your property needs to be painted, for example, or that you need to make minor repairs, or just plant fresh flowers in the front garden. Buyers always pay more for a home that is clearly in 'move-in' condition, so it is worth taking the trouble to prepare your home for sale and give it 'kerb appeal',” says Everitt. He also suggests that when you award an agent a mandate to market your home, you provide as much information about the
property as you can, as well as documents like floorplans, title deeds and electrical certificates. “Then go through the marketing plan with your agent to make sure you know which types of buyer are being targeted and why and how the results will be measured and communicated to you. Your home is a major asset, and you don't want to be kept in the dark about buyer reactions and sale prospects,” says Everitt. Home sellers should also always be totally honest with their agents about any negative features of the property, as well as the positive aspects, says Everitt. “Tell your agent why you loved and bought the property, but also about things you would like to have changed and the alterations you did make.” “All this information will help the agent be better prepared to handle any objections, and to emphasise the positive features of your home to prospective buyers,” he says. When it comes to show days, Everitt says most sellers know that dead flowers, dirty floors, the smell of cigarettes, unmade beds, unwashed dishes and animal hair and odour can dampen any potential buyer's enthusiasm just as quickly as cracks in the wall or missing roof tiles, and will accordingly make
sure that everything is 'spick and span'. “But prospective buyers may well ask to view the property at other times, so it pays to keep it in 'show condition' as long as it is on the market, and one of the best ways to do this is to remove all non-essentials and personal photos and mementos,” says Everitt. “Pack them away out of sight, or even in a separate storage facility, where they can await removal to your new home. This will make it much easier to quickly clean and tidy up every morning and make sure the property is presentable if your agent needs to bring a buyer round during the day or after work.” www.news24.co.za
