Lydenburg,CNR Voortrekker & Viljoen Str, 013 235 2381, Stephen: 079 500 4597 www.

Nobody is cleaning anymore

’n Bejaarde dame in Maraistraat se oprit lê al vir weke vol riool. Daar was nog rioolgevalle in Maraistraat.

As a newspaper we are determined to be unbiased about issues and report on evidence. Thus, it is no hardship to point out these three individual photos to act as some proof that everything in Lydenburg has come to a standstill. Sewerage overflowing in people’s yards, in the streets, trash bags scattered everywhere and the streets are filthy and dirty. That does not even bring the potholes into the picture. Can the Thaba Chweu Municipality please tell us what they are going to do about any of these issues - we are dumbfounded by their lack of care.

'n Ander goeie Afrikaanse woord is kaggelk*k. Koop se gat is groot.

Parolees give back to the community We want to create opportunities where v a r i o u s stakeholders defined as victims of crime, those affected personally, their families, communities, community-based organisations, nongovernmental organizations, religious and

Children waiting for food parcels outside the Shalom Church Centre on Sunday.

THE Shalom Church Centre at Coromandel, outside Lydenburg had the privilege to host Correctional Services on Sunday. Four offenders on parole came to talk to the congregation about their crime, drugs and the healing process after being in jail. It is part of the focus to bring victims of crime, offenders and communities together in a safe space where relationships can be restored and f o r g i v e n e s s s o u g h t . It is call a Victim-Offender Dialogue. The World Prison Brief currently places South Africa in the top ten in terms of our inmate population, and our rate of imprisonment is the highest in Africa. Crime originates in the community, and, therefore, the community should not only be an important role-player in reporting and preventing crime, but also, along with other role-players, in taking coresponsibility for the rehabilitation and reintegration of the offender into society. To this end, the DCS is embarking on Victim-Offender Dialogues. The main thrust of this programme is to keep as many people as possible away from imprisonment through reconstruction of family units and community systems, as well as victim support and empowerment, while pursuing the rehabilitation of those already incarcerated through wellmanaged rehabilitation programmes. Correctional Services said the victim must be at the centre of corrections. “The objective of the Victim-Offender Dialogues is to put the victim back at the centre of the corrections system, as the victim is directly, and personally affected by the criminal act of the offender. Equally, the offender must be given an opportunity to reflect on his or her wrongs and request forgiveness.

l

spiritual bodies, educators, councillors and local leaders, will assemble together with offenders with a single purpose to rebuild our communities ravaged by crime. We want to reinforce corrections programmes through music, reading for redemption, creative literature, the arts, cultural events, heritage renewal events, sporting events, formal education and acquisition of skills, economic renewal through cooperatives and enterprise development, spiritual growth and selfcorrecting interventions, among others. The trilogy of victim, offender and community must play a leading role in the implementation of the Victim-Offender Dialogues as corrections is a societal responsibility, said the Minister.

Victim Offender Dialogue (VOD) is a process in which the victim of a crime, or the surviving family members, and the offender who committed the offense meet face-to face in a safe and secure setting. For certain victims/survivors of severe violence and violation, the facilitated VOD process can provide a pathway to a sense of further healing and further justice. Though this may not be for every survivor, the experience of talking directly with the offender who committed the violence or violation can enable survivors to give full voice to some of the pain and trauma they have experienced. VOD is not about forgiveness or reconciliation – unless that is absolutely and unequivocally what the survivor wants it to be about. The primary objective is for the survivor to feel heard, and for the offender to fully understand the effects of what he or she has done.

A wise man once quipped: Creativity is contagious. Pass it on. Albert Einstein certainly knew what he was speaking about, and when it comes to encouraging creativity and imagination in our youth, just think of the untold treasure, waiting to be discovered! This is one of many reasons why READ Educational Trust is particularly encouraged to talk about the annual READ Word Warrior Competition: a platform used to promote literacy, reading and the art of creative writing among young South Africans. Open to learners from the ages of nine through sixteen, the 2018 READ Word Warrior Competition requires entrants to write a fiction story incorporating a colourful character, Detective WW Inkomba. ('Inkomba' means 'clue' in Zulu and Xhosa). Our Word Warriors are required to produce a Fun, Fact-finding (FFF) mission that draws readers in, and captivates them right up to the very last word! The entry form is filled with tips and questions aimed at getting those creative juices flowing and bringing out the best in our budding Agatha Christies! All good detectives must be wondering what's in it for them? Not only will their work be showcased on the READ website; the winner will receive a R1000 cash prize,

and their school will receive R5000's worth of books! Last year's Word Warrior Competition drew a host of interesting entries and READ is pleased to announce that the READ Word Warrior of 2017 is Lolo Legoabe from Boskop Primary School! The 2017 Word Warriors had to describe their idea of 'My Treasure', and Lolo gave us wonderful insight into her family of five … always there for each other, no matter what they face in life! “This is one of many vehicles we use, to harness that very weapon our patron the late Nelson Mandela was passionate about: education,” Lizelle Langford, PR and Fundraising Manager at READ Educational Trust, explains. “Together we can sharpen the literary skills of South Africa's future leaders. A noble cause and one that is worthy of supporting every step of the way!” For more information about the 2018 READ Word Warrior Competition, contact READ Educational Trust on 0872377781, or visit www.read.org.za. THE first half of 2018 has come and gone. So, what was South Africa’s best-selling vehicle of the first six months of the year? Well, locally built vehicles absolutely dominated the list, with the Toyota Hilux topping the charts for the first half of 2018, racking up nearly 20 000 registrations. Break out the calculator and you’ll find out that this is some 4 763 units ahead of the second-placed Ford Ranger. The Volkswagen Vivo grabbed the final spot on the podium with nearly 14 000 registrations to its name, some 2 249 units ahead of its fourth-placed sibling, the regular Polo. The evergreen Nissan NP200, which still has the half-tonne bakkie segment all to itself, placed fifth with more than 9 500 units registered. The Toyota Quantum placed sixth, with Toyota’s combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (the brand reports an overall figure rather than individual model sales) close behind in seventh, which itself was 482 units ahead of the Isuzu KB in eighth. The Toyota Fortuner found itself in ninth, while the Hyundai Grand i10 and Toyota Etios (the only two on this list, bar the Auris, not built here in South Africa) grabbed the final two spots. SA’s 11 best-selling vehicles in the first half of 2018: 1. Toyota Hilux – 19 842 2. Ford Ranger – 15 079 3. Volkswagen Polo Vivo – 13 974 4. Volkswagen Polo – 11 725 5. Nissan NP200 – 9 567 6. ED: Do a bit more math. Toyota has sold 48 280 vehicles. The other 5 manufacturers in the top 10 has sold a combined 63 976 vehicles. From the 11th spot onwards figures get very low. So, Toyota SA sells probably more than 40% of all vehicles in this country.

THIS week’s petrol price increase might get car owners taking a serious look at their fuel consumption. However, your idea of how much fuel your car uses might be way off the mark. This is according to Wesley Procter, GM at used car retailer getWorth, who says that when it comes to fuel consumption, there are three versions of the truth - namely what the manufacturer claims, what your car’s instruments tell you, and how much fuel your car actually uses in real life. "It is very common to find that the amount of fuel you’re actually using is significantly different than your car’s manufacturer-claimed consumption," he explains. He goes on to say that the issue is partly technical because it is difficult for a laboratory test to replicate real-world driving conditions. However, Procter says that the manufacturers also have huge incentives to declare as low consumption as possible. "The Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal has shown that measurement methods can be gamed. With the fuel consumption test, there’s no need to break the rules to achieve an edge – the engineers know the specific parameters and can optimise the car’s design to score well under those specific conditions. Move out the specific conditions of the lab test, and fuel consumption quickly deteriorates," he says. He says that the UK website HonestJohn gathers actual fuel consumption measurements from a community of thousands of users and compares them to claimed values. "They gathered the data for hundreds of different models and found that the average car uses 20% more fuel than its claimed consumption which is pretty dismal," Procter adds. Other studies concur. He says that the Automobile Association of Australia recently commissioned independent real-world tests and found a similar result. "It reported that the cars tested used 23% more fuel than the claimed consumption and one car used a staggering 59% more." As for the fuel consumption claimed by your car’s instruments, he says that this might also be far off the mark. "A car’s fuel computer is one of its least accurate accessories because there are considerable engineering challenges to measuring fuel consumption in real time." Procter says that it is not difficult to test how much fuel your car actually uses in real-world conditions. • Run your fuel down until your tank is half-full or less. • Then fill up your tank to the brim and re-set your fuel counter and odometer (or write down your mileage). • Drive until your tank is again less than half-full and fill it to the brim again. Now you know how many litres you’ve used and how many kilometres you’ve travelled. • Divide the litres by the kilometres, multiply by 100, and you have litres per 100km. • Now compare that to what your car’s instruments measured for that same distance and what your car’s claimed consumption is. "It’s best to repeat this exercise several times to even out the measurements. You may be surprised at how large the difference is. And naturally, the actual consumption is typically higher than what the manufacturer or your instruments claimed. Official testing methods are changing and hopefully the new crop of tests gives more realistic results. But as long as there are tests, there will be gaming," he advises. wheels24.co.za

Remme is uitstekend. Gaan kyk gerus by Mc Gee Ford. Andre Coetzee.

THE winter months bring with them freezing cold temperatures that threaten our health, and the health of our garden plants. Frost can kill off beautiful plants in a matter of hours, or at the very least, severely damage them. When the sun is up, plants and the soil absorb the heat it generates. When the sun goes down, however, both plants and soil rapidly begin to lose the heat

they managed to store during the day. If it is an overcast night, however, the cloud cover will help insulate the earth and in turn, protect your plants. However, on freezing nights the soil's temperature and the temperature of the plants will drop rapidly. As the temperature drops to freezing and below, the moisture in the air condenses into dew that freezes on the surface of the plants. At freezing point, the damage to the plants will be minimal, however, if the temperature drops low enough, the cells in your plants will freeze and the plant will die. Protecting against frost If you are expecting frost, there are precautions that you can take that will help to protect your plants – these include: 1. If your plants have already been damaged by frost, don't remove or prune down the damaged areas, as the dead leaves will provide an excellent source of insulation for the tender stems and new leaves underneath. The dead bits can be pruned when the warmer weather arrives in late spring or early summer. 2. Construct a simple frame around plants that are sensitive to the frost, and then drape

a cover over the frame. The cover can be made from newspaper, hessian, material, cardboard, plastic tarps, bed sheeting or any lightweight material. This will create a tent for your plants, which will slow down the loss of heat rising from the foliage and the ground. Remember to remove the covers in the morning to let the light and fresh air back in and to prevent overheating by the sun. 3. You can drape materials directly over the plant if you don't have the time or the inclination to build a frame first, and secure it by gently tying the material in place. As such, be sure to choose a material that offers really good ventilation, like hessian, that will allow some light in and let the plant breathe easily. 4. Paint some plastic PET bottles black, fill them with water and then position them around your frost-sensitive plants. 5. Plants grown in pots are exceptionally prone to frost damage, and as such, it's always best to bring them indoors until the frost subsides. Alternatively, you could cover them with a tent as explained above, or bury the pot into the soil for added protection against frost. 6. If the frost is not so severe in your area, the

leaves won't be damaged, but any flower buds that would have emerged won't survive. So if your area experiences light frost, it's recommended to select plants that bloom later in the year. 7. Planting in protected areas, such as close to north-facing walls will also help the more tender plants survive frosty conditions. The walls absorb the heat generated by the sun all day, and this heat helps to keep the soil and the plants warm through the night. www.property24.com
