THE recent suicides of beloved figures; Professor Bongani Mayosi, American fashion designer Kate Spade and Celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain have left the world stunned by the effects of Suicide and Depression. All of these public figures were hugely successful and surrounded by family, friends and admirers. This reminds us of how prevalent Depression and Suicide's are all over the world. World Suicide Prevention Day is on Monday the 10th of September, and the SA Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) aims to raise awareness about the warning signs of Suicide, provide free online Facebook chat, as well as provide those that have lost a loved one to Suicide with a place to share, connect and get help. Suicide can devastate entire families and communities. We need to get people help before it is too late. There are 23 completed suicides in South Africa every day, and a further 460 attempted suicides every 24 hours. Most people are too scared to talk about the topic, or if they do they don't know what to say or how to help someone. Many people living with a Mental Illness experience stigma on a daily basis which makes it even harder to talk about, especially the widespread stigma of Suicide. SADAG receives 600 calls everyday from people who feel sad, depressed or have been raped, being bullied, or adults who have lost their jobs, people who are recently divorced, or struggling with financial issues, not being able to afford health treatment, or the loss of a loved one and becoming deeply lonely SADAG is here to help . SADAG runs the country's only Suicide Helpline (0800 567 567) 7 days a week from 8am - 8pm offering free telephonic counselling, information, referrals and crisis intervention. Also visit www.sadag.org for more information on Depression and Suicide Prevention.

Kontaknommers: 083 627 4397 / 065 801 7216

Have your will drawn up for free during National Wills Week Your last word when you die Death is an unpleasant topic that people would rather avoid. However, by planning for your death, you are giving life to the wellbeing of your family and dependents when you are no longer around. It can be seen as a final act of love and is not just for people with vast estates. South Africa's National Wills Week 2018 takes place between September 1721 to emphasise the importance of drafting a will as part of a comprehensive estate planning process. As a participant, Ecsponent is not only offering information, but also the opportunity for you to have your will drawn up for free. Importance of a will A will can take a lot of pressure off a bereaved family during the difficult time of a death. It removes the uncertainty and chaos by providing certainty about how your assets should be distributed. However, a will cannot be a mechanism to rule from the grave. Floris Slabbert, Director at Ecsponent Financial Services says that a will allows you some control over your assets after death instead of leaving the decision to the state. “A will can name an executor, distribute property, designate guardians and provisions for your children, stipulate how to settle debts and have a clearly defined plan to minimise the tax burden, among more. Dying without a will Dying without a will, or without a valid will, means your estate will be administered in terms of the Intestate Succession Act. The most obvious, most unsettling, aspect dying without a valid will is that you forfeit the freedom of deciding what should happen to your estate, which will then be allocated in terms of pre-determined legislated guidelines. This is also a risk when people fail to update their beneficiaries following important life events, like a death or birth in the family or a divorce. ” If you are married and pass away, your assets will be awarded to your spouse in terms of the Act. If you have children, your estate will be divided and shared between your spouse and children. The state, however, decides on this split,” says Slabbert. Without a will, it may also take a much longer time for an executor to be appointed by the state. An executor is responsible for making sure that all your debts have been settled and all remaining assets are distributed according to your wishes. “Without a will, you will have no say in choosing the right person to carry out this crucial role of ensuring your loved ones are treated fairly,” he adds. Slabbert adds that there may also be additional costs associated with distributing your belongings in the absence of a will. Without your clear instructions as a guide, conflict among loved ones is also more likely. A will cannot be drawn up if no estate planning is conducted In addition to creating confusion, dying intestate can also create tax implications that reduce your loved ones' inheritance. Slabbert says that professional estate planning is essential before compiling your will. “There are many considerations to take into account. For example, many people specify that their assets must be preserved for their children in a testamentary trust. However, they do not take the cost of maintaining such a trust into consideration. This can amount to significant figures and is best addressed during the estate planning phase.” Exemptions Neither estate duty nor capital gains tax is payable on any part of an estate bequeathed to a living spouse. There are also further capital gains tax exemptions if you do not leave your estate to a living partner (surviving Spouse). A rebate of R 300 000 is provided to a natural person in the year of their death. “Also, there are very clear rules and conditions governing the tax implications of annuities, pay-outs from life assurance policies and lump sums from retirement funds. There are also deductible expenses, such as the funeral cost, and deductible liabilities, such as certain debts. Navigating this terrain requires a clear planning process underpinned by a thorough understanding of estate duty tax and holistic financial planning,” says Slabbert. An estate planning professional will point out the finer details of these exemptions that apply to you. With professional help and advice, the entire process becomes manageable and you can have peace of mind that your loved ones will be looked after in a way befitting your wishes. To celebrate National Wills Week, Ecsponent will be offering the drafting of free wills during September. Do not hesitate to contact us to have your will drawn up free of charge. Phone them at 011 083 7735.

Pompies Letwaba from Lydenburg writes: THABA CHWEU Municipality has over the years been limping from one terrible blunder to the other because of an arrogant attitude. An attitude of empty pride and general lawlessness, which has reduced us to a banana municipality. An attitude that despises wisdom and enshrines a policy of humiliating a pool of elite intellectuals from both black and white communities for prudent advice must not be tolerated. This arrogant demon is called management by fear. In my state of the province address, I did everything humanly possible to emphasize the importance of municipal by-laws. Municipal by-laws are important in regulating the actions of a particular community for the sake of peace, tranquillity and economic development, truly speaking and without fear and prejudice, our town is a ''varkhok''. The entire Lydenburg town is in the hands of careless and irresponsible foreign nationals destroying our town in the name of illegal business and profit. A large number of these people are absolutely careless and disrespectful to the well being of our town and environment. I have personally engaged the municipality about calling them to order by instructing them to sweep the frontsurrounding areas of their dirty shops and avoiding urine spillage. It is extremely bizarre that this abomination in the form of dirty stagnant water, hair wigs and littered condoms, are a normal way of life. My fellow countrymen, I am profusely bleeding from this barbaric behaviour by some of these proud drug addicts now selling modified nyaope to our primary school kids.

These undocumented foreign nationals must be repatriated to their respective countries without delay and police favouritism from them be reported to a higher authority without delay. The second challenge is a demon of loud music which is destroying the eardrums of the elderly and subjecting them to a painful world of restlessness. It is brutally humiliating how we have lost respect for one another without any sense of remorse to our shift working employees and many bereaved families conducting night vigils. The failure to respect church services by playing loud music right at the door-step of the holy alter is a worrying factor. This behaviour must never be an acceptable pattern. A good friend of mine got evicted at the ''HEADS COMPLEX'' because of this stubborn demon. Before accusing our brothers and sisters of racism, may we conduct or do the so called self introspection and take full responsibility of our actions before blaming the victims. Let us go back to our roots and revive the principle of love and respect. The third challenge is the mushrooming of unmonitored spazashops, meant to kill local businesses and for instance supplying expired food. A huge percentage are selling food and the same dirty spaza shops are used as bedrooms and toilets. Gogo selling peanuts and bananas to raise her orphaned grand children is forced to close shop. Ganging up against an innocent ''Gogo'' by lowering prices is a cruel and unfair business practice. Spaza shops in the whole of Thaba Chweu must be regulated.

Code red for retinal blindness World Retina is the start of Eye Care Awareness Month in South Africa. Retina South Africa is calling a CODE RED during this week to support the Screen for Life project to save both vision and lives. We live in the midst of an unprecedented epidemic of diabetes. Unfortunately, signs of the disease may not manifest until late in the disease process. Treatment at this stage is less effective and more expensive. People affected by complications often complain that they wish that they had known of their risk before the complications happened. This would have given them a chance to change their lifestyle in time to prevent further damage. Technology is available to predict risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, amputation and blindness many years before these happen. This can be done by taking a
photograph of the retina with a special camera. The eye is literally a window to health. The Screen for Life Charter has been launched to provide a common unifying cause for a national screening programme that will significantly reduce the impact of the diabetic epidemic on the South African population. It is supported by a coalition of screeners, providers of medical care, funders, corporates, NPO's and people living with diabetes and their families. Retina South Africa is a proud signatory to the Charter. The founding statement for the charter is: “We believe that nobody should lose life, limb or go blind without being afforded the opportunity of prior warning available by photo-screening.”
Anyone with Diabetes or elevated blood sugar levels should request a retinal fundus photograph from their Eye Specialist, immediately. Claudette Medefindt, Head of Science for Retina South Africa says, “Retinal vision loss such as Diabetic Retinopathy [DR], Age related Macular Degeneration and Inherited forms of retinal dystrophies are some of the major causes of blindness worldwide. Diabetes Type 2 may be preventable through diet and lifestyle changes. The latest research indicates that these life style choices are also one of the most important risk factors for Age Related Macular degeneration. Screen for vision- screen for life.” For more information go to: www.retinasa.org.za and www.screenforlife.co.za

PEUGEOT South Africa has confirmed that the latest seven-seater 5008 will debut on the local market later this year in turbodiesel guise.

We are stockholders of the following tyre brands
The seven-seater model (which has in this latest generation – revealed as long ago as September 2016 – morphed from a people-carrier to something more akin to an SUV) is due to launch in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2018, slotting in at the very top of the French brand’s local range, above the 3008. According to Peugeot SA, the 5008 will arrive in 2,0 HDI form, fitted with either a six-speed manual or sixspeed automatic transmission. This oil-burner churns out 110 kW and 370 N.m, and is likely to be offered in frontwheel-drive form only. Petrol models are offered in overseas markets, but it’s not yet clear whether these will make it to local shores. Expect Active and Allure trim levels to be offered in South Africa, with a flagship GT Line derivative also on the cards. The seven-seater SUV boasts a second row comprising three (separately folding and tilting) perches and a third row with two removable pews. This adjustability results in luggage space that Peugeot says can be varied from 780 to 1 080 litres. Pricing, of course, has yet to be announced. carmag.co.za

Misconceptions regarding ADHD THERE are many misconceptions regarding ADHD. Here are some facts: 1st MYTH - IT IS NOT A REAL MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS : AD(H)D is recognized as a medical diagnosis in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V). ADHD has a biological root and is the result of an imbalance in the chemical messengers in the brain. 2nd MYTH - CHILDREN THAT ARE ALLOWED SPECIAL ADAPTATIONS BECAUSE OF ADHD, HAVE AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE : Imagine a woman in a wheelchair goes shopping. At the shop there is no ramp to allow access. The manager tells the lady to get up and walk if she wants to shop. Outrageous!! This is exactly what we expect from children with ADHD. We expect they should be more organised and less impulsive, but this is not possible without treatment and support. 3rd MYTH - ADHD IS OUTGROWN : No. The official statistics indicate that about a third of children will outgrow ADHD, but even then signs of the syndrome are evident in daily functioning. It is found that these adults/teenagers/children have adapted better or have a milder degree of the syndrome. That one third of the ADHD population can terminate treatment when they are grown doesn't necessarily indicate that they do not have ADHD, but only that they have possibly found a niche better suited to their functioning. 4th MYTH - ONLY BOYS HAVE ADHD : Statistics indicate three boys have ADHD for every girl diagnosed, but experts find that it is as common in girls as in boys. They often develop co-morbid conditions like anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse. Girls with ADHD are often excessively organised and perfectionists. They often present with emotional problems and under achieve. 5th MYTH - IT'S BECAUSE YOU ARE A BAD AND INCOMPETENT PARENT: If a child with ADHD shouts out in class or has difficulty waiting his/her turn or cannot sit still, it's not because he has never been taught that these behaviours are unacceptable. It is because they cannot control the impulses. The root of the problem is in the brain, not a lack of discipline. Overly strict parents that punish children for something they cannot control aggravates these symptoms. These children need professional support i.e. correct diagnosis, treatment (behavioural and medication) as well as child and parental support. 6th MYTH - CHILDREN THAT USE RITALIN AND OTHER MEDICATION WILL BECOME DRUG ADDICTS: NO! Medication treatment does not lead to addiction. The reverse is rather true where children with severe ADHD are not diagnosed correctly, they are more susceptible to drug addiction and abuse because they have difficulty with social relations and interactions, according to Prof Andre Venter. More than 50 years of ADHD medication has proved that it is effective and safe. Medication cannot eradicate ADHD, but decreases the symptoms. Your child will not become a zombie or addict when using the correctly prescribed medication by a specialist. 7th MYTH - PEOPLE WITH ADHD ARE DUMB AND LAZY AND WILL NEVER ACHIEVE IN THEIR LIFE : Jamie Oliver, well known chef; Will Smith, actor and singer; Michael Phelps, Olympic swimming hero; all indicate that they have ADHD. People often excel in spite of ADHD not as a result thereof. ADHD effects your functioning in some way or the other: your career, personal or social life. Make sure you receive support‌.and excel!! Sterkte vir die groot finaal
The teachers and students played netball against each other in a friendly game at Skhila Secondary School.
