Crime threat to SA farming community a grave concern CRIME threat to SA farming community a grave concern South Africa's agricultural sector continues to be threatened by a volatile security situation, and it is imperative that the government takes this seriously and acts appropriately. Agri-SA's recently released report on crimes affecting farms is 'a timely call to appreciate the scale of the criminal threat to the farming sector and to take appropriate action', says IRR project manager Terence Corrigan. The report - based on a survey of agriculturalists affiliated to Agri-SA's provincial bodies - showed that a shocking 70% of farms had experienced some form of crime in 2017. Stock theft was the most common crime, followed closely by theft of infrastructure and theft of equipment. Worryingly, some 25% had experienced robbery - a crime that is frequently associated with violence. The survey also found that a third of respondents claimed an increase in crime over the past three years. Says Corrigan: 'Agri-SA's survey is an invaluable attempt to quantify the perilous situation under which farming households exist. This applies to all farming communities, farmers, and their employees, of every race. Too often, voices both in the state and in society - not least the President - have tried to play this down. It deserves to be acknowledged for the very real and debilitating problem it is.' In addition, he notes, most farmers do not report all the crimes committed to the

authorities. 'The results here suggest a sense of alienation and frustration on the part of many farmers - reporting crime would be a pointless exercise, there is nothing that the police could do, and so on.' All in all, economic costs of crime in the agricultural sector amount to some R7.7 billion. The IRR argues that crime directed at farms - whether at property or at people - is a major strategic issue for the agricultural sector. Not only is it imposing very real costs on a sector that is under permanent duress, but it is a major disincentive to choosing a career in farming. If unchecked, this could prove detrimental to the long-term viability of the sector. 'The IRR has long argued that farm dwellers face an outsized threat,' says Corrigan. 'This is backed up by solid analysis. Official data shows that between 2012/13 and 2017/18 there were some 353 farm murders. AgriSA's study adds additional weight to this. But less remarked on is what that means for South Africa and the farming economy. Concerns about personal safety and the security of one's assets will drive people away from the industry, and dissuade others from entering it. The impact, particularly on smaller operators, will be corrosive over time.' With agriculture's contribution to the overall national value chain accounting for between 10% and 12% of GDP - again, according to the report - this is something that South Africa can ill afford, Corrigan says. One of the main challenges to this right worldwide is the continued shortage of teachers. There are an estimated 264 million children and youth still out of school globally, and according to the UNESCO Institute of Statistics, the world needs to recruit almost 69 million new teachers to reach the 2030 education goal of universal primary and secondary education. This 'teacher gap' is more pronounced among vulnerable populations – girls, children with disabilities, refugee and migrant children, and poor children living in rural or remote areas. Ek verwag teenkanting van die breë pubiek omdat ek hul kinders terroriste noem. Maar kan die ouers nie verstaan almal is daar om hul ete te geniet nie. Oor 'n babatjie wat huil kan ek nog simpatie hê. Maar ek kan ook sien hoe die ma kan opstaan van die tafel die baba rustiger maak en weer kom sit. Die ander kliënte moet ten minste 15 minute luister hoe daai kind skreeu. Ek kom uit 'n era waar kinders 'gesien en nie gehoor word nie.' By die huis kon ons na hartelus speel en die plek 'afbreek'. In die publiek het ons maniere gehad. Dit was nie eers nodig vir ons ouers om te sê bly stil nie. Voor die dae van tablette het ons monopoly saamgevat na die restaurant, inkleurboeke of leesboeke. Maatjies het saam rummy gespeel...maar ons kon onsself besig hou. Waar ek hier sit, het ek nooit in my lewe 'n pak gehad nie. Dus was my ouers se woord wet. Ek het genoeg respek gehad om myself in die publiek te gedra. Is dit hoekom ek by 'n restaurant eet? Ek vra maar net? Is dit hoekom ek 'n paar honderd rand spandeer. Om na julle kinders te luister gil. Trek die wenkbroue en sit terug. As dit julle was sou dit vir julle lekker gewees het? Of het die ouers siende blind en horend doof geword? Volgende keer betaal julle my rekening.

DIE Abundant Life Group van Dundee KZN het onlangs in Lydenburg getoer. Hulle het Wenakker, Estralita, Rusoord Tehuis vir Bejaardes en Soli Deo Gloria besoek en bederf met ’n poppekas. Neels Bothma, reptielkenner, het hulle kennis opgeskerp oor veral slange.

It is always a treat when the businesses in Lydenburg get involved with projects like ABL. The rest of the week the group ministered to Kleine Pikkewyne, Babbelkousies, refies,

Enkeldoorn, Riverside, Krappies en Krefies, Purple Pepper, Turning Tides and Tides Mini. A puppet show on the verandah at Spar drew attention and the group was invited to spend time with the youth at the Vollies on Wednesday evening. Kannabas and Kiepersol Homes for the elderly were also visisted and the group made some new friends. . Hannes van Ferromax het die groep meer geleer oor vuurwapengeskiedenis en verantwoordelike optrede en baie buskruit in verskeie formate is ontlont. 'n Bediening onder mense wat huisloos is, saam met die Bergloper het die groep laat besef daar is so baie seëninge om elke dag voor dankbaar te wees. Abundant Life hosted a morning with team building exercises at Lydenburg Leersentrum and it was a blessing to see how the kids grew in terms of leadership and team work skills as they moved through the program. Die groep het na ’n vol week by die Kromklip Vakansie-Oord gaan ontspan en Saterdag na die erediens weer na Krugersdorp en Johannesburg vertrek om hul toer voort te sit. Dankie aan elkeen in Lydenburg wat die toer moontlik gemaak het. Al die kos, die brandstof (Eco Petrolium/ Eben Marais), die uitstappies, die huise wat die groep ingeneem en welkom laat voel het asook die verskeie gemeentes. Hulle hoop dat verskeie saadjies gesaai is, al is dit soms so klein soos ’n mosterdsaadjie.

Farewell to a wonderful year

Prize giving at Tingeling Pre-school in Steelpoort Tingeling Pre-school held their prize giving event on 19 Oktober at the school. The children and parents were surprised with a display by four models in their special dresses that did a performance with the children to music. The highlight of the evening was the awarding of books, certificates, medals and trophies that the children received for all their hard work during the year. Mrs Lu-Ann Heyl (owner and principal) would like to thank the community for their loyal support for the past 12 years and thank you to Our Heavenly Father who made the evening possible. New Hyundai Atos coming to SA THE new Hyundai Atos – which was revealed wearing the Santro badge in India earlier in October 2018 – will ride on an updated version of the Grand i10’s platform. Speaking to indianautosblog.com, Puneet Anand, senior general manager for marketing at Hyundai Motor India, revealed the new budget hatchback would switch from the old Atos architecture to a version of the current Grand i10’s underpinnings. “Different platform from first Santro is used for the new Santro [Atos] and it is also sharing the platform with the Grand i10. That is the platform that has been given because we say it is a bigger, wider, [more] spacious car. It has more length, more width, and more wheelbase,” Anand told the publication. So, exactly how much smaller is it than the Grand i10? Well, we now know the new Atos measures 3 610 mm long, which makes it a full 155 mm shorter than the model under which it will slot. The Atos is 1 645 mm wide and 1 560 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2 400 mm (the latter just 25 mm down on that of the Grand i10). We have also since learned that the naturally aspirated 1,1-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine will offer 51 kW at 5 500 r/min and 99 N.m at 4 500 r/min, facilitating a top speed of 150 km/h. Transmission options will include a five-speed manual and an automated manual gearbox with the same number of cogs. Anand also revealed exports of the new Santro/Atos from India would commence in early 2019. “So, basically, South Africa is one market; we are also looking at the Latin American countries, we are also looking at Middle-Eastern countries and we are also looking

at some of the Southeast Asian markets,” he told indianautosblog.com. “Somewhere in the first quarter of next year [2019], after February, we will start exporting Santro to the global markets,” Anand confirmed. In September 2018, Stanley Anderson, Hyundai Automotive SA’s director of sales and operations, seemingly confirmed the Atos nameplate would make a comeback to local shores, saying the brand was aiming to bring in the new model during the first quarter of 2019 “for under R150 000”. THE Automobile Association has warned South African motorists to brace for further “daunting” fuel price hikes at the end of October. The AA warned the potential price hikes were “still daunting”, particularly for diesel users. Petrol prices were set for around 40 cents-a-litre increase, while diesel and illuminating paraffin could spike by 70 cents and 65 cents, respectively. The Association said the predicted increase to the price of petrol should be seen against the backdrop of the Department of Energy’s proposal to set a maximum price for the sale of 93 octane ULP and LRP fuels. The AA said the country could not “continue to be hammered by large fuel price hikes without severe economic knock-on effects”. “The effect on bus and taxi operations could lead to fare hikes which e x c e e d commuters’ ability to pay,” the AA said. “We again call on government to prioritise economic policies which inspire investor confidence. The latest Defender to receive such treatment has been named “Project Storm”. At the heart of this D110-based model is a LS3 6,2-litre V8 engine from the Chevrolet Corvette, allowing this Defender to boast 320 kW sent to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. A Wildwood sports braking system helps to bring this 4×4 to a halt, while a custom stainless-steel sports exhaust system has been fitted for a thunderous soundtrack. To ensure Project Storm looks as aggressive as it sounds, the Florida-based tuner has equipped this model (dressed in gloss Corris Grey paint) with a Kahn widebody kit. Adding stance are 20-inch OEM Stormer wheels, painted in black. Other features that contribute to the stealthy look are blacked-out LED head- and tail-lamps. For improved illumination, a large LED light bar has been mounted on the roof. To complement the exterior design cues, charcoal leather seats can be found inside. Carbon-fibre accents are present, too, while the steering wheel has been supplied by Momo. Project Storm also comes with an infotainment system, offering satellite navigation, Bluetooth and USB ports. A new sound system is also included. No pricing has been made available for this model. MITSUOKA has made a name for itself by creating some seriously left-field vehicles, such as the Jaguar MkII-inspired Viewt and the radical NSX-based Orochi sportscar. The Rock Star will be available only with Mazda’s 1,5-litre four-cylinder SkyActiv engine, which delivers 97 kW and 320 N.m of torque to the rear axle. The powertrain can, however, be optionally equipped with a limited-slip differential or a six-speed automatic transmission. Limited to a mere 50 units, the Rock Star’s price ranges from ¥4 688 200 to ¥5 183 600, which translates to R612 607 to R677 341 at the current exchange rate.
