A groundbreaking analysis of satellite data from 1 June to 31 August this year reveals the world's largest NO2 air pollution hotspots across six continents in the most detail to date. Greenpeace analysis of the data points to coal and transport as the two principle sources of air pollution, with Mpumalanga in South Africa topping the chart as the world's largest NO2 hotspot across six continents. Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) is a dangerous pollutant in itself and also contributes to the formation of PM2.5 and ozone, two of the most dangerous forms of air pollution. “It has been reported before that the Witbank area has the world's dirtiest air, and now this analysis of high tech satellite data has revealed that the Mpumalanga province is the global number one hotspot for NO2 emissions. This confirms that South Africa has the most polluting cluster of coal-fired power stations in the world which is both disturbing and very scary” said Melita Steele, Senior Climate and Energy Campaign Manager for Greenpeace Africa. Mpumalanga is home to a cluster of twelve coal fired power plants with a total capacity of over 32 gigawatts owned and operated by Eskom. The satellite data further reveals that the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria are also highly affected by extreme NO2 pollution levels which blow across from Mpumalanga and into both cities due to close proximity and regular eastwinds. The average wind directions over Johannesburg and Pretoria in the last 30 years on Meteoblue show that for about 28% of the year, the wind is blowing over Johannesburg from either ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, and S which are all directions where the winds would be blowing pollution from coal-fired power plants into the cities. This means that plumes of dangerous NO2 pollution regularly cover these cities and their 8 million people. “Because South Africa's coal-belts are hidden from view for the majority of South Africans, it can be easy to pretend that they don't actually exist. The reality is that coal extraction

and burning has devastating impacts on the people living in the area. This satellite data now confirms that there is nowhere to hide: “Eskom's coal addiction in Mpumalanga means that millions of people living in Johannesburg and Pretoria are also impacted by the pollution from coal” continued Steele. The list of the largest NO2 hotspots in the world includes well known coal-fired power plants in South Africa, Germany and India, and a total of nine coal power and industrial clusters in China. Cities such as Santiago de Chile, London, Paris, Dubai and Tehran also feature high in the ranking due to transportrelated emissions. “Air pollution is a global health crisis, with up to 95% of the world's population breathing unsafe air. South Africa is a significant global hotspot with its high concentration of coal power stations and its weak air pollution standards. Our Government urgently needs to come up with an action plan that protects millions of people, instead of dirty coal power stations,” continued Steele. Compared with many other countries South Africa has relatively weak Minimum Emission Standards (MES), that allow coal-fired power stations to emit up to 10 times more NO2 than allowed in China or Japan. Nonetheless, the majority of Eskom's ancient and highly polluting coal-fired power stations do not comply with these MES. In 2015 Eskom was granted a five year postponement from complying with MES. In 2018 Eskom has again applied for postponements for nitrogen oxides for 16 of its 19 power plants (including 14 coal-fired power plants and 2 liquid fuel power plants). “Coal kills, and Greenpeace strongly opposes any further postponements from complying with air quality regulations and demands that all coal-fired power stations that don't comply with the existing air quality regulations be decommissioned on an accelerated timeline”. “The Government should also set up an action plan, measures and deadlines to make sure that air pollution levels in high priority areas comply with existing regulations. This means that no new coal-fired power stations can be included in the national electricity plan (IRP 2018),” continued Steele. Greenpeace.com

DIT was met dankbaarheid en opwinding dat die NG Moedergemeente weer die Voortrekkerskooltjie kon heringebruik neem die afgelope Sondag. Die Voortrekkerskooltjie, wat sekerlik die oudste gebou in die dorp is, is verlede jaar Julie in 'n brand verwoes. 'n Baie mooi gesig ten spyte van die brand se verwoesting was die bossies blomme wat mense die Saterdagoggend na die brand voor die skooltjie neergesit het. Sondag is die gebou so ewe weer ingewy en 'n helder rooi lint is geknip om dit amptelik te maak. Dit is die oudste skooltjie in Mpumalanga en het die tipiese boustyl van die pionierstydperk in die Transvaal. Die eerste onderwyser was Meester Willem Poen. Hy het blykbaar in 1857 daar begin skoolhou. Hy is deur die Amsterdamse Geestelike Kommissie ontbied en het hierheen gevaar Ds. Christie Botha (leraar van die NG Moedergemeente saam met twee onderwysers Jan Willem Lydenburg), mnr. Hans Kelly (voorsitter van die Spruyt en Hendrik van der Linde aan boord restourasiekomitee) sowel as die heringebruiknemingskomitee en van die Vasco da Gama na Delgoabaai me. Huge smiles as Santa Shoebox spreads joy

HE Santa Shoebox Project originated in Cape Town in 2006 with a humble 180 shoeboxes. In 11 years it has grown in leaps and bounds, with the number of Santa Shoeboxes donated reaching a total of 762 594. The Shoeboxes are distributed to more than 1,000 recipient facilities each year, through more than 60 satellites around South Africa and Namibia. Lydenburg is one of these satellites. The success of the Project can largely be attributed to its personal nature. Donors give gifts to children whose name, ages and genders are known. The project is supported by an extensive network of volunteers across South Africa and Namibia – kind hearted people who give freely of their time, energy, expertise and personal funds, without remuneration. It also relies on the generous backing of various corporate sponsors pledging monetary or pro bono support . Many companies, involving their staff members pledge Santa Shoeboxes as part of their Corporate Social Investment programs as do schools as part of their curriculums and social awareness programs. In 2018 het die SSB projek gepoog om meer as 1 miljoen Santa Shoeboxes te versprei. Die boksies is deur privaat en korporatiewe instansies geborg, versier en gevul volgens 'n voorafbepaalde lys van minimum items. Daar word in elke boksie speelgoed, kledingstuk, skryfbehoeftes, seep, waslappie, tandeborsel en tandepasta en nog meer geplaas. In Lydenburg bestaan die Santa Shoebox span uit drie dames; Elize Swart (The Property Lounge) sameroeper, Adele Calitz (Litzburg Engineering and Civils) en Madelein Roode (Entheos Christian School). Entheos is tans die grootse borg in Lydenburg (meer as 100 van die totale 284 boksies is deur Entheos geborg). Hoërskool Lydenburg het op 'n redelike laat stadium in die jaar bewus geword van die projek en het self meer as 50 boksies geborg. Dit is 'n riem onder ons hart om te sien hoe ons jongmense inspring om kinders by te staan in Lydenburg. Stefannuti Stocs het hierdie jaar 500 leë bokse geborg wat dit moontlik gemaak het vir nuwe borge om visueel meer inligting te ontvang oor hoe die boksies sou lyk, wat daarin moet kom en hoe om te werk te gaan om dit te vul. Soms is dit ook moeilik om leë boksie te kry by skoenwinkels en nie almal skaf 'n paar nuwe skoene aan so naby aan die SSB inneem datum nie. Lydenburg het gepoog om hierdie jaar meer

as 500 boksies uit te deel, maar die span het net nie genoeg hande gehad om die droom te verwesenlik nie. Hierdie jaar is Santa Shoeboxes uitgegee by Kiwi Dagsorg, Kiwi laerskool, Enkeldoorn en by Soli Deo in Lydenburg self.

A time of excitement for the Festive Season Anti-Semities DIEGENE wat my goed ken sal weet ek het ’n besondere liefde vir geskiedenis. Dit is nie net die dorp en Lydenburg sin nie, maar ek doen gereeld navorsing as ’n onderwerp my opnuut interesseer. In Maart / April het ek weer oor die Tweede Wêreldoorlog begin lees. Eerstens die Slag van Barbarossa, (waar die Nazi’s Rusland probeer binneval het) en ek het weer Anne Frank gelees. Die jong Joodste dogter wat vir twee jaar saam met haar familie en nog ’n gesin in ’n fabriek weggekruip het. Maar ek het obsessief begin nalees oor die Joodse-stryd, volksmoord deur die Nazi’s, konsentrasiekampe, die moorde, afskuwelike haat, haglike omstandighede, kanibalisme... Ek verstaan hoekom baie mense na so ‘n oorlog nie meer daaroor wil praat nie, want hulle kan nie weer dit herleef nie. Die afgelope massamoord in Pittsburgh in ’n Joodse Tree of Life Sinagoge het die hele wêreld laat rou. Daar is 11 Jode doodgeskiet. Maar wat vir my die mees ironiese is, is dat Rose Mallinger, 97 jaar oud, ’n slagoffer van die Hollocaust is en ook doodgeskiet is. Dit na al die jare, sedert die einde van die Tweede Wêreldoorlog in Amerika, waar sy sou veilig wees. Om in hierdie rubriek te probeer opsom van die ses miljoen Jode en ander ‘undesirables’ wat in Europa vermoor is deur die Nazi’s, is net te wyd. Ek moes doelbewus my navorsing bietjie opsy sit omdat die lees oor die oorlog my nagmerries gegee het. Selfs in die dag. In 1936 het die Olimpiese Spele in Berlyn, Duitsland plaasgevind. Ek het toevallig ’n fliek gekyk oor Jesse Owens die afgelope naweek. Hy was ’n ster-atleet wat drie goue medaljes vir Amerika gewen het by die Spele. Omdat hy swart was het Hitler geweier om hom geluk te wens. Maar terwyl die wêreld die Olimpiese Spele gevier het, het die Nazi’s reeds Jode in konsentrasiekampe gehad en begin om hulle uit te honger. Die aan die begin van die oorlog is doodgeskiet, sommer in die treintrokke, tydens die Spele. Hoe kon die wêreld niks gedoen het nie? Hoe kan ons in 2018 terugsit met nog ’n Anti-Semitiese voorval sonder om daaroor te besin? ~ Michelle Boshoff

The financially viable, the politically connected tender man and the hard working class have already booked themselves in lavish five star hotels to say thanks to their bodies for carrying them throughout the year. Various church denominations throughout the country and as a well known tradition are to glide to their headquarters to praise and worship the wonderful name of our redeemer. The real essence of December 25 of each and every year is love and lots of love. Love is humble and refuse to be self serving and boastful. Love is gentle and caring for the sick and taking good care of the poorest and downtrodden generals of our communities, both black and white. The king of the jungle, Simba, does illustrate love by refusing to kill a new born calf and goes an extra mile by shoving the calf to its distraught and helpless mother. The sovereign lord gave us the spirit of brilliancy and dominion over the fish, birds and all animals on land. Out of anger and anguish, the world community has witnessed how my heart is pierced by men and women tremendously blessed by the same LORD we claim to praise, love and worship failing to share a bread with that poor fellow human being. Some people are poor to the core with their families ravaged by abject poverty with an obvious imminent threat of ''Mkhukhu Shelter'' falling during the darkest hour of the night. South Africa is perceived by the outside world as a Christian country and dubbed the ''rainbow nation'' with the capacity of helping each other. John chapter 3;16-''For GOD the father loved the world so much, that He elegantly passed the baton to His only begotten son Jesus Christ, that whoever believed in Him should not perish''. I am appealing to all God fearing persons to adopt a child, a family or an old age home for a decent meal and Christmas clothes. John Roos en gesin bedank almal JOHN Roos wat onlangs per helikopter van Lydenburg na Die Wilgers Hospitaal in Pretoria gevlieg is wil net graag die volgende mense bedank vir hulle onbaatsugtige hulp en bystand. OP 10 November 2018 bied Rehobot Gemeente vir die vierde agtereenvolgende jaar 'n geestelike konferensie aan. Elke jaar groei die belangstelling in hierdie dag en kom gesinne en mense van oor Mpumalanga en verder vir die dag b y m e k a a r. Gardening Tips and To-Do Lists for November October in the Garden Gardening is all about dreaming and seeing pictures in your mind, and then having the patience and energy to turn it into reality. If you dreamt, saw, and did it, the reality will be right in front of your eyes in a glorious October garden. If you did nothing of the sort, don't worry, but loosen your brakes! You are going to plant, feed, prune, pick, deadhead, water, harvest and keep an eye on pest and disease attacks. What to plant: Plant agapanthus for summer colour – check out some new releases, but also try out those with variegated foliage like 'Blue Zebra' and 'Summer gold'. Agapanthus trouble-shooting: If they do not flower as they should, the shade is too deep, bring them into more light! They are water wise, but definitely not 'plant camels'. Water them frequently and deeply. Lush leaves only, is an indication of a lack of

potassium which is necessary to set flower buds. Feed your plants now with a fertiliser like 3:1:5, Vigarosa or Rapid Raiser. Planning a new hedge? – plant Freylinia tropica, Carissa macrocarpa (Big Num-num) or Buddleja saligna (False olive).

General gardening management includes regular watering – early morning or late afternoon. Trimming azaleas to encourage new growth for next years blooms and also fertilising your cycads and cycas's with an organic fertiliser. Keep a look out for lawn caterpillars and mole crickets, they will start being active from now until February. Keep on feeding your hydrangeas to get them in top form for the Christmas season. While thinking about the holidays, you might as well start thinking about traditional flower colour in the garden too – what better than red salvias, snowy lobularia (alyssum) and fire engine red begonias. Hot tip: Petunias are insanely popular as summer bedding plants, but can it be planted in the same place every season? The answer is no! It is better to rotate certain annuals to prevent the build up of dominating pests or soil

pathogens. If you need a new lawn, sod it with instant lawn sods, but do not take short cuts with soil preparation. Dig the area over to remove all weeds and stones. Add copious amounts of compost and bone meal and rake smooth and level.
