leerder aan die Hoër Tegniese Skool Middelburg, is noodlotting beseer in die gru-ongeluk toe die bus in ’n ongeluk was naby Laersdrif, tussen Steelpoort en Middelburg. Die bus word gedeel deur ’n groep myne en behoort nie aan die skool nie. Volgens die Provinsiale Department van Vervoer Limpopo was daar nie ’n
ander voertuig betrokke nie en het die bus met skoolkinders omgeslaan. 13 ander leerders het ligte beserings opgedoen. Op sosiale media het medelye ingestroom na sy ouers, skoolmaats, familie en vriende. Die Highlands Panorama Nuus dra ook ons innige simpatie aan Gideon se geliefdes oor.

Detect job scams
SEVERAL job scams have been advertised on social media and other platforms. Students that have just finished school or other job seekers need to be vigilant when applying for a position and verify the company. The Department of Public Works has warned the public of a recent fraudulent scam about a 2019 internship programme. In a statement released on Monday, the department said the internship was purported to be advertised by the National Department of Public Works. “The Department would like to distance itself from this and would like to warn the public to be careful and not fall prey to these scams. The advert might look legitimate but it is not, the platform that is
used and the contents of the advert are all wrong. They are misleading and enticing unsuspecting prospective applicants,” the department said. Public Works and other government departments advertise through the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) website under Vacancies, as well as through national newspaper's vacancies or jobs sections and not through unknown websites. “When in doubt, members of the public should verify the authenticity of the adverts by contacting the National Department of Public Works Human Resources Recruitment representative, Muriel Magane at 012 406 1552,” read the statement.

WATER security in Lydenburg is fragile
WATER security in Lydenburg is fragile. As we are approaching the middle of January with significantly lower rainfall this season, the situation regarding sustainable water supply is questionable. The state of both the Sterkspruit (Lydenburg water source) as well as the Dorps river is dire. To date this season, there is almost no flow. According to rumours the new water takeoff installed at the municipal dam a couple of years ago is situated higher than the original takeoff point. If this is correct, it means that the full dam capacity might not be available during times of low supply. This needs to be confirmed or refuted by the relevant experts. The Lydenburg water works is fully dependent on electrical pumps to supply the high lying reservoirs. With current electrical supply issues, the water works is often without e l e c t r i c a l p o w e r. Standby engines (generators) were either too small or in a poor state of repair as the growth of town was not taken into account. Glencore thankfully attended to this issue a little more than a year ago and installed a new diesel generating unit at the water works. But it is not known whether it enables the entire pumping system to operate at full capacity. Whatever the correct circumstances surrounding water supply, the state of the river is the one sure indicator that we either have water, or that water is in short supply. Given all of the above, the prevalence of water pipes leaking and not being dealt with timeously is cause for concern. Despite water restrictions, people are still blatantly using sprayers on their lawns. Fire hydrants are opened to “relieve pressure� when water leaks are attended to, with thousands of water
running to waste. These issues need to be addressed. Water lines being worked on should be closed higher up, in stead of opening valves that waste water. This paper is inundated with complaints from the public regarding water quality, with dirty water clearly visible in some cases and with new rumours about pathogens in the water. Whatever the real situation is and whether there is truth in some allegations or not, is not the point. The point of this article is that the residents of Lydenburg / Mashishing must work very sparingly with available water and TCM must ensure, as its highest priority, that the management, distribution and maintenance of the reticulation system receives its urgent attention. Coupled to that, because it powers the system, serious intervention is required to stabilise and overhaul the town’s electrical supply. Andre Coetzee

Iemand het in die week vir my gesê: “Raak rustig!” Ek herhaal dit nou heeltyd in die stilte. Maar my musiek is partykeer so hard in die motor dat ek dit nie dan hoor nie. En dis wanneer ek begin jaag. Sies! Om te wag is nie hoog op my prioriteitslys nie. Stadige bestuurders ook nie. Betyds en laat is nie 'n grensgeval van vyf minute nie. Vyf minute later as op tyd, maak jou laat. Ons sing graag saam met Lukas Maree "die tyd gaan so gou verby, die tyd gaan so bitter gou verby." Michael Althusuler het 'n oplossing om tyd-weghol te keer: "Die slegte nuus is dat tyd vlieg. Die goeie nuus, jy's die vlieënier." COULD it be that recycling the water we have is the key to water availability relief for the Cape region – as opposed to imposing increasingly stricter and potential unviable water usage restrictions as well as costly desalination? SewTreat have put forward another option – the biological treatment and recycling of waste water. The Cape's worst drought in a century had the region's reservoirs and dams at record lows. The communities in the region are at severe risk of running out of water altogether while the allimportant agricultural sector has been plunged into crisis, affecting the local economy. With restrictions severely affecting residents, the situation remains dire. Treating sewage water and waste water for reuse is by no means a new concept but previously the methods used and the infrastructure construction needed to implement water recycling have made it a wonderful 'green' dream that no one could financially realise. “What businesses, schools and hospitals will start to realise is that recycling water by means of natural, eco-friendly, biological treatment methods is the best and most cost effective way to ensure water availability and security – and that it is now becoming a matter of life and death.” While the concept was unthinkable in a South African setting two years ago, it has been successfully done in numerous countries around the world for years. In 2014, three years into California's worst drought in over a century, the state's Orange County Water District (OCWD), established a pioneering waste water treatment facility that recycles used water – or sewage –
and returns it to the drinking supply. The plant's production expanded from 259 to 370 million litres per day which is enough for 850,000 people. Closer to home, Windhoek has been successfully treating waste water to drinking standards for the past 50 years. Most of the waste water produced by Windhoek's 300 000 residents is sent to the Goreangab waste treatment plant – the first stop in the city's pioneering water recycling system. The systems and technology have more than proven themselves – and far from being repulsed by the idea of drinking recycled sewage water, the residents have no complaints and are in fact proud of what they have achieved with the plant. Many call it Africa's origin story for water reclamation and potable reclamation, and the plant gets thousands of visitors from around the world who are keen to see where this all started way back in 1968. Businesses, organisations, residential estates, schools, retirement homes, retail spaces, farms and communities will likely be pursuing the installation of modular, biological waste water treatment plants in the year ahead because these systems can be implemented very quickly and at an affordable price. In fact the price comparison between re-cycling used and sewage water and desalination is staggering. “It is 100% possible to recycle both sewage and waste water to the point that it is safe for drinking. We are facing a major water crisis of epic proportions and it is time to recognise this process for the major contribution that it can make to water security.

Die “Dag van Groot Gebeure in Lydenburg” GEDURENDE die begin van die sestigerjare in die vorig eeu het veelvuldige ontwikkelings in Lydenburg gesorg vir 'n dag van merkwaardige gebeurtenisse. Op daardie dag het Sy Edele die Administrateur van Transvaal Mnr F.H. Odendaal ons dorp besoek waar hy ten eerste by die F.C. Braun akwarium gaan draai het om die fasiliteit by die Provinsiale Vissery Instituut amptelik te open. Na die amptelike opening het Mev Olive McGee die naamplaat ter ere van haar wyle vader Mnr F.C. Braun, visserypionier van Lydenburg, onthul. Op dieselfde dag het die Administrateur die Munisipale Sweefspoor by die hidro-elektriese kragstasie geopen. Die dag is afgesluit met die amptelike opening van die Lydenburg Olimpiese-standaard Munisipale Swembad deur Mnr C.H. Bauling, voormalige Burgemeester van Lydenburg. Ek blaai ook deur ou Munisipale dokumente wat dateer uit hierdie tydperk en sien dat die Munisipaliteit 'n paar dae voor hierdie datum die ingebruikneming van die hidro-elektriese kragsentrale asook die swembad op 10 Maart 1961 daargestel het. Na afloop van die verrigtinge is 'n “Vleisbraai” by swembad park om 5 n.m.” gereel waar inwoners van die dorp onthaal sou word. Die Raad wou egter vooraf weet hoeveel gaste daar sou wees en 'n lys is opgestel en tenders uitgesit vir boerewors en skaaptjops wat gebraai sou word! Die raad het 'n kwotasie van Lydenburg Butchery aanvaar vir 1000-1200 pond boerewors en ongeveer 100 pond se tjops met die spesifikasie dat die wors voorsien moet word in 1 pond stukke. Dit teen 'n koste van een shilling en agt pennies per pond vleis. Dus ongeveer R2-34 in vandag se terme, doen die somme, dit is spotgoedkoop! Tydens die verrigtinge is 'n pajamaresies gehou asook swemgala waar seuns en dogters o/12 vir 25 tree vryslag geswem het en daarna die o.16 kinders vryslag van 50 meter. 'n Worsresies, demonstrasies deur Pretoria swemmers en 'n duikvertoning is het ook deel uitgemaak van die feesvieringe. Vandag bestaan die Munisipale swembad nie meer nie en die huidige Spur en “Swembad Sentrum” is nou op die perseel geleë.

AS the market awaits Ford’s Range Raptor, it’s deeply ironic that South Africans have option on only one V6 diesel bakkie: VW’s Amarok. The Raptor, for all its fabled off-road racing suspension, is powered by a 2-litre diesel, with only four-cylinders and by early next year, there will be a second German V6 double-cab to make the case for Raptor ownership that much more tenuous. Mercedes-Benz’s X350d has been hugely anticipated. For many, the X250 bakkies are simply too closely related to Navara, powered by Nissan engines and shifting with Japanese gearboxes. If you desire true German mechanical engineering where it has always been most vaunted, up front, X350d can rightly claim to be the only ‘true’ X-Class. We sampled the range-topping Mercedes-Benz in the scorching European summer heat of the Ljubljana basin, ranging into the mountains which surround Slovenia’s capitol city. In appearance there is trivial difference between four- and six-cylinder XClass, save for the additional front quarter panel badging. Inside, too, you’ll hardly distinguish any changes – which is a pity, as the X-Class cabin is perhaps the bakkie’s greatest weakness. There are too many ergonomic compromises in terms of driving position and control touchpoints. Disappointing for a company such as Mercedes, which is steeped in traditional and usually committed to excellence. Where X-Class most certainly does not lack, is its 3-litre V6 turbodiesel engine. Boosting 190kW and 550Nm, it’s a lot more powerful than the X250’s 140Kw and 450Nm. Amazingly, the V6 X-Class only manages to be a few kilograms heavier than X250D, which means all that power converts to a generous margin of superior performance. Driving reality reflects the numbers, with X350d feeling every bit as quick as its 0100kph time of 7.5 seconds and 205kph top speed would suggest. Most impressive is the velvety power delivery. You hardly notice just how quickly X350d is increasing in tempo due to the quality of sound insulation Mercedes-Benz has applied to its cabin. The more powerful engine has really brought to the benefits of that coil-sprung rear suspension to justice and speed the X350d is reassuringly stable, although its bulk, at nearly 2.3t, does become evident in tighter corners – the kind of which you arrive at with a fair bit more speed than anticipated. Off-road ability is phenomenal and all South African X350ds will feature the 222mm ground clearance option with a fully lockable rear-differential and sophisticated

traction control too, making it effectively as accomplished a double-cab in the rough stuff as you could imagine. Due for local delivery early in 2019 with orders open now, pricing of the X350d has just been confirmed in South Africa but not the seven-figure listing we expected. If you like the mechanical underpinnings (except for the engine of course) rather buy the new Navara. It is essentially the same and much more affordable. The interior of the Merc is over the top and the air vents are horrible. I have driven Ford, Toyota, Isuzu, Amarok and Navara and they are all excellent. Local back up and service is very important and local dealers are all good, some perhaps a little better than others. Double cab choices always result in heated arguments like in the old days between Ford and Chev supporters. My entire family drove Fords. As always I swam upstream and drove GM products. I had an old sign that irritated many of my very good friends on my garage door which read: “This is Chevrolet territory, where on a quiet Sunday you can hear a Ford rust”. Those days are gone as the current vehicles are all of top quality. If you are about to spend half a million or more on a double cab, do yourself a favour and take them all for a decent test drive. You will be surprised! Talk to owners and question them about running costs, service costs, the costs of new tires etc. For each one inch the wheels are bigger you can add R 1 000 to the cost of one tire. Tire profile is very important with our road and off-road conditions. Where possible rather opt for a 16 inch rim with lots of rubber. Andre Coetzee.

THE picture shows one of two rugged, adventure-based concepts that Suzuki will be taking to the Tokyo Auto Salon next week. Based on Suzuki’s adorable 4×4 (a Top Gear Magazine Award winner, no less) the Jimny Sierra bakkie maintains the same boxy silhouette but has had the back seats ripped out and an angle grinder applied to the roofline to make room for a practical bed. More than that, they’ve swapped out the front grille and stamped an old school Suzuki logo on it, given it chunkier wheels and tyres, flared arches, some hooks to drag it facefirst out of a bog and some LED spotlights at the back of the cab. Put simply, it’s awesome. Bakkies not your thing? No worries. There’s also the Survive SUV Concept, a jackedup more Bear Grylls-y variant of the cutesy cut-price G-Wagen alternative. Maintaining all of its roof (but now with roller shutter rear windows), it’s been built for the wilderness and has more clearance, allterrain tyres, skid plates and an exoskeleton roll cage that doubles as a set of roof racks to fill with off-road clobber.
