Today Mr Loots announced his decision to go on early retirement, to the learners and staff, due to medical reasons. Mr Loots had a triple heart bypass 18 years ago at the age of 39. God granted him the honour of being principal at 2 schools after this. The last 8 years at LHS have been a wonderful experience to both Mr and Mrs Loots. He urged the staff and learners today, to keep building in unity and to build on the achievements already accomplished. The very audible school anthem and war cry that followed clearly shows this unity.

Nie ek nie. Nooit. Dit sal nie gebeur nie. Ek haat dit. Ek verag dit. Slaan my eerder met ’n nat vis. Druk my kop onder die water in die bad. Alles wat kan keer om die gehate RSG, Radio Sonder Grense, te luister. Ek het dit altyd verbind aan my ouma-hulle en my ma wat heeldag die radio aangehad het as mens net na die stilte wil luister. O, en die aanbieders is so teatraal, vervelig, dweperig. Soek ’n sinoniem vir hierdie bogenoemde woorde en ek het dit gebruik. En daar word ek toe met die spreekwoordelike nat vis geslaan. Die RSG vis. En dit stink nie. Ek wil van my kop afgaan as die radio af is wanneer ek in die huis instap. Daai doodse stilte wil my mal maak. Ek kan tv kyk of lees of na my selfoon kyk... maar RSG moet tergelyke tyd aan wees. Toe sê ek vir Marius, ’n goeie vriend. Maar dit maak sin. Dit het my getref so ‘n week na my ma se dood. Die huis is so stil. En sy het altyd radio geluister. Dis natuurlik my sielkundige verklaring en diagnose vir die probleem. Want ek kon glad nie verstaan hoekom ek so aanklank spesifiek by RSG gevind het nie. En toemaar, ek is nog die eerste persoon wat Lindsay Lohan se Beachclub sal kyk en Beyonce se nuutste en self Kanye West sal luister. So ek het nog nie so groot weg van moederaarde afgeklim nie. Ek weet nou meer dinge. Dis indrukwekkend wat jy kan ‘optel’ met die radio so in die agtergrond en dan kan lag vir mense wat eng is. Maar die radio het my vriend in ’n doodse, baie stil huis geword. Ek het Sondagaand vir Ruby gevra toe sy met haar hondegesig so diep in my oë kyk... wil jy nie maar begin praat nie, want dis so stil. Dis ‘n stilte wat in jou ore zoem. Toe onthou ek, die radio is nie in my ma se kamer aan nie. Siedaar... daar is toe weer lewe in die huis en Ruby slaap verder. ~ Michelle Boshoff

My vrou is 73 en sy het nog langer gewag. Ek weet van 'n oom en tannie wat oor die 80 is wat daar gestaan het vanaf 07:00 tot 15:00. Hulle het maar stoele saamgevat en so vorentoe geskuif. Soos ek sê daar is mense wat vanaf 3-, 4- en 5-uur gaan om te verhoed dat daar nie menigte mense is nie. Die bottelnek lê eintlik by die oogtoetsery. THE annual Malaria Spraying campaign in Limpopo is underway. Last year 16 000 people contracted malaria in Limpopo and about 1% of them died. More than 1 million houses will be sprayed for the next six months at a cost of R100 million. The campaign started at Folvhodwe village in Vhembe, close to Zimbabwe. 42 teams are deployed along the Zimbabwe and Mozambique borders, at the Burgersfort mines and along the Lephalale River. Similar campaigns are also held in Eastern Mpumalanga and Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The Limpopo MEC for health led the campaign on Tuesday. Limpopo Health MEC, Phophi Ramathuba says, “When people start feeling sick they
must not hesitate to go the clinics. The symptoms are the same as for flu. It is fever, headaches, body aches and vomiting. Don't self-treat, when you realize it is something else than flu it might be too late.” During the last malaria season Joseph Kwinda, his wife Gloria Mulovhedzi and both their children contracted malaria at the same time. Gloria says, “My husband was sick first and eventually I convinced him to go to the hospital. They found that we all have malaria. It was very difficult because nobody could take care of anyone else. The house was also left unoccupied for more than a week.” Dr. Ramathuba also appealed to communities to cooperate and not refuse team's entrance to their dwellings.

TOYOTA South Africa Motors has revealed initial details of the new RAV4 range that is scheduled to launch locally in March 2019. The local line-up of the fifth-generation version of the Japanese brand’s popular SUV will comprise five derivatives at launch. As we reported late in 2018, no diesel powertrains (the outgoing range includes a 2,2-litre oilburner) will be offered. Instead, the engine line-up will comprise a 2,0-litre four-cylinder unit (with new outputs of 127 kW and 207 N.m) and a 2,5-litre powerplant (now churning out 152 kW and 250 N.m) – both naturally aspirated petrol motors. In base GX trim, the smaller mill will be available in six-speed manual guise or mated with a continuously variable transmission (both front-wheel drive), while in flagship VX specification only a CVT will be offered. In addition, the 2,0-litre will come in all-wheel-drive flavour, specified in mid-range GX-R trim (which includes an enlarged front grille, skid plates and wheelarches) with a CVT. Interestingly, the sole 2,5-litre derivative (in range-topping VX form) will employ a conventional eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission, sending drive to all four wheels. This mechanical all-wheeldrive arrangement features Toyota’s first dynamic torque vectoring system. Nine exterior colours will be offered for the GX and VX trim levels, while the GX-R derivative will be available in four standard hues and one optional colour. GX variants will furthermore feature black fabric upholstery and 17inch alloys, while GR-X and VX models will ship standard with leather and larger wheels (18-inch items in the case of the former and 19-inch alloys for the latter). GX and GX-R derivatives will boast full-size spare wheels and a claimed 492litre luggage capacity, while the VX’s temporary spare sees boot space climb to a claimed 572 litres. NISSAN South Africa has quietly added a new, tech-filled flagship derivative to its Micra range, expanding the local line-up to four variants (in addition to the single Micra Active model). Priced at R299 900, the newcomer (called the Acenta Plus Tech) commands a R16 000 premium over the Acenta Plus variant. That extra cash buys you a smattering of big-car features, including the Japanese firm’s “Intelligent Around View Monitor” (with moving object detection), blind-spot warning, intelligent forward emergency braking and keyless entry (with push-button start). The range-topping model furthermore benefits from rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, auto-folding side-mirrors and an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror. Other standard features shared with the Acenta Plus include 17-inch alloys, a leather steering wheel, a seven-inch infotainment screen, six airbags and the “Energy Orange” interior pack (on selected colours). As with the three other derivatives in the local Micra range, the Acenta Plus Tech model draws its urge from a turbocharged 0,9-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which sends 66 kW and 140 N.m to the front axle via a five-speed manual gearbox. BACK in July 2018, a rumour surfaced suggesting Ford was developing a new small unibody pick-up that could effectively serve as a long-awaited replacement for the half-tonne Bantam. And now the Blue Oval brand’s president of global markets has confirmed a baby bakkie is indeed happening. According to Automotive News, Ford’s Jim Farley – who earlier revealed the brand would offer both “battery electric” and “hybrid” versions of its popular F-Series range – said is “investing in more affordable versions of our [pick-up] truck business”. “You can expect new nameplates below where we compete today,” Farley said, according to the US-based publication. Since the smallest pick-up built by Ford at the moment is the Ranger (itself only recently reintroduced to North America), Farley’s comments lend serious weight to rumours regarding the development of a Focus-based bakkie. So, what would it be called? Well, in August 2018, Ford filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the “Courier” badge, so that seems the most likely answer. Still, if the baby bakkie does indeed find its way to local shores, there’s at least a small

chance Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa would attempt to leverage the Bantam name. As a reminder, the Bantam launched in South Africa back in 1983 and went out of production locally at the end of 2011. It was also offered as a Mazda wearing the Rustler badge. The Prince walked away unscathed but two people in the other vehicle were injured. The incident has sparked a global debate about whether, or when, elderly drivers should be forced to surrender their keys. There is currently no legislation prohibiting the elderly from driving in South Africa. Some European countries require that drivers over the age of 70 prove their fitness every three years. "There's no evidence showing that elderly drivers are any more of a hazard on our roads than anyone else," says Jeff Osborne of Gumtree Automotive. "Stripping someone of their independence and mobility due an arbitrary age limit is extremely unfair. Everything you need to know about managing your municipal account IF you're a first-time home owner, you may find your municipal account more than a little confusing. You might not be entirely sure what the terminology actually means, what you're being charged for and why. Let's start with why you receive a municipal account… If you own a house or property and have access to electricity, water and waste removal services, you should receive a monthly bill from your local municipality for these various services, as well as the taxes you pay on your property. While no two municipalities issue identical bills or always use the same terminology, the basic information remains the same. Always check your account and ensure that the details are correct. There are five main charges on your bill namely: · Water - If you are on a metered account, all domestic water consumers receive the first
six kilolitres of water consumed per month for free. Thereafter a stepped tariff per kl is charged by the council based on your metered water consumption. If you are on pre-paid water, there will be no water usage charge on your municipal account. · Sewerage or waste water. · Electricity - if you are on a metered account, you will receive a charge for this based on how much electricity you used. If however, like most new households, you are on prepaid electricity, there will be no electricity usage charge on your municipal account. · Refuse removal of solid waste. · Rates and Taxes, also called assessment rates. The account will give you a detailed breakdown of the total amounts payable including: · Basic services, also called availability charges - Availability charges are a fixed amount charged to recoup the capital costs of delivering water, electricity and sewer connections to your property.
· Itemised consumption and adjustments for water and sanitation and refuse collection Water is charged based on how much you use each month. If you are on prepaid electricity there will be no electricity charge on your account. Make sure that you provide the correct billing address, and if you do not receive the statement every month, you need to enquire at council to rectify this. Remember to pay an amount every month even if you have not received your account to ensure that you don't end up with a huge bill to settle once your account is finally sorted out. What happens on a property bought off plan at registration? Once the council completes the valuations, you will be switched to the residential tariff. At this point the council will do a 'rates adjustment' which means they work out the difference between what you paid under the vacant land tariff versus what you should have paid under the residential rate, which is usually slightly lower.
Typically, if you were paying the higher vacant land tariff you will receive a refund or credit on your account. You will also receive a small assessment rebate which all property owners receive the exact amount varies between different councils. ·Availability Charges for water, electricity and sewerage connections.

Enjoy a game of golf while donating to charity THE start of the 2019 season for Gophers Charity Golf will be the game held at Lydenburg Golf Club on Sunday 03 February 2019. Anyone wishing to participate is welcome to meet at the golf course at 07:30 for registration for the day's IPS competition with green fees of R170.00 for 18 holes. Players can nominate their partner and then will be allocated a four ball team by the committee. As each game is a social charity event, players need not be affiliated to or be a member of a golf club to participate. Beginners, scholars or social players that do not have an official handicap are all welcome to play and enjoy a round of golf while being eligible for the prizes on offer which exceed R1 000 in value. There is no joining or membership fee required to be a member. Each player automatically becomes a member for the year. Gophers is a non-profit organization, run under the guidance of a Constitution and a Committee. The prime aim is to raise funds for charity needs for local people while enjoying a game of golf. The secondary aim is to encourage members to officially join a local golf club thereby supporting the sport. Games are rotated between a number of local golf courses such as Lydenburg, Chrome, Pilgrims, Sabie and at the resort course at the Akabeko Boutique Hotel. Charity funds are raised on an annual basis from a portion of the green fees of each game for the year. Other methods to raise funds are from company sponsorship for the day's play, donations from the public and the sale of Gophers Golf shirts. The charity fund for 2018 was awarded to a Grade 1 pupil of Laerskool Lydenburg, Joshua Vermaak, who has extremely poor eyesight affecting his daily functioning and ability to learn. The cost for testing of Joshua's eyesight by an ophthalmologist in Nelspruit and specialized prescription for extraordinary high magnification lenses was covered by Gophers Charity. We appeal to companies who would like to participate in our fundraising efforts and have a promotion opportunity during one of this year's fixtures to contact Bruce (082 801 6821) for details. The cost to sponsor a day is R2 500 which includes a free 4 ball and advertising of the companies choice. Gophers Committee wish all our players a successful 2019, both on and off the golf course.

Tech North in partnership with STIHL is making it possible for two cycling buddies to compete in mountain biking events this year. They, with the help from Linelle Watermeyer from Herbalife for supplements, sponsored the years’ entry fees and clothes.
