4. Andre Coetzee

DAAR was Sondagaand by Doodlebugs Kleuterskool ingebreek. Anandi Van Der Merwe

THE Lydenburg / Mashishing Business Chamber (LMBC) Executive held their first meeting on Monday evening. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Cor De J a g e r, w h o h a s agreed to be coopted as technical advisor to the LMBC. In terms of electricity the most urgent issue seems to be the repair and maintenance of the ring-feed system that links the five substations and the various mini-subs. Many of the minisubs are overloaded Photo: Andre Coetzee due to TCLM making emergency connections and re-routing the supply of electricity. The ring-feed system is supposed to allow for electricity feed from alternative substations and mini-subs and to balance the entire system. According to Messers. De Jager and Francois Vermeulen, this should be step one in ensuring a more stable supply. Together with this, mini-subs should be serviced regularly. Once this is in place, the reticulation in town can be tackled. Maintenance should however start at the ring feed system. The LMBC has urged TCLM to accept the proposal of the private company Rural Maintenance, to ensure a sustainable future. In terms of water supply, the first step would be to repair defective plant at the waterworks and then to ensure proper filtration and chlorine dosage of the water. The LMBC has also resolved that the defunct Technical Committee between residents and TCLM be re-instated. A lot of expertise lies within town with various engineers who are retired and within the business and contractor spheres, that can assist the Municipality. These people STEELPOORT are willing and able to assist TCLM and many would donate their time, •Address: Bergsering Str. - Unit 3 - Steelpoort knowledge and experience free of charge •Tel: 013 230 9738 to advise and help the Municipality. The onus is on TCLM to utilise or listen to the available expertise. Feedback was also given in terms of the Lydenburg P.R.I.D.E. project, which aims to clean up the town. Several waste bins have been placed at strategic locations and the system works well. DM020140099839GA An additional 20 or so drums will be made available to T C L M f o r placement around the town entrances where taxis and vehicles regularly stop. These drums need to be mounted on swivel pipes that must be set in concrete and that must be emptied by TCLM. The LMBC has r e q u e s t e d business to donate a few bags of cement for this to be accomplished. In terms of tourism t h e L M B C continues to support the Gustav Kliengbiel Heritage MTB bike race. Me. Charlene Coetzee also mentioned that a proper sign will be erected at the museum, which will tell the heritage story. Congratulations to Chrismari Aucamp who was elected to the LMBC Exec. Verlorenkloof Botany and Archaeology weekend a huge success! VERLORENKLOOF held their annual botany and archaeology breakaway this past weekend and once again it was a great success with many participants. The theme of the weekend was absolutely anything green and growing! Verlorenkloof has a rich bio-diverse landscape in and amongst old archaeological ruins, which offer ample opportunities to experience many different trees, flowers and orchids in the various habitats which are a joy to visit in any season. Weather and fitness levels always play a part in the weekend, participants join the expedition but can easily splinter off. Friday nights archaeology talk by resident enthusiast and owner of Verlorenkloof, Eric Johnson, spoke to the end of the Bokoni nation

and participants visited a refuge site in Verlorenkloof on Saturday morning. During Saturday afternoon Frans Krige (orchid specialist) led a group to the top of the escarpment and they found Verlorenkloofs iconic Gladiolus cataractarum in splendid flower. On Sunday the weekend wrapped up and guests had brunch together. For more information on the next weekend breakaway contact Verlorenkloof on info@verlorenkloof.co.za or 082 048 0777.

Vrees is onnodig. So, vra my of ek ’n kamer vol blikkieskos het?

’n Baie groot persentasie kinders word vandag groot in gebroke, enkel of saamgestelde gesinne. Thelma Laubscher.

So n slang was onlangs weer in Lydenburg gevind.

1. Take a step back. Do some analysis on whether you actually need a car. If you're going to be living close to lectures and there's a campus bus service and Uber is also available, buying a vehicle might not be the smartest move economically especially if oncampus parking is s e r i o u s l y restricted. 2. Budget properly. Set the amount you can afford and then hunt for the best value in that price range. Remember to budget for insurance, registration, running costs and servicing. Search nationally online because the cost of transporting the ideal vehicle to you might be outweighed by the savings. 3. Never compromise on safety. Get the brakes, shocks, lights, mirrors and wipers checked out. Budget for replacing tyres and wiper blades if necessary and for repairing any flaws in the windscreen. 4. Buy reliability. Colour and looks are not as important as a vehicle that will start first time, every time. Check the service history and question the current owner about any recurring issues. Purchasing from someone you know, who can vouch for the vehicle's performance, is ideal. 5. Think security. Expensive sound systems and trendy mags might be desirable for a student driver but they're also thief magnets. Vehicles, especially when parked where students often park them, are vulnerable to crime and expensive accessories up your risk. If the vehicle doesn't have good electronic security then invest in a gear or wheel lock. 6. Get the best. Look for solid brands that will bring you good re-sale value. The 2018 Gumtree Pre-Owned Car Awards acknowledged the Volkswagen Take Up! 1.0 3-door and the Tata Bolt 1.2T XMS 5-door as the best two-year-old vehicles under R130k, and the VW Polo Vivo GP 1.4 Trendline and Toyota Etios 1.5 XS Sprint as the best under R160k. IS this a Multi Purpose Vehicle, a Sports Utility Vehicle, a bus or a car? Kia says it is a SUV. After driving it I think it is a large sedan. Let me explain: I drove the previous generation Sedona and I was suitably impressed. This is the new generation. Grand Sedona is large. Big. Groot. Makulu! And it is Grand. Even the lowest spec model has enough toys that it will entertain you for a long time. It is also not cheap. It is expensive. What do you get for your money? Well, you get 7, or 8, or 11 seats. Correct 11. Depending on specifications you get no sunroof or twin sunroofs, manual aircon or dual zone climate control. You get standard, high intensity or LED lights. Heated auto folding mirrors. Six airbags. All the safety gizmos ABS, EBD, HSA, ESC, HPD, USB, Aux, IsoFix and so on. You get the usual electronic lock, electric tinted windows, electric ventilated and heated seats (some models). You get DataDot for security, remote steering controls, tilt and telescopically adjustable power steering, trip computer, Satnav, several USB ports of which some are charging ports. There is an additional 12V socket in the boot, which ranges from small to cavernous, depending on seating arrangements. There is even a very simple, second mirror above the centre rearview mirror, called a conversation mirror. This unit is curved and allows the driver and front passenger to see all rear occupants and talk to them without looking backwards. Lekker if you need to watch the kids or want polite conversation with your passengers. Together with outside mirrors and two lighted, proper vanity mirrors, you are looking at six dedicated mirrors on Sedona. Technically the Sedona is powered by an exceptionally quiet, smooth 2.2L four cylinder 16 Valve turbodiesel that makes a whopping 147 kW and 440 Nm. This motor which can rev to 4 500 (it is a diesel remember) with ease and it is mated to a quick shifting 8-speed automatic gearbox. And that is what Sedona is. It is everything (good) for everyone. It is in fact a Bus, a Car, a MPV and a SUV. And it plays every role very well. And that is also my biggest criticism. It is neither a small nippy city car, a fear inspiring sports car, or an off-roader. It is politically correct. It targets too wide a market and in doing everything as well as it does, it comes at a price. And interestingly this is exactly what society nowadays want. It does not catch the eye. It is not noisy. It does not advertise wealth. It will not offend anyone. But let us talk about the drive. Kia Motors Lydenburg’s owner insisted I take

09

the Sedona for a brisk run up the Longtom Pass. I was fortunate in that I had no holdups due to trucks, so I could go! I can understand why he wanted me to drive the pass. This is a car. A well sorted luxury sedan. It accelerates briskly, corners like a sports car without body roll and brakes are phenomenal. It does not feel big at all. The engine remains quiet if it is gunned and the 8-speed autobox shifts smoothly. There is no turbo lag and no auto box wondering what is going on. You can drive it in a hurry. The steering is well weighted. I have spoken about the brakes. They are very good, even perhaps being a bit abrupt in town during slow driving. I liked the quality feel of the cabin and the way Sedona drives and handles. I think the conversation mirror is brilliant. And it is a nice conversation piece of practical equipment! The 5-year unlimited distance warranty and 5-year 100 000 km service plan are industry leaders. I liked the vehicle’s versatility. It will make an excellent family holiday cruiser, mom’s taxi for the kids and their friends, and general people carrier. The option of using less seats allows for a huge cargo area. Despite my personal bias against SUV type vehicles, I have no choice but to give the new Kia Grand Sedona five stars. Andre Coetzee

“Could someone run close to a Comrades Marathon every day for 5 days? Is it possible to cover 400km on foot in under 80 hours for the racing snakes, or 120 hours for the average runner looking for a challenge? Or is there nothing average about taking on this challenge?” Erik Vermeulen - Munga Trail Race Director LYDENBURG’S own Kevin “Bergloper” Ruthven is taking up the challenge of this epic race this year from 10 - 15 April. We have all heard a lot about his training, but here is some more info about the race itself. This will give you a good idea of what he will really go through.

THE Mac Mac Goldpanning Golf day will be held on 2 March at the Pilgrims Rest Golf Club, tee off at 08:30 . For further information and entries contact Sonja 083 655 4832 or Bennie 083 282 5555.

The 2019, 3rd Edition, of The Munga Trail race will start at Lakenvlei Forest Lodge at 12 Noon on Wednesday 10th April. The route follows the escarpment in a North Easterly direction for 400km before finishing on the rim of the 3rd largest canyon in the world: The Blyde River Canyon. The route will make use of forestry roads, jeep tracks, single tracks, the odd railway line and virgin grassland on occasion. The route will use district dirt roads only when necessary. Runners will pass through private land, forestry areas and nature reserves. Runners will navigate primarily by GPS. The route files will be made available prior to the race. Where possible and necessary, route markings will be used in conjunction with the GPS. The race is limited to single runners. There is no seeding and anyone can enter. Everyone starts in one bunch at the same time, and the race is non-stop, so just one stage. The Munga Trail is semi-supported. There are five race villages along the race route, spaced roughly 80km apart from the start. At each of these villages runners will be able to eat and sleep, but they do not have to stop at the village or sleep if they don't want to. It is totally up to them. Apart from the five race villages runners will also have access to water points every 30 to 40kms. No runner will be allowed to have support from outside in any physical form. Runners will not have access to a bag during the race, only at the finish, so everything they will need outside the support stations will have to be carried with them. Right now Kevin needs help with a Enduro Hydration backpack for the race and with running shoes as well. If anyone is able to assist Kevin with these items please give him a call on 076 737 3910.
