Business Chambers win Eskom case in High Court After nearly two years of court cases and the impending debt Thaba Chweu has from Eskom, the Gauteng High Court ruled last week in the favour of Lydenburg, Sabie and Graskop. These three towns, Thaba Chweu, were under immense pressure because of the power interruptions and load shedding. Eskom went through with cutting the power because of Thaba Chweu’s massive outstanding electricity bill, amounting to nearly R450 million. But businesses like York Timbers, the Lydenburg / Mashishing Business C h a m b e r, S a b i e R a t e P a y e r s Association and the Chamber of Commerce in Graskop put everything they had into the court case. "The decision of Eskom to schedule interrupted electricity cuts is reviewed and set aside," Gauteng High Court Judge Wendy Hughes ruled on Thursday. There were two reviews before the High Court – one brought by the three chambers of commerce against the

Thaba Chweu Municipality and Eskom and another brought by Resilient Properties Propriety against the eMalahleni municipality. The chambers of commerce and tourism are Sabie, Lydenburg and Graskop. They represent business and industries operating within the Thaba Chweu municipality. On October 9, 2017, Eskom, in an attempt to collect its debt owed by Thaba C h w e u m u n i c i p a l i t y, i n s t i t u t e d electricity supply power cuts within the municipality. It owed more than

R450m to the power utility. Eskom demanded R80m, but the municipality indicated it would be impossible to pay the amount owed to the power utility. Interruptions 'encroach on family time' The chambers of commerce argued that the interruptions, which were originally for a period of four and a half hours on week days, and five hours on weekends, were "disruptive" and "detrimental" for individuals, and "catastrophic" for the entire municipality. They argued that the times when the interruptions were imposed "encroached on family time". They also said that the "worst" was when the power supply returned, as this created far-reaching consequences that had "catastrophic effects on health, safety, access to water and sanitation for

both residents and businesses". They also argued that when the power supply is cut, all sewerage works immediately come to a standstill and that sewage is not pumped to the sewerage processing plants but instead sits for the duration of the cut-off. Payment failure Resilient Properties Propriety, which owns Highveld Mall, brought an application against the eMalahleni municipality after Eskom cut off the power supply. Resilient pays electricity to the eMalahleni municipality, however, due to its dispute with utility, the municipality had not paid over the full amount billed by Eskom. Eskom, municipality 'have failed' In May 2016, eMalahleni completed an acknowledgement of debt admitting it owed Eskom more than R500m. After giving the municipality notice, the power utility forged ahead and implemented the interruptions of electricity supply during the course of February and March 2017. Resilient has said that eMalahleni is a "financial delinquent municipality and its conduct is unlawful". Judge Hughes said Resilient's submission "echoes" the sentiments of the chambers of commerce, that when Eskom implements these interruptions there are "catastrophic consequences". Constitutional duties "It is apparent that there is a dispute with regards to payment due to Eskom by the two municipalities concerned. It is common cause that both parties have constitutional duties and obligations towards the public at large," Hughes said. "Both parties in my view, have failed the public at large, on the one hand we have the delinquent municipalities and on the one hand we have Eskom having not been paid by the municipalities opting to deprive the public of basic services in terms of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. "In conclusion it is evident to me that Eskom and the municipalities failed to adopt the d i s p u t e mechanism at their disposal in terms of IRFA ( I n t e r governmental R e l a t i o n s Framework Act).” Article: different sources

milestone was reached on Monday as part of the Glencore Lydenburg Smelter community development outreach for SMME businesses (Small Medium and Micro Enterprises). After being awarded a tender for the transport of chrome ore to Mozambique, local business Rekgodile Logistics was able to acquire two brand new MAC trucks. The trucks were the main attraction at an event at the Glencore Hub on Monday to celebrate this huge step forward. “We are very excited and fortunate to have been able to acquire the trucks after Glencore awarded us a tender for the transport of chrome ore from the Lydenburg Smelter to Mozambique,” said Managing Director of Rekgodile Logistics Mr Mike Ngodwane. The whole board of Rekgodile Logistic were present to celebrate this step. The event was opened and attended by the MEC of Economic Development and Tourism Mr S. J. Kholwane. MEC Kholwane urged local businesses and mines to work with the government to drive economic development in the province. Economic growth has been evident in the province over the last few years and Glencore has played a huge part in the development of local businesses. In 2011, Glencore took a decision to effect real change in communities it operates in, in line with its corporate strategy. “It is our desire to uplift previously disadvantaged economies through economic emancipation,” Van der Westhuizen said previously. ~ Michelle Boshoff

Dan skakel ek oor BBC toe, dis net Brexit... dan skakel ek oor CNN toe... dis net die muur vir die Mexico-grens. Brexit is so vervelig. Die muur is so vervelig. Dan skakel ek na die regte nuus oor op kanaal 124 ‘E’ Entertainment nuus. Daar is dit Robert Kelly (R. Kelly) die sanger met liedjies van “I believe I can fly”. Hy is skuldig aan pedofilie na bewering. Ek het ook Sondagaand vir ure die dokumentêr oor hom gekyk “Surviving R. Kelly.” Die afgryslikste seksdade wat hy met minderjarige meisies gepleeg het. jou dak wys jy het geld. Jou motorfiets moet ’n BMW wees. Jy moet aan hierdie klub of daardie vereniging behoort om in tel te wees. Jy moet effe laat by die kerk instap en voor gaan sit sodat die hele gemeente weet jy is ’n kerkmens. Jou bloedjie moet by hierdie of daardie skool wees. Jy moet ’n rugby-liefhebber wees. Sokker is vir “common” mense. Jy moet polities korrek optree en jou woorde mooi tel. Jy moet “groen” wees en net slaai vreet! Alles om deel van die trop te wees en aanvaar te word. Jy word geen indiwidualiteit toegelaat nie. Soos ek sê, ons doen geweldig moeite om deel van dié uitgelese gemeenskap te wees. Om sosiaal aanvaarbaar of gesien te wees. Ek het nogal ’n probleem daarmee. Ek is self

skuldig want ek is lief vir mense. My klein vriendekring is vir my goud werd. Die rede vir vandag se rubriek is dat ek al hierdie moeite en geskarrel en spandering waarneem en wonder of ons dieselfde energie bestee aan ons geloof en diens aan ons Hemelse Vader. Wat doen ons en hoe tree ons op as niemand ons sien of hoor nie? Ek praat nie van jou “kollekte” of finansiële steun aan ’n betrokke kerk nie. Wat doen jy vir dié wat nie sosiaal aanvaarbaar is nie? Die armes. Die bejaardes. Die siekes. Selfs die sakemanne wat sukkel. Mense wat na huispaaiement, krag en water niks oor het vir kos nie. Dié sonder die “Jeep” T-hemp. Ek praat van jou eie, diepe en persoonlike verhouding met God, jou houding, jou empatie, jou eerlikheid en jou karakter. Wat is regtig belangrik? Jou familie? Jou kinders? Watter voorbeeld stel jy vir hulle? Wat vat jy saam die ewigheid in, behalwe liefde, geloof en hoop? Dink maar gerus oor hierdie dinge en gooi die kettings wat jou in hierdie “rat race” vashou, af.

WE see new car concepts all the time, but it’s not often we spot a “smart camping concept.” The camping concept you see here is called the Nissan x Opus and it’s the result of the Japanese manufacturer teaming up with a trailer tent firm called Opus. Old school V8 still rules Lexus likes its V8 “IF everybody is moving in one direction,” explains John Hennessey, “I like to go the opposite way.” That, ladies and gentlemen, is confirmation that we won’t see an all-electric version of the Hennessey Venom F5. With new EV hypercars popping up on a seemingly weekly basis, Hennessey wants to keep things old school. “If the market is moving towards electrification, we are the old-school guys who believe in a maximum power to weight ratio delivered via a 1200kW-plus, twin-turbo V8 internal combustion engine,” he told us. Why? Because he points back to the grand tuning traditions of Colin Chapman and Carrol Shelby, and the cars they were building more than 50 years ago. Not that the Venom F5 needs any electrification. Said twin-turbo V8 is a 7.6-litre motor, with a machined block, steel cylinder sleeves, a pair of ballbearing turbos with billet compressor wheels and a dry sump set-up. Though 1200kW is quoted, Hennessey’s already confirmed to TopGear that this engine has been tested at well over 1500kW. Not for the sake of power, but for the sake of speed. He doesn’t want to just beat his Bugatti and Koenigsegg-shaped rivals, he wants to obliterate

them. “300mph (480kph) is kind of the baseline,” Hennessey told us last year. “That’s where we would like to begin.” Nor is he that concerned by either of his rivals. “Giving our customers the most exciting driving experience is what it’s all about for us,” he said. “However, I love that Christian and the Koenigsegg team are always pushing themselves to build faster cars. “And don’t forget about Bugatti – if they decide to build a Chiron Super Sport you can bet that it will be a contender.” He noted how the final horsepower figure for the production Venom F5 will be revealed in due course, but that it’ll deliver as much power as is necessary to crack 300mph. The development programme is all on schedule, apparently. There’s lot of build and engineering work happening at Silverstone, the first prototypes will be built in June, and the plan is to reveal the car to customers in August at the Pebble Beach automotive week. After that? “We’ll begin testing the Venom F5 at higher speeds from September through the end of this year.” Only a few Venom F5s from the 24 cars planned still remain up for grabs, and each will cost R21mil a piece. MUCH has happened since Lexus first launched the RC F. Countless iterations of the BMW M4. A new, quite bombastic Mercedes-AMG C63 and a new, slightly less bombastic Audi RS5. Then there’s the Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio, possessing four doors but still very much a rival to Lexus’s hardedged coupe. Time for a wee bit of a freshen up, then, to keep the RC F in our conscience. Unveiled at the 2019 Detroit motor show, the Lexus RC F gets not only new styling, tweaked suspension and better aero, but a new, harder cored Track Edition. Thanks to increasingly stringent emissions laws, its 5.0-litre V8 now produces 336kW, down from 350kW. The Lexus RC F is still gloriously free of turbocharging, though. So while it’ll be less dramatic accelerating off the line than its rivals, it’ll rev higher and sing louder at the top of its gears. The combination of launch control and an eight-speed automatic gearbox does yield 0-100kph in 4.5secs, mind. Further focus comes from reduced weight, achieved by the wonderfully Japanese method of hollowing out intricate mechanical components rather than ditching any equipment. The Track Edition is more focused yet, as its carbon fibre body panels and huge wing suggest. While it keeps the same power output as standard RC F’s, it cuts weight further by using carbon ceramic brakes, lightweight BBS alloys, a titanium exhaust (imagine the noise) and that carbon roof and bonnet. The latter are crafted on the same production line as the Lexus LFA’s carbon bits, for extra nerd points. While Lexus says the Track Edition was developed with the help of its Super GT and IMSA race teams, there’s a full red leather interior inside. So while it cuts almost 80kg from the standard Lexus RC F, it’s still a near 1,700kg car. So it’s not going to be the most natural trackday toy, but it ought to be a riot if the marshals aren’t too black-flag-happy… Prices and finer details haven’t yet been announced, but expect the new Lexus RC F to start at around R1.4 million with the Track Edition – and its copious carbon – likely to cost a good chunk more.
