well-known doctor from the Lydenburg Medical Centre was part of the team who did a cesarian on 18 March to deliver conjoined twins. The twin babies were transferred to Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria shortly after their birth. Malamule said the babies, who were born at Lydenburg Hospital in Thaba Chweu, were transferred to Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria soon after birth. "A caesarean was performed on March 18 and the twins, who are conjoined on the abdomen and chest, were delivered. The babies share an umbilical cord," he said. The twins were born with a combined weight of 4.8kg. Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Manzini wished the twins a successful surgery. "We would like to wish the children a successful operation and we believe that God will be with them throughout the operation," Manzini said. SA has seen a few births of conjoined twins over the years, including the famous Mpho and Mphonyana Mathibela, who were successfully separated at the head by doctors at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in 1988. Mphonyana died a year after the separation due to pneumonia. In 2006, Danielle and Danika Lowton were also successfully separated during a 16-hour surgery. A team at Dr George Mokhari Hospital in GaRankuwa separated male twins Tshepo and Tshepang from Limpopo. They had been conjoined at the abdomen.

Tuberculosis awareness month THE South African Medical Association (SAMA) said government should focus on neglected groups such as healthcare workers and mine workers, as the world commemorates World Tuberculosis Day on Sunday. The theme of this year's commemoration is “It's Time”, a reference to the urgent need for governments around the world to act on commitments to eradicate TB as set out in the Global 2020 milestones. Ending the TB epidemic by 2030 is among the h e a l t h t a rg e t s o f t h e S u s t a i n a b l e Development Goals. To accelerate the TB response in countries to reach targets, heads of state made strong commitments to end TB at the first-ever United Nations (UN) HighLevel Meeting in September 2018. "More urgent action to deal with TB is needed. High-risk groups such as healthcare and mine workers have all but been forgotten in the fight against TB and we believe there is a need to refocus attention on them as vulnerable groups," said Dr Angelique Coetzee, chairperson of SAMA. Coetzee said the 2019 World TB Day theme was aimed at, among other things, scaling up access to TB treatment, ensuring sufficient and sustainable financing for TB research, promoting an end to stigma and discrimination associated with TB, and promoting an equitable, rights-based and people-centred TB response. In 2017, South Africa reported 22,000 deaths from TB. This number, however, excluded those who suffered from both TB and HIV infection as these deaths were attributed to HIV. “Make no mistake, TB is a serious issue in

TB is an abbreviation of the word Tuberculosis and is how people often refer to the disease. Learn about the symptoms of TB, and how TB drugs are used to treat and cure TB, and the increasing problem of drug resistant TB. Latent TB The bacteria that usually cause the disease in humans, usually affect the lungs, but can affect other parts of the body. If you are infected with the bacteria you won't necessarily become sick, because you can have either latent TB or TB disease. People with latent TB do not feel sick and do not have any symptoms. This can be because they have an infection, such as HIV, or some other health problem. Some people are known to have a higher risk of becoming ill. These include · Infants and children aged less than 4 years · People infected within the previous two years · People infected with HIV · People who have certain illnesses or conditions which affect their immune system, such as people with diabetes, and people with chronic renal failure. What are the symptoms of TB? The symptoms depend on which area of the body has been infected. If someone has pulmonary disease, which is TB in the lungs, then they may have a bad cough that lasts longer than two weeks. They may also have pain in their chest and they may cough up blood or phlegm from deep inside their lungs.

She said being responsible for providing healthcare does not make healthcare workers immune from contracting TB. In fact, she points out, healthcare workers were more likely to spread the disease to other uninfected patients within healthcare facilities, which makes intervention in this group particularly important. "The other high-risk group - mineworkers work in enclosed environments and are forced to breathe the same air due to the lack of ventilation. It is critical that they, and healthcare workers, are tested at least once a

year for TB,” said Coetzee. Coetzee said anyone who presents with any symptoms associated with TB, must be tested immediately and that treatment begins as soon as possible. Some common symptoms present as coughing, fever, night sweats, or weight loss, which may present as mild for months, leading to delays in seeking care. "This delay can result in the transmission of the bacteria to between 10 to 15 other people in one year so it is critical that any signs are checked quickly. If there is any suspicion of TB, patients must consult their doctors for their own, and others' safety," said Coetzee. African News Agency (ANA)

Lydenburg's Wine Guild chose Organic Wines as their theme for the March tasting. Jakkie Mellet was the researcher and presenter and Amani Boutique Hotel the venue. To put the organic wine scene in perspective, Jakkie pointed out that: Of the current 94 545 hectares of vines producing wine grapes under cultivation in South Africa only 520ha of organic wine blocks are registered in the country. (TM) In South Africa Organic means wine that has been made with organicallyproduced grapes. This means it affects more what happens in the vineyard than in the winery, and preservatives such as sulphur dioxide can still be used. It is a way of farming that views the vineyard as a living ecological system, rejecting the use of herbicides, fungicides, pesticides and fertilisers. Biodynamic farming takes it one step further, reverting to an ancient system that works in

harmony with lunar and cosmic cycles and homeopathic remedies. Organic farming. Simply put, organic farming means – no chemical fertilisers, no herbicides or chemical weedkiller and no systemic pesticides (no systemic insecticides and no systemic fungicides).When you buy organic you are guaranteed that the product has been grown free of systemics and GMOs (genetically modified organisms). In South Africa there are currently only three biodynamic registered wine estates: Reyneke wines, Waterkloof Wines and Elgin Ridge. Organic wine is made with organically grown grapes, but in our country it can still contain sulfites. However, organic winemakers claim to use only “small amounts of additives including sulfites” or no added sulfites at all. Still, this means that organic wine is not technically sulfite-free. The wines tasted were Cornerstone 2014, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot; Reyneke Organic; Upland Organic Wine Estate's Cabernet Saunignon 2009; Org de Rac 2014 C a b e r n e t S a u v i g n o n ; Wa t e r k l o o f Circumstance Merlot 2013 and Longridge Pinotage 2017. Jordan's Black Magic Merlot 2015 – a nonorganic wine thrown in for comparison, was voted the Wine of the Evening and the Longridge 2017 Pinotage was chosen as Value for Money wine. The Lydenburg Wine Guild's functions are open to all wine lovers – normally held in town on the third Thursday of the month. Toe koop ek maar koerante. O ja – en baie duur tydskrifte – die soort wat ek slegs een keer per jaar myself mee bederf. Maar Eskom het my slaaptyd heeltemal deurmekaar gegooi verlede week. Dit het my gedwing om vroeër in die bed te klim en ek het nie ’n idee gehad wat om te lees nie. Die honde het blykbaar nie omgegee nie. Maar ek was verveeld, my laptop was ook nie genoeg gelaai vir die twee uur marathon sessie party aande nie. So dis Eskom se skuld dat ek al die duur tydskrifte gekoop het, net so ‘n paar as trooskos. Niks is ooit my skuld nie. As die krag uitgaan sien ek net swart voor my, ek weet nie hoekom dit my so kwaad maak nie. Julle sal seker almal jul eie opinies hê. Maar die Mosambiek-rede het my nog meer ontstel. Dan sien ek, soos ek sê, net swart. Letterlik en figuurlik geliefdes. Ruby, my beste maatjie, is saam winkels toe. Dit is haar absolute g u n s t e l i n g t y d v e r d r y f - r o n d r y. Diegene wat 'n klein wit karretjie in die dorp met 'n bokser / kruis se kop deur die venster sien – dis ek en Ruby. Met dié dat Eskom my 'n verskoning gegee het om elke aand om te lees – het ek weer goed op hoogte gekom van die stand van sake. Die stank van sake ---- lekker speel ek daar met die woorde nê! Die mees verdraaide 'stand van sake' (in my opinie) speel hom af in hierdie land. Let wel, ek kon sê Trump, die plaasmoorde, die Afrikaans se stry... enigiets wat julle lees is volgens my verdraai. Maar gisteraand het ek op CNN gehoor Trump is onskuldig aan die Rusland-konkel via die Meulerondersoek, en hy is soos ‘n kat wat room gesteel het daaroor. Hy het behoorlik gespin van tevredenheid. Sy kop word platter - of dalk sy hare wat dunner word? Ek het soveel moed geskep met Cyril Ramaphosa se aanstelling verlede jaar, maar nie meer nie. Niemand kan regtig na hom vinger wys nie maar ek sien dat hy nie veel mag het oor al die oud ANC-kaders nie. Maar Hoorhierso, het julle gehoor van die Siamese tweeling wat hier gebore is. Nationalisation I often read comments on social media. The latest concerns Eskom and its collapse. Many commentators call for the nationalisation of the so called state enterprises. Now in my opinion, it takes a special kind of stupid to call for nationalisation, and here is why: Do these people not understand that the abbreviation SOE stands for State Owned

Enterprise? If you nationalise something the state takes it over and runs it. A SOE is owned by the state and is run or managed by a state appointed Board. An SOE cannot do what it wants. It is owned by the state. It is already nationalised and just functions under another name. So your Eskom, SAA, Prasa, the Post Office and all those institutions are governed by the state. If its staff sells out to the Guptas or enter into fraudulent contracts, its does so with the sanction of the state. If, as in our case, the state says that it

knows nothing about the corruption, it is a blatant lie. Why do you think the Commission looking into state capture is looking into Eskom and the other SOE’s? Because they are state owned. The opposite of nationalisation is privatisation. In this case, the entity is a competitive business that must be sustainable. Unfortunately the private sector has been corroded by state officials, BEE tenderpreneurs and cadres so that the boundaries between nationalised and private entities have in some cases disappeared. In any economic model, the private sector performs better and Eskom and all SOE’s should therefore be privatised.

Wanneer 'n ouer sy eie seer probeer wegsteek omdat hy of sy voel dat dit nodig is om sterk te wees voor die kinders, onderdruk die kind sy eie rouproses en dit is uiters ongesond. Die woede-fase is 'n natuurlike volgende stap wat homself moet uitwoed. As 'n kind nie toegelaat word om sy woede te wys nie, haal hy dit later op die verkeerde plekke teen maats of onderwysers uit. Mense wat die rou-fase oorgeslaan het, haak dikwels vas in die

woede-fase. Indien die eerste twee fases hul regmatige plek gekry het, volg die herstel fase hierna. Dit is wanneer ouers en kinders weer die stukke optel en heel word. Thelma maan ouers om hul eie motiewe deeglik te ondersoek en deurgaans te vra of elke besluit in belang van die kind is. Een van die algemeenste sondes teen kinders, is wanneer 'n ouer 'n kind probeer beïnvloed om sy of haar stem te kry – gewoonlik teen die ander ouer. 'n Ongesonde enkelouer maak die volgende foute: hy of sy manipuleer, soek simpatie of vriendskap by die kinders in plaas daarvan om die ouer te wees, beleef hom- of haarself as die slagoffer, dwing die kind om te kies tussen sy ouers en misbruik die kind as boodskapper. Wat 'n kind die nodigste het, is onvoorwaardelike liefde, gebalanseer met dissipline – hierin lê sy sekuriteit. Veiligheid, goeie versorging en genoeg rus, grense en geleenthede om te leer, te waag en besluite te neem en gesonde interaksie met vriende en twee betrokke ouers – dit is die resep vir heel gesinslede, ook in 'n gebroke huis. The new bumpers have been sourced from Bundu Gear, with the front item featuring upwardly slanting sides to expose more of the tyre surface and further improve on the Thar’s approach angle. It also features brightly coloured recovery points, a nudge bar and high-lift jack mounting points. The Bundu Gear front bumper furthermore boasts LEDs and a mounting point for off-road accessories (such as a front tow bar or removable winch). Bundu Gear also supplies rock sliders that can be fitted to the Adventure Series at “an additional cost”. Saving motoring money Why tyres are important WITH relentless fuel price increases, and the budget about to beat us on the head again, it's time to think smart about how to save serious money from your motoring spend. Gumtree Auto's Jeff Osborne has a good list of easy-to-implement tips. · Fill up before petrol price increases or hold on until a reduced rate is implemented. · If you have a diesel vehicle, hunt around for the cheapest rate. · Use one, or several, of the many loyalty programmes to get “free” petrol. · Learn how to optimize fuel consumption with smooth driving which means less braking. · Save fuel by not excessively revving the car when you start it. · Stick to the speed limit – not only is it safer but speeding uses more petrol. · Improve fuel economy by removing extra weight or resistance – empty your boot and take off roof racks when they're not needed. · Air conditioning costs you fuel, but open windows can cause uneconomic air resistance at higher speeds, so, if you can drive with windows closed and just a circulating fan on, you will be travelling optimally. · Drive less - cut out short distance trips by walking, and, for work commutes, use public transport or join a carpool/lift sharing scheme. · Do your driving where possible in non-peak times – you will use less petrol on a quicker trip without constant stopping and starting. · Good tyres, properly balanced, will last longer and drive smoother than cheap ones – saving you money on fuel consumption and replacements. · Check tyre pressures constantly – an RAC study in the UK found that tyres under-inflated by only 15psi can use 6% more fuel. · Negotiate car insurance rates - it's a very competitive market now so seek better offers. · Wash your car yourself – valets can be expensive. · Park your vehicle away from other cars if possible – this reduces the potential for expensive dings and scrapes. ·

TYRES are probably the most under-estimated part of motoring. No matter how much you invest in your vehicle, it's tyres which are your first line of defence against an accident. They also affect the comfort of your ride and they represent a big slice of any motoring budget. Tyres become especially critical in the South African winter, as ice appears on the Highveld roads, rain (hopefully) drenches the Western Cape and the ever-present potholes across the country seem to get deeper. Jeff Osborne of Gumtree Autos offers these basic tips for tyre maintenance. 1. A tyre check is free so drop into a tyre dealer every six months at minimum and always do so before a long journey. 2. Most dealers will give genuine advice and show you the indicators of a worn tyre if they're recommending a change, but, if you're in doubt, get a second opinion. 3. If your vehicle is shuddering or running strangely then there's almost certainly a problem with your tyres and/or alignment – check it out urgently. 4. If you're worried about your tyres, insist that the dealer raises the vehicle and checks thoroughly before giving you the OK because a dangerously worn section on the inside can easily be missed on a ground inspection. 5. Invest in decent tyres (and the right ones for your size of vehicle) – there's a proven performance difference with quality, properly fitted products, especially when braking in the wet. Think of the extra cost as a form of insurance policy. Be prepared to shop around but always compare the exact same tyres. 6. Make sure you get your wheels aligned regularly, you will make the cost back in longer tyre life. 7. Protect your tyres - never drive fast on rough roads or through potholes and remember that ramping kerbs can affect alignment. Via email
