Tourism & Travel Academy students on their first practical learning experience at Sanbonani Resort Hotel in Hazyview. THE first groups of demand-led training, resulting from the new travel and tourism industry alliance in South Africa, are successfully underway. The first 85 young women and men from previously under-served communities will find employment as soon as they complete their training programmes in the areas of hospitality and enterprise development, successfully. These programmes are ongoing in Hazyview, Durban and Polokwane. The Hazyview Project Hazyview is adjacent to the Greater Kruger National Park and close to some of the world's most celebrated safari businesses. Here, 25 young women from surrounding rural communities are immersed in a Hospitality training programme that will ultimately provide them with job opportunities in a new hotel in Skukuza. Sponsored by global travel technology leader, Amadeus, in partnership with

Economic Development Solutions and Thebe Tourism Group, the Hazyview Project is a first outcome of the Travel and Tourism Excellence Academy, which was announced last year. Says Waldo Adams, Executive Director: Projects at Economic Development Solutions (EDS) and Programme Lead for the Travel and Tourism Excellence Academy, “To bring real value, we first identify together with businesses in the industry, where work opportunities lie and the skills required for those roles, before embarking on the journey to upskill and train individuals in the area.” To ensure the unique needs of the rural-based learners are met and that quality and certified standards are delivered at the end, non-profit Good Work Foundation (GWF) is running the programme at its Hazyview Digital Campus, in partnership with the South Africa College of Tourism. “Our students have jobs waiting for them. In 2020, based on requirements from the industry, we will double the number of students in this programme. The intention is to connect young rural South Africans to the huge opportunities in the growing economy of wildlife,” adds Maria Goretti Awogu, GWFs Executive Head of Programmes. For 12 months, the candidates will receive a combination of theoretical learning, practical training and activities that simulate the real work environment. In addition to industryspecific skills, the programme includes Generic Life Skills essential to equipping students for careers in hospitality (e.g. customer care, workplace communication, telephone and computer skills). Further, the South African College of Tourism (SACT) accreditation will ensure recognised certification for the successful candidates. “On the practical learning front, the students have recently had their first experience in a hotel environment,” continues Kathleen Hay, the GWF Academy Programme Manager. “It was the first time in a hotel for many of them, and so it was an extremely valuable learning experience.”

Groot brand in Burgersfort winkels verwoes

LEIDENBURG NEXT TO LASKE NAKKE

Entstof teen inadikwaaheid.

8 Mei is
As drukgroep is hy so sterk of swak as sy ledetal. “Go figure”.

Aansoekvorms is by die OVK se kantoor by die stadsraad beskikbaar. Vir verdere inligting skakel A. Olivier by 076 803 6758.
Kom help!

Scientists Grow Venom-Producing Glands In Lab, Could Be Used Against Snake Bites BY Corazon Victorino New drugs and antidotes could soon be sourced from lab-grown snake venom-producing gland replicas. A group of researchers in the Netherlands have succeeded in growing replicas of snake glands that produce venom. The scientists did not just come up with one mimic, but multiple lab-grown glands similar to those of several species of snakes. The experiment, conducted by Hubrecht Institute stem cell biologist Hans Clevers and his team, initially started with just one species of snake, the Cape coral snake (Aspidelaps lubricus). The researchers obtained stem cells of Cape coral snakes by dissecting them from eggs before hatching. The stem cells were then subjected to appropriate conditions, so they would grow and form different types of organoids. One type of organoids that grew from the experiment was capable of producing venom similar to the normal venom that real snakes produce. Clevers' team conducted the same experiment on six other species of snakes to yield more organoids that closely resemble real venom-producing glands. The main goal of the scientists when they performed the experiments was to know if they could come up with lab-grown organoids with similar properties to the organs they mimic. The experiments they conducted were part of a bigger study entitled “Stem Cell Based Organoids as Avatars in Human Disease.” Interestingly, they may have found the first step to creating an alternative for snake farms. If they could extract venom from the organoids, they could use the said venom in making new drugs and antidotes for snake bites. This could then encourage labs to ditch the practice of obtaining venom from snakes raised on farms. According to the World Health Organization, around 5.4 million people are bitten by snakes each year. Of the estimated figure, about 2.7 million involve venomous snakes. Then around 81,000 to 138,000 people die yearly because of snake bites. Clevers disclosed to Science News that they are hoping to harvest venom from their lab-grown organoids soon. According to him, this would be more advantageous and easier to do than milking snakes, because the replicas produce more highly

Cathy Schutte, Home for Paws, Amy and her daughter Megan Bellingham and Betsie Bellingham (volunteers at the Home for the Paws shop)
HOME FOR PAWS, an animal shelter and charity in Lydenburg, recently opened a charity shop to raise funds for the animals in their care. The shop is in the Dennis van Renen Business Centre, across from Spar in Lydenburg. It is on the ground floor, directly as you walk into the building. Everyone is invited to donate things that they do not need at home anymore. These items will then be sold at the shop and the profits will go the Home for Paws. Mrs Cathy Schutte, wellknown for her charity work and work with abandoned animals said that they will donate funds and items to other charities as soon as there is an overflow. There were many anonymous angels who donated, even all the way from Riebeeckstad. Thank you to Yvette Labuschagne and Stephanie Reinecke from Quick Sell Realty for the support and the venue at the Dennis van Renen Building, Corne and Gert Landsberg, Cilla and Maddi from Tumbleweed, Stephen Bellingham and Hennie Ackermann for the boerewors rolls, Gerda and Sonnique Ackermann, Sarie and Tanya, Sybrand van Niekerk and James for the shelves and fixing the furniture, Keziah, Charmaine, Maryka, Christelle, Ramona, Annatjie, Nelia, Irene, Denise, Wizards Corner, Titia, Leana, Eunice and Chane. Thank you to Mrs Betsie Bellingham, who has a heart of gold. She will be working at the shop. She has turned the SPCA charity shop in Nelspruit around to a profitable shop and believe that everyone will find something they want at a low cost. If someone has anything to donate please let them know. Even if the item needs love and care they are willing to fix it and it may find a happy home and purpose again. Phone Amy at 082 242 1193 or Cathy at 082 462 5724. Go and visit the shop, there are wonderful paintings, books, clothes, kitchen utensils and toys that are still in a very good condition. ~ By Michelle Boshoff

Kia says the production version is due to be revealed “later in 2019”. Up front, the headlamps are connected to a new interpretation of the brand’s so-called “Tiger Nose” grille, complete with integrated daytime running lights. The glasshouse tapers dramatically towards the rear, while LED lighting elements are present round back, too. While much of the design of the original concept shown in India has been retained, this latest version is certainly closer to the real thing, gaining items such production exterior door handles. Unfortunately, Kia has yet to provide an official look at the SP Signature’s cabin. Earlier reports suggested the production version would likely run on a new platform expected to be shared with the secondgeneration Hyundai Creta, which itself is due in 2020. 5 ways to use less electricity ENERGY saving remains high on the list of priorities for homeowners. This is even further amplified with the newly-approved increase on electricity tariffs for the next three years. With NERSA moving to approve the 9.41% hike in tariffs for the year 2019. 1. Unplug unused plugs and chargers Unused plugs and chargers can significantly impact your electricity bill, especially if there is a large amount of this occurring around the property. You are also likely to get more life out of your appliances if the plugs connected to them are not constantly left in to be damaged. 2. Replace your desktop computer with a laptop Desktop computers are reported to use as much as
80% more power than a laptop, so now might be the time to think about getting rid of the four-yearold desktop computer and upgrading to something a little bit more practical and mobile. 3. Swop out the power-heavy appliances for energy-efficient ones 4. Insulate your geyser Reducing the geyser temperature by just 10° Celsius can reduce your electricity usage by around 10kwh per month. 5. Automate your lighting and equipment Outside lighting and equipment can be set to a photocell that turns lights on at night and off at sunrise. www.property24.com
