eeu ontwikkel is.

643 Workers A are being dismissed at Mototolo

nglo American Platinum has dismissed 643 employees half of its underground workforce - at Mototolo Mine near Burgersfort in Limpopo following an unprotected

strike. The mining group, in an update to shareholders on Monday, said the General Industrial Workers Union of South Africa (Giwusa) declared a strike on May 9 over medical benefits. The following day, Amplats said it was granted a court interdict against a strike. Amplats said requests to return to work were ignored and the group was "left with no option but to dismiss about 50% of Mototolo Mine's underground workforce". Dismissed employees have until May 21 to appeal the decision. "Anglo American Platinum is disappointed by the conduct of the union and its members at a time in which socio-economic pressures continue to detrimentally impact the sector and employment is so scarce," it said in a statement. Impact on production was "minimal" and the platinum mining group says it is exploring options to ensure that the mine recommences full production. www.fin24.com

Nou ironie, soos julle weet.... is vir my ‘n interessante konsep.

Taal I AM writing this week’s column in English so that my personal view on the issue is clearly understood. Afrikaans as a language of learning is under attack by the ANC and specifically the likes of one Panyaza Lesufi. I matriculated from Lydenburg Hoërskool in 1973 (in Afrikaans). When I started my tertiary studies in 1975 in my chosen profession in Nature Conservation Management (note that this was still in the Apartheid era) there were no handbooks or study materials available in Afrikaans. Mostly that remains the case to this day. English was and remains

Underground Wi-Fi makes Anglo American's coal mines more productive The introduction of underground Wi-Fi has improved productivity and working conditions for hundreds of miners at Anglo American's coal mining operations in Mpumalanga by enabling two-way communications between miners working underground and staff on the surface. Goedehoop Colliery recently became the coal division's second operation to introduce intrinsically safe wireless communication infrastructure and smartphones at its 4 million tonne per annum Simunye Shaft. Zibulo Colliery was the first Anglo American Coal South African mine to introduce the technology in 2016. “We're working in an environment where safety and productivity are paramount,” said Anglo American's Edgar Simfukwe. “The introduction of underground Wi-Fi is a gamechanger. It allows our miners to communicate more easily, thereby making mines more productive. The main benefit is that breakdowns can be reported and resolved faster – in some cases, by contacting equipment manufacturers on the spot.” “Not only that, employees can send photographs and video clips to aid troubleshooting,” said Simfukwe. “They're also able to arrange for the immediate dispatch of spare parts, get work authorisations, and flag faults before they become major issues.”

the de-facto language of higher learning. No problem. However, if you take a six year old Pedi child and suddenly put him in an English or Afrikaans school, you are disadvantaging the very future of that child if he or she had no exposure to other languages. He or she suddenly has to cope with terminology and issues totally unknown or foreign to him or her. Lesufi would like to see a rainbow of languages taught in primary school, which will only lead to misunderstanding, conflict and the same chaos that ensued at the tower of Babel. Imagine teachers trying to manage or communicate at that school, having meetings and producing and copying study materials for all the young learners in eleven languages. Chaos. Lesufi should spend his energy in coming up with solutions that are easier and more cost effective, rather than

Traditionally, coal mines use fixed underground telephones, which frequently require a long walk or drive to reach. This means employees often need to return to the surface to get a message to a colleague, report a problem or access critical information. With the new Wi-Fi and smartphones, miners can communicate instantly via voice calls or text messaging to and from the surface, and from one underground section to another. Apart from resolving communication challenges, the Wi-Fi network also tracks key equipment through communication tags and allows for people to be located in the event of an emergency. “Up to 750 people work in an area of around 20 square kilometres, so it's important that we know where each of them are if an underground emergency occurs. “Should an evacuation occur, we are able to determine from the control room whether anyone has been left behind, exactly who they are and their last known location,” said Simfukwe. Installing Wi-Fi underground is significantly more difficult than above ground. There are no cellphone towers underground, and signals are weakened and distorted by uneven surfaces, earthen walls and other obstacles in tunnels of different sizes. However, the benefits will rapidly repay the initial R10m investment, says Anglo American.

spending it on fighting and destroying systems that work. As I say, he is also disadvantaging mostly young black learners. He should channel his energy into creating specific language schools in all feeder areas for especially primary schools. Yes, it will segregate schools along ethnic lines, but that can be dealt with by teaching and exposing those kids to for instance English, especially lets say from Grade 3 onwards, or allow at least a transition phase to an international language such as English. The child should be allowed time to adapt to a school environment. At least it will relieve the stress for those kids in the formative years. As they then gradually progress to secondary schools, a more diverse approach can be phased in. Gradually. By the time those young people reach tertiary level, they will be comfortable in more than one language and will not have any problems adjusting. So wake up and solve the problem right there. It will not perpetuate Apartheid, but will make life much easier for children and teachers alike. Integration and multi language skills will develop naturally as the child grows up.

THE Automobile Association has confirmed there will be some changes to fuel prices at the end of this month. Petrol will undergo a slight decrease, according to data released by the Central Energy Fund. As a result, the price of petrol will drop by seven cents a litre, while diesel will increase by 12 cents. These changes aren’t as compared to last month’s increase of 56 cents for petrol and diesel’s five cent decrease. "The Rand has slipped marginally by thirteen cents against the US dollar since

the Department of Energy's surprise early announcement of the May fuel price on Sunday, April 28," the report adds. The AA also announced a forthcoming Carbon Tax levy set to commence on the 5th of June and will add nine cents a litre to petrol and 10 cents to the cost of diesel. "Our hope is that the new government will immediately set out its policy agenda which has a direct impact on fuel prices," the AA concludes. carmag.co.za

BMW’s Porsche Turbo killer This is the new Toyota Quantum BMW has whipped the covers off its new special-edition M5 Edition 35 Years, conceived to celebrate (you guessed it) 35 years of Munich’s highperformance sedan. Just 350 units will be built, each wearing the “M5 Edition 35 Jahre” moniker. Interestingly, the German firm has handed the M5 Edition 35 Years model the full-fat version of its twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 engine, effectively basing the special model on the M5 Competition and thus lending it peak outputs of 460 kW and 750 N.m. As with the Competition-badged model, BMW says the newcomer will hit 100 km/h from standstill in 3,3 seconds, before passing the 200 km/h mark at 10,8 seconds. In addition, the all-wheel-drive super-sedan gains various fresh design and

BACK in February 2019, the new Toyota Quantum was revealed. Now we have pricing for this latest model (also known as the HiAce overseas) ahead of its launch in South Africa. The nine-strong range starts at R473 900 and runs through to R613 500. As we’ve already reported, the new Quantum gains added safety features, a fresh engine, improved comfort and better specification (plus a change from the "cab-over" configuration to a "semi-bonnet" design). While the Ses'Fikilie minibus model (based on the outgoing Quantum but set to be renamed HiAce locally) will continue to be produced at Toyota's Prospecton plant in KwaZuluNatal for the foreseeable future, Toyota SA says these new Quantum variants are being imported. Locally, the sixth-generation Quantum will be available as a three-seat van in long- and super-long wheelbase configurations, as well as a six-seat crew cab in long-wheelbase form. The bus range, meanwhile, will comprise 11-seater (longwheelbase) and 14-seater (super-long-wheelbase) versions. In South Africa, the new Quantum range will be offered with a solitary engine option: the 2,8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel unit also doing duty in the Hilux bakkie and Fortuner SUV. In the Quantum, this engine will be offered exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, with outputs of 130 kW (or 115 kW in the case of the 14-seater) and 420 N.m. A range of accessories (from a stainless steel nudge bar to a tow bar with rear step kit) will be offered locally. Panel van and crew cab models will be offered in Ivory White and Quicksilver Metallic, while the two bus derivatives furthermore gain the option of Light Blue Metallic. A nine-service/90 000 km service plan with intervals set at 12 months or 10 000 km ships standard, along with Toyota’s three-year/100 000 km warranty. carmag.co.za

equipment features, led by a BMW Individual special exterior finish by the name of Frozen Dark Grey metallic (described as a “special pigmentation to create a silk matte surface impression"). The 20-inch M light alloy wheels in a Y-spoke design and finished in Graphite Grey were created exclusively for this model, while the callipers of the standard M compound braking system have finished in high-gloss black. In addition, the M carbon ceramic brake system is optionally available with callipers finished in a gold hue. Inside, BMW has fitted M multifunction seats and BMW Individual Merino full leather upholstery in black with beige contrast seams, along with t r i m i n a shimmering new “aluminium carbon structure gold anodised” finish. degraaflydenburg@webmail.co.za Door-sill finishers bearing the inscription “M5 Edition 35 Jahre” and a lasing engraving with the inscription “M5 Edition 35 Jahre 1/350” on the cupholder cover in the centre console are also included. carmag.co.za
