The centennial of Lincoln’s luxury automobiles; the kickoff for the celebration of the 100th running of the 24 Hours of LeMans; the great Swiss carrossier, Hermann Graber; Talbot-Lago Grand Sports; the Alfa Romero 8C 2300; and 1932 Ford Historic Hot Rods: Celebrate these automotive excellences and others at the 71st Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, August 21, on the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Celebrating its 71st anniversary, the world’s premier celebration of the automobile and the flagship event of Pebble Beach Automotive Week, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is a contest of elegance, not speed, explains Kandace Hawkinson, marketing director for the event. “Vehicles at Pebble Beach are judged and awarded for style and technical merit, history, originality and the accuracy of their preservation or restoration,” she explains.
The week includes the 1,500-mile Pebble Beach Motoring Classic, August 8 through the 17, from Kirkland, Washington, to Pebble Beach. And, the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex, is a scenic drive for 150 Concours participants on Highway One from the 17-Mile Drive to Big Sur and back, Thursday, August 18, starting at 7 a.m. and concluding at noon.
In addition, the 17th Pebble Beach RetroAuto and the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum presented by AIG & Aliant Private Client will be held in Concours Village at Pebble Beach, August 18–20, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. RetroAuto hosts a highly curated selection of auto parts, collectibles, automotive posters, art and literature and automobilia as well as the latest luxury goods and technological tools. The Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum presented by AIG & Alliant Private Client invites car designers, racing greats and automotive-industry figures to discuss trends and other topics as well as the challenges and joys of car collecting.
And, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Pebble Beach Auctions presented by Gooding & Company, takes place August 19 and 20 in Parc du Concours.
For Sunday, the day of the Concours, judging begins at 8:30 a.m., the field officially opens at 10:30 a.m. and the awards are presented 1:30–5 p.m. Approximately 200 classic automobiles will be judged in 29 classes, in which award-winners will be chosen, culminating with Best of Show. Last year’s overall winner was a 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Autobahn Kurier shown by The Keller Collection.
The honored marques and models include Lincoln; the Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport chassis; the Alfa Romeo 8C 2300, considered by many collectors to be the ultimate classic touring car; and the 1932 Ford roadster — the chosen car for hot-rodders. A celebration of The 24 Hours of Le Mans, which first took place in May of 1923, and carrosserie Graber, active from 1925 to 1970, will also be honored.
