The 50th Anniversary of the BMW M Division, All Things MINI Cooper and 70 Years of Jaguar and their Wins at Le Mans will be celebrated at the 19th-annual The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, Friday, August 19, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club, Carmel, California.
More than 200 classic automobiles and motorcycles from the world’s pre-eminent sports and racing brands will be displayed. The event will be held concurrently with the 25th Bonhams Monterey Auction, August 19, on the western grounds of the lodge. The preview days for the auction are August 17 and 18.
Sponsored by the world’s leading luxury vendors, the event is not limited to classic automobiles. Five international culinary, fine wine and specialty cocktail pavilions, for example, will be available to ticket holders.
Vehicles will be judged in seven classes: Pre-War Sports and Racing Cars; Post-War Sports Cars 1945-1960; PostWar Sports Cars 1961-1975; Post-War Racing Cars; The Evolution of the Supercar; The Great Ferraris; Custom Coachwork; and Sports and Racing Motorcycles. Class winners are chosen by entrants in that class, and Best of Show is selected by all entrants participating in the event. Last year’s Rolex Best of Show was a stellar 1938 MercedesBenz 540K Special Roadster owned by K. Heinz Keller.
Other awards include the Spirit of The Quail for the car best representing the essence of great motoring; the Hagerty Drivers Foundation Award in partnership with FIVA for the Most Well-Preserved Vehicle at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering; the Octane Editor’s Choice Award – The Editor’s Choice to the automobile that person “Would most like to drive”; and category awards for judged vehicles.
The annual Fireside Chat Series, featuring motorcar enthusiasts such as racecar drivers, designers, collectors and restoration experts, will continue again this year during the event. Previous guests have been Sir Jackie Stewart, Michael Schumacher and Mark Webber.
The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering supports charities, including Rancho Cielo, a learning and social services center for underserved youth in Monterey County, and the Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Foundation.
“Over its 18 years of celebrations, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering has become one of the most esteemed automotive events in the world with a truly one-of-a-kind atmosphere,” says Kai Lermen, general manager of Quail Lodge & Golf Club. “The Peninsula Signature Events team is thrilled to welcome back collectors and enthusiasts from all over the world to experience one of the most impressive lineups to date.” These events are organized by The Peninsula Hotels, including The Quail.
Because of the high demand, tickets are allocated by a computer-generated lottery system in February. For more information about The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, call 831.620.8879 and see signature events.peninsula.com.
