MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN TURPIN is a professor of interior design and Dean of the School of Arts and Design. He teaches the history of architecture and interiors and is actively involved in research. His research addresses the intersection of social values and material culture as it relates to the design of the built environment in late 19th and 20th century America. He is past editor-in-chief of the Journal of Interior Design, the premiere scholarly publication for the discipline. In 2011, he was named one of the top design educators by DesignIntelligence magazine. He was also appointed to an advisory board of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to provide guidance on the interior design curriculum for public schools. He is Fellow of the Interior Design Educators Council and currently working on a six volume project entitled the Cultural History of Interiors.

HPU is the only private college in North Carolina and one of only a handful elsewhere to offer students the opportunity to study in visual arts programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Thank you for considering High Point University. Housing all the visual and performing arts, the David R. Hayworth School of Arts and Design welcomes those who wish to foster their creativity into meaningful careers in the creative arts industries. We offer programs in studio art, graphic design, fashion merchandising, interior design, music, theater and dance. Whether you want to be the maker or the performer or anything in between, our community of dedicated faculty and staff mentors are here to support your journey. Students who major in the arts and design reap the benefits of a process that is steeped in experimentation and defined by a constant loop of reflection, action and assessment making our graduates nimble and adaptable. They can see conceptual connections in multifaceted complex problems that others do not. They are adept at receiving feedback, discerning its value and applying it as appropriate. It is no surprise that an arts degree naturally develops graduates that are highly sought after. All these traits have served our students well as they garnered internships and professional careers at companies like Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Cirque du Soleil, Kate Spade, Calvin Klein, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, LaForce + Stevens, Zimmerman Advertising, Anthropologie, Marriott International, Lillian August, Bluman Group, Gensler, IA, Stroh Creative and Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. Many are working professionally as actors, theatre technicians, performers and designers in motion picture, television, radio and national touring companies. I know you have a choice on where you seek educational opportunities, so I thank you for your interest in our arts and design programs. Consider visiting our beautiful campus and meeting with your admissions counselor or with a member of our friendly faculty to see for yourself how we prepare students with life skills in addition to professional artistic knowledge.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AT ITS BEST The arts have been the model for experiential learning for centuries. The act of performing and creating is the foundation of our disciplines. At HPU, this happens in the classroom and beyond. For example, as part of a global experience course, music students traveled across Italy, performing at some of the country’s most renowned cathedrals and basilicas, including St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, while theater students engage in workshops at the Globe Theater in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. Interior design and fashion merchandising students have the opportunity to study in Florence for a full semester to complete certificates tailored specifically for High Point University, and our photography students can travel to Paris to walk in the footsteps of Eugene Atget, a pioneer in documentary photography. Meanwhile, our graphic design students have had the honor of meeting with Milton Glaser and Paula Scher of Pentagram during their travels to New York City.
