Safety and diligence are two of the topics we emphasize and discuss at length every week. Safety means not only our personal safety, and taking the time to be alert and disciplined as we perform our †ƒ‹Ž› –ƒ•Â?•ǥ „—– ƒŽ•‘ ‡š–‡Â?†• –‘ ›‘—” –‘™ ƒÂ?† ƒŽ•‘ ›‘—” ’”‘Ď?‹…‹‡Â?…› ‹Â? At our Wheelhouse Seminars in March, we discussed making a continual improvement of our SIRE inspections a primary focus for 2015 and you have responded accordingly. The SIRE report is the ’”‹Â? ƒ”› –‘‘Ž ‘—” …—•–‘Â? ‡”• —•‡ –‘ ‰”ƒ†‡ ‘—” Ď?Ž‡‡– ƒÂ?† …”‡ƒ–‡ ƒÂ? ‹Â? ƒ‰‡ ‘ˆ ‘—” ‘’‡”ƒ–‹‘Â?Ǥ ‡‡’ ‹Â? This comes at a time that we and others are experiencing decreased demand for our services. There are numerous factors driving the lower demand, and during this period we will be seeking new business opportunities. The difference between our clients choosing Higman over other providers is largely dependent on your daily performance. We are professionals and should keep that in mind every watch.

"Now, you may wonder how you could ever have a relaxed life if you strive to maintain all these habits. But, that's the beauty of it. If you enjoy what you do and form good habits, it all becomes second nature. Maintain these habits, and encourage your team members to do the same...mistakes of yesterday have forged me into a better leader and team member today. If you want to be part of an elite team and are going to shed old habits, make sure to keep these!® That quote is from Brent Gleeson, Navy SEAL Combat Veteran.

Back in 1962, Captain Walter Evans was only sixteen and already a member of the US Navy. He turned seventeen while in boot camp and then was quickly assigned to the USS CORAL SEA, stationed in San Francisco. Walter made his first voyage on the ship to Australia. The trip was designated to commemorate the famous WWII Battle of the Coral Sea. Most of his Navy career was spent during the early years of the Vietnam War being deployed from Subic Bay. Walter left the Navy after 4 years, 6 months, 22 days and 8 hours. From there Walter became a heavy equipment operator in the oil fields. When work in the oil patch dried up in 1990, Walter’s twin brother, a relief captain at Rio Marine, told him to pack his clothes and be ready at 0400 to start his new towboat career. Captain Walter filled out an application the next morning and continued working at Rio for the next 5 years. During that time he prepared for becoming a wheelman. Once he had the sea time needed for an OUTV license, a combination of Navy time and Rio Marine time, Walter took the required USCG course and passed the test. Walter started his wheelhouse career at Brown Water Marine but quickly went on to Bacon Towing Company. After ninety days employed there, he was given his first Captain’s assignment on the M/ V JAVELINA. Captain Walter joined Higman in 1992 as pilot of the M/V JOANNE M POWELL. He was quickly promoted to relief captain the next year aboard the M/V MISS MARIANNE. Walter’s first captain assignment was in 2006 aboard the M/V MARRERO. In 2013 Captain Walter used his years of experience to become a full time wheelman evaluator for the company. Over the years Walter has observed a steady improvement in towboat technology and living conditions. Today there is much more accountability and training required to be a wheelman in the inland waterways. Looking ahead, Walter has plenty of projects at home that will keep him busy for years to come. Thank you Walter for the years spent at Higman! 2015
