Mountainside Design + Build - Summer 2013 In the summer of 2013 I spent two months working on a renovation for Mountainside Design + Build. The clients were looking for a new signature look for the front entry of their newly renovate home. Our construction team had already placed a floating steel structure staircase a n d w h i t e o a k h a d b e e n d e c i d e d o n a s t h e c l a d d i n g m a t e r i a l . Wo r k i n g w i t h o u r c o m p a n y ’ s m o s t e x p e r i e n c e d f i n i s h i n g c a r p e n t e r, I h a d t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o d e s i g n a n d b u i l d t h i s s t a i r c a s e . The overall design that the clients agreed to was one that emphasized the paneling nature of the oak cladding through a grid of reveal lines that unified the front entrance of the house. This overall design concept was followed throughout a very challenging construction process and resulted in a one of a kind product with which the client was very satisfied.

Winner of the Habitation ‘67 award in the Murdoch Laing Competition

Inspired by artwork of Louis Belzile, this house offers accomodation to an artist who works in mixed media. The title of the project refers both to the house’s ability to offer working environments to various visual art media and to its role as a medium that shapes light and atmosphere to match the function of the occupant and the changing nature around it. The house is arranged as a linear organization of the program. One part of the house leads to the next in a manner that is representative of the routine of the painter that lives in it. As the painter follows his routine the house exposes him to natural light and environments in such a way as to draw attention to that particular time and season. These effects are strengthened by the creation of a roof garden and a long yard that serve as buffers between the city and the residence, providing a filter for the light and sound that reach the house.

ARCH 303 Design and Construction - Fall 2013 Pavilion 5 of Musee des Beaux Arts uses the character of a vertical museum to form the basis of a narrative that the curators will shape through the individual galleries. The ‘in between’, as expressed by a t r a n s p a r e n t o p e n f l o o r, c l i m b s a n d i n f i l t r a t e s t h e g a l l e r i e s , p r o v i d i n g an atmospheric and narrative connection. The galleries are open and flexible to multiple arrangements and contain a feature wall that can give a direction to that galleries narrative. As the visitor rises through the museum, the feature wall becomes more prominent ultimately becoming an atrium that is open to a social space on the fourth floor and is useable as a display for large suspended sculptures or naturally lite exhibitions. The main circulation element serves to punctuate the narrative by bringing the visitor out of the concentrated opacity of each gallery into a brightly light outward looking staircase on the Bishop Street façade. The staircase brings the visitor to an open in between floor that provides a space for social conversation or informal lectures or screenings. The in between floor provides a social outlet for the art in a space where ideas and interpretations can be shared, discussed and informed. At the same time it represents a feature space for the museum where openings and special events could be held. The end of the narrative is found at the top of the museum where the visitor ascends into the largest gallery where the open floor plan allows for a dramatic display of the art work.

The first stage of the project was an exploration of light and its relationship to space and movement. This model explored methods of manipulating natural light to create distinct atmospheres in interior spaces.
